• How can I get my Web API app to run again after upgrading to MVC 5 and Web API 2?

  I upgraded my Web API app to the funkelnagelneu versions using this guidance: http://www.asp.net/mvc/tutorials/mvc-5/how-to-upgrade-an-aspnet-mvc-4-and-web-api-project-to-aspnet-mvc-5-and-web-api-2 However, after going through the steps (it seems all this should be automated, anyway), I tried to run it and got, "A project with an Output Type of Class Library cannot be started directly" What in Sam Hills Brothers Coffee is going on here? Who said this was a class library? So I opened Project Properties, and changed it (it was marked as "Class Library" for some reason - it either wasn't yesterday, or was and worked fine) to an Output Type of "Windows Application" ("Console Application" and "Class Library" being the only other options). Now it won't compile, complaining: "*Program 'c:\Platypus_Server_WebAPI\PlatypusServerWebAPI\PlatypusServerWebAPI\obj\Debug\PlatypusServerWebAPI.exe' does not contain a static 'Main' method suitable for an entry point...*" How can I get my Web API app back up and running in view of this quandary? UPDATE Looking in packages.config, two entries seem chin-scratch-worthy: <package id="Microsoft.AspNet.Providers" version="1.2" targetFramework="net40" /> <package id="Microsoft.Web.Infrastructure" version="1.0.0.0" targetFramework="net40" /> All the others target net451. Could this be the problem? Should I remove these packages? UPDATE 2 I tried to uninstall the Microsoft.Web.Infrastructure package (its description leads me to believe I don't need it; also, it has no dependencies) via the NuGet package manager, but it tells me, "NuGet failed to install or uninstall the selected package in the following project(s). [mine]" UPDATE 3 I went through the steps in again, and found that I had missed one step. I had to change this entry in the Application web.config File : <dependentAssembly> <assemblyIdentity name="System.Web.Mvc" publicKeyToken="31bf3856ad364e35" /> <bindingRedirect oldVersion="1.0.0.0-5.0.0.0" newVersion="5.0.0.0" /> </dependentAssembly> (from "4.0.0.0" to "5.0.0.0") ...but I still get the same result - it rebuilds/compiles, but won't run, with "A project with an Output Type of Class Library cannot be started directly" UPDATE 4 Thinking about the err msg, that it can't directly open a class library, I thought, "Sure you can't/won't -- this is a web app, not a project. So I followed a hunch, closed the project, and reopened it as a website (instead of reopening a project). That has gotten me further, at least; now I see a YSOD: Could not load file or assembly 'System.Web.WebPages.Razor, Version=3.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified. UPDATE 5 Note: The project is now (after being opened as a web site) named "localhost_48614" And...there is no longer a "References" folder...?!?!? As to that YSOD I'm getting, the official instructions (http://www.asp.net/mvc/tutorials/mvc-5/how-to-upgrade-an-aspnet-mvc-4-and-web-api-project-to-aspnet-mvc-5-and-web-api-2) said to do this, and I quote: "Update all elements that contain “System.Web.WebPages.Razor” from version “2.0.0.0” to version“3.0.0.0”." UPDATE 6 When I select Tools Library Package Manager Manage NuGet Packages for Solution now, I get, "Operation failed. Unable to locate the solution directory. Please ensure that the solution has been saved." So I save it, and it saves it with this funky new name (C:\Users\clay\Documents\Visual Studio 2013\Projects\localhost_48614\localhost_48614.sln) I get the Yellow Strip of Enlightenment across the top of the NuGet Package Manager telling me, "Some NuGet packages are missing from this solution. Click to restore from your online package sources." I do (click the "Restore" button, that is), and it downloads the missing packages ... I end up with the 30 packages. I try to run the app/site again, and ... the erstwhile YSOD becomes a compilation error: The pre-application start initialization method Start on type System.Web.Mvc.PreApplicationStartCode threw an exception with the following error message: Could not load file or assembly 'System.Web.WebPages.Razor, Version=3.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified.. Argghhhh!!! (and it's not even talk-like-a-pirate day).

• news feed using .Net Dataservices / OData / Atom ?

  Let's say I have an web CMS type application, and an EDM model with an entity called 'article', and I need to offer the ability for client applications, to a read/query the articles (and other resources stored in our database) a straightforward syndication feed of these articles to end users (along the lines of a simple RSS feed) It seems to me that for the first task, and .net 4's dataservice would be perfect for the job. For the second case, I'm wondering (a) whether atom the right format to choose - I think it is - and (b) whether it's possible to achieve such a feed using the same ado.net OData service. (as a result, when you check this feed in a feed reader, you will see no title). I searched msdn but haven't found a way to do that, but it should be possible. Stackoverflow itself uses an atom feed in that fashion, so it should be possible. Right? So I suppose my question is; Is there a way to make the ado.net dataservice Atom feed look like something suitable for your average news feed reader? - OR, am I using the wrong tool for the wrong purposes, and should I be looking elsewhere (.net syndication API's perhaps)?

