• The right approach to loading dynamic content into a UITableView in iOS

  ok, I've read tons of bits and pieces on the subject of loading dynamic content (from the web) into a UITableView and the problem with calculating cell height upfront. I've tried different simple implementations but the problem persists... Assuming I need to read a JSON file from the web, parse it into 'item' objects, each with variable size image and various text labels, here is what I believe would be the right approach to avoid long hang time of the app while everything is loading: on app load read JSON file and parse into items array provide only small part of the items array to the tableview (about 10 items) - since I need to load the images associated with each item to calculate cell height - I don't want the view to go through the whole items list and load all images - this hangs the app until every image is loaded display the tableview with the available cells (assuming I load a few 'spare' ones, user can even scroll to more items) in the background using Grand Central Dispatch download images for all/some of the remaining items and then reload the tableview with the new data (repeat step 4 if item list is very long) Step 2 above is necessary since I have no way to calculate the cell height without loading the images first, and since tableview first calculates height of all cells it may take a very long time to download all images for all items. Would you say this is the right approach? am I missing something?

For example: I click button2. Alertbox appears with button2.id, then with div3.id, div2.id etc. It shows me all id's under that button. If i try to store this id to variable like this: var storedId = $(this).attr('id').toString(); it stores the last one.That means i get the id of form1. How can i get the first id? The id of clicked button or clicked label or whatever i have on my page.

• Database (MySQL) structuring: pros and cons of multiple tables

  I am collecting data and storing it MySQL, for: 75 variables 55 countries Each year I have, at this stage since I am building this tool created a single table, of variables / countries (storing 1 year worth of data). Next year (and for several years after that) a new set of data will be input for each country. There are therefore 3 variables in controlling data returned to a user reviewing all collected data. The general form of any query would be: Show me these specifics variables, for these specific countries, for these specific years. (Show me average age and weight, for USA and Canada, for 2012 and 2009, for example) My question is, it seems that I have two options for arranging this data: -Multiple tables where I create a table of country / variable for each year data is collected - Single table and simply add a column (field) for the year that data relates to. As far as I can tell I could make these database calls with either sructure, but is one more powerful / efficient / quicker, and why? Thanks for your consideration. It's a PDO / PHP interface if that is relevent.

  Is it possible to dynamically set a Spring MVC portlet:actionURL portlet:param using javascript? I have tried with the following code, but the id value always comes across as null to the controller. I have verified that setting the portlet:param manually passes the value correctly: <portlet:param name="id" value="2" /> I have also verified the value in the javascript is being set correctly and is not null. (Note: I've changed the variable names, etc. from the original code to simplify it and obfuscate it since it is my employer's code.)   I've this program which finds substring in a string. It works for small inputs. But fails for long inputs. Eclipse also doesn't give any helpful tips in its proposed fix, either. The variable value is of type T, why wouldn't it be applicable for ? extends T?.

The problem is I don't have access to definition of Lazy and MEF defines how the Lazy class create objects. I should notice the CompositionContainer has a thread-safe option in constructor which is already used. My questions: 1) Why the lock doesn't work ? 2) Should I use an array of locks instead of one lock for performance improvement ?

• MTD Expression on a single column - SSRS

  I need a bit of help here. I have been unable to create an 'Month To Date' expression to a single column on SSRS. I tested the following expression from a similar question in the forum, but it gives me a squiggly line below the variable 'd' =IIF(Fields!CreateDate.Value >= DateAdd(d,-7,Today()), Sum(Fields!Sales.Value), 0) If I run it, of course I got an error telling me that 'd' is not declared. ;) I changed it to ... DateAdd("d",-7,Today()), Sum(Fields!Sales.Value) ... following the example and the squiggly goes below the brackets of "today()" and needless to say it...but still not working. I tried a Dateadd(mm..Datediff ... and still nothing. My report has the following columns: Country | CustomerName | Sales | InvNotProcessed | Open Order | Orders | TotalbyCust What I need is to show the new MTD sales only in the column named "Sales" while the other three shows the rest of the query, which should be open as some orders may take quite a while to manufacture and invoice. the last column sums the totals of all other columns. As you can see, the function calls in the select statement pass a parameter to the function. How does the SQL statement know what value to replace the variable with? • How do I stop events from bubbling/multiple events with animated mouseovers?

