• Exitus Acta Probat: The Post-Processing Module

  Sometimes, one has to make certain ethical compromises to ensure the success of a corporate IT project. Exitus Acta Probat (literally 'the result validates the deeds' meaning that the ends justify the means)It was a while back, whilst working as a Technical Architect for a well-known international company, that I was given the task of designing the architecture of a rather specialized accounting system. We'd tried an off-the-shelf (OTS) Windows-based solution which crashed with dispiriting regularity, and didn't quite do what the business required. After a great deal of research and planning, we commissioned a Unux-based system that used X-terminals for the desktops of  the participating staff. X terminals are now obsolete, but were then hot stuff; stripped-down Unix workstations that provided client GUIs for networked applications long before the days of AJAX, Flash, Air and DHTML. I've never known a project go so smoothly: I'd been initially rather nervous about going the Unix route, believing then that  Unix programmers were excitable creatures who were prone to  indulge in role-play enactments of elves and wizards at the weekend, but the programmers I met from the company that did the work seemed to be rather donnish, earnest, people who quickly grasped our requirements and were faultlessly professional in their work.After thinking lofty thoughts for a while, there was considerable pummeling of keyboards by our suppliers, and a beautiful robust application was delivered to us ahead of dates.Soon, the department who had commissioned the work received shiny new X Terminals to replace their rather depressing lavatory-beige PCs. I modestly hung around as the application was commissioned and deployed to the department in order to receive the plaudits. They didn't come. Something was very wrong with the project. I couldn't put my finger on the problem, and the users weren't doing any more than desperately and futilely searching the application to find a fault with it.Many times in my life, I've come up against a predicament like this: The roll-out of an application goes wrong and you are hearing nothing that helps you to discern the cause but nit-*** noise. There is a limit to the emotional heat you can pack into a complaint about text being in the wrong font, or an input form being slightly cramped, but they tried their best. The answer is, of course, one that every IT executive should have tattooed prominently where they can read it in emergencies: In Vino Veritas (literally, 'in wine the truth', alcohol loosens the tongue. A roman proverb) It was time to slap the wallet and get the department down the pub with the tab in my name. It was an eye-watering investment, but hedged with an over-confident IT director who relished my discomfort. To cut a long story short, The real reason gushed out with the third round. We had deprived them of their PCs, which had been good for very little from the pure business perspective, but had provided them with many hours of happiness playing computer-based minesweeper and solitaire. There is no more agreeable way of passing away the interminable hours of wage-slavery than minesweeper or solitaire, and the employees had applauded the munificence of their employer who had provided them with the means to play it. I had, unthinkingly, deprived them of it.I held an emergency meeting with our suppliers the following day. I came over big with the notion that it was in their interests to provide a solution. They played it cool, probably knowing that it was my head on the block, not theirs. In the end, they came up with a compromise. they would temporarily descend from their lofty, cerebral stamping grounds  in order to write a server-based Minesweeper and Solitaire game for X Terminals, and install it in a concealed place within the system. We'd have to pay for it, though. I groaned. How could we do that? "Could we call it a 'post-processing module?" suggested their account executive.And so it came to pass. The application was a resounding success. Every now and then, the staff were able to indulge in some 'post-processing', with what turned out to be a very fine implementation of both minesweeper and solitaire. There were several refinements: A single click in a 'boss' button turned the games into what looked just like a financial spreadsheet.  They even threw in a multi-user version of Battleships. The extra payment for the post-processing module went through the change-control process without anyone untoward noticing, and peace once more descended. Only one thing niggles. Those games were good. Do they still survive, somewhere in a Linux library? If so, I'd like to claim a small part in their production.

• Please Help with ATI Radeon 4250 and Xinerama

  I am using ubuntu 11.10 fresh install and I am having problems making the second screen to work, I remember before I was able to do it by extending the desktop to a larger number like 3840 X 1080 but since I am new I completely forgot how to do it, Now I have a philips 230 E monitor full 1920 X 1080 and a Toshiba tv HDMI and I want to activate the second monitor to be able to use Xinerama but I don't know how to go about this, I want to keep the Phillips as a primary monitor since it's the smaller one and use the TV from time to time to play videos movies and presentations. I installed all the additional drivers and don't know what else to do. I would prefer if I can use a list of exact commands to copy and paste onto the terminal since that is all I know how to use LOL . Thank you so much for your help. • dual-boot (win-xp/ubu12.04) graphics card for ubu-desktop/win-xp-games

  for work I need to get a a new and cheap graphics card for a dual boot machine: windows xp/ubuntu 12.04 LTS. The only requirements I have are: it should work 'flawlessly' in ubuntu (proprietary drivers are ok) it should handle Guild Wars 2 & League of Legends in windows xp (this is really the top priority as we need to be able to play at work :) - yes I have a cool job) I know nothing about graphics cards (and it seems to be a jungle out there). From other questions here and some webstigation I think I'd like to go for a Nvidia card, I've been trying to figure out what models fit the system req's but it seems they use different kind of model numbers so I don't get any wiser. tl;dr: will http://www.geforce.co.uk/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gt-620-oem/specifications run Guild Wars 2 http://gamesystemrequirements.com/games.php?id=938 Or what is the worst card from nVidia that will run GW2 smoothly and work well in Ubuntu 12.04 Thanks!

