• RenderPartial from different folder in RAZOR

  I've been trying to convert my aspx pages to cshtml and having an issue with rendering partial pages from another folder. What I used to do: <% Html.RenderPartial("~/Views/Inquiry/InquiryList.ascx", Model.InquiryList.OrderBy("InquiryId", MvcContrib.Sorting.SortDirection.Descending));%> I would think that the equivalent would be: @Html.RenderPartial("~/Views/Inquiry/_InquiryList.cshtml", Model.InquiryList.OrderBy("InquiryId", MvcContrib.Sorting.SortDirection.Descending)) This is obviously not working, I am getting the following error. CS1973: 'System.Web.Mvc.HtmlHelper' has no applicable method named 'Partial' but appears to have an extension method by that name. Extension methods cannot be dynamically dispatched. Consider casting the dynamic arguments or calling the extension method without the extension method syntax. How would I achieve this with using the Razor view engine?

• Modeling distribution of performance measurements

  How would you mathematically model the distribution of repeated real life performance measurements - "Real life" meaning you are not just looping over the code in question, but it is just a short snippet within a large application running in a typical user scenario? My experience shows that you usually have a peak around the average execution time that can be modeled adequately with a Gaussian distribution. In addition, there's a "long tail" containing outliers - often with a multiple of the average time. (The behavior is understandable considering the factors contributing to first execution penalty). My goal is to model aggregate values that reasonably reflect this, and can be calculated from aggregate values (like for the Gaussian, calculate mu and sigma from N, sum of values and sum of squares). In other terms, number of repetitions is unlimited, but memory and calculation requirements should be minimized. A normal Gaussian distribution can't model the long tail appropriately and will have the average biased strongly even by a very small percentage of outliers. I am looking for ideas, especially if this has been attempted/analysed before. I've checked various distributions models, and I think I could work out something, but my statistics is rusty and I might end up with an overblown solution. Oh, a complete shrink-wrapped solution would be fine, too ;) Other aspects / ideas: Sometimes you get "two humps" distributions, which would be acceptable in my scenario with a single mu/sigma covering both, but ideally would be identified separately. Extrapolating this, another approach would be a "floating probability density calculation" that uses only a limited buffer and adjusts automatically to the range (due to the long tail, bins may not be spaced evenly) - haven't found anything, but with some assumptions about the distribution it should be possible in principle. Why (since it was asked) - For a complex process we need to make guarantees such as "only 0.1% of runs exceed a limit of 3 seconds, and the average processing time is 2.8 seconds". The performance of an isolated piece of code can be very different from a normal run-time environment involving varying levels of disk and network access, background services, scheduled events that occur within a day, etc. This can be solved trivially by accumulating all data. However, to accumulate this data in production, the data produced needs to be limited. For analysis of isolated pieces of code, a gaussian deviation plus first run penalty is ok. That doesn't work anymore for the distributions found above. [edit] I've already got very good answers (and finally - maybe - some time to work on this). • Django Admin interface with pickled set

  I have a model that has a pickled set of strings. (It has to be pickled, because Django has no built in set field, right?) class Foo(models.Model): __bar = models.TextField(default=lambda: cPickle.dumps(set()), primary_key=True) def get_bar(self): return cPickle.loads(str(self.__bar)) def set_bar(self, values): self.__bar = cPickle.dumps(values) bar = property(get_bar, set_bar) I would like the set to be editable in the admin interface. Obviously the user won't be working with the pickled string directly. Also, the interface would need a widget for adding/removing strings from a set. What is the best way to go about doing this? I'm not super familiar with Django's admin system. Do I need to build a custom admin widget or something? • Rails & ActiveRecord: Appending methods to models that inherit from ActiveRecord::Base

  I have a standard ActiveRecord model with the following: class MyModel < ActiveRecord::Base custom_method :first_field, :second_field end At the moment, that custom_method is picked up by a module sent to ActiveRecord::Base. The functionality basically works, but of course, it attaches itself to every model class, not just MyModel. So if I have MyModel and MyOtherModel in the same action, it'll assume MyOtherModel has custom_method :first_field, :second_field as well. So, my question is: How do I attach a method (eg: def custom_method(*args)) to every class that inherits from ActiveRecord::Base, but not by attaching it to ActiveRecord::Base itself? Any ideas appreciated.

  In Germany, mobile carriers often provide a simple way to configure your mobile phone for MMS and GPRS: After keying in your phone number and device model on the carrier's website, you get a "configuration sms" sent to you. I'm trying to understand how that works from a technical standpoint. I have scanned through 3GPP TS 03.40 (http://www.3gpp.org/ftp/Specs/html-info/0340.htm), but haven't been able to find much. Also, the fact that one has to provide the phone model indicates that it is a provider specific thing and not standardized? Does anyone have any pointers for me? Also I'd be interested how the "internet-enabling" process looks like in other countries. Anyone care to share?

