• Development environment for ASP.NET with EpiServer

  At our company we are going to develop more for the Windows platform than we have done up until now. As this scale of Windows development is new to us it would be nice with some feedback from experienced developers. Requirements we have: 5 developers from the beginning. 15 developers a year from now. All developers should be able to develop at the same time. Be able to develop solution for ASP.NET and EpiServer 5. Our idea: A shared server which developers use for development through Terminal Services. SQL Server Express. Start with some free express edition of Visual Studio, upgrade to a commercial version if we need the additional features. Use IIS and not the web server built into Visual Studio. Questions: Are we on the right track? In terms of license costs the above should be cheapest, right? What do you think about multiple developers doing development using a shared TS-server? Do you know of any company which has a similar development environment? Are we going to miss some features of the full Visual Studio version immediately? Is using Express version a bad choice? Is IIS the best choice? If use IIS the developers may use the same port for deployment. If we use the built in web server each one has to set their own port as we're sharing a machine. Comment answer: We are thinking about a shared server as it will most likely decrease the license costs. So it's purely a cost issue. We are using CVS for version control. Our situation is that we develop on Mac and Linux, that's why buying 1 server license + Visual Studio licenses seems to be a cost effective way of starting this type of development.

  Sorry for a badly-phrased question. I have a requirement coming from a non-technical person that I need to make sense of. I am basically told: "Here use 'Driver={SQL Server};Server=SERVERNAME\INSTANCENAME;Database=DATABASENAME;Uid=UNAME;Pwd=PASSWORD;'; and here use Server=SERVERNAME\INSTANCENAME;Database=DATABASENAME;Uid=UNAME;Pwd=PASSWORD;';. I am getting no additional help here. While this seems to miraculously fix a bug, I want to understand what is it that I am changing, so I can leave a proper comment for the next developer, plus I can structure the code and name variables differently, depending on the meaning of the change. The work revolves around ASP.net, reporting, SQL Server 2008. Please give me some examples about when you would use one connection string over another. Feel free to edit the question if you can see a way to improve it. When can you lose a 'Driver={SQL Server};? Thank you. EDIT: SQL Server 2008 is the target database, but other can be used ... or maybe will be used in the future.

• EPIPE blocks server

  I have written a single-threaded asynchronous server in C running on Linux: The socket is non-blocking and as for polling, I am using epoll. Benchmarks show that the server performs fine and according to Valgrind, there are no memory leaks or other problems. The only problem is that when a write() command is interrupted (because the client closed the connection), the server will encounter a SIGPIPE. I am doing the interrupted artifically by running the benchmarking utility "siege" with the parameter -b. It does lots of requests in a row which all work perfectly. Now I press CTRL-C and restart the "siege". Sometimes I am lucky and the server does not manage to send the full response because the client's fd is invalid. As expected errno is set to EPIPE. I handle this situation, execute close() on the fd and then free the memory related to the connection. Now the problem is that the server blocks and does not answer properly anymore. Then, it's added to the EPOLL queue. epoll_wait() signalises that the client sent data (EPOLLIN). The request is parsed and and a response is composed. Sending the headers works fine but when it comes to the body, write() results in an EPIPE. It is not a bug in "siege" because it blocks any incoming connections, no matter from which client.

  I have had the following problem for a while and I am really not sure how to solve it. There are 2 notions here: a table of contents (toc) and notes. A note usually takes 100% of the post width and everything is fine. However, when a note appears next to a toc, the toc starts overlapping and covering the note (I set z-index:1 on the toc because otherwise the note covered it, which was even worse). It's interesting to point out that the text of the note doesn't get covered by the toc - only the note div itself does. In IE7, it's even worse - the note div jumps down to under the toc and leaves a lot of empty space (2nd screenshot). So, how can I solve this? The ideal solution would have the note div occupy 100% of the visible space - i.e. it would resize itself to fit right next to the toc when needed. Any points appreciated. Thank you! • Programmatically open an email from a POP3 and extract an attachment

