• First Experience with Web Services

  When I first started programming with Microsoft .Net (1.0 Framework) I had a strong desire to learn how search engines indexed web sites. At that time I was a working as a search engine spammer creating web pages to generate traffic for specific themes for various clients. One way I attempted to better understand .Net was to build a web spider that analyzed web pages on demand. An example of the spider is hosted at AddLinkz.com. After my spider was built I had no real idea what I could/should do with it until I found the MSN Search API. I used this web service to compare its results with my spider. Additionally, I used the API to feed my .Net web spider new URLs from the API based on specific search terms. MSN’s search API was very easy to use, I just had to request information by calling a web URL with parameters via a Get request and the results were returned in XML. At that time all requests were limited to XML responses and a maximum of 1,000 results per query.   Since then the entire API has gone through several reconstructions, rebranding and new search services.  Microsoft’s new Bing API replaced the older MSN search API and added several new search capabilities. These new features allow search data to be returned for web searches, image searches, new searches, and related search terms to name a few. • Discs in DVD Drive not being read

  Does anyone have an experience with Ubuntu that is no longer reading discs in the DVD drive? This is my first time Ubuntu does not see the disc :| The disc is fine and works on my other Ubuntu computers. The drive is there and powered. I can even type in eject in a terminal and the drive will open. Using the command: sudo lshw -C disk I am able to see info about my drive too. Actually BOTH of my internal DVD drives cannot read discs anymore. • Howto configure openSuSE firewall to route local traffic to local ports

  I have openSUSE 11.3 installed. I'm using the openSUSE firewall configuration mechanism (/etc/sysconfig/SuSEfirewall2). I have a http server application running on port 8080. I want the http service to be accessible using port 80. I created a redirect rule usign: FW_REDIRECT="0/0,0/0,tcp,80,8080" This works fine for every request coming from external. But it doesn't for local requests. (example: wget http://myserver/) Is there a way how I can tell the firewall to redirect local requests addressed for 80 to port 8080? (using the SUSE firewall configuration file)

  Looking in Web Analytics I could see several external sites pointing at an old .htm file on my web server that no longer existed, so I thought I would get IIS to redirect to the new .aspx replacement. How hard could it be? This has annoyed me for quite a while today so here is the answer. 1. Install the Http Redirection module - this is not installed by default!! Windows 7 Start->Control Panel->Programs and Features->Turn Windows Features on or off. Internet Information Services->World Wide Web Services->Common Http Features->HTTP Redirection.   I know this questions has been beat to death, but I've read almost all the responses and it hasn't solved my issue. I installed APC (no noted errors), I told PHP.ini to enable it and I made sure I am running PHP in FastCGI with SuExec turned off. Still I have no go. • Chassis fans and power LEDs still work in Hibernate

  I have ASRock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3 motherboard recently updated to 2.20 BIOS version. OS is Windows 7 x64. The problem is after that update full hibernation (by that i mean full system power off) stopped working although everything was fine before. Now when I press hibernate, sleep in initiated as usual, monitor goes to sleep, HDD and CPU fan stop spinning, but chassis fans (i have Gigabyte Aurora 3D 570 case with two rear and one front fans) still remain working. Also power leds are lit as if computer is turned on. Tried changing different UEFI settings related to sleep mode, and none of them change above described behaviour. I have "Deep Sleep" (Advanced-South Bridge Configuration) set to "Enabled in S4-S5", "Suspend to RAM" (Advanced-ACPI Configuration) set to "Auto", all fans settings in "H/W Monitor" set to "Auto".

• How do I access an Ubuntu VirtualBox guest at a static IP from an OS X host?

