  • Impossible to stop raid device

    - by Traroth
I'm trying to stop a RAID disk in order to replace it by a new one, as this one is not working properly. I'm typing mdadm --stop /dev/md1, and I'm getting an error message: mdadm: fail to stop array /dev/md1: Device or resource busy I'm getting this message even if I reboot the server, and I can't see a process that could cause this. The server is working under a Debian with a 2.6.18-4-amd64 kernel. Could you help? Edit: Mote details about what my colleague tried out. After unmounting sda1, the command mdadm --remove /dev/md0 /dev/sda1 worked. But now, we still have an error message after mdadm --remove /dev/md1 /dev/sda5: mdadm: hot remove failed for /dev/sda5: Device or resource busy I still don't understand completly how the different partitions are mounted, so I suppose there is something I don't understand in the currenct situation...

  • UNIX "find" command, match literal "dot"

    - by Robottinosino
I need files ending with ".pdf" or ".png"; here's my attempt: find /Users/robottinosino/Desktop/_PublishMe_ -type f -regex '.*[pdf|png]' this incorrectly includes files ending with "Apdf", "Zpdf", etc. (missing literal dot before file extension) I tried adjusting the pattern to: find /Users/robottinosino/Desktop/_PublishMe_ -type f -regex '.*\.[pdf|png]' but then no results are returned. Escaping the . with a backslash does not work. Why? [0] $ uname -a Darwin Robottinosino.local 10.8.0 Darwin Kernel Version 10.8.0: Tue Jun 7 16:33:36 PDT 2011; root:xnu-1504.15.3~1/RELEASE_I386 i386 Thanks!

  • Multiple VLANs on a single subnet

    - by mstaessen
I would like to establish the setup shown below. The image is taken from (http://gcharriere.com/blog/?p=620) and explains how to set this up on a brocade device. I would like to use an ubuntu server to do the routing. Right now, the switch and the server/router are connected with a trunk and the server uses the vlan package, kernel module and (inner) subnets for routing. I would like that: no IP addresses get lost in the subnetting (outer subnet is /26, inner subnets are /28) I don't want the rigorous subdivision of my outer subnet. I want to assign a VLAN to any IP in the outer subnet. How do I need to configure my interfaces? What is the "ubuntu" translation of "ip follow ve"? Thanks!

  • Is giving read permissions on /etc/shadow to apache user a wise decision from security point of view?

    - by Czar
I have to use PAM authentication for DAV SVN, but when everything is configured as specified in mod_auth_pam documentation, authentication does not work. After some research I realized, that for this to work, httpd should be running under root user (which I don't like and won't implement) or apache user (under which httpd is running by default) should have permissions to read /etc/shadow file. So there is a pair of questions connected to each other which I want to ask: Is giving this permition to apache user a wise decision from security point of view? If answer to the first question is "yes", what is the correct way to do so? For now I've done following: groupadd shadow usermod -G shadow apache chmod g+r /etc/shadow Another way I can come up with is using acl: setfacl -m u:apache:r /etc/shadow Note: OS is Fedora 14 x86_64 (kernel: 2.6.35.11) httpd v2.2.17 mod_auth_pam v1.1.1

  • Implementing Communication Protocols on CC2420 motes powered by TinyOS

    - by stanigator
I would like to load TinyOS on CC2420 radio motes to operate on certain communication protocols (e.g. epidemic routing, probabilistic routing, etc.). However, I have no prior experience in programming motes to perform the protocols I want. I'm just wondering about the most applicable resources for reference and how difficult (if not impossible) was implementing such mentioned protocols. It would be great to hear from you. Thanks in advance!

  • How does UITableViewController knows its dataSource and delegate

    - by denniss
I am following the BigNerdRanch iOS Programming book and I am on this one chapter that deals with UITableViewController. I have been wondering however where UITableViewController finds out about its delegate and dataSource. Currently I have it as @interface ItemsViewController : UITableViewController <UITableViewDataSource, UITableViewDelegate> But there is nothing that looks like: [self.tableView setDelegate:self] I am just wondering how the UITableViewController finds out about its delegate and dataSource

  • Where can I find a good software implementation plan template?