• How to set up a user Quartz2D coordinate system with scaling that avoids fuzzy drawing?

  This topic has been scratched once or twice, but I am still puzzled. And Google was not friendly either. Since Quartz allows for arbitrary coordinate systems using affine transform, I want to be able to draw things such as floorplans using real-life coordinate, e.g. feet. So basically, for the sake of an example, I want to scale the view so that when I draw a 10x10 rectangle (think a 1-inch box for example), I get a 60x60 pixels rectangle. It works, except the rectangle I get is quite fuzzy. Another question here got an answer that explains why. However, I'm not sure I understood that reason why, and moreover, I don't know how to fix it. Here is my code: I set my coordinate system in my awakeFromNib custom view method: - (void) awakeFromNib { CGAffineTransform scale = CGAffineTransformMakeScale(6.0, 6.0); self.transform = scale; } And here is my draw routine: - (void)drawRect:(CGRect)rect { CGContextRef context = UIGraphicsGetCurrentContext(); CGRect r = CGRectMake(10., 10., 11., 11.); CGFloat lineWidth = 1.0; CGContextStrokeRectWithWidth(context, r, lineWidth); } The square I get is scaled just fine, but totally fuzzy. Playing with lineWidth doesn't help: when lineWidth is set smaller, it gets lighter, but not crisper. So is there a way to set up a view to have a scaled coordinate system, so that I can use my domain coordinates? Or should I go back and implementing scaling in my drawing routines? Note that this issue doesn't occur for translation or rotation. Thanks

So far finding the equivalent Cassandra data model has been quite easy, but I've stumbled on the following problem for which I'd appreciate some input: Consider a MySQL table holding millions of entities: CREATE TABLE entities ( id INT AUTO_INCREMENT NOT NULL, entity_information VARCHAR(...), entity_last_updated DATETIME, PRIMARY KEY (id), KEY (entity_last_updated) ); The table is regularly queried for entities that need to be updated: SELECT id FROM entities WHERE entity_last_updated IS NULL OR entity_last_updated < DATE_ADD(NOW(), INTERVAL -7*24 HOUR) ORDER BY entity_last_updated ASC; The entities returned by this queries are then updated using the following query: UPDATE entities SET entity_information = ?, entity_last_updated = NOW() WHERE id = ?; What would be the corresponding Cassandra data model that would allow me to store the given information and effectively query the entities table for entities that need to be updated (that is: entities that have not been updated in the last seven days)?

  I am new to rails (usually a python guy) and have just been trying to build a simple task manager application for fun. I am using Devise for authentication and have a single Task object I am trying to relate to a user. I have added the following to the Task model: class Task < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :user end and I have added the following in my User model for Devise: class User < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :dreams <<normal Devise stuff>> end Whenever I added this information I then ran: rake db:migrate. It then gave me an error that the database field did not exist for user_id when I tried to do anything with it. I am sure it is something rather simple that I am missing. Thanks for the help.

Also is there any way I can use the HtmlHelper to use the markitup editor, since I can easily do something like this - <%= Html.TextAreaFor((model => model.Description)) %> I want to just get the value in the markitup editor and store in my sql server db in a string variable. • Unable to cast lists with Reflection in C#

  I am having a lot of trouble with Reflection in C# at the moment. The app I am writing allows the user to modify the attributes of certain objects using a config file. I want to be able to save the object model (users project) to XML. The function below is called in the middle of a foreach loop, looping through a list of objects that contain all the other objects in the project within them. The idea is, that it works recursively to translate the object model into XML. Dont worry about the call to "Unreal" that just modifes the name of the objects slightly if they contain certain words. private void ReflectToXML(object anObject, XmlElement parentElement) { Type aType = anObject.GetType(); XmlElement anXmlElement = m_xml.CreateElement(Unreal(aType.Name)); parentElement.AppendChild(anXmlElement); PropertyInfo[] pinfos = aType.GetProperties(); //loop through this objects public attributes foreach (PropertyInfo aInfo in pinfos) { //if the attribute is a list Type propertyType = aInfo.PropertyType; if ((propertyType.IsGenericType)&&(propertyType.GetGenericTypeDefinition() == typeof(List<>))) { List<object> listObjects = (aInfo.GetValue(anObject,null) as List<object>); foreach (object aListObject in listObjects) { ReflectToXML(aListObject, anXmlElement); } } //attribute is not a list else anXmlElement.SetAttribute(aInfo.Name, ""); } } If an object attributes are just strings then it should be writing them out as string attributes in the XML. If an objects attributes are lists, then it should recursively call "ReflectToXML" passing itself in as a parameter, thereby creating the nested structure I require that nicely reflect the object model in memory. The problem I have is with the line List<object> listObjects = (aInfo.GetValue(anObject,null) as List<object>); The cast doesn't work and it just returns null. While debugging I changed the line to object temp = aInfo.GetValue(anObject,null); slapped a breakpoint on it to see what "GetValue" was returning. It returns a "Generic list of objects" Surely I should be able to cast that? The annoying thing is that temp becomes a generic list of objects but because i declared temp as a singular object, I can't loop through it because it has no Enumerator. How can I loop through a list of objects when I only have it as a propertyInfo of a class? I know at this point I will only be saving a list of empty strings out anyway, but thats fine. I would be happy to see the structure save out for now. Thanks in advance