  How does one configure an Ubuntu guest to use a static IP that's visible to an OS X host, and ensure that the static IP is independent of the host's network configuration? I previously used bridged networking for my guest, but I'm constantly moving my host between networks so the guest IP is always different. First, I tried setting the guest network configuration to NAT and forwarding host port 1022 to guest port 22, so I could at least ssh to a fixed address (localhost:1022): $ VBoxManage setextradata "Ubuntu Server" "VBoxInternal/Devices/e1000/0/LUN#0/Config/SSH/Protocol" "TCP" $ VBoxManage setextradata "Ubuntu Server" "VBoxInternal/Devices/e1000/0/LUN#0/Config/SSH/GuestPort" 22 $ VBoxManage setextradata "Ubuntu Server" "VBoxInternal/Devices/e1000/0/LUN#0/Config/SSH/HostPort" 1022 Then, $ ssh localhost -p 1022 ssh: connect to host localhost port 1022: Connection refused But this didn't work (guest has no network access with NAT and OS X refused the connection, as you can see). • How to prevent mod_cluster as single point failure?

  In my configuration i used Apche+mod_cluster as a front_end(load balancer) server and two JBOSS AS 7.1.0 as backend server. In my configuration on one system i have install Apache+mod_cluster + JBOSS AS 7.1.0 and on other system JBOSS AS 7.1.0. Both JBOSS AS 7.1.0 are in domain mode means in clustering. My problem is that if Apche+mod_cluster crash than client can not access any JBOSS AS . I want to configure Apache+mod_cluster in Master_Slave format, means if one of Apache+mod_cluter down another Apache+mod_cluster become active and pass client(browser) request to back-end server in normal form without any interruption. Is there any way to make two Apache+mod_cluster to communicate with each other , means to check health status of each other and if any one get down other Apche+mod_cluster will do it's task ......

• Allow from referer for HTTP-basic protected SSL apache site

  I have an apache site protected by HTTP basic authentication. The authentication is working fine. Now I would like to bypass authentication for users that are coming from a particular website by relying on the HTTP Referer header. Here is the configuration: SetEnvIf Referer "^http://.*.example\.org" coming_from_example_org <Directory /var/www/> Options Indexes FollowSymLinks MultiViews AllowOverride None Deny from all Allow from env=coming_from_example_org AuthName "login required" AuthUserFile /opt/http_basic_usernames_and_passwords AuthType Basic Require valid-user Satisfy Any </Directory> This is working fine for HTTP, but failing for HTTPS. My understanding is that in order to inspect the HTTP headers, the SSL handshake must be completed, but apache wants to inspect the <Directory> directives before doing the SSL handshake, even if I place them at the bottom of the configuration file. Q: How could I workaround this issue? PS: I'm not obsessed with the HTTP referer header, I could use other options that would allow users from a known website to bypass authantication.

I mean, different packages use total different naming specification. Here are the major questions: Why there are ubuntu in them, and there are not? what all the special -~+ mean? alpha and build, dfsg, what are they? Can I just use them casually? vim and other packages have 2:, what does that mean? How version comparison works, since they can be so different? Can anyone please explain this to me? • Automated backups for Windows Azure SQL Database

  One of the questions that I've often been asked is about how you can backup databases in Windows Azure SQL Database. What we have had access to was the ability to export a database to a BACPAC. A BACPAC is basically just a zip file that contains a bunch of metadata along with a set of bcp files for each of the tables in the database. Each table in the database is exported one after the other, so this does not produce a transactionally-consistent backup at a specific point in time. To get a transactionally-consistent copy, you need a database that isn't in use.The easiest way to get a database that isn't in use is to use CREATE DATABASE AS COPY OF. This creates a new database as a transactionally-consistent copy of the database that you are copying. You can then use the export options to get a consistent BACPAC created.Previously, I've had to automate this process by myself. Given there was also no SQL Agent in Azure, I used a job in my on-premises SQL Server to do this, using a linked server configuration.Now there's a much simpler way. Windows Azure SQL Database now supports an automated export function. On the Configuration tab for the database, you need to enable the Automated Export function. You can configure how often the operation is performed for you, and which storage account will be used for the backups.It's important to consider the cost impacts of this as well. You are charged for how ever many databases are on your server on a given day. So if you enable a daily backup, you will double your database costs. Do not schedule the backups just before midnight UTC, as that could cause you to have three databases each day instead of one.This is a much needed addition to the capabilities. In addition to the Web and Business editions, there will now be a Premium edition that has reserved (rather than shared) resources. • Need help connecting to SRW2024 Linksys Switch from CentOS 5.4

