• Unable to mount iso as dvd drive in VMware Fusion 6

  I have a newer iMac without an optical drive and some DVDs that I needed to run software off of. This software will have you juggle discs to read data off of them, and the data can't simply be copied to the machine's drive. I used a windows machine to make ISOs of these DVDs. And the first disc, the installer, it will mount in VMware and let you install the software. It then asks for the other discs, and these won't mount as ISOs. If I mount them as drive images, they'll show up on the iMac's and I have access to all the files. But if I try to mount them as the dvd drive through Fusion, nothing happens. For that matter, I'm unable to attempt it a second time, as Fusion believes that the there is already an iso mounted as the dvd, while nothing has happened as far as the guest OS is concerned. drutil eject will allow me to eject the ghost/non-existent dvd, at which point I can make a second (equally futile) attempt. Does anyone have an explanation for this behavior? How can the ISO be valid enough to mount as a drive image, but not valid enough for Fusion to mount it as if it were a dvd?

• Putting shortcuts onto user's machines using AD

  I just handled a small task, which I would like to automate through Active Directory. We’ve written a few Intranet applications which get used a lot here. Occasionally someone will have to go to the front desk and work on something there, while one of the receptionists are away. They’ll always call us to have us put a shortcut onto their desktop linking to these Intranet applications. It’s just a bit of a nuisance, and I’m sure that AD could be used to automate creating shortcuts on user’s desktops pointing to our Intranet applications. The only thing is, I don’t know how to do this, and being a small shop that we are, we don’t have a system administrator at this time. So, how do we automate the creation of desktop shortcuts to websites, using AD in a Windows 2003 Server environment?

• How much free memory should I have on my webserver?

  I have a webserver that's currently hosting two Wordpress sites and some java-based collaboration software. The server has 2G of memory and is currently using about 1.8G of the available memory. Right now what's on here is pretty much a pilot project that's getting negligible traffic so I think it's pretty clear that I'll be needing more memory. I was wondering, if I was to release it, how I might anticipate my memory needs based on the traffic it gets. I've poked around on Google and what I've found has been a bit tenuous. Is there a good heuristic that one should use when calculating memory demands as a function of the base (no traffic) load on the server? For reference, the output of free -m can be seen below: total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 2048 1832 215 0 0 0 -/+ buffers/cache: 1832 215 Swap: 0 0 0 To me this looks like actual memory used and isn't an illusion due to caching or anything else. I figure the demands of my collaboration software will have to be experimentally tested so here's free -m without that software running: total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 2048 1109 938 0 0 0 -/+ buffers/cache: 1109 938 Swap: 0 0 0 My plan B to figure this out is to add a bunch of swap space to the server, give it some traffic and adjust according the the amount that swap gets used. I was just wondering if anyone had a good rule of thumb to estimate how much memory I should plan on in advance...or if what I'm thinking is nuts.   I deleted Linux (Ubuntu) partition from windows Ii forgot to repair mbr. The thing is I don't have my windows boot CD with me now and not CD drive. so the solution I needed is that is there any small utility software that can be easily downloaded (I knew about hiren CD but that's about 500 MB and I don't need that whole stuff) and can work through USB? Also explain steps to perform. Thank you UPDATED: Any small Linux live CD can also b taken into consideration as i can boot that on USB using pendrivelinux software

• Windows 7 Synchronize folders BUT while some files are open

  I need some way to synchronize 2 drives I have. I want to do this ofter (once a day or so) There is the main drive that I want to clone/synchronize on a backup hard disk. The problem is in that there is an open TrueCrypt file mounted as a drive, and its live. If you don't know what true crypt is, basically you create a file on a hard disk and that file is encrypted. It's constantly open and modified live. Also Its pretty large. 100GB + I will use freefilesync . There are many tools that can do that. My question is, is it safe to copy the encrypted file while its open ? Does the software freeze the file in one state and copies it ? Or will I get a corrupted file on the other drive ? It was not clear to me how windows handles that. I read something about shadow copy, and the software says that it supports this. Does anyone know something on the matter that can help me ? or some software that will work ok in my scenario ? Thanks

  I have a vmware VPS running Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise that has performance issues with MySQL. Every few minutes, MySQL stall for few seconds then responed to queries. I'm sure that my.ini need to be optimized, but unfortunately, I don't have any idea of my.ini configuration. • Windows 7 permissions and Samba domain

  I'm the main desktop support in an office of mixed MacOS and WinXp machines, about 60. I'm new to Windows 7. Currently our XP users are admins on their own machines, and my boss is wanting us to get away from that now that we're going to Windows 7 (64bit). My boss is largely absent from my day-to-day work, so I'm here looking for help =) I have numerous unattended .cmd scripts that we run from a server share, unattended software installs. Some run at login, some have to be run manually. With the NetworkAdmin account logged on to the computer, I am able to run the .cmd files and install stuff just fine. With my test account logged on (Power User), I cannot run the .cmd file - I get an Access Denied. When I change my test account to an Admin on the machine, I still get access denied. However, the test account can simply double-click the .exe and install the software just fine, as admin. Power User can't install anything. How do I fix it so that any power user or admin on the machine can run anything as long as it's on our shared software drive?

  Is it possible to setup several additional domain controllers (ADC) at remote locations that are connected via medium bandwidth DSL (2-10 Mbit) WAN connections for a single domain (intranet.example.com)? And would it be a good idea? We have five sites and would like to have extremely high availability if any of the site were to lose their Internet connection. However each site is very small, and all are over a fairly small geographical area within the same region, so it would seem strange to have a PDC for each of the sites. If it were possible to have an ADC for each site, would the clients use the ADC or just use the PDC if it's available to them?

