• Newly configured MSSQL2008, TIME_WAIT but no ESTABLISHED?

  Windows 2008 R2, standard. No firewall locally on it. Newly setup because an old SQL2000 had two disks die (or could it be the raid controller?) at the same time. Luckily, I had fresh backups. The databases have been restored, and SP2 for SQL2008 applied. I can see various hosts trying to establish a session, but the (customer) sites does not work and I don't see the expected established sessions. A wireshark reveals a full three-way handshake. Since it's customer machines connecting, I cannot logon to them and restart application pools.. What on earth could be causing this? • DNS Server (2008 r2) MMC The server DC01 could not be contacted. The error was: Access was denied

  I've just migrated the AD with the whole nine yards, FSMO, PDC, RID, Schema, etc, from an SBS 2003 to a Win 2008 R2 Std. I have managed to have no error in the dcdiag before I demoted the SBS 2003 from the AD, fsmocheck, conectivity, advertising, dns, etc. The SBS 2003 demoted successfully. After this step I have restarted both, the old SBS and the new Win 2008 r2. After restart the new DC (which is the GC) started with an Access denied to the DNS Server MMC, actually it is looking like I would try to connect to the 2008 r2 DNS server from an older server console I can NOT manage DNS server through MMC nor through dnscmd (Command failed: ERROR_ACCESS_DENIED 5 0x5) I cannot even use the Action Option from the DNS Server MMC because all the options are DISABLED but for "Launch nslookup". I've made a lot of research on the internet but no luck, yet. So I come to ask for help. Thank you very much.

• Windows 8 - Synaptics driver - Mouse keeps freezing

  I have Win-8 Pro installed on my Dell XPS. This has Synaptic PS/2 Port TouchPad. As I upgraded the Laptop from Win7 to Win8 all my factory Mouse software (along with other preinstalled software) was all deleted. So for the mouse, I installed Windows 8/7/XP/Vista 64/32-bit Edition v16.3.15.1. Problem - every few seconds (or minutes at times), the mouse freezes. Windows is still working, it's just the mouse. I have to wait 5-15 seconds before the mouse works again. I thought this was because the Synaptic Driver I am installing is not Win-8 compatible but this is not the case. It seems the mouse freezes when Windows is working, loading or opening new programs/windows. I have the same problem in my other Laptop which has upgraded Win8 pro. This is a Dell Studio. What's causing this?

• Creating Windows partition in Boot Camp without an install disc

  I have an old Macbook1,1 which has Snow Leopard on it. I'd like to get Win 7 on it by using Boot Camp Assistant, however my superdrive is not working (It just spits out any disc I put in within 10 seconds). I know how to get Win 7 installed by using USB drive, but I still need Boot Camp to create the Windows partition for me. I've made an ISO file of the install disc which I've mounted, but Boot Camp won't pick it up. It seems to only look in the superdrive. How can I get Boot Camp to skip requirement of an install disc? edit: nevermind, as it turns out the partition was already created by the time it asked for the disc!

• RGB to DVI adapter not working for Projector-to-PC

  We have a wall-mounted projector (dell 4320) with VGA In and the other end of the cable is RGB. We have an RGB to DVI-I adapter (w/ DIP switches) inorder to plug the cable into a PC (video card has 1 VGA and 1 DVI-I port). We had no problems until recently, when the PCs hard drive crashed. After re-imaging the PC, the computer no longer "sees" the projector (the computer doesn't detect the projector as a second monitor anymore). The PC is an older Dell with an after-market video card and runs win XP. I also tried it on a new HP box (win 7), but had to add a DVI-I to DVI-D adapter. Any ideas?

  Hi everyone, I have a linksys wrt54g router and a windows 7 box at home I'd like to be able to remote desktop into from work. Would it be possible for someone to point me in the right direction on what I need to configure to get this working, both on the router and on the win 7 box? I'm sure there are a lot of little steps involved. Ideally I'd like to set it up so that only my work IP address can get through to the win 7 machine. Thanks very much for any pointers and links!

• Windows 7 - Home Drive Map Fails

  Server 2003 SP2 (not R2) with 2 new Win 7 Pro workstations. Home Drive is set in AD (not GP) to map to \\server\users\username. Home Drive map fails, other network drives map correctly. No error logged on server or PC, Win 7 shows "Could not reconnect all network drives." There is no Y: (Home Drive) listed, either in the GUI or via Net Use. Manual map via batch file in startup group with the same path works correctly? Home Drive map works correctly on XP workstations.

• SATA controller installed but not working? (No drives show up/Don't see card's BIOS)

  Hi, I have an old Promise FastTrak S150 TX4 SATA controller card. I put it in an old machine running Windows Server 2003. I booted the machine. The new hardware was detected. I installed the drivers. So now in Device Manager under "SCSI and RAID Controllers" I see "Win Server 2003 Promise FastTrak S150 TX4 Controller" and "Win Server 2003 Promise RAID Console SCSI Processor Device" I previously had the card in a machine that is now dead. When I booted that machine, during the boot process I would see the card info displayed and the drives that were attached. Boot would finish and my drives would be available. When I boot this new machine I never see that screen/text. No hard drives are available/visible. What am I missing? Thanks.