  We have a vendor that sends CSV files as email attachments. These CSV files contain statuses that are imported into our application. I'm trying to automate the process end-to-end, but it currently depends on someone opening an email, saving the attachment to a server share, so the application can use the file. Since I cannot convince the vendor to change their process, such as offering an FTP location or a Web Service, I'm stuck with trying to automate the existing process. Does anyone know of a way to programmatically open an email from a POP3 account and extract an attachment? The preferred solution would reside on a Windows 2003 server, be written VB.NET and secure. The application can reside on the same server as the POP3 server, for example, we could setup the free POP3 server that comes with Windows Server and pull against the mail file stored on the file system. BTW, we are willing to pay for an off-the-shelf solution, if one exists. Note: I did look at this question but the answer points to a CodeProject solution that doesn't deal with attachments.

  Are there any open source libraries (any language, python/PHP preferred) that will tokenize/parse an ANSI SQL string into its various components? Restated, I'm looking for the code in a database package that teases the SQL command apart so that the engine knows what to do with it. Searching the internet turns up a lot of results on how to parse a string WITH SQL. That's not what I want. The regex I am using is: @"([A-Za-z0-9\(\) \-\/]+):([A-Za-z0-9\(\) \-\/]+).*" It does work but only picks up the first line and separates it into the two groups like I want but it stops at that point. I have tried the Multiline option but it doesn't make any difference. I must admit I am new to the regex world. Any help is appreciated.

• Android Hashtable Serialization

  Hi All, I am having a weird issue with serialization of a Hashtable. I have made a Server, Client app. Where server(PC/MAC) is serializing a Hashtable and sending it to Client(Android) through UDP. The data is sent/read correctly but I get a bunch of these messages below on LogCat. 04-12 11:19:43.059: DEBUG/dalvikvm(407): GetFieldID: unable to find field Ljava/util/Hashtable;.loadFactor:F Occasionally, I would see these 04-12 11:21:19.150: DEBUG/dalvikvm(407): GC freed 10814 objects / 447184 bytes in 97ms The app would run for 2-3 mins and then crash. Interestingly enough I do not see the Loadfactor errors on SDK 1.5. But I do see the GC Free xxxx objects, quiet often. After debugging I have found that the issue is with de-serialization and the error/warning are coming from following code Code: ByteArrayInputStream bis = new ByteArrayInputStream(bytes); ObjectInputStream ois = new ObjectInputStream(bis); object = ois.readObject(); at Code: object = ois.readObject(); on the client. My server is serializing code is the following. Code: ByteArrayOutputStream bos = new ByteArrayOutputStream(); ObjectOutputStream oos = new ObjectOutputStream(bos); oos.writeObject(obj); Any idea what is going on? Thanks for the Help!

• How do I use foreach with QDomNodeList in Qt?

  Hi Everyone, I'm new to Qt and I'm learning something new every day. Currently, I'm developing a small application for my Nokia N900 in my free time. Everything is fine, I am able to compile and run Maemo applications on the device. I've just learned about the foreach keyword in Qt. (I know it is not in C++, so I didn't think about it until I accidentally stumbled upon a Qt doc that mentioned it.) So, I decided to change my quite annoying and unreadable loops to foreach, but I failed with this: QDomNodeList list = doc.lastChild().childNodes().at(1).firstChild().childNodes(); for (int x = 0; x < list.count(); x++) { QDomElement node = list.at(x).toElement(); // Do something with node } This is how I tried: foreach (QDomElement node, doc.lastChild().childNodes().at(1).firstChild().childNodes()) { // Do something with node } For some reason the above code doesn't even compile. I get cryptic error messages from the compiler. Could someone please explain to me how to get it right? If the foreach loop doesn't support QDomNodeList, is there a way of handling XML files that do support foreach?

