  • using FUNCTION instead of CREATE FUNCTION oracle pl/sql

    I see people writing a function with FUNCTION instead "CREATE FUNCTION". When I saw this usage in the web I thought it was a typo or something. But in Oreilly's "Oracle 11g PL/SQL Programming" by Steven Feurenstein, the author had used the same thing. But I get errors when I execute that. Could somebody explain is it legal usage or not?.   • Objects With No Behavior

    I've been teaching myself object oriented programming and I'm thinking about a situation where I have an object "Transaction", that has quite a few properties to it like account, amount, date, currency, type, etc. I never plan to mutate these data points, and calculation logic will live in other classes. My question is, is it poor Python design to instantiate thousands of objects just to hold data? I find the data far easier to work with embedded in a class rather than trying to cram it into some combination of data structures.

  • How to debug high memory usage by registry?

    I have a windows 2008 r2 server running ADFS2 and some web apps that is having issues with low memory. Digging around I found that the 5.5 GB were being used under Kernel Memory (paged). Further digging with Poolmon, I discovered that the majority of that (5GB+) was being used by CM - configuration manager. Also known as the registry. I'm really now sure how to tell why the registry is using so much memory however, or how to release it? Looking at the physical registry files they don't appear that large.     I am newbie to iPhone programming. I am not using Interface Builder in my programming. I have some doubt about memory management, @property topics in iPhone. I saw this statement in many sample programs but didn't understood the need of it. When I declare @property (nonatomic, retain) UIImageView *preview; statement the retain Count is 0. Why doesn't it increase by 1 inspite of retaining it in @property. Also when I declare [self.view addSubview:preview]; then retain Count increments by 1 again. In this case does the "Autorelease pool" releases for us later or we have to take care of releasing it. I am not sure but I think that the Autorelease should handle it as we didn't explicitly retained it so why should we worry of releasing it. Now, after the [preview release]; statement my count is 1. Now I don't need UIImageView anymore in my program so when and where should I release it so that the count becomes 0 and the memory gets deallocated. What will happen if I release it in -(void) dealloc method In the statement - flag = [UIImage imageNamed:@"myImage.png"]]; I haven't allocated any memory to flag but how can I still use it in my program. In this case if I do not allocate memory then who allocates & deallocates memory to it or is the "flag" just a reference pointing to - [UIImage imageNamed:@"myImage.png"]];. If it is a reference only then do i need to release it. Thanks in advance.

Suppose I have a project that uses Autotools for compiling and deployment, and I have data files that are to be installed in a location like /var/something or /usr/share/something etc., but in Autoconf, I can change these installation paths. How should the program find these files? How does it know where they are actually installed (if anywhere, since the program should work even if not installed, but run from where it was built)?

  • How do you manage updates without a staging environment: CentOS 6.3

    I am managing about 20 servers, many of them virtual. They are almost all different purpose, and none are clustered. I have a distributed LAMP stack, a few application servers, some build servers, a few KVM hosts. They are CentOS 6.3 mostly with a few Ubuntu (unfortunately). I don't have the resources to setup a staging environment where I can have duplicates of my machines and test updates before rolling them out. I am taking file backups. What I want to know is how you are approaching backing up your Linux systems. I assume you don't just do yum update, but then how are you choosing the packages worthy of updating? When (if ever) are you updating the kernel, etc.. How do you test updates without a staging environment? Snapshot and hope for the best?

  • Linux: don't use file system cache under a directory

    For a PHP website I'm monitoring, I need to see what files are being used each time the browser makes a request. I thought of using find . -type f -amin 1. With that I get all files which were read in the last minute (it's a developing server so only I am using the website). I took care of removing the noatime attribute from the mounting point. However there must be something else that's preventing the kernel from reading the actual files on disk because the access time is not being updated when I read a file. I guess it must be the file-system cache which is retrieving the files from memory. Is there a way to disable file caching under a specific directory? (public_html in my case) Also I read somewhere that there is the nobh mounting atributes which apparently disables file caching under that mounting point, but I'm not sure.

    I'm running a machine (MSI GT 70) with 32 GB ram as a mobile server. It seems that at random points in time it will BSOD with as message MEMORY_MANAGEMENT. So the first thing I did was do several memtests, but they did not give away any defective modules. I'm a bit clueless at the moment as it just seems to happen at random points in time giving me little or no indication of what might be wrong. I opened up the dumps with BSODviewer, they just seem to point to the windows kernel. I tried reinstalling Windows but the behavior remains the same.

  • Mount encrypted hfs in ubuntu

    I try to mount an encrypted hfs+ partition in ubuntu. An older post described quite good how to do it, but lacks the information how to use encrypted partitions. What I found so far is: # install required packages sudo apt-get install hfsprogs hfsutils hfsplus loop-aes-utils # try to mount it mount -t hfsplus -o encryption=aes-256 /dev/xyz /mount/xyz But once I run this I get the following error: Error: Password must be at least 20 characters. So I tried to type it in twice, but that results in this: ioctl: LOOP_SET_STATUS: Invalid argument, requested cipher or key (256 bits) not supported by kernel Any suggestions? Thx Edit: One thing I'm not sure about is whether I use the right password. My assumption is that it is my default one for these situations. But I'm not sure whether Max OSX choose another password (internally) for that.

    I was trying to bring up my custom kernel. I did the following : make menuconfig && make modules && make modules_install && make install I would like to change the install PATH. How can i do that? I tried doing export INSTALL_PATH=<my custom path> But then it is only creating the vmlinux.bin(it is not creating the ramdisk image!!) But if i am not doing that, make install will automatically create the ramdisk image in the default /boot folder. How can i change that?? Thanks, Sen

  • ubuntu Grub boot hangs on external usb drive

    Hi, i just gave xubuntu another try and installed it ordinarily on a external usb harddisk. I have another harddisk installed inside the laptop that has Windows Xp on it. Now the problem: When I boot from the external drive the boot menu of Grub 2 shows up and i see all installed bootable partitions including windows. Now I select Xubuntu and wait. When the Xubuntu Logo shows up the boot process hangs. Now the funny thing. When the logo shows up I can unplug the usb drive and reconnect it real fast. Then the boot process will continue!!! Since I am a Linux newbie I would appreciate every hint that can solve this so that I can enjoy a smooth Linux boot:-) EDIT Grub version is: tobias@ubuntu:~$ grub-install -v grub-install (GRUB) 1.98+20100804-5ubuntu3 Kernel is: tobias@ubuntu:~$ uname -r 2.6.35-23-generic Xubuntu is 9.10 Thanks

  • GRUB2 UEFI booting from LVM on RAID (with XEN)

    I'm experimenting with booting root fs from LVM volume inside the raid (mdraid superblock 1.x) via UEFI with GRUB2. Also I'm using Xen hypervisor. From grub command line I can see my lvm volume (ls command) but I got kernel panic due to "unable to mount root fs". I saw a note in this article telling it's probably impossible to boot root fs from raid via UEFI, but I don't understand the reason why not. Is it possible to boot linux with this configuration without the initramfs (which I don't won't to use)?