• Unable to browse some pdfs and docs.

  I have a web site that uses Microsoft Indexing Service to index and query a directory that holds various documents of type pdf, rtf, mht, and doc. The indexing and querying works well (for the most part); however, some files will load while others will not. This is a Windows Server 2003 box running the site using IIS 6. The indexed directory is a sub directory off of the site's root directory (i.e. http://my.domain.com/files/). The file paths are accurate in the URL; however, I can only access some of the files of each file type. The files that I cannot access give a 404 File Not Found. I am able to open all files via windows explorer;however, attempting to open them via a browser over http is hit and miss. Has anyone experienced this issue and know how to resolve it? Anyone have any idea why I could access some files but not others? Does anyone have any recommendations on what to look into to try this (i.e. does owner matter or something like that?)? • Geolocation through Android's GPS Provider on a website?

  I'm trying to get the geolocation of the mobile device in a regular website, not a webview of an application or anything native like that. I'm getting a location, but it's highly inaccurate, the accuracy comes back as 3230 or some other outrageous number. I'm assuming that's in meters, either way it's not nearly accurate enough. By comparison, the same webpage on a laptop gets an accuracy of 30-40. My first thought was that it was using the Network Provider instead of the GPS Provider, telling me where I am based on tower location and reach. A little research later I found enableHighAccuracy and set it true in the options that I pass. After including that, I still notice no difference. In case rooting was a problem, I have also had various friends and coworkers try the webpage on their non-rooted 2.0+ Android devices. Each phone had various effects on the accuracy, but none were better than 1000, I attribute this to the different carriers. I have not (but eventually will) tested with iPhone or other location-aware cell phones.

• Reading data in from file

  Hi Here is link if you want to download application: Simple banking app Text file with data to read I am trying to create a simple banking application that reads in data from a text file. So far i have managed to read in all the customers which there are 20 of them. However when reading in the accounts and transactions stuff it only reads in 20 but there is alot more in the text file.   Alright, I'm trying to make an AJAX Chat system that polls the chat database every 400ms. That part is working, the part of which isn't is the Active User List. When I try to combine the two requests, the first two requests are made, then the whole thing snowballs and the usually timed (12 second) Active User List request starts updating every 1ms and the first request NEVER happens again. It seems squid is working just fine and accepts my username and password and lets me out. But if i connect to dans guardian, it prompts for username and password and then displays a message saying my username is not allowed to access the internet. Its pulling my username for the error message so i know it knows who i am. The part i get confused on is i thought that part was handled all by squid, and squid is working flawlessly. • WPF storyboard animation issue when using VisualBrush

  Hey guys, I was playing around with storyboards, a flipping animation, and visual brushes. I have encountered an issue though. Below is the xaml and code-behind of a small sample I quickly put together to try to demonstrate the problem. When you first start the app, you are presented with a red square and two buttons. If you click the "Flip" button, the red square will "flip" over and a blue one will appear. In reality, all that is happening is that the scale of the width of the StackPanel that the red square is in is being decreased until it reaches zero and then the StackPanel where a blue square is, whose width is initially scaled to zero, has its width increased. If you click the "Flip" button a few times, the animation looks ok and smooth. Now, if you hit the "Reflection" button, a reflection of the red/blue buttons is added to their respective StackPanels. Hitting the "Flip" button now will still cause the flip animation but it is no longer a smooth animation. The StackPanels width often does not shrink to zero. The width shrinks somewhat but then just stops before being completely invisible. Then the other StackPanel appears as usual. The only thing that changed was adding the reflection, which is just a VisualBrush. Below is the code. } } } } UPDATE: I have been testing this some more to try to find out what is causing the issue I am seeing and I believe I found what is causing the issue. Below I have pasted new xaml and code-behind. The new sample below is very similar to the original sample, with a few minor modifications. The xaml basically consists of two stack panels, each containing two borders. The second border in each stack panel is a visual brush (a reflection of the border above it). Now, when I click the "Flip" button, one stack panel gets its ScaleX reduced to zero, while the second stack panel, whose initial ScaleX is zero, gets its ScaleX increased to 1. This animation gives the illusion of flipping. There are also two textblocks which display the scale factor of each stack panel. I added those to try to diagnose my issue. The issue is (as described in the oringal post) that the flipping animation is not smooth. Every time I hit the flip button, the animation starts but whenever the ScaleX factor gets to around .14 to .16, the animation looks like it stalls and the stack panels never have there ScaleX reduced to zero, so they never totally disappear. Now, the strange thing is that if I change the Width/Height properties of the "frontBorder" and "backBorder" borders defined below to use explict values instead of Auto, such as Width=105 and Height=75 (to match the button in the border) everything works fine. The animation stutters the first two or three times I run it but after that the flips are smooth and flawless. (BTW, when an animation is run for the first time, is there something going on in the background, some sort of initialization, that causes it to be a little slow the first time?) Is it possible that the Auto Width/Height of the borders are causing the issue? I can reproduce it everytime but I am not sure why Auto Width/Height would be a problem. Below is the sample. • MSBuild (.NET 4.0) access problems