    - by Corpsekicker
This is not "programming" related as much as it is "software engineering" related. I am required to produce an implementation for additional functionality to a complete system. All I am armed with is knowledge of the existing architecture and a functional spec with visual requirements, user stories and use cases. Is there a standardised way to go about this? I suck at documentation.

  • Blue screen MEMORY_MANAGEMENT on Windows 7 Enterprise

    - by Lucas Kauffman
I'm running a machine (MSI GT 70) with 32 GB ram as a mobile server. It seems that at random points in time it will BSOD with as message MEMORY_MANAGEMENT. So the first thing I did was do several memtests, but they did not give away any defective modules. I'm a bit clueless at the moment as it just seems to happen at random points in time giving me little or no indication of what might be wrong. I opened up the dumps with BSODviewer, they just seem to point to the windows kernel. I tried reinstalling Windows but the behavior remains the same.

  • Where can I find an ADOExpress tutorial?

    - by mawg
I'm using Delphi 7, totally new to database programming, and need ODBC. I am told that ADOExpress is a good way to go, and that seems fair enough as it comes with Delphi 7. I need to programatically create, populate, modify and query a database (currently MySql, but that might change, hence ODBC). Can anyone recommend a good tutorial? Thanks.

  • How do you manage updates without a staging environment: CentOS 6.3

    - by Gregg Leventhal
I am managing about 20 servers, many of them virtual. They are almost all different purpose, and none are clustered. I have a distributed LAMP stack, a few application servers, some build servers, a few KVM hosts. They are CentOS 6.3 mostly with a few Ubuntu (unfortunately). I don't have the resources to setup a staging environment where I can have duplicates of my machines and test updates before rolling them out. I am taking file backups. What I want to know is how you are approaching backing up your Linux systems. I assume you don't just do yum update, but then how are you choosing the packages worthy of updating? When (if ever) are you updating the kernel, etc.. How do you test updates without a staging environment? Snapshot and hope for the best?

  • Double paging definition

    - by Albinoswordfish
This is not a programming question but more of an operating system question Right now I'm trying to learn what exactly Double paging means. I see two different terms, double paging on disk and double paging in memory. Apparently this problem arises when we introduce a buffer cache to store disk blocks when doing File I/O But I'm not really sure what exactly this term means. If anybody could specify it would be very helpful.

  • How would you explain your job to a 5-year old?

    - by Canavar
Sometimes it's difficult to define programming to people. Especially too old or too young people can not understand what I do to earn money. They think that I repair computers, or they want to think that I (as an engineer) build computers at work. :) It's really hard to tell people that you produce something they can't touch. Here is a funny question, how would you explain your job to a 5-year-old?

  • Can somebody link me to some code where there is a fantastic or a nice use of Inheritance

    - by Soham
I strongly believe that, reading code and reading good code is key to great programming. If not one of the many. I had been facing some problems in visualizing and having a "feel" of using inheritance to better my code architecture. Can somebody give me some link to good code to emulate, where folks have used inheritance in an absolute "kung-fooey ruthless" manner [in a good way]

  • Best IDE macro tools to combat the verbosity of Java syntax for someone with carpal tunnel?

    - by Carlsberg
I have a bad case of carpal tunnel so I'm looking for an editor that would make my Java programming less painful (literally!). Does anyone have any recommendations for tools that you can add to Eclipse, Netbeans or other IDEs to produce some of the repetitive code that's common in Java syntax? Overall what would be the best code editor for this purpose? (I'm coding on Ubuntu, in case it matters).

  • piping in UNIX doubt

    - by Happy Mittal
In The Unix Programming Environment by K & P, it is written that " The programs in a pipeline actually run at the same time, not one after another. This means that programs in a pipeline can be interactive;" How can programs run at same time? For ex: $ who | grep mary | wc -l How grep mary will be executed until who is run or how wc -l will be executed until it knows results of previous programs?
