• Ubuntu DVR - what are the options?

  According to my research, the best solution to use ubuntu server as a DVR system would be ZoneMinder. is there any alternatives to zoneminder out there? I'm not really happy it only has a web interface to control/view my cameras. And it doesn't have an option to record video stream non-stop. Am I missing something in its configuration? And the thing I really disappointed, I cant find a way to control my PTZ camera with it. what do manufacturers sell along with their standalone linux powered dvr systems?

• Good application for taking notes on 12.04?

  Is there a good note taking application in ubuntu like Evernote exists for windows and Mac users. Requirements for good applications:- A thumbnail/list preview for all the created notes. An integration with the email address so that we can view the notes anywhere anytime. Any easy way to input text, video, pdf, images etc. I have tried tomboy, basket notes. They aren't that good. Edit: Trying to install nevernote from an external source. • Dual monitor, with a low resolution projector

  I need to show a presentaion to a conference tomorrow. Today I tryed my Ubuntu 10.04 with the projector. My notebook has a resolution of 1440x960, the projector seems to have a really lower resolution. However, thanks to nvidia-settings I configured my video card (a nvidia 9800), it works with other display, but not with the projector. I found the projector, configured as Twin-view, resolution Auto and pressed on Apply, then "Save to x Configuration". On projector is visualized just a quarter of my notebook display. I tryed also to reduce my resolution and to change the resolution of projector, but I obtained no better results. How can I Solve it? On windows all goes well, but I need Ubuntu for personal reasons. • Install Samba 3.0.24 on Ubuntu Server 10.04 from Source

  Has anyone had any luck compiling and installing Samba 3.0.24 on Ubuntu 10.04? I'm trying to set up realtime virus scanning on Samba shares (ClamAV) using the legacy version of Samba as it is the latest release supported by samba-vscan-0.3.6b. I'm no expert at this but I think I have all of the dependencies covered and I'm following the documentation with the source code but I'm getting errors as if there is a problem with the source code. I downloaded the source directly from http://ftp.samba.org/pub/samba/stable/samba-3.0.24.tar.gz After running ./configure and make, I get the following error. Compiling client/mount.cifs.c client/mount.cifs.c: In function ‘main’: client/mount.cifs.c:1068: error: ‘PATH_MAX’ undeclared (first use in this function) client/mount.cifs.c:1068: error: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once client/mount.cifs.c:1068: error: for each function it appears in.) make: *** [client/mount.cifs.o] Error 1 You can view the full output log here. • xcode IOS5 Creating one app from several apps

  This is my situation. I have about five different apps and they all perform well. I will like to make one app with all these little apps. How can I go about this with a master view application? Also these were created with nib file (xib) no storyboard. Can I create my files with storyboard or do I have to continue creating files with xib? Also, what to do with app delegate (UIApplicationDelegate) methods that are implemented in all applications? Please explain no knowledge on this part.

  I have a Joomla! 2.5 website, and I have to add a lightbox popup that will contain links to all articles from a specific category(+subs). If anyone can suggest all-in-one solution, that will be great! But generally I'm asking, how to list links to all articles from a specific category and its sub-categories in two/three columns? I know I can set Category blog View to output only article links, without full/introtext, but in this case links will all be in one column. I need at least two. A possibility of grouping article links by subcategory would be great as well (but this is the thing I can live without). How can this be done? I'm looking for: a standard way of configuring this Template override (I'm using T3 framework) Custom extension any other method ...

• Ubuntu scrollbars don't render on Cygwin X server

  I have an ubuntu 12.0.4 desktop. I have a Win7 laptop running Cygwin. I can display windows from the Ubuntu box on the Win7 laptop using the Cygwin X server, but the window is somewhat "degraded". Specifically, scrollbars are not rendering properly. I've used Ubuntu before, but this is the first time I've seen these odd scrollbar popups that are used in 12.04. I'm guessing the Cygwin X server is having trouble rendering that for some reason. In the Cygwin view, I see the slightly thicker vertical bar, but when I hover the mouse over it, nothing happens. I'd really prefer to get conventional scrollbars. Can I configure Ubuntu 12.0.4 to do this, which might result in Cygwin being able to display them?

• Are there serious companies that don't use version-control and continuous integration? Why?