  I'm using Cruise Control .NET as my build server (Windows 2008 Server). Yesterday I upgraded my ASP.NET MVC project from VS 2008/.NET 3.5 to VS 2010/.NET 4.0. The only change I made to my ccnet.config's MSBuild task was the location of MSBuild.exe. Ever since I made that change, the build has been broken with the error: MSB4019 - The imported project "C:\Program Files (x86)\MSBuild\Microsoft\VisualStudio\v10.0\WebApplications\Microsoft.WebApplication.targets" was not found. Confirm that the path in the declaration is correct, and that the file exists on disk. This file does, in fact, exist in the location specified (I solved a problem similar to this when setting up the build server for VS2008/.NET 3.5 by copying the files from my dev environment to my build environment). So I RDP'ed into the build machine and opened a command prompt, used MSBUILD to attempt to build my project. MSBUILD returns the error: MSB3021 - Unable to copy file "obj\debug....dll". Access to the path 'bin....dll' is denied. Since I'm running MSBUILD from the command prompt, logged in with an account that has administrative privileges, I'm assuming that MSBUILD is running with the same privileges that I have. Next, I tried to copy the file that MSBUILD was attempting to copy. In this case, I get the UAC dialog that makes me click the [Continue] button to complete the copy. I'd like to avoid installing Visual Studio 2010 on my build machine, can anyone suggest other fixes I might try?

• How can I get TFS2010 to run MSDEPLOY for me through MSBUILD?

  There is an excellent PDC talk available here which describes the new MSDEPLOY features in Visual Studio 2010 - as well as how to deploy an application within TFS. You can use MSBUILD within TFS2010 to call through to MSDEPLOY to deploy your package to IIS. This is done by means of parameters to MSBUILD. The talk explains some of the command line parameters such as : /p:DeployOnBuild /p:DeployTarget=MsDeployPublish /p:CreatePackageOnPublish=True /p:MSDeployPublishMethod=InProc /p:MSDeployServiceURL=localhost /p:DeployIISAppPath="Default Web Site" But where is the documentation for this - I can't find any? I've been spending all day trying to get this to work and can't quite get it right and keep ending up with various errors. If I run the package's cmd file it deploys perfectly. But I want to get the whole deployment running through msbuild using these arguments and not a separate call to msdeploy or running the package .cmd file. How can I do this? PS. Yes I do have the Web Deployment Agent Service running. I also have the management service running under IIS. I've tried using both. • Is it possible to export saved passwords from Toad

  I'm looking for a way to export saved usernames/passwords from Toad for Oracle (9.5.0.31). It doesn't have to be in a usable format for importing - even a plaintext format would be fine. I believe the passwords are stored encrypted in CONNECTIONPWDS.INI, but from what I've read, that file doesn't transfer from one machine to another. There doesn't seem to be anything in the Quest site or the Yahoo groups about this, other than "That's a very good suggestion...". Has anyone had any luck accomplishing this? Or am I stuck with having to dig up the passwords for each of my accounts? Thanks

  I'm trying to deploy a web application which uses F# 4.0 on Windows Server 2008. It works on my computer where VS2010 is installed but it doesn't work on the server. Everytime you open the page you'll get this error message: Could not load file or assembly 'FSharp.Core, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified. I've installed .NET 4 using the web platform installer. F# PowerPack is installed too. I found this page: http://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/details/507202/error-in-working-with-f It suggests you to reinstall F#, but the link to download F# seems to be broken. And it might not be the same problem I have. I've also tried to install Microsoft F# 2.0.0.0 since it's the only F# redistribution I could find. But it doesn't help at all. Has anyone get something like this to work? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

  I create some UIElements from code behind and was anticipating the garbage collection to clear up stuff. However, the objects are not free-ed at the time I expected it. I was expecting them to be freeed at RemoveAt(0), but they are only freed at the end of the program. • logparser not matching on a LIKE pattern

  Hi I seem to have the strangest problem. I am using logparser to search an event log for some text that I know is there (i copied and pasted the string from the event into the sql search string). But the sql LIKE statement is returning a empty results. But other LIKE statments seem to be working file. • VSTS 2010 SGEN : error : Could not load file or assembly (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131515)

