  • How far can you get in iOS without learning PhotoShop or another graphic design program? [on hold]

    I'm in the process of learning iOS, and I'm coming from a web dev background where CSS controls 70-90% of the UI, and Python/C++ desktop dev where there are highly customizable UI toolkits for most things. I'm trying to figure out how people make good-looking apps without graphic design skills. You always hear about some 8 year old or 14 year old who made a successful app. So I assume that even if the required code was relatively basic, the app must have looked good if it was a success. But I find it really unlikely that these kids have advanced PhotoShop skills as well as having learned iOS programming at such a young age. Frankly, the same goes for most independent app developers....as they say, unicorns don't exist. So what's the deal? Can you make a good-looking, market quality app without those skills? What are the limitations?

    Recently i started to optimize my company's website. With a little help of market samurai. One of the adjustments was a www redirect to the prefered domain. We currently rank on #8 for our desired keyword with the domain without the www. If I add a custom url (our domain with www), we see a difference in stats BLP (backlinks to the page) {it's the website on top} Can anyone tell me how i could merge this so we might even rank better for our keyword? What I did so far: 3 weeks ago set the www.duo.be as prefered domain in GWT and put a 301 redirect in place so the duo.be gets redirected to www.duo.be Both domains are in GWT and both with www.duo.be as preferred domain.     I was recently assigned reading from the Tanenbaum-Torvalds debates in my OS class. In the debates, Tanenbaum makes some predictions: Microkernels are the future x86 will die out and RISC architectures will dominate the market (5 years from then) everyone will be running a free GNU OS I was a one year old when the debates happened, so I lack historical intuition. Why have these predictions not panned out? It seems to me, that from Tanenbaum's perspective, they're pretty reasonable predictions of the future. What happened so that they didn't come to pass?

    I just learnt a crash course from an institute for Core and Advanced Core Concepts in Java. I asked them what are all the algorithms, I need to know? They said: In Java there are more methods, you don't need to code more as in C/C++. After finishing core concepts in Java, I just passed on with more method usages from pre-defined classes in packages. So what's the next part I have to do, if the above mentioned is perfectly true (or) false based on the current expectations of IT Java programmers market?   • How to give life to my idea which belong to my company?

    I wonder, what options do I have in the following situation. In the course of the several projects I realised the need in some auxilary software product (related to testing of the main products). I applied a creative approach to the matter and implemented a system which I think has a potential and looking promising (maybe not on the market but at least among some interested supporters). I have even more ideas related to this system and continue developing at my free and work time. It has become a work and hobby at the same time. Unfortunately, this work basically has nothing in common with the company's business and there is no way this will be organized in a form of standard development process and be presented to costumers as a product. What can you suggest in this situation? How to avoid breaching of contract? Have you had something similar in your career? What if my intention is to develop it as an open source project?