  I am configured a Linksys SRW2024, I accidently changed the management VLAN before changing the VLAN configuration thus I can no longer access it with the net. The only way I have read to get into it now is via a console cable, my laptop with me is a MacBook Pro with no Serial port connection, apart from driving around a town that I am unfamilar with to find an adapter I thought I would try on a Linux box. I have a CentOS 5.4 server here (PowerEdge R300) that I am trying to use to talk to the switch. I tried minicom first but I do not see the console. Another site suggested the screen command. I tried "screen /dev/ttyS0 38400" but all I get is blinking curser, I do not see the configuration. I don't know if anyone here as any tips but I hope someone does. Thank You,

• A "region code" restriction for a custom created video dvd file

  I want to create a video dvd ( no menus, just "plug and play" ) from a few video files. I`m doing it like this: ffmpeg -i sample-media/hellboy-2.wmv -y -target ntsc-dvd sample-media-to-mpeg/hellboy-2.vob dvdauthor -o sample-dvd -x dvdauthor-settings.xml mkisofs -dvd-video -o hellboy-2-trailers.iso sample-dvd/ where "dvdauthor-settings.xml" is: link. But when I try to play the iso file in windows it says: Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD because the disc prohibits playback in your region of the world. You must obtain a disc that is intended for your geographic region. When I open the *.IFO file with IfoEdit it says that all world regions are unabled. Can someone tell me why is this happening? ( maybe the whole process of creating the *.iso file is wrong? )

• Nginx Proxying to Multiple IP Addresses for CMS' Website Preview

  First-time poster, so bear with me. I'm relatively new to Nginx, but have managed to figure out what I've needed... until now. Nginx v1.0.15 is proxying to PHP-FPM v.5.3.10, which is listening at http://127.0.0.1:9000. [Knock on wood] everything has been running smoothly in terms of hosting our CMS and many websites. Now, we've developed our CMS and configured Nginx such that each supported website has a preview URL (e.g. http://[WebsiteID].ourcms.com/) where the site can be, you guessed it, previewed in those situations where DNS doesn't yet resolve to our server, etc. Specifically, we use Nginx's Map module (http://wiki.nginx.org/HttpMapModule) and a regular expression in the server_name of the CMS' server{ } block to 1) lookup a website's primary domain name from its preview URL and then 2) forward the request to the "matched" primary domain. The corresponding Nginx configuration: map $host $h { 123.ourcms.com www.example1.com; 456.ourcms.com www.example2.com; 789.ourcms.com www.example3.com; } and server { listen [OurCMSIPAddress]:80; listen [OurCMSIPAddress]:443 ssl; root /var/www/ourcms.com; server_name ~^(.*)\.ourcms\.com$; ssl_certificate /etc/nginx/conf.d/ourcms.com.chained.crt; ssl_certificate_key /etc/nginx/conf.d/ourcms.com.key; location / { proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1/; proxy_set_header Host $h; proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-For $proxy_add_x_forwarded_for; } } (Note: I do realize that the regex in the server_name should be "tighter" for security reasons and match only the format of the website ID (i.e. a UUID in our case).) This configuration works for 99% of our sites... except those that have a dedicated IP address for an installed SSL certificate. A "502 Bad Gateway" is returned for these and I'm unsure as to why. This is how I think the current configuration works for any requests that match the regex (e.g. http://123.ourcms.com/): Nginx looks up the website's primary domain from the mapping, and as a result of the proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1 directive, passes the request back to Nginx itself, which since the proxied request has a hostname corresponding to the website's primary domain name, via the proxy_set_header Host $h directive, Nginx handles the request as if it was as direct request for that hostname. Please correct me if I'm wrong in this understanding. Should I be proxying to those website's dedicated IP addresses? I tried this, but it didn't seem to work? Is there a setting in the Proxy module that I'm missing? Thanks for the help. MB

  I got a 32-bit Debian VPS from http://linode.com and I really haven't done any sort of advanced configuration for securing it ( port 22; password enabled ). It seems somehow there is ssh scanning going on from my IP, I'm being flagged as this is against the TOS. I've been SSHing only from my home Comcast ISP which I run Linux on. Is this a common thing when getting a new vps? Are there any standard security configuration tips? I'm quite confused as to how my machine has been accused of this ssh scanning.