  I noticed a lot of JQuery answers on this, but I'm using MooTools... I have a Table of Contents which uses CSS Fixed positioning to keep it off to the left side, except for 20 pixels. The user hovers their cursor over the 20 pixels, which fires the DIV's mouseover event and the ToC slides fully into the page. When the cursor leaves, the ToC slides back to where it was. $('frameworkBreakdown').addEvents({ 'mouseover': function(event){ event = new Event(event); $('frameworkBreakdown').tween('left', 20); event.stop; }, 'mouseout': function(event){ event = new Event(event); $('frameworkBreakdown').tween('left', (10 - $('frameworkBreakdown').getStyle('width').toInt()) ); event.stop; } }); This works well (aside from unrelated issues) except that when I move the mouse on the DIV it starts to jitter, presumably because the contents of the DIV are also firing the event, or the event refires as the mouse tracks over the DIV. How can I stop this behaviour from occuring? Is there a standard method, or do I use some sort of nast global variable that determines whether effects are in action, and thus ignore the event?

  In some code I'm trying to learn from, the Maze string below is turned into an array (code not shown for that) and saved in the instance variable @maze. The starting point of the Maze is represented by the letter 'A' in that Maze, which can be accessed at @maze[1][13]---row 1, column 13. However, the code I'm looking at uses @maze[1][13,1] to get the A, which you can see returns the same result in my console. If I do @maze[1][13,2], it returns the letter "A " with two blank spaces next to it, and so on. [13,3] returns "A " with three blank spaces. Does the 2 in [13,2] mean, "return two values starting at [1][13]? If so, why? Is this some feature of arrays or two dimensional arrays that I don't get? While I wrote the code above myself, the same can be found in many examples on the web. Does someone here spot anything wrong with it? Oh, and also: it only crashes in Release mode (in debug mode, all is fine).

• how do I use an enum value on a switch statement in C++

  I would like to use an enum value for my switch statment in C++. Is it possible to use the enum values enclosed in the "{}" as choices for the "switch()"? I know that switch() needs an integer value in order to direct the flow of programming to the appropriate case number. If this is the case, do I just make a variable for each constant in the 'enum' statment? • How can I work out if a date is on or before today?

  My web application consists of library type system where books have due dates. I have the current date displayed on my page, simply by using this: date_default_timezone_set('Europe/London'); $date = date; print $date("d/m/Y"); I have set 'date' as a variable because I'm not sure if it makes a difference when I use it in the IF statement you're about see, on my library books page. On this page, I am simply outputting the due dates of the books, many have dates which have not yet reached todays date, and others which have dates greater than todays date. Basically, all I want is the due date to appear bold (or strong), if it has passed todays date (the system displayed date). This is what I have and thought would work: <? if ($duedate < $date) { echo '<td><strong>'; } else { echo '<td>'; } ?> <?php echo $date('d/m/Y', $timestamp);?></strong></td> I have declared $timestamp as a var which converts the date of default MySQL format to a UK version. Can anyone help me out? I thought this would've been very straight forward!

• How to speed up drawing of scaled image? Audio playback chokes during window resize.

  I am writing an audio player for OSX. One view is a custom view that displays a waveform. The waveform is stored as a instance variable of type NSImage with an NSBitmapImageRep. The view also displays a progress indicator (a thick red line). Therefore, it is updated/redrawn every 30 milliseconds. Since it takes a rather long time to recalculate the image, I do that in a background thread after every window resize and update the displayed image once the new image is ready. In the meantime, the original image is scaled to fit the view like this: // The drawing rectangle is slightly smaller than the view, defined by // the two margins. NSRect drawingRect; drawingRect.origin = NSMakePoint(sideEdgeMarginWidth, topEdgeMarginHeight); drawingRect.size = NSMakeSize([self bounds].size.width-2*sideEdgeMarginWidth, [self bounds].size.height-2*topEdgeMarginHeight); [waveform drawInRect:drawingRect fromRect:NSZeroRect operation:NSCompositeSourceOver fraction:1]; The view makes up the biggest part of the window. During live resize, audio starts choking. Selecting the "big" graphic card on my Macbook Pro makes it less bad, but not by much. CPU utilization is somewhere around 20-40% during live resizes. Instruments suggests that rescaling/redrawing of the image is the problem. Once I stop resizing the window, CPU utilization goes down and audio stops glitching. I already tried to disable image interpolation to speed up the drawing like this: [[NSGraphicsContext currentContext] setImageInterpolation:NSImageInterpolationNone]; That helps, but audio still chokes during live resizes. Do you have an idea how to improve this? The main thing is to prevent the audio from choking.