  Hi ! I am experiencing a strange issue with VS2010. We use TFS to build our API dlls and we used to reference them in our projects usign a mapped network drive that was fully trusted. We have been working like that for at least two years and everything worked perfectly. Today, I converted a webapp to vs2010 and when I compile it in Release, it's giving me: SGEN : error : Could not load file or assembly 'file:///L:\Api\Release API_20100521.1\Release\CS.API.Exceptions.dll' or one of its dependencies. Operation is not supported. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131515) The strange thing is that it's working when it's under the Debug profile... I tried adding the <runtime> <loadFromRemoteSources enabled="true" /> </runtime> into app.config and still no luck (See http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en/msbuild/thread/d12f6301-85bf-4b9e-8e34-a06398a60df0 and http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd409252(VS.100).aspx) I am pretty sure that this issue is from visual studio or msbuild, as our code won't run from a network share when in prod because all the referenced dll's are copied into the bin folder.   Amadeous produces AIR file like below for every flyight reservation. I need to read reservation number and source and destionation airports from this file. I searched goog for "amadeous air format" but havent found format description. Wikipedia entry about EDIFACt is a bit different, it does not describe this content. Where to fnd information about the file structure ? How to parse this file ? I have not idea about the file stucture, does it contain records like sql table or is it some reservation protocol instructions like postscript file ? Application should work in Microsoft Windows and preferably in Visual FoxPro or C# language. FoxPro or Microsoft Visual Studio 2012 Express can used as programming environment Google returns only Amadeus users guides and tutorials like in comment and in http://www.amadeusschweiz.com/en/documentation/usermanuals.html Those are user manuals. Most promising looks Amadeus Air user guide from this: File which I received name was air.txt and first token in file is AIR-BLK206 Maybe BLK206 is some booking format descriptor. Google returns some documens like my using this so it looks like it is commonly used. This file probably describes how to reserve ticket, which produces air.txt file. I seacrched this and ticket user guide for BLK but those do not contains this abbreviation. Commands in user manual look different than those from this file. How to use this information to extract reservation number and destination airport from this file ? I havent found format description using google. There are amadeus user guides, tutorials ja quick reference files similar which you posted but I do'nt understand how to use them to parse this file. One message describes that this is form of EDIFACT. However EDIFACT message sample in Wikipedia is also diffrerent. I need to create quick prototype to customer which shows that we vcan read those files. Maybe there are some programs which can used to display it in human readable form ?

• LinkBuilder.BuildUrlFromExpression not working anymore in .Net 4 / VS 2010 ?

  Hi, I recently migrating my ASP.Net MVC 1 application from VS.Net 2008 / C# 3.5 to VS.NET 2010 / C# 4.0. I massively used a builder to get URL strings from the strongly typed calls. It looks like this : // sample call : string toSamplePage = Url.To<SampleController>(c => c.Page(parameter1, parameter2)); the code is added as an extension to the default UrlHelper : public static string To<Tcontroller>(UrlHelper helper, Expression<Action<Tcontroller>> action) where Tcontroller : Controller { // based on Microsoft.Web.Mvc.dll LinkBuilder return LinkBuilder.BuildUrlFromExpression<Tcontroller>(helper.RequestContext, helper.RouteCollection, action); } The only problem of this, is the reference to Microsoft.Web.Mvc dll, but the gain in readability was worth it. Problem : it does not work anymore, return (null) whatever the parameters. Questions : is there a better way now to build links from an expression ? (yes I tried to google it without success) is there a trick to have the former LinkBuilder.BuildUrlFromExpression works ? I tried to recompile it into C# 4.0, but the problem is that it implies working on my own compilated version of System.Web.Mvc which is not an option. I'm currently trying to migrate to MVC 2 but I still have issues... Waiting for your suggestions...

• LoaderLock was detected, and turning off the warning does not help

  I am trying to write an application that takes in sound from the default audio recording device on a computer. When running any code that accesses DirectX from my managed code i get this error: DLL 'C:\Windows\assembly\GAC\Microsoft.DirectX.DirectSound\1.0.2902.0__31bf3856ad364e35\Microsoft.DirectX.DirectSound.dll' is attempting managed execution inside OS Loader lock. Do not attempt to run managed code inside a DllMain or image initialization function since doing so can cause the application to hang. DevicesCollection coll = new DevicesCollection(); and Device d = new Device(DSoundHelper.DefaultCaptureDevice); and Capture c = new Capture(DSoundHelper.DefaultCaptureDevice); all cause the LoaderLock MDA to pop up and tell me there is a problem. I have scoured the internet (stackoverflow included) for solutions to this problem, but most people just say to turn off the warning, which does not work. When I turn off the warning, a generic ApplicationException is thrown, which is even less useful. I have seen the answers to this question as well, which didn't help because he said to remove the code that is causing the error. Others have said "fix your code." My questions are: how can I call any (preferably managed) DirectX code from C# without getting this error?