  I have switched my project to ARC, and I don't understand if I have to use strong or weak for IBOutlets. Xcode do this: in interface builder, if a create a UILabel for example and I connect it with assistant editor to my ViewController, it create this: @property (nonatomic, strong) UILabel *aLabel; It uses the strong, instead I read a tutorial on RayWenderlich website that say this: But for these two particular properties I have other plans. Instead of strong, we will declare them as weak. @property (nonatomic, weak) IBOutlet UITableView *tableView; @property (nonatomic, weak) IBOutlet UISearchBar *searchBar; Weak is the recommended relationship for all outlet properties. These view objects are already part of the view controller’s view hierarchy and don’t need to be retained elsewhere. The big advantage of declaring your outlets weak is that it saves you time writing the viewDidUnload method. Currently our viewDidUnload looks like this: - (void)viewDidUnload { [super viewDidUnload]; self.tableView = nil; self.searchBar = nil; soundEffect = nil; } You can now simplify it to the following: - (void)viewDidUnload { [super viewDidUnload]; soundEffect = nil; } So use weak, instead of the strong, and remove the set to nil in the videDidUnload, instead Xcode use the strong, and use the self... = nil in the viewDidUnload. My question is: when do I have to use strong, and when weak? I want also use for deployment target iOS 4, so when do I have to use the unsafe_unretain? Anyone can help to explain me well with a small tutorial, when use strong, weak and unsafe_unretain with ARC?

• rails i18n - translating text with links inside.

  Hi there! I'd like to i18n a text that looks like this: Already signed up? Log in! Note that there is a link on the text. On this example it points to google - in reality it will point to my app's log_in_path. I've found two ways of doing this, but none of them looks "right". The first way I know involves having this my en.yml: log_in_message: "Already signed up? <a href='{{url}}'>Log in!</a>" And in my view: <p> <%= t('log_in_message', :url => login_path) %> </p> This works, but having the <a href=...</a> part on the en.yml doesn't look very clean to me. The other option I know is using localized views - login.en.html.erb, and login.es.html.erb. This also doesn't feel right since the only different line would be the aforementioned one; the rest of the view (~30 lines) would be repeated for all views. It would not be very DRY. I guess I could use "localized partials" but that seems too cumberstone; I think I prefer the first option to having so many tiny view files. So my question is: is there a "proper" way to implement this?

By dynamic, I mean where the user has to submit a form. As an example, I have a page with an email form. The problem is that i want to open the 'File' menu automatically when i press Alt+f key. I could capture the keyevents on the view. But how to open the File Menu of the MenuBar (what is the function that needs to be called from MenuBar Class to popup those sub menuitems) ? • Android - need UI help/advice

  I have been working on Android for the past couple of months getting to know how various components work. One area I am completely lacking in knowledge is any sort of User Interface or graphical interface creation. As an excercise I have been asked to break down the HTC call screen into what components it contains and rebuild as close as possible. Here is a picture of the HTC call screen: From my understanding the above UI has a custom title bar where "Meteor" and the call time appears. Then the main image in the middle block along with a text view showing the called party, in this case "Voice Mail" and the number. The bottom is then a custom view maybe with three custom buttons used within it. Would I be correct in my above assumptions? So the parts I should look into start programming are a custom title bar and a custom view with three custom buttons to place at the bottom? What layout would be reccomended? I hope this question is seen as relative to Stack Overflow, if it is not then I will delete it. Thanks in advance

It doesn't seem to be possible in the template using djangos orm. I've tried a couple things with creating dictionaries/lists but i've had no luck. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

  I'm currently trying to use Devise 1.1.pre3 as authentication in my upcoming project, but I can't get it to work properly. I have done everything it says in the documentation, installed warden and the correct Devise version, run the install and used the generator to create the model. But when I try to access the sign up form (localhost:3000/users/sign_up) all I get is No route matches "/users/sign_up" But when I run rake routing I get the following: ... GET /users/sign_up(.:format) {:controller=>"devise/registrations", :action=>"new"} ... I doesn't have any files matching that controller. Is there any steps I have missed (installed, updated routing etc and created model)

I have 2 viewcontroller, in the first there is a mapView that implements the function "calloutAccessoryControlTapped" to tap a button on an annotation on the mapView; in the second there is just a UITextView.   So I have a complex form for an IncomeDeclaration. Its going to display a textfield GrossIncome for each Activity that the IncomeDeclaration is related to... this all gets done on the server and works just fine.... the problem is. I just havent figured out a way to do this without ajax... right now I want to get the template to work and append the form elements to the bottom of the list.