• Getting the current item number or index when using will_paginate in rails app

  I have a rails app that stores movies watched, books read, etc. The index page for each type lists paged collections of all its items, using will_paginate to bring back 50 items per page. When I output the items I want to display a number to indicate what item in the total collection it is. The numbering should be reversed as the collection is displayed with most recent first. This might not relate to will_paginate but rather some other method of calculation. I will be using the same ordering in multiple types so it will need to be reusable. As an example, say I have 51 movies. The first item of the first page should display: Fight Club - Watched: 30th Dec 2010 Whilst the last item on the page should display: The Matrix - Watched: 3rd Jan 2010 The paged collection is available as an instance variable e.g. @movies, and @movies.count will display the number of items in the paged collection. So if we're on page 1, movies.count == 50, whilst on page 2 @movies.count == 1. Using Movie.count would give 51. If the page number and page size can be accessed the number could be calculated so how can they be returned? Though I'm hopeful there is something that already exists to handle this calculation!

  Hello SO; I've been fighting with this problem all day and am just about at my wit's end. I have an XML file in which certain portions of data are stored as escaped text but are themselves well-formed XML. I want to convert the whole hierarchy in this text node to a node-set and extract the data therein. No combination of variables and functions I can think of works. The way I'd expect it to work would be: <xsl:variable name="a" select="InnerXML"> <xsl:for-each select="exsl:node-set($a)/*"> 'do something </xsl:for-each> The input element InnerXML contains text of the form <root><element a>text</element a><element b><element c/><element d>text</element d></element b></root> but that doesn't really matter. I just want to navigate the xml like a normal node-set. Where am I going wrong?

Why does it not advance to the next row? if I move the code: $this->listing = $result->fetch_array() or die('could not create object'); foreach ($this->listing as $key => $value) : $info[$key] = stripslashes(html_entity_decode($value)); endforeach; if I move this outside the class, it works exactly as expected outputting a row at a time while looping through the while statement. Is there a way to write this so that I can keep the fetch_array() call in the class and still loop through the records?

  I've been going mad trying to figure out why an array would not be an array in php. For a reason I can't understand I have a bug in a smarty class. OR before with [] Warning: Cannot use a scalar value as an array in .... I trying a var_debug on $compiled_tags and as soon I enter the for loop is not an array anymore but an integer. I tried renaming the variable, but same problem. I'm sure is something simple that I missed but I can't figure it out. Any help is (as always) welcomed !

If N is the length of xs you have N-1 multiplications and 2N-3 sums (sums means + or -). Now suppose you know this variable: sum = $x_1^2 + x_N^2 + 2 sum_{i=2}^{N-1} x_i^2$ Expanding the binomial square: $sum_i^{N-1} (x_i-x_{i+1})^2 = sum - 2\sum_{i=1}^{N-1} x_i x_{i+1}$ so the code becomes: double sum2 = 0.; double prev = xs[0]; for (vector::const_iterator i = xs.begin() + 1; i != xs.end(); ++i) { sum2 += (*i) * prev; prev = (*i); } sum2 = -sum2 * 2. + sum; Here I have N multiplications and N-1 additions. In my case N is about 100. Well, compiling with g++ -O2 I got no speed up (I try calling the inlined function 2M times), why?

  I am trying to send an XML file to an external system. I am using the below code for doing so, which I got over the internet. But I observed that when i put an echo on the xml variable, it does not show me the XML as a string, but it is parsing the xml and showing me the values. Same is happening when I am sending this to external system. Which is failing. Can you please tell me a way, in which the XML is not parsed and I can send the entire XML text as a string to external system? • In Lua, can I easily select the Nth result without custom functions?

  Suppose I am inserting a string into a table as follows: table.insert(tbl, mystring) and that mystring is generated by replacing all occurrences of "a" with "b" in input: mystring = string.gsub(input, "a", "b") The obvious way to combine the two into one statement doesn't work, because gsub returns two results: table.insert(tbl, string.gsub(input, "a", "b")) -- error! -- (second result of gsub is passed into table.insert) which, I suppose, is the price paid for supporting multiple return values. The question is, is there a standard, built-in way to select just the first return value? When I found select I thought that was exactly what it did, but alas, it actually selects all results from N onwards, and so doesn't help in this scenario. Now I know I can define my own select as follows: function select1(n, ...) return arg[n] end table.insert(tbl, select1(1, string.gsub(input, "a", "b"))) but this doesn't look right, since I'd expect a built-in way of doing this. So, am I missing some built-in construct? If not, do Lua developers tend to use a separate variable to extract the correct argument or write their own select1 functions?