  I was wanting to play around with something in a VM the other day.  I was curious what was available for free, if anything, for windows.   I quickly came across Virtual Box  ( http://www.virtualbox.org/ ).   Downloaded, Installed. No Problem!  Works really nicely.   It was commercial software (by sun (now oracle)) that turned open source.   In terms of a license it says :- In summary, the VirtualBox PUEL allows you to use VirtualBox free of charge for personal use or, alternatively, for product evaluation. An interesting feature it has is built in RDP.   Which is useful if you have a guest OS that doesn’t support RDP.   Speaking of RDP…..  which I will in my next blog post… I learnt something REALLY useful the other day.

• How can I embed an existing podcast into my website?

  I manage a podcast and a website, currently they are separate but I would like to have a way to embed the podcast into the website, I still want to create/update the podcast separate from the website I just want visitors to be able to listen to the podcast on the website without having to open iTunes while still having the ability to choose what episode to play. The best solution I have found is: http://tools.wizzard.tv/ but I do not like it that much. Currently I have to log on and click refresh for it to recognize new episodes. I want to be able to update the podcast, and just like how iTunes will be updated I want the page on the website to be updated as well. The 'podcast' page will most likely not be like a blog but have a Flash or Java script application that will pull the info from the podcast.xml file to show the episodes.

• Flash 10.2 RC + Crystal HD for HW accelerated video on Ubuntu

  I have a netbook with a N450 Atom and a BCM70012 aka Crystal HD card. On Windows 7 I can play HD flash video with very little CPU usage because of the RC of Flash 10.2. I did some reading and saw posts claiming that the Crystal HD card is finally supported by the newer Flash 10.2 RC in Ubuntu but I can't get it to work. I can confirm that flash 10.2 is loaded and used, and there's even a HW acceleration option that is enabled in the settings but performance is horrible. From what I read, the Crystal HD card is supposed to be enabled on 10.10 by default - I don't know if it is. I tried installing drivers for it in various ways but HD flash video is still a slideshow So does anyone have it working? If so, how'd you set it up?

• How to install Diablo 2 Lord of Destruction?

  I first tried to install Diablo 2 LOD from an iso image using acetone iso. However, after acetone iso mounted the image, it said "Please install the labelled disc". I then tried with Gmount, and, following advice I received from some forums, I attempted to create mount points and then install; after it mounted the image, it installed the first three disc images but not the expansion. When I tried to play, it told me to insert the labelled disc, even though the iso image was still mounted with Gmount. How can I resolve this problem?

• How to Force Graphics Options in PC Games with NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel Graphics

  PC games usually have built-in graphics options you can change. But you’re not limited to the options built into games — the graphics control panels bundled with graphics drivers allow you to tweak options from outside PC games. For example, these tools allow you to force-enabling antialiasing to make old games look better, even if they don’t normally support it. You can also reduce graphics quality to get more performance on slow hardware. If You Don’t See These Options If you don’t have the NVIDIA Control Panel, AMD Catalyst Control Center, or Intel Graphics and Media Control Panel installed, you may need to install the appropriate graphics driver package for your hardware from the hardware manufacturer’s website. The drivers provided via Windows Update don’t include additional software like the NVIDIA Control Panel or AMD Catalyst Control Center. Drivers provided via Windows Update are also more out of date. If you’re playing PC games, you’ll want to have the latest graphics drivers installed on your system. NVIDIA Control Panel The NVIDIA Control Panel allows you to change these options if your computer has NVIDIA graphics hardware. To launch it, right-click your desktop background and select NVIDIA Control Panel. You can also find this tool by performing a Start menu (or Start screen) search for NVIDIA Control Panel or by right-clicking the NVIDIA icon in your system tray and selecting Open NVIDIA Control Panel. To quickly set a system-wide preference, you could use the Adjust image settings with preview option. For example, if you have old hardware that struggles to play the games you want to play, you may want to select “Use my preference emphasizing” and move the slider all the way to “Performance.” This trades graphics quality for an increased frame rate. By default, the “Use the advanced 3D image settings” option is selected. You can select Manage 3D settings and change advanced settings for all programs on your computer or just for specific games. NVIDIA keeps a database of the optimal settings for various games, but you’re free to tweak individual settings here. Just mouse-over an option for an explanation of what it does. If you have a laptop with NVIDIA Optimus technology — that is, both NVIDIA and Intel graphics — this is the same place you can choose which applications will use the NVIDIA hardware and which will use the Intel hardware. AMD Catalyst Control Center AMD’s Catalyst Control Center allows you to change these options on AMD graphics hardware. To open it, right-click your desktop background and select Catalyst Control Center. You can also right-click the Catalyst icon in your system tray and select Catalyst Control Center or perform a Start menu (or Start screen) search for Catalyst Control Center. Click the Gaming category at the left side of the Catalyst Control Center window and select 3D Application Settings to access the graphics settings you can change. The System Settings tab allows you to configure these options globally, for all games. Mouse over any option to see an explanation of what it does. You can also set per-application 3D settings and tweak your settings on a per-game basis. Click the Add option and browse to a game’s .exe file to change its options. Intel Graphics and Media Control Panel Intel integrated graphics is nowhere near as powerful as dedicated graphics hardware from NVIDIA and AMD, but it’s improving and comes included with most computers. Intel doesn’t provide anywhere near as many options in its graphics control panel, but you can still tweak some common settings. To open the Intel graphics control panel, locate the Intel graphics icon in your system tray, right-click it, and select Graphics Properties. You can also right-click the desktop and select Graphics Properties. Select either Basic Mode or Advanced Mode. When the Intel Graphics and Media Control Panel appears, select the 3D option. You’ll be able to set your Performance or Quality setting by moving the slider around or click the Custom Settings check box and customize your Anisotropic Filtering and Vertical Sync preference. Different Intel graphics hardware may have different options here. We also wouldn’t be surprised to see more advanced options appear in the future if Intel is serious about competing in the PC graphics market, as they say they are. These options are primarily useful to PC gamers, so don’t worry about them — or bother downloading updated graphics drivers — if you’re not a PC gamer and don’t use any intensive 3D applications on your computer. • Donald Ferguson says end-user programming is next big thing. Is it?

