• Bandwidth heavy site... use co-location?

  I'm working on a web site that is likely to be very bandwidth-heavy. A major feature of the site when in active use can pull up to 1Mbps for a single session. Luckily, once users get over the new toy factor, the use of this feature will probably be 1-5% or less (probably much less) of session time. However, new users are likely to play with this feature a good bit, especially at launch. I'm very concerned about bandwidth use. This is more or less a niche market, so I won't ever be needing to scale to crazy levels like YouTube. However, it is entirely possible for it to be a couple terabytes/month. Is co-location my best option? What cheap bandwidth services (colocation/hosted/cloud/whatever) are out there?

  Yep, looks like iOS5 introduces a centralized messaging system: the Notification Center. Wonder where they got that idea from? Seriously, way to go though; this matches and probably betters what I really like about Android’s notifications system. I’ll have to check it out myself, though. Application UX's own research confirmed the centralized approach as something users wanted in research last year. This feature will really help the iOS in the enterprise user market too. Up to now, iOS is pretty dismal in the notifications space IMO.

  When deciding upon how to design a software project with my colleagues, most suggestions tend to be for using specific frameworks "because it's popular in the job market" or "that's the framework that gets recruiters on the phone," and never what I'm looking for which is, "because it's a good fit for the project as it makes the system more adaptive to future changes and makes life easier for developers." I didn't start looking at projects in this way until I started reading up on domain-driven design. I've found that the actual domain is hidden deep under the frameworks used and it's hard to learn the business processes that have been implemented by the software product. Is there a way to marry the two competing goals: getting exposure as a development team while still being able to avoid complexity? Are frameworks that compromise, or are there other solutions out there?

Our website servers are located in one place. We can't distribute our site to different locations.   I was recently assigned reading from the Tannenbaum-Torvalds debates in my OS class. In the debates, Tannenbaum makes some predictions: Microkernels are the future x86 will die out and RISC architectures will dominate the market (5 years from then) everyone will be running a free GNU OS I was a 1 year old when the debates happened, so I lack historical intuition. Why have these predictions not panned out? It seems to me, that from Tannenbaum's perspective, they're pretty reasonable predictions of the future. What happened so that they didn't come to pass?