• How to have 2 windows machines on the same network with the same IP address

  I have a custom made ADC device that is spitting out data by addressed UDP packets. I have that device plugged into a 4 port switch. I have one windows embedded standard 7 machine which is the normal recipient of that data. To be able to receive the data (Using LabVIEW) the windows network adapter IPv4 settings must have a static IP address that corresponds to the UDP packet destination. I would like to add a second windows machine (This one is just regular Win 7 Pro) to simultaneously catch the data, however with all devices connected to the switch, the Win 7 Pro machine recognizes an IP address conflict and will not take the setting for the required static IP address. (The network adaptor settings show that the correct value has been entered but ipconfig shows that it is not actually set.) Neither windows machine needs to transmit network data, they only need to be able to receive the UDP data from the ADC device. Is there any way to disable this IP address conflict detection 'feature' of windows networking?

  I'm trying to find youtube video (just watched) in Firefox cache folder, but I cant find the folder. win xp sp3 Firefox 16.1 I tried C:\Documents and Settings\eDIN\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xp44aixq.default\Cache Also C:\Documents and Settings\eDIN\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\49mvq84u.default\Cache In this folder I found the png thumbnail of visited youtube page C:\Documents and Settings\eDIN\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\49mvq84u.default\thumbnails But, there is no video file. I also searched all files and folders arround (Default user, All users...etc). There is only one win user.

  We have a very interesting problem. The network is configured in this way: internet is connected to Trendnet switch TS DHCP server at 192.168.0.1 running on Ubuntu (S) is connected to internet switch DNS is also configured on 192.168.0.1 on S D-Link Wi-Fi boosters are connected to switch TS PCs use D-Link PCI-E Wi-Fi cards to get access to network PCs have both Ubuntu and Windows 7 There are about 40 PCs. When PC is booted to Ubuntu it easily gets access to internet. But when it's booted to Windows 7, it gets a valid IP-address, but doesn't get access to internet. The address, mask, DNS, GW-address are totally the same as when it's booted under Ubuntu. The S is reacheble and pingable. Sometimes when we are lucky the PC gets access to Internet, but after rebooting it can lose it. When PC under Windows has access, it has totally the same settings as when it doesn't. What can be done? UPDATE I shared a dropbox with 2 captures of traffic. Ping.pcap is a capture of pinging 8.8.8.8. And google-browser.pcap is a capture of opening a google.com in a browser, both of them are in tcpdump formats and made by Wireshark on Win PC. The MAC of Win PC ends on b7:63 and IP is 192.168.0.130. The problem is that the application works fine on Windows 7 and when run on Win XP, it swaps the partitions but doesn't run the flash applications but just keeps running in the background. I can see it in task manager. But, when I copy the application to desktop and run, it runs with no glitch. I was facing the same problem on Win 7 too, but it was running as required when I ran it using "Run in XP mode" and then I applied a SHIM and is running since then as required. The application is built using VC++ 2008. What might be the problem?

• Getting BootMgr not found errors repeatedly on Win7 x64

  So here is the basic configuration of the box: Primary RAID 1 (Mirror, Bootable): 2x 300GB WD SATA drives AMD Phenom Quad Core x64 @2.2 ASUS M3N78 Pro Board 4GB RAM Win 7 Ultimate Additionally, this box is a Host OS for several CentOS Boxes via VirtualBox. The box runs like a champ but, for whatever reason, everytime I restart the machine I get a BootMgr not found error when the box tries to boot. I pop in my Win DVD, select 'Repair Windows' then 'Fix Start Up Problems' and everything works fine...once. When I restart the box again I have to go back through this process. Any ideas on what is going on?

• Force Windows 8 to search indexed files

  When using search files in Windows 8 (win+f) I don't get expected results. For example, I installed VLC, it's in Program Files (86) folder, and that folder is selected for indexing. Search for files (win+f) gives 0 results. If I pin to start that exe, then it's found - but I don't want to do this, that's not the point. Where does it search for files? Is there any way to specify search locations? It doesn't use Indexing Options settings, at least it seams so. Also, searching from explorer window is kinda slow - I tried entering VLC.EXE in search box (when in c:\ root), and it takes some time to give correct results. It works, but it looks like it doesn't use indexing, rather scan all files/folders, which is slow.

• Dell Windows 7 DVD includes IE9, where to find IE8?

  It appears as though we can now only get a 64 bit installation of windows 7 to come with IE9, and I cannot find an installer for IE 8 for it. This presents a problem, as I am building a new machine for a developer, but the company does not support IE9 yet, and all development needs to be able to be run on IE8. I would rather have them on a 64 bit version of windows so they can have more than 4GB of RAM (can get IE8 on 32 bit win 7). Does anyone know how to get IE 8 on a new 64 bit version of win 7?

