• Which Large File System Format to use for USB Flash drive compatible with Ubuntu/Mac/Windows?

  I've had this problem for a long time and can't find a solution. I switch between the 3 OSes all the time and use a 1TB USB Drive to do so. I can't seem to find a format that is compatible across all systems that handles large files (at least 8-9 GB). Does anyone have a solution for this? Recently I've tried exFat but that messes up the filesystem when trying to read on windows after adding files from Ubuntu (using the fuse driver). The OSes currently I'm using are Windows Vista/7, Mac OS X (10.6.5) and Ubuntu 10.10

• Markup format or script for data files?

  The game I'm designing will be mainly written in a high level scripting language (leaning towards either Lua or Squirrel) with a C++ core. In addition to scripts I'm also going to need different data files. Many data files will be for static information such as graphical assets and monster types. I'd also want to create and update data files at runtime for user information like option settings and game saves. Can I get away with using plain script files (i.e. .lua or .nut files) for my data files, or is it better to use dedicated markup formats like XML or YAML? If I use script files, loaded separately from my true scripts, then I wouldn't need an extra library to read those files. Scripting languages like Lua also have table syntax that lend themselves towards data definition. On the other hand I'd have to write my own schema check code. These languages also don't seem to support serialization "out of the box" like the markup format libraries do.

• What is the practical use of IBOs / degenerate vertex in OpenGL?

  Vertices in 3D models CAN get cut in the process of optimizing 3D geometry, (degenerate vertices) by 3D graphics software (Blender, ...) when exporting because they aren't needed when reusing a vertex for multiple triangles. (In the current case 3D data is exported from Blender as .ply and read by a simple application that displays the 3D model) Every vertex has a few attributes like position, color, normal, tangent,... But the data for each vertex that is cut through the vertex sharing is lost and is missing in the vertex shader. Modern shader techniques like Bump or Normal mapping require normals/tangents per vertex which are also cut. To use complex shader techniques IBOs must not be used? Or is there a way to use IBOs and retain the data per vertex that was origionally lost?

  Just posting this blog tonight hoping it might save someone else a bunch of time. For call recording on Skype, I use a program called Pamela. Lately, when I'd first installed it, it would work fine. Later, however, it would come up and say: "Another application (Pamela.exe) is attempting to access Skype, but we are unable to respond".   I need to find an active Java mailing list, I have looked onto the GNU Java mailing list, to my surprise there had been not too much activity this month, it also focused on any GNU related Java - I'd really help me progress my Java ability, if I had an active, likeminded Java mailing list. Questions' that are not suited to Stackoverflow, or provide little benefit to any user that see's the question: discussing a new API change; best practices; open source discussion; trivia type questions on Java ArrayList boxining-unboxing; Community atmosphere. I also read Jon Skeets blog post about his previous Java/C# mailing lists examples - I did not catch any names, though I did they would be of benefit to me, if I had access to any of them.

• How to use PAM to restrict HTTP access for some users?

  I've read that PAM can be used to restrict HTTP access for some users, but I can't figure out how to do it in Ubuntu 12.04. The /etc/security/time.conf man page contains this example: All users except for root are denied access to console-login at all times: login ; tty* & !ttyp* ; !root ; !Al0000-2400 For this to work, /etc/pam.d/login needs to have a line account requisite pam_time.so This example works, and I tried to adapt it to limit HTTP access from the console. I added http ; tty* & !ttyp* ; !root ; !Al0000-2400 to /etc/security/time.conf, and created /etc/pam.d/http with account requisite pam_time.so This doesn't work. I can still use wget as non-root from the console.

• Services - Separate Sites or One Site - Impact on SEO

  I have a client who is a lawyer that specializes in Criminal Defense and DUI, however, he does not show up well in Google. In researching the sites that rank better have much more content for those specialties than his site does and my thought it that he needs to add more quality content to rank better for those searches. On his site he mentions his specialties, but also he has various personal things on his sites that reflect his interest. These are clearly separated from the business portion. My questions are should he 1) separate his personal information into a new domain and 2) should he have a separate URL for each of his specialties? OR would one URL work as long as everything is clearly separated? I read once that for legal services to rank well you should make a separate site for each specialty and have that site focus solely on that service.

• ubuntu 14 painfully slow on dell r200

  I didn't notice it at first. The machines (there is 20 plus) are to be used a simple file servers. It wasn't until samba just wouldn't act right that I installed a desktop gui and started more diagnoseing the problem did I catch the slow preformance... I've tested 4 servers they all suck. And windows 7 runs fantastic on them. I have Google and searched. But nothing to explain this. The easy test is dmesg is so slow you can almost read it. I'm guessing it's an apic or cpu power management issue. What output would you all like????? It is a core2 machine with 4Gb of ram. On board data.

