  • How low-power can a home server get?

    I've got quite simple question actually. How green, low-power and efficient x86 home server can I build using consumer parts with rather constrained budget. After looking through some Google hits I've found out that system based on dual-core atom, some modest mITX board (gigabit lan, integrated audio and gfx etc), one RAM module and one 'green' WD HDD, powered by picoITX PSU uses about 30W at idle up to 40 at load. Can you get lower (or how much lower) then that? Maybe some VIA nano chips, or single core atom? My home server would take care of some back-upping mixed with little ftp/http traffic.

  • OS X 10.6 won't automatically connect to wireless even though remember network is checked

    Upgraded to 10.6 recently. 10.5 would connect to my home network whenever I was home. 10.6 constantly pops up the network selection dialog and asks me what network I want to join. I click my home network and the password is already entered (so it "remembers" the network). "Remember network" is checked... but it does it every time. How do I get 10.6 to connect to networks automatically whenever it sees them?

    I have a full system image using Acronis True Image Home 10 and want to run it as a virtual machine on Windows 7 Professional. I have created a virtual machine but Windows Virtual PC doesn't allow access to a USB external hard disk when booting from the Acronis Recovery CD. I've copied the backup onto the host machine and I can access it via the network using the Acronis boot CD but I'm wondering if there is an easier way? Does any other free Virtual Machine software support USB devices during boot (i.e. I can restore a backup image from the USB hard disk directly)

  • Thinkpad CPU temperature reaches 100°C after 10 minutes of heavy use

    Less than two years ago, I bought a Lenovo Thinkpad R500. When using the CPU heavily, it sometimes decides to reboot. I am using Linux, and a widget shows me the CPU temperature. The PC usually reboots when the temperature of the first core gets over 100°C Since I switched from Ubuntu 2010.10 32bit to Ubuntu 2011.04 64bit, it crashes much more often. I survive using these techniques: When in the office, I use a laptopcooler. When outside, I underclock to 800 MHz, by doing so it does not get too warm. QUESTION: Is it normal that a Thinkpad crashes if the CPU is at 100% for more than 10 minutes? How can I use the full power of my computer, for instance when showing CPU-hungry business intelligence tools to clients? The computer does not really feel that hot. Maybe the sensor itself is reporting wrong temperatures? Can I tell the BIOS to ignore it?

  • Fedora 13 post security update boot problem

    Hello. About a month ago I installed a security update that had new Kernek 2.6.34.x from 2.6.33.x), this is when the problem occurred for the first time. After the install my computer would not boot at all, black screen without any visible hard drive activity (I gave it good 30 minutes on black screen, before took actions)... I poped in installation DVD and went in rescue mode to change back the boot option to old kernel (was just a guess where the problem was). After restart computer loaded just file, took a long time for it to start because of SELinux targeted policy relabel is required. Relabeling could take very long time depending on file size. I assumed that the update got messed up somehow and continued working with modified boot option. Couple of days ago, there was another kernel update. I installed it and same problem as before. This rules out corrupted update theory... Black screen right after 'BIOS' screen before OS gets loaded. I had to rescue system again... Below is copy of my grub.conf file.     Hello The venerable EccoPro offered a great in-place outliner to organize tasks into sub-tasks, and add a Due Date to any item so that they would be also displayed in the Calendar (and in a Palm pilot if the used had one). It seems like Outlook only supports a single-level task list: Is there an add-on to Outlook to do this, or another application than Outlook provided it's also capable of syncing with a BlackBerry?     Hi, I am looking for a software that allows me to enter my used backup media (e.g. DVD1, DVD2) my backed-up assets in high-level (such as "family-photos from 2003", "laptop drivers") details of the assets ("Ninas Birthday 2003") where the backup media is currently stored when the media has been burned (to re-burn in case of media degeneration) Of course it should be possible to navigate from media to assets and backwards. I also thought about marking assets as "deprecated". If all assets on a media are deprecated, the program should tell me so I don't have to keep it any more. Does anybody know a program with this feature-set or will I have to start my own in say Access?

  • Why does my MacBook Pro trackpad sometimes set its tracking speed to slow, all by itself?

    Every now and then, the trackpad on my MacBook Pro will seem to set its own tracking speed to slow. I’ll notice that the cursor is moving slowly, and when I check in System Preferences, the tracking speed is indeed at slow, even though I never set it to slow myself. This might happen before/after switching into a VMWare virtual machine, but I’m not sure. It doesn’t seem to happen on startup or anything, just during use. Anyone else seen this?

  • Finder Using Nearly 100% CPU

    I'm having a problem where the Finder uses WAY too much CPU time. It's using up to 100% of one of my cores. I'm running 10.6.2 on a MacBook Pro w/ 6GB of RAM, plenty of fast (SSD) disk space. I also run DropBox and BackBlaze. I've tried disabling my third party stuff (DropBox and BackBlaze), but that doesn't seem to help. It's killing my battery life!

To detect biral infection it is desired that internet access is limited. Network access to the host is desired, but access to the internet should be limited to a select few sites. The added overhead of network access should be small when the guest vbox is running, 0 when it is not.

  • how to properly set environment variables

    I've recently started using Windows (having used Ubuntu up until now) and I find myself unable to properly set environment variables. Whenever I set them they don't seem to work. I've been going to Start-Edit Environment Variables for your Account and editing the PATH value in the upper half of the GUI. Here's what I've got so far. ;C:\Chocolatey\bin;C:\tools\mysql\current\bin;C:\Program Files (x86)\Git\bin;C:\Program Files\MySQL\MySQL Server 5.6\bin\;C:\Python33\Scripts; These are each the parent directories of the executables I'd like to be able to run by name from CMD, but mysql, git, and pip aren't being recognized. Am I doing something wrong syntactically or at a general understanding level? I'd like to be able to run these commands without having to specify the full path to the executables every time.     From this article I have learnt, that DWM is enabled only with AERO: Let’s recall: without Aero turned on, the DWM is deactivated, so there’s also no more 2D acceleration, either (this applies equally to Windows 7 as it does to Vista) What is the easiest way to tell whether AERO / DWM on Win 7 is enabled / disabled? With some themes it is (visually) obvious, but with some others not (especially not when using remote access like VNC). Is there some dialog where I can see that AERO / DWM is enabled / disabled?

    Hi folks, I have 2 windows machines and a server. 1 is my laptop, the other is a workstation that the IP of which is white-listed on the server. The laptop has a dynamic IP, so the IP cannot be white-listed. I would like to be able to perform FTP transfers from my laptop to the server, while using the workstation as a proxy.   • Linux Mplayer Instead of flash any distro/browser

    The thing is that flash sucks for linux on 64-bit, performance vice. Due to this I actually download every clip to a temp folder and play the file while it's being downloaded with mplayer. This works really nice. Flash is not to play a video. Does there exist a plugin for this for any browser? I tried google, but I can't find the right words to search for.

There are 4 partitions of my hard disk Windows OS Linux(Ubuntu OS) Data Now the problem part. The data partition is NTFS. I have mounted this partition on the location /media/windrive-a under ubuntu OS. A little while back i decided to delete the mounting of the data partition and i fired command rm -r /media/windrive-a/. To give me a shock; all my data on data drive is gone. Now, I know this is not the command to remove mounted partition. But I have committed the wrong. Is there any way i can get my data back. These are very important data for me. Please suggest.