  Where at all did I say ANYTHING about organizing some kind of anti-government activity? Nowhere. I do not give a flying fuck about America in case you hadn't realized, I'm talking about what I'm going to do when Jesus Christ returns. Besides, why would I make it easy for them to throw me in a black site prison? Use common sense, sheeple. In the end I guess it doesn't matter anyways, since I do not recognize the government as my ultimate authority. Police/Army/Whatever-- funny outfits and a shiny badge don't make you better than me. Allah will do away with your kind. However, as long as they're with me (as they semi-currently are), we have no problems. I fear the government will have other plans to control the population when things start to further decline, and that is when they will run into problems with me and mine, and probably a large percentage of the public. You'd have to be a fucking fool to think we'd fall into anarchy immediately, given the vast resources and blind loyalty of this country. Saying there are practical limits to free speech for anything I have said in this thread is not only ignorant, it is unpatriotic. I should be being celebrated as the modern day Paul Revere for warning you people about our impending doom. You would do well to study the foundations of this country. Nothing I have said is treasonous at all. Besides, the DoD knows I'm harmless until shit pops off, they have bigger fish to fry right now, go forward. Keep in mind, I don't personally have to do anything to overthrow the government. I just said, I would not advocate for any paramilitary organizations at this time, only if/after we dissolve into (more) tyranny. I am not a terrorist, like some soldiers in Iraq. The machine is doing a great job of ruining itself, while I get to comfortably laugh at it on the nightly news knowing that I'm ready for it to shut down.

• Are we DELPHI, VCL or Pascal programmers?

  i´ve been a delphi database programmer since D2. Now i´m facing some digital imaging and 3D challenges that make me to start study OpenGL, DirectX, Color Spaces and so on. I´m really trying but nobody seems to use Delphi for this kind of stuff, just the good-old-paycheck Database programming. ok, i know that we have some very smart guys behind some clever components, some of this open-source. Is there any PhotoShop, Blender, Maya, Office, Sonar, StarCraft, Call of Dutty written in Delphi? Do i have to learn C++ to have access to zillions of books about that kind of stuff? What is the fuzz/hype behind this: int *varName = &anhoterThing? Why pointers seems to be the holy graal to this apps? I´ve downloaded MSVC++ Express and start to learn some WPF and QT integration, and i think: "Man, Delphi does this kind of stuff, with less code, less headaches, since the wheels were invented" This lead my mind to the following... Do you ever tried to write a simple notepad program using just notepad and dcc32 in Pascal/Delphi? if so embarcadero could make our beloved pascal compiler free, and sell just the ide, the vcl, the customer support ... and back to the question: Are we DELPHI, VCL or Pascal programmers?

• MySQL-python 1.2.3 and OS X 10.5: 64- or 32-bit?

  I've been happily using Django and MySQL in development on an existing machine running OS X 10.4 Tiger, and have set up a similar environment in 10.5 Leopard on a new 64-bit MacBook, with a working MySQL and Python 2.6.4. However, now I want them to communicate, easy_install MySQL-python gave ld warnings that the file is not of the required architecture, which led me to test my Python 2.4.6 install (from the Mac OS X disc image): >>> import sys >>> sys.maxint 2147483647 Ah. So my Python install appears to be 32-bit and (I think?) won't install MySQL-python for my 64-bit MySQL. There are lots of hacks out there for MySQL-python on OS X (mostly 1.2.2), but - after hours of reading - I'm pretty sure they won't fix this architecture mismatch. So I'm stuck because I can't decide whether to: give up, remove the 64-bit MySQL install (thorough methods, please?) and use the 32-bit MySQL disc image instead; re-install Python in 64-bit mode from the tarball, --with-universal archs-64-bit and --enable-universalsdk= as detailed in Python.org's 2.6 news. So my questions for anyone who has encountered this issue are: Is installing 64-bit Python on OS X 10.5 worth bothering with? If so, (naive, lazy question!) how are the two required arguments combined? If I just skip along in 32-bit (as on my working setup) what am I missing? I'm after a hassle-free install that's easy to reproduce on other machines (possible student use) so I'd really welcome your opinions, please!

