Our criterion of “neatness” is as follows. If a given line contains words i through j , where i = j , and we leave exactly one space between words, the number of extra space characters at the end of the line is M - j + i -(k=i,k< j,k++) lk , which must be nonnegative so that the words fit on the line. We wish to minimize the sum, over all lines except the last, of the cubes of the numbers of extra space characters at the ends of lines. Give a dynamic-programming algorithm to print a paragraph of n words neatly on a printer. Analyze the running time and space requirements of your algorithm.

• Why does applying this gradient style break my silverlight app ?

  I am having some issues with applying a gradient to a RadButton. • Grab two parts of a single, short string

  I'm looking to fill a python dict with TAG:definition pairs, and I'm using RegExr http://gskinner.com/RegExr/ to write the regex My first step is to parse a line, from http://www.id3.org/id3v2.3.0, or http://pastebin.com/VJEBGauL and pull out the ID3 tag and the associated definition. For example the first line: 4.20 AENC [#sec4.20 Audio encryption] would look like this myDict = {'AENC' : 'Audio encryption'} To grab the tag name, I've got it looking for at least 3 spaces, then 4 characters, then 4 spaces: {3}[a-zA-Z0-9]{4} {4} That part is easy enough. The second part, the definition, is not working out for me. So far, I've got (?<=(\[#.+?)) A Which should find, but not include the [# as well as an indeterminded set of characters until it finds: _A, but it's failing. If I remove .+? and replace _A with s it works out alright. What is going wrong? *The underscores represent spaces, which don't show up on SO. How do I grab the definition, ie,(Audio encryption) of the ID3v2 tag from the line, using RegEx?

• How can I use Perl to determine whether the contents of two files are identical?

  This question comes from a need to ensure that changes I've made to code doesn't affect the values it outputs to text file. Ideally, I'd roll a sub to take in two filenames and return 1or return 0 depending on whether the contents are identical or not, whitespaces and all. Given that text-processing is Perl's forté, it should be quite easy to compare two files and determine whether they are identical or not (code below untested). use strict; use warnings; sub files_match { my ( $fileA, $fileB ) = @_; open my $file1, '<', $fileA; open my $file2, '<', $fileB; while (my $lineA = <$file1>) { next if $lineA eq <$file2>; return 0 and last; } return 1; } The only way I can think of (sans CPAN modules) is to open the two files in question, and read them in line-by-line until a difference is found. If no difference is found, the files must be identical. But this approach is limited and clumsy. What if the total lines differ in the two files? Should I open and close to determine line count, then re-open to scan the texts? Yuck. I don't see anything in perlfaq5 relating to this. I want to stay away from modules unless they come with the core Perl 5.6.1 distribution.

• How can I quickly parse large (>10GB) files?

  Hi - I have to process text files 10-20GB in size of the format: field1 field2 field3 field4 field5 I would like to parse the data from each line of field2 into one of several files; the file this gets pushed into is determined line-by-line by the value in field4. There are 25 different possible values in field2 and hence 25 different files the data can get parsed into. I have tried using Perl (slow) and awk (faster but still slow) - does anyone have any suggestions or pointers toward alternative approaches?   I have an sh script that contains the line $PHP_COMMAND -r 'echo get_include_path();' I can not edit this script, but I need the eventual command line to be (equivalent to) php -d include_path='/path/with spaces/dir' -r 'echo get_include_path();' How can I achieve this? • php import larg table to phpmyadmin database

  hi, I am so worry :( I dropped one of the tables from the database accidentally. fortunately, I have back-up. (I have used the "Auto backup for mysql") The back-up of the table is stored as .txt file (56 Megabytes) on my PC. I tried to import it by PhpMyAdmin and the import failed because the file is too large to import. then I uploaded the file to /home/tablebk directory. I have some experiences in php.   Hi guys, I have a element, containing three overlapping images. Inspecting the element in Chrome shows this: <span id=?"span1">? <img id=?"img1" src=?"images/?progressbar.gif" width=?"120" style=?"position:? relative;? z-index:? 3;?">? <img id=?"img2" src=?"images/?progressbar.gif" style=?"width:? 120px;? height:? 12px;?? position:? relative;? left:? -120px;? z-index:? 2;?">? <img id=?"img3" src=?"images/?progressbar.gif" style=?"width:? 120px;? height:? 12px;? position:? relative;? left:? -240px;? z-index:? 1;?">? </span>? The important point is that the second two images are given a relative position, shifting them to the left so they perfectly overlap the first. But the span itself is still 360 pixels wide (3 x 120 pixels per image). So how can I achieve this effect while keeping the span width tightly bounded around the images? Thanks!