  I've successfully installed Qwt in Xubuntu 12.04(qmake - make - make install). But now I need to set the Qwt path to run time linker of Xubuntu. In manual it's given like - If you have installed a shared library it's path has to be known to the run-time linker of your operating system. On Linux systems read "man ldconfig" ( or google for it ). Another option is to use the LD_LIBRARY_PATH (on some systems LIBPATH is used instead, on MacOSX it is called DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH) environment variable. But being newbie to Linux environment, I'm not able to proceed further. Please help me with this.

• Website hosting and deployment

  I'm relatively new to Web Development especially when it comes to infrastructure. I have AngularJS application build and served by brunch.io locally. It uses rails-api JSON data. I'd like to deploy my angular application separately from rails server. For now, JS app is placde inside public directory of backend server and deployed together. It isn't elegant nor effective so I want to use some other hosting service. I was thinking about VPS where I could place both Angular and Ruby applications. I read about NodeJS or Nginx that can serve static files, but I don't have any knowledge or experience with these technologies. How is the best way to provide separate frontend and backend applications communicating with each other?

• Are there any good guides for making mods for Minecraft?

  I've been coding in Java for 5 months at work now, and having past experience with programming in other languages, modifying existing code at Uni etc. I feel like I want to get started on (read: continue learning to program by) modding with minecraft. I know what I need, but not exactly how to do so. I once saw some good guides on the minecraft forum, but they all explained how to write in java, hows different classes in the code work etc. I'm more interested in how you decompile the code, write your own separate from the main 'trunk' of minecraft and then package it to install with a tool like 'Magic Loader'. My issue with these guides is that they always relied on being in windows, but I'm primarily a linux user, and the guides on the forums only seemed to assume you were on a Windows box. So is there a good 'walkthrough' for modding for Minecraft? Especially one where it assumes or at least allows for the fact you are in linux?

  Is a small amount of lighthearted wording or humor acceptable in source code documentation? For example, I have an algorithm that has a message hop around a graph (network) until its path forms a cycle. When this happens it is removed from the queue of the node it last resided on which removes it from memory. I write that in a comment, and finish the comment with "Rest in peace, little guy". That serves very little documenting purpose, but it cheers me up a bit, and I imagine it might cheer up other people I'm working with as they read through the code. Is this an acceptable practice, or should my in-code documentation resemble as much as possible the speeches of 2004 presidential candidate John Kerry? ;-)

• MEF to the rescue in Task-it

  One of the frameworks that I chose to leverage in the development of my Silverlight 4 Task-It application is MEF, the Managed Extensibility Framework. Actually, that decision came while I was at a Silverlight Deep Dive session on the Microsoft campus in Redmond, WA, and came at the recommendation of John Papa (Microsoft Silverlight Evangelist) and Glenn Block (the MEF Maniac). If you are not familiar with MEF, its primary function is to provide a framework for extensibility in Silverlight applications, however, what I found is that MEF's capabilities go beyond just this. As a matter of fact, Microsoft announced at MIX this week that its new Silverlight Analytics Framework would use MEF for composition. • iPhone 3d Model format: .h file, .obj, or some other?

  I'm beginning to write an iPhone game using OpenGL-ES and I've come across a problem with deciding what format my 3D models should be in. I've read (link escapes me at the moment) that some developers prefer the models compiled in Objective-C .h files. Still, others prefer having .obj as these are more portable (i.e., for deployment on non-iPhone platforms). Various 3D game engines seem to support many(?) formats, but I'm not going to use any of these engines as I would like to actually learn OpenGL-ES. Am I putting myself at a disadvantage here by not using a packaged engine? Thanks!

• Create an Asynchronous JAX-WS Web Service and call it from Oracle BPEL 11g

  This posting is the result of a simple requirement to take an existing JAX-WS Web service,convert it to be asynchronous and call it from Oracle BPEL 11g It turned out that this is not a trivial task... BPEL has some very specific expectations about the WSDL for an asynchronous process. One approach is to develop the service starting from a WSDL document that meets BPEL's requirements. This is possible but requires considerable WSDL authoring skills. The other approach is to modify the WSDL generated by Web Service Annotations in Java code (Bottom up development) and instruct JAX-WS to use that WSDL instead of dynamically generating one from annotations. This is the approach taken in this article. This posting details how to: Modify a JAX-WS Web Service developed using a "Bottom up " approach to have an asynchronous method and callback. Now here is the question, WindowsA LinuxB, (Program on Windows) Run Windows Program On Linux, using a windows resources. How to make it work? BTW, I know it can because years ago, I read a white paper on it, but never actually tested it out.