• Trouble migrating Joomla from Linux to Windows server

  I'm having some trouble migrating a Joomla website from a Linux server to a Windows server. The database came over fine, Besides that, all I've done is download all the files from the current site, and change configuration.php so the log and tmp directories show "./tmp/" and "./logs/" I keep having an error in the PHP log stating PHP Fatal error: Class 'JTable' not found I've downloaded the site multiple times now, and I'm convinced this is a configuration problem, and not a missing file problem. I've even tried installing a mod for backup on the linux box to try and migrate the site, but sadly the mod had problems installing. The new server is running IIS 7.5 on Windows Web Server. • phpredis + pconnect

  I am using phpredis on my php based website. The webserver I am using is a the simplest apache apt-get installation, no configuration involved, as this is only a development environment. The issue I am facing is that basically, while using phpredis, there is no difference between "connect" and "pconnect" commands: they both create a new connection everytime, as I can see from the "info" command on redis-cli. Now, I am pretty sure it is because of the apache configuration and the fact that it probably (most likely) is a multi-threaded env, therefore can't enstablish a single connection. My question is basically for when I will turn into production: what would the best choice of a webserver be to avoid this problem? I remember using lighttpd with thousands of users and still get only a very few (like 2 or 3) connections on mongoDB. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

• How to deal with a CEO making all technical decision but with little technical knowledge ?

  Hi, Question posted anonymously for obvious reasons. I am working in a company with a dev group of 5-6 developers, and I am in a situation which I have a hard time dealing with. Every technical choice (language, framework, database, database scheme, configuration scheme, etc...) is decided by the CEO, often without much rationale. It is very hard to modify those choices, and his main argument consists in "I don't like this", even though we propose several alternative with detailed pros/cons. He will also decide to rewrite from scratch our core product without giving a reason why, and he never participates to dev meetings because he considers it makes things slower... I am already looking at alternative job opportunities, but I was wondering if there anything we (the developers) could do to improve the situation. Two examples which shocked me: he will ask us to implement something akin to configuration management, but he reject any existing framework because they are not written in the language he likes (even though the implementation language is irrelevant). He also expects us to be able to write those systems in a couple of days, "because it is very simple". he keeps rewriting from scratch on his own our core product because the current codebase is too bad (codebase whose design was his). We are at our third rewrite in one year, each rewrite worse than the previous one. Things I have tried so far is doing elaborate benchmarks on our product (he keeps complaining that our software is too slow, and justifies rewrites to make it faster), implement solutions with existing products as working proof instead of just making pros/cons charts, etc... But still 90 % of those efforts go to the trashbox (never with any kind of rationale behind he does not like it, again), and often get reprimanded because I don't do exactly as he wants (not realizing that what he wants is impossible).

  What is a reasonable goal in terms of traffic for my Flex 3 site: www.brainpinata.com Since I began a couple of months ago, I've gotten roughly 5500 ad views and 280 ad clicks. And the ad revenue is a whopping $4.80. (I don't use Google Adsense). I advertise my site using Google Adwords to try to build traffic. My budget is $10/day. What should I do? a) Push the marketing. Add a blog. Try to get backlinks, contact blogs, start a Facebook page, tweet, etc. b) Google is only indexing the static content in the SWF. The questions/answers are pulled from a mySQL database. So, Google doesn't index 99% of the content. Should I re-do the site in HTML/Javascript and hard-code the questions for each puzzle? (This would be a challenge as I don't know javascript worth squat.) Or should I hard-code the questions in XML and put them in the Flex app? If I put the questions in an XML file it's roughly 500 KB. Other ideas? c) Should I switch ad networks? (I currently get about 100 visitors a day). My ad network pays so little that if I were to make even $500/month, I would need 550,000 ad views/month, which seems impossible. If I go ahead and switch ad networks, I need to find one that allows iFrames as I've got a Flex website. Which ad networks permit their ads to be shown in iFrames? d) Should I cut and run?