What I'd like is a single, concise document that lists the steps involved. It could be a free online article, someone's blog, a small booklet, someone here who takes the trouble to write it out. Does such a thing exist? If so, can you provide the reference or even provide the text here. I'm running a very small, simple environment consisting of two ESXi hosts and Vsphere Standard edition. • RAID 1 in ubuntu 12.04

  Right now I have a small file server to which I have loaded ubuntu 12.04 desktop on a small 160gb harddrive. This harddrive is the primary drive from which the OS boots. I want to move all my data to my file server so it can be shared on the network (contain in 2x2TB harddrives in my desktop. The 2TB drivers are in raid 1 (hardware). I simply want to move them to the file server and set it up so that they are in software raid 1. If at all possible I'd like to be able to do this without losing any info on the drives. I've searched around and the guides i find describe raiding drives for boot driver, but these wouldn't be boot drives just regular storage drives. If someone could tell me how to perform this or point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated.

• Ubuntu synaptics touchpad is too sensitive

  I recently switched from Windows to Linux (Linux Mint specifically) on my IBM T61 laptop. Since making the switch, my touchpad has been nearly unusable. When I place one finger on the touchpad, without moving it, the cursor bobs around in a small area as if I am making a number of small movements. I think the cursor is moving around because the sensitivity is too high - just rotating the tip of my finger in place moves the cursor over about one-third of the screen. My trackpad does not suffer from the same problem. I have lowered the sensitivity in the mouse settings to its minimum and I have tried to follow the advice from http://iruel430.blogspot.com/2010/06/lowering-mouse-sensitivity-in-ubuntu.html and also reduce laptop touch pad sensitivity in ubuntu. But, in both cases, my touchpad still has the same behavior. Perhaps there is an xinput setting I am overlooking? Is there a better driver I can use for my T61?

• What is a realistic average time difference between servers in the same LAN?

  Until recently, we had at work a small cluster of about 20 small Windows servers (which have now all been virtualized). They were all configured to synchronize with the local time server. It was on an 1Gb sub-network in our own DC. I never got them to be less than about 100ms away from each other, which I consider to be an incredibly big difference. Is that a normal value? What is a realistic expectation of time difference between machines running on a 1Gb network, and all connected to the same time server, and updating frequently, say every 5 minutes? I would like to know this as setting timeouts and other parameters in a distributed application requires to take that difference into consideration.

  Old application that is used by 50-60.000 paying customers. Company is several hundred people big. Application has a lot of business critical code (30% of all code) written in classic asp. Application has a lot more .net code. Application has a COM+ bridge for enabling asp to "talk" to .net Organization lacks some/a lot knowledge on what is causing the 10-20% server-reset per day (might be due to COM+ ?) There is no red line through the application; no architecture, no real patterns etc. The application has been like this for at least 5 years. The asp code base is increasing, slowly but certainly. I have read refactoring stories and I have knowledge on why you some of the times should not re-write a system. I would love for the old asp code to vanish as well as the COM+ component. But the pain is that no one really knows what is going on inside the asp classic code and the attitude inside all the teams are "this is just how it is". Down the line, this causes a lot of other issues like recruiting, dev effeciency, business needs that cannot be met, scale etc. With these little facts, does that justify a re-write of the asp code and the removal of the COM+ component ? How would you go about it ?

Data is exchanged asynchronously between client and server, typically in JSON format.     Some times you need to prevent  User names ,E-mail ID's or other values from being duplicated by a new user during Registration or any other cases,So I will add a simple approach to make the page more user-friendly. Instead the user filled all the Registration fields then press submit after that received a message as a result of PostBack that "THIS USERNAME IS EXIST", Ajax tidies this up by allowing asynchronous querying while the user is still completing the registration form.   ASP.NET enables you to create Web services can be accessed from client script in Web pages by using AJAX technology to make Web service calls. Data is exchanged asynchronously between client and server, typically in JSON format. It passes a User_Name value obtained from a textbox as well as a callback function named OnSucceeded that should be invoked when the asynchronous Web Service call returns. If the Web Service in different Namespace you can refer it before the class name this Main formula may help you :  NameSpaceName.ClassName.WebMethdName(Parameters , Success callback function, Error callback function); Parameters: you can pass one or many parameters. Success callback function :handles returned data from the service . Error callback function :Any errors that occur when the Web Service is called will trigger in this function. • TDE Tablespace Encryption 11.2.0.1 Certified with EBS 12

  Oracle Advanced Security is an optional licenced Oracle 11g Database add-on.  Oracle Advanced Security Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) offers two different features:  column encryption and tablespace encryption.  11.2.0.1 TDE Column encryption was certified with E-Business Suite 12 as part of our overall 11.2.0.1 database certification.  As of today, 11.2.0.1 TDE Tablespace encryption is now certified with Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12. What is Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) ? Oracle Advanced Security Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) allows you to protect data at rest. TDE helps address privacy and PCI requirements by encrypting personally identifiable information (PII) such as Social Security numbers and credit card numbers. TDE is completely transparent to existing applications with no triggers, views or other application changes required. Data is transparently encrypted when written to disk and transparently decrypted after an application user has successfully authenticated and passed all authorization checks. Authorization checks include verifying the user has the necessary select and update privileges on the application table and checking Database Vault, Label Security and Virtual Private Database enforcement policies.