  You can guess how I came to ask this question... Anyway : http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-11944966 Donald Ferguson claiming that his websphere was his biggest disaster and proclaiming that end-user programming will be the way forward. This genuinely spurs the question : what with current programming languages. Honestly, I don't think that end-user programming will go much beyond a rather rigid template where you can build some apps around. If you see how many people actually manage to understand the basic functionality of functions in EXCEL... Plus, I fail to see how complex and performant systems can be built in such an end-user programming language ( Visual Basic, anyone?) Nice to play around with, but for many applications they're just not the thing. So no worries for the old languages if you ask me. What's your ideas?

• Fullscreen Still Has Taskbars at Top and Bottom

  I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 and running the Gnome Classic desktop. Whenever I go fullscreen, the taskbars at the top and bottom which hold the menus, notifications, etc. are still visible. This only happens when I'm in a browser or trying to play a game. I've tried it in both Firefox and Chromium, and get the same result no matter which one I use. Videos I watch using VLC however do not have the bars at the top and bottom. I found only one post about this in the questions, but there were no answers that worked for me. I wasn't sure if commenting my problem into the 5 month old post would move it to the top where it could be seen, so I made this one.

• mp3 codecs cannot be installed no software is actually installing

  My Rythm box player cannot play mp3 and iget this error "GStreamer extra plugins cannot be installed on your computer type (i386) Either the application requires special hardware features or the vendor decided to not support your computer type" if i go to software center i get this error The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct. in shot i have tried to dowload deb softs i still get the error above .so i have downloaded tar.gz and i have installed using terminal but i get another error of gcc c++ insanity check failure! i ask my self what i am supposed to do nothing is working nothing at all yet i have to run my bussiness help urgently before i collapse and choose to die!

• Intel HD graphic drivers for ubuntu 10.10 64bit: the brightness says its being adjusted but it isn't

  Hey all, I picked up an hp dm3t laptop with intel HD graphics and installed ubuntu 10.10 64 bit on it. It works great -- the only problem is that the brightness controls on the keyboard don't work. The brightness is always at full. When I try to adjust it down, the indicator graphic indicates that it's going down but the actual brightness doesn't change. Is there anything that I can try to make this work? I'd really appreciate any help. I asked this on superuser.com and someone commented that I should play around with the intel hd drivers. I'm a total noob -- how do I do that? What else can I try? I reallly don't want to do back to windows.

• Minecraft flickers sometimes and colors get buggy on an Intel HD Graphics 3000

  I really like Ubuntu, but I always had to switch back to Windows just because I couldn't get my Intel HD Graphics 3000 to work. So, 11.10 came out and I'm trying to get things work in this update, so I can finally stay with Ubuntu and use it. Anyways, things seem to be more stable here, but they're still a bit fishy. I'm doing tests with Minecraft. Currently, there's only 1 minor bug. The game flickers from time to time and the colors get buggy or something I read that maybe I should update to kernel 3.1? Maybe 32-bit Ubuntu is better? It was impossible to play Minecraft in 11.04, but 11.10 is so much more stable.

• Computer SOMETIMES recognizes when headphones are plugged in.

  Whenever I plug my headphones into my computer's front headphone jack, I get a weird situation. Sometimes, the computer will recognize the headphones and work properly. But other times, the computer will play sound through both the headphones and my monitor's speaker. When this happens, the sound section of the system settings does not list the headphones. I can fix the issue temporarily by wiggling the headphone port, but if it gets wiggled the wrong way again, then the issue returns. My PC's case is a Rosewill Challenger. I have tried multiple headphones and the same issue is there. I suspect that this might be a hardware related issue, but if there is any way to fix it with software, that would be helpful.