Links, flash videos, etc. How can I adjust this so no matter what a user clicks on, before the video loads, new page loads, etc. It sends the simple GET request I built?   Is there a simple way to flatten a list while retaining the original types of list constituents?.. Is there a way to programmatically construct a heterogeneous list?.. For instance, I want to create a simple wrapper for functions like png(filename,width,height) that would take device name, file name, and a list of options. The naive approach would be something like my.wrapper <- function(dev,name,opts) { do.call(dev,c(filename=name,opts)) } or similar code with unlist(list(...)). This doesn't work because opts gets coerced to character, and the resulting call is e.g. png(filename,width="500",height="500"). If there's no straightforward way to create heterogeneous lists like that, is there a standard idiomatic way to splice arguments into functions without naming them explicitly (e.g. do.call(dev,list(filename=name,width=opts["width"]))? -- Edit -- Gavin Simpson answered both questions below in his discussion about constructing wrapper functions. Let me give a summary of the answer to the title question: It is possible to construct a heterogeneous list with c() provided the arguments to c() are lists. • Image sprite not lining up in firefox

  I am working with an image sprite to create my buttons. They work right in every browser except firefox. Lets say i have 2 spans next to eachother: <span class="spanleft"></span><span class="spanright"></span> and give them some styling(this is the actual code i use for the sprite) .spanleft{ background:url('/templates/default/img/auction/btn-toolbar.png') no-repeat 0 0; display:block; float:left; height:100px; width:13px; } .spanright{ background:url('/templates/default/img/auction/btn-toolbar.png') no-repeat 0 -104px; display:block; float:left; height:100px; width:30px; margin-left:0px; } Now this works in every browser i tested, the images line up great. But in firefox I get a small offset. Now i fiddled with the pixels a lot. Its not an offset of 1px, the offset is about 0.5 of a px. yeah. Ive made a screenshot of what i mean, and i'm going to put in the sprite for the buttons, they make lovely buttons, upstate,downstate,hover,disabled. You can use them in your projects.   I am using a Repeater in an Accordian which does not appear to see a single element in userArray. If I add another entry to userArray then the Repeater works fine. • CSV Parser works in windows, not linux.

  I'm parsing a CSV file that looks like this: E1,E2,E7,E8,,, E2,E1,E3,,,, E3,E2,E8,,, E4,E5,E8,E11,,, I store the first entry in each line in a string, and the rest go in a vector of strings: while (getline(file_input, line)) { stringstream tokenizer; tokenizer << line; getline(tokenizer, roomID, ','); vector<string> aVector; while (getline(tokenizer, adjRoomID, ',')) { if (!adjRoomID.empty()) { aVector.push_back(adjRoomID); } } Room aRoom(roomID, aVector); rooms.addToTail(aRoom); } In windows this works fine, however in Linux the first entry of each vector mysteriously loses the first character. For Example in the first iteration through the while loop: roomID would be E1 and aVector would be 2 E7 E8 then the second iteration: roomID would be E2 and aVector would be 1 E3 Notice the missing E's in the first entry of aVector. when I put in some debugging code it appears that it is initially being stored correctly in the vector, but then something overwrites it.   Hi Everyone, I'm working on a project which has a dictionary of words and I'm extracting them and adding them to an ArrayList as word objects. I have a class called Word as below. What I'm wondering is how do I access these word objects to update the frequency? As part of this project, I need to only have one unique word, and increase the frequency of that word by the number of occurrences in the dictionary. • How to add an object to a html string?

  I'm trying to load several images by a drop action and than resizing them and adding them as a thumbnail. The resize part is very important because the images can be very large and I want to make the thumbnails small of size. When a file is loaded I add html to an array which I will print if the load is complete. The problem is I can't seem to add the img object (I need this object to resize the image) to the html string, which seems obvious as the img is an object... So my question to you guys is: how do I do this? :)

• Matching up text in 2 different columns in a table?

  Hey guys, I have recently been working on a pastebin script (for fun) and I've come across a problem that I can't seem to solve in CSS. I have a table with 2 columns. 1 column is used to display the line numbers and the 2nd column is used to display the code. I can't seem to get the numbers match up with the lines in the code so it looks all weird (example: www.zamnproductions.com/paste.php?id=32). • auto_complete plugin error: Couldn't find Question with ID=auto_complete_for_...

  I have successfully set up this plugin before so I am curious as to what I am doing wrong here. I have built the ability for users to add tags to questions. I am not using tagging plugin here but that shouldn't matter for this. With respect to the auto complete, I am trying to have the form located in the /views/questions/show.html.erb file access the Tags table and display entries in the tags.tags_name column. When I begin to type in the field I get the following error message: Processing QuestionsController#show (for 127.0.0.1 at 2010-05-31 15:22:20) [GET] Parameters: {"tag"=>{"tag_name"=>"a"}, "id"=>"auto_complete_for_tag_tag_name"} Question Load (0.1ms) SELECT * FROM "questions" WHERE ("questions"."id" = 0) ActiveRecord::RecordNotFound (Couldn't find Question with ID=auto_complete_for_tag_tag_name): app/controllers/application_controller.rb:15:in `init_data' For some reason I am actually passing the field name as the Question.id. The plugin set up is fairly simple as you add the following line to your controller: auto_complete_for :tag, :tag_name and the following line in your routes.rb file: map.resources :tags, :collection => {:auto_complete_for_tag_tag_name => :get } I have added the controller line to both my tags and questions controller and also mapped resources for both tags and questions in my routes.rb file: map.resources :tags, :collection => {:auto_complete_for_tag_tag_name => :get } map.resources :questions, :collection => {:auto_complete_for_tag_tag_name => :get } I have played around with removing either or of the above but can't seem to fix it. Any ideas what I am doing wrong here? UPDATE: My QuestionsController#show action is fishing posts by: @question = Question.find(params[:id])