• Scheme - Memory System

  I am trying to make a memory system where you input something in a slot of memory. So what I am doing is making an Alist and the car of the pairs is the memory location and the cdr is the val. I need the program to understand two messages, Read and Write. Read just displaying the memory location selected and the val that is assigned to that location and write changes the val of the location or address. How do I make my code so it reads the location you want it to and write to the location you want it to? Feel free to test this yourself. Any help would be much appreciated. • What should a developer know before building a public web site?

  What things should a programmer implementing the technical details of a web site address before making the site public? If Jeff Atwood can forget about HttpOnly cookies, sitemaps, and cross-site request forgeries all in the same site, what important thing could I be forgetting as well? I'm thinking about this from a web developer's perspective, such that someone else is creating the actual design and content for the site. So while usability and content may be more important than the platform, you the programmer have little say in that. What you do need to worry about is that your implementation of the platform is stable, performs well, is secure, and meets any other business goals (like not cost too much, take too long to build, and rank as well with Google as the content supports). Think of this from the perspective of a developer who's done some work for intranet-type applications in a fairly trusted environment, and is about to have his first shot and putting out a potentially popular site for the entire big bad world wide web. Also: I'm looking for something more specific than just a vague "web standards" response. I mean, HTML, JavaScript, and CSS over HTTP are pretty much a given, especially when I've already specified that you're a professional web developer. So going beyond that, Which standards? In what circumstances, and why? Provide a link to the standard's specification. This question is community wiki, so please feel free to edit that answer to add links to good articles that will help explain or teach each particular point.

• What framework would allow for the largest coverage of freelance developers in the media/digital mar

  This question is not about which is the best, it is about which makes the most business sense to use as a company's platform of choice for ongoing freelance development. I'm currently trying to decide what framework to move my company in regarding frameworks for web application work. Options are ASP.NET MVC Django CakePHP/Symfony etc.. Struts Pearl on Rails Please feel free to add more to the discussion. I currently work in ASP.NET MVC in my Spare time, and find it incredibly enjoyable to work with. It is my first experince with an MVC framework for the web, so I can't talk on the others. The reason for not pushing this at the company is that I feel that there are not many developers in the Media/Marketing world who would work with this, so it may be hard to extend the team, or at least cost more. I would like to move into learning and pushing Django, partly to learn python, partly to feel a bit cooler (all my geeky friends use Java/Python/c++). Microsoft is the dark side to most company's I work with (Marketing/Media focused). But again I'm worried about developers in this sector. PHP seems like the natural choice, but I'm scared by the sheer amount of possible frameworks, and also that the quality of developer may be lower. I know there are great php developers out there, but how many of them know multiple frameworks? Are they similar enough that anyone decent at php can pick them up?   Hi, i am trying to add a swipe to delete feature to the addmusic example project (downloaded free from apple) so that i am able able to delete a specific row. Can someone please tell me how i can delete the row at that index and how i can delete it from the mediaitemcollection please. When taking that single line of code out: [tableView deleteRowsAtIndexPaths:[NSArray arrayWithObject:indexPath]withRowAnimation:UITableViewRowAnimationFade]; the swipe to delete works, except that it does not delete anything obviously since i havent added any actual delete functionality/coding that needs to be done. All ideas appreciated.

• Crash on iOS when system purges memory and closes a UIViewController

  My application is crashing when one of the views is purged from memory because of low-memory condition. At least this is what I understand from the crashlog. It happens on numerous screens but only when opening a Facebook dialog (using the Facebook SDK). Basically, looks like the system sometimes runs out of memory when we need to present a Facebook dialog (e.g. to let user post something on the Facebook timeline). So I don't believe this is caused by the application. I guess that when the phone is not restarted for some time there are applications running in the background and when using Facebook SDK the memory becomes a problem and the system tries to recover the memory from random applications, including my application. My question is, how can I prevent this crash from happening? How should I handle unloadViewForced on a view controller to make the app more robust in low-memory conditions? And lastly, am I right that this crashlog suggests the crash occurred because the system tried to free memory and my application didn't handle it properly? Any help greatly appreciated.