  SITUATION: A larger company acquires a smaller one. IT infrastructure has to be merged. There are no immediate plans to change the current size or role of the smaller company - the offices and production remain. It has a Win 2003 SBS domain server, Win 2000 file server, linux server for SVN and internal Wikipedia, 2 or 3 production machines, LTO backup solution. The servers are approx. 5 years old. Cisco network equippment (switches, wireless, ASA). Mail solution is a hosted Exchange. There are approx. 35 desktops and laptops in the company. IT infrastructure unification: There are 2 IT merging proposals. 1.) Replacing old servers, installing Win Server 2008 domain controller, and setting up either subdomain or domain trust to a larger company. File server and other servers remain local and synchronization should be set up to a centralized location in larger company. Similary with the backup - it remains local and if needed it should be replicated to a centralized location. Licensing is managed by smaller company. 2.) All servers are moved to a centralized location in larger company. As many desktop machines as possible are replaced by thin clients. The actual machines are virtualized and hosted by Terminal server at the same central location. Citrix solutions will be used. Only router and site-2-site VPN connection remain at the smaller company. Backup internet line to insure near 100% availability is needed. Licensing is mainly managed by larger company. Only specialized software for PCs that will not be virtualized is managed by smaller company. I'd like to ask you to discuss both solutions a bit. In your opinion, which is better from the operational point of view? Which is more reliable, cheaper in the long run? Easier to manage from the system administrator's point of view? Easier on the budget and easier to maintain from IT department's point of view? Does anybody have any experience with the second option and how does it perform in production environment? Pros and cons of both? Your input will be of great significance to me. Thank you very much!

• HP Wireless Printer not working

  I have installed an HP DeskJet 4620 driver on a win 7 machine. All works perfectly for several days, and than printing is not longer possible. Instead I get the message: "Unable to communicate with printer". This happened on every Win 7 PC I tried, and none of the HP/MS sites contain any relevant info... (Posting this so that the answer appears online, as I did solve it after much work) Solution: It appears that HP installation puts a unique "port" called "HP Network re-discovery". It stops working after some time (possibly after the first time the printer/pc enter sleep mode). BUT, the standard MS TCP port works just fine. So: Go to "Printers" Right click Printer Click "Printer properties" and then "Printer" or "Fax" (for both - do all this twice) Click "Add Port..." Select "Standard TCP Port" Fill in details Move printer to use the new port by un-checking the old one and checking the new one Happy printing.

  Situation I am running a RHEL server via a VM on my laptop. I have a win7 desktop sharing out a folder and the VM on my laptop running RHEL6 has a CIFS windows mount at \mnt\win When I go to unmount the device I get a device is busy message. So I went to my laptop and check to see if there were any users connected to the share, since it listed none I turned off sharing. I went back to my RHEL instance and attempted another umount \mnt\win but received the same error. Question What are other alternatives to unmounting a shared drive?

• Question regarding IPv6 - Solicited-Node Address with a Link local scope

  Situation: A small LAN comprising a Windows 7 Ultimate x54 PC, 2 XP Pro x86 PCs and an Asus router.The Win 7 box has IPv6 enabled. There are no other IPv6 enabled devices on the LAN. In my firewall I see numerous requests originating from the Win 7 PC, which are for the Multicast address ff02::1:ff.... which is a Solicited-Node address query and has a scope of 2 which equates to the local link. As far as I knew local link addresses are filtered by routers, hence local link. Given that situation I'm wondering why I'm seeing these queries being generated to various addresses? Any ideas? • Sudden complaint that Windows is not genuine - some questions

  Hi, I used to use VMWare Workstation and made several VMs with Win Server 2008, which worked fine. My first tasks were to setup RDP, updates, and activate the OS. I deleted Workstation and thus did not have my VMs available to use for about 2 months. Now I have VMWare Server 2.0.2 as I this is free and I am going to get Hyper-V on a host Win Server in about March, but when I have accessed one of my VMs (haven't tried the others yet), it complains that the copy of Windows is not genuine. I now have a black screen but can access all my apps on the VM. Will the OS eventually shut me out from accessing it? I got my key from the Action Pack but the standard R2 key has been taken down and replaced with the Enteprise R2 key. I have Enterprise R2 but apparently the autorun is corrupt! Thanks

• I keep getting blue screen - Windows 7 x64 (maybe ram?)

  I have +- 5yrs old pc runnig windows 7 and I've been getting blue screen recently. I had win 8 and I got a lof of erros with ram memory, so I reinstalled back to Win 7. (I have 2x 2 GB RAM) To make a better image of my errors - I get them while writing email, installing nvidia driver, sound driver, running RAM test. I got a log of my last error, could anyone tell me what is it? Should I get new RAM memories? • Access to local network machine

  I have granted new setting from my domain provider. Domain with specific port is pointing on computer in local network (fixed ip) like: mydomain.com:87 -> 192.168.1.1 Local machine is running on win server 2008. Everything works fine on local network. But mydomain.com:87 is not working. Are there extra settings for win server to allow connection from outside? (Firewall is turned off while searching for working result.)
