• how to convince other we should move to hadoop?

  Everything I've read about Hadoop seems like exactly the technology we need to make our enterprise more scalable. We have terabytes of raw data that is in non-relational form (text files of some kind). We're quickly approaching the upper limits of what our centralized file server can handle and everyone is aware of this. Most people on the tech team, especially the more junior members of the tech team are all in favor of moving from the central file system to HDFS. The problem is, there is one key (most senior, etc.) member of the team who is resisting this change and every time Hadoop comes up, he tells us that we could simply add another file server and be in the clear. So, my question (and yes, it's really subjective, but I need more help with this than any of my other questions) is what steps can we take to get upper management to move forward with Hadoop despite the hesitation of one member of the team?

• How Byte loading/storing is implemented By the CPU?

  I know that in 32bit machine, cpu read from memory 32bits at a time. since the registers in this case is 32bit in size too, I can understand how this works. What I don't understand is how the cpu implement load instructions of 1 byte. does it load the whole word where the single byte is located to the register, then perform some kind of "byte shifting", or does the cpu can load a single byte, in this case when does the byte masking happen, is it until the byte got loaded in the register, or it happen when byte is send through the data bus ? P.S. The cpu Im using is MIPS, the instructions Im talking about are: lb or lbu

• Reading cpu temperature Intel Celeron (R) with lm-sensors

  I know there are already a lot of questions like this, but non of the answers provided there could fix my problem. I try to read out my cpu temperature with lm-sensors on my ubuntu 10.04 LTS installation but I can't get to work. I did try the command sensors-detect several times but still nothing. My computer is an old PC with an Intel Celeron (R) @ 2.60 GHz. The odd thing is that the hdd temp is shown in the applet but when I type in the terminal sensors I get the error: "No sensors found! Make sure you loaded all the kernel drivers you need." I'm not really interested in the hdd temperature but I think it is strange that these sensors do work in the applet and not in the terminal.   I am a front-end developer. For many experiements I do I need to have a server that talks JSON with my client side app. Normally that server is a simple server that response to my POSTs and GETs. • How do I get the Netgear N150 USB wifi adapter working on 12.04?

  Just installed latest version of ubuntu. I'm using a Netgear N150 Wireless USB Micro Adapter WNA1000M which keeps asking for network password over and over. I read elsewhere that I needed to install the latest driver for my chipset (RTL8188CUS) which I have and still no joy. If I run the steps listed in this thread while connected through ethernet, the wireless will connect just fine. If I disconnect the ethernet, the wifi will even continue to work, but after a restart or two I will lose connection. If I repeat the steps listed in the aforementioned thread, it will not re-connect wifi unless I run those steps while connected to ethernet.......so strange...

• HP 6735s Brightness hotkey problem; where is brightness panel?

  I have installed ubuntu 11.10 on my laptop hp 6735s. The screen is often too dark and i want to make it brighter, although the hotkeys Fn+F7/F8 are not working. I have tried some things: Firstly it appears that sometimes they are in fact working, after reboot they either work and continue to do so or they don't. I've read about a brightness applet; but where can i find or install it? I have tried some grub options; acpi_osi=Linux and acpi_backlight=vendor but nothing changes. I don't want to add another question but since it might be related: my laptop also gets quite hot, i'm having doubts whether ubuntu connects to the available sensors and cooling plans (or how does it work???); sensors (or psensor) only shows 2 sensors both named temp1. Any help is greatly appreciated! Paul

  Hello, I want to add some lines which should execute every time Ubuntu boots up, so I don't have to change them manually everytime. I've read in some place that you should edit this file /etc/rc.local. However when I add the lines I want to execute at start up it doesn't run those lines. So I wonder where the start up file is located in ubuntu?   I am looking for a book about the Unix command-line toolkit (sh, grep, sed, awk, cut, etc.) that I read some time ago. It was an excellent book, but I totally forgot its name. The great thing about this specific book was the running example. It showed how to implement a university bookkeeping system using only text-processing tools. You would find a student by name with grep, update grades with sed, calculate average grades with awk, attach grades to IDs with cut, and so on. If my memory serve, this book had a black cover, and was published circa 1980. Does anyone remember this book? I would appreciate any help in finding it.

It looks like that distance field pixels which are created around original pixel may affect 2d texture sampling interpolation process. But I can't understand the interpolation process. I've read that the distance field rendering is processed under nearest-neighbour interpolation. If it is true, shouldn't the distance field redering creates non interpolated result? In my thought, they should looks liked retro style pixel art. Where do i misunderstand in this process? So far, It is no difference with alpha test for me. Both of them throw away all pixcel which are not in. How does extra distance field pixel affect rendering under nearest-neighbour interpolation?

  What alternatives exist of how an agent can follow the path calculated by a path-finding algorithm? I've seen that the most easy form is go to one point and when the agent has reached this point, discard it and go to the next point. I think that this approach has problems when the game has physics with dynamic objects that can block the travel between point A and point B, then the agent is taken from his original trayectory and sometimes go to the last destiny point is not the most natural behavior. In the literature always I have read that the path is only a suggestion of where the agent has to go, but I don't know how this suggested path must be followed. Thanks.

  I had read an interview with a great programmer (it is not in English) and in it he said that "a great programmer can be as 100 times as good as a mediocre one" giving reason for why good programmers are very well paid and why programming companies give many facilities for their employees. The idea was that there is a very large demand for good programmers, because of the above reason and that's why companies pay very much to bring them. Do you agree with this statement? Do you know any objective facts that could support it? Edit: The question has nothing to do with experience; if you talk about one great programmer with 1 year experience then s/he should be 10 times more productive than a mediocre programmer with 1 year experience. I agree that from certain experience years onwards, things start to dissipate but that's not the purpose of the question.

• 12.04 Install Freeze, Blank Cursor Page

  I have been trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 via a live CD and most recently with the windows installer I found on line. The windows installer seemed to be working; I selected the partitioned portion of the drive on which to install Ubuntu and started the install process. The process freezes on a page with a flashing cursor and nothing else displayed. I have read about similar problems but have not been able to implement any of the solutions people have discussed. Any ideas on what might be hanging up the process, or how to get a better idea of what is causing the problem would be helpful. If anyone has had this problem and has a solution it would be GREATLY appreciated!

• Gzip compress offline?

  I've configured my site to serve compressed content by putting this line in .htaccess AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE text/html text/plain text/xml text/javascript text/css application/javascript application/json This works perfectly for almost all files except a few large JSON files that are above 200Kb. For some reason they are not being compressed. I see that they don't using the net tab in firebug and the Network section in chrome. So as a workaround I thought I could compress these files offline and have Apache read them compressed. What tool should I use to compress them? is the linux gzip the one? any special flags or something I should use? What should I put in .htaccess so that the server would know to serve these files with content-encoding gzip ?