  A colleague of mine was under the impression that our software department was highly advanced, as we used both a build server with continuous integration, and version control software. This did not match my point of view, as I only know of one company I which made serious software and didn't have either. However, my experience is limited to only a handful of companies. Does anyone know of any real company (larger than 3 programmers), which is in the software business and doesn't use these tools? If such a company exists, are there any good reason for them not doing so?

From my point of view, the design of generics in Java is worse, for instance: there is no possibility to specify variance one can get around the previous limitation by using wildcards, but this means the burden of specifying variance goes on the caller instead of the library designer one cannot use a type constructor in generics What were the constraints in Java that forced Odersky to design this mechanism for generics instead of the more flexible one he devised for Scala? Was he just savvier a few years later or there were actual limitations due to Java?

• Basics of drawing in 2d with OpenGL 3 shaders

  I am new to OpenGL 3 and graphics programming, and want to create some basic 2d graphics. I have the following scenario of how I might go about drawing a basic (but general) 2d rectangle. I'm not sure if this is the correct way to think about it, or, if it is, how to implement it. In my head, here's how I imagine doing it: t = make_rectangle(width, height) build general VBO, centered at 0, 0 optionally: t.set_scale(2) optionally: t.set_angle(30) t.draw_at(x, y) calculates some sort of scale/rotate/translate matrix (or matrices), passes the VBO and the matrix to a shader program Something happens to clip the world to the view visible on screen. I'm really unclear on how 4 and 5 will work. The main problem is that all the tutorials I find either: use fixed function pipeline, are for 3d, or are unclear how to do something this "simple". Can someone provide me with either a better way to think of / do this, or some concrete code detailing performing the transformations in a shader and constructing and passing the data required for this shader transformation?

• Ubuntu 14.04 VLC Subtitles - Will not attach (unable to drag/drop or upload while viewing)

  I'm new to Ubuntu and a long time user of VLC with the Windows OS. In Windows, I was able to drag and drop the .sfv file onto the playing video and the subtitles would be enabled. In Ubuntu I try to drag and drop the .sfv file and it acts as though the .sfv file is a video and stops the actual video from playing. When I try to attach the .sfv file (view - subtitles - select text subtitles) I'm able to see the .sfv file I'd like to attach/open, although once I click open the file doesn't attach itself to the video. Does anyone know how to help me with this situation? I'm 2 seasons deep into Breaking Bad and attempting to read the body language of the characters during the Spanish parts has gone on way too long. • Graphic demonstrating emphasis of front end in web apps

  I remember stumbling across an amusing graphic a year or so ago which demonstrated the tiers of web development. The back-end was shown as a tiny box, but the front end was shown as a huge box crammed with lots of front-end technologies like AJAX, DHTML. This is all a vague recollection. Does anyone know where on the Intraweb this graphic might be? It was probably on a programming cartoon site, but I only view XKCD on a regular basis, and I couldn't find it on there. Although tagged as fun, my request does have a productive edge to it - it would be quite useful in driving home to my colleagues how UI top-heavy web application development has become.

• Debugging Windows

  After installing VS 2008 on a new PC I noticed that the Autos and Locals windows did not show up when debugging. So I went to the logical place to find them View/Other Windows. No luck they were not there. I use VS every day but like a lot of folks I only need to install it every few years, usually with a new PC. So I forgot where they were. Finding them is easy, just start debugging a project and go to Debug/Windows. The Autos and Locals windows along with the others will be there. • HP Envy Beats Edition can play CDs, but not DVDs

  After a fresh install, and various other tests (troubleshooting), I have concluded that my laptop (an HP Envy 14 - Beats Edtion) will not play DVDs, however it will play CDs. When I first got the laptop, up until recently it played DVDs perfectly, I doubt there is a hardware issue sees as it loads the DVDs and can view the files in them, but not play them, as well as read and work with CDs perfectly. Was there an update or something of the like that may have caused this? If so, is there a fix? I typically use this laptop 's HDMI out with my TV as a DVD player... so it would be very beneficial if there was a solution to this problem. There was a similar issue with the touchpad that there was a fix for... so I'm hoping that this is something similar

What I know I can track is: -what products people view on my website (default Google Analytics pageview behaviour). -what affiliate links people click on my website (with GA _trackEvent). What am I missing is: -what products people end up buying after clicking on the affiliate links. Does the Amazon affiliate program offers you any mechanism for linking a purchase with some data from your website? I noticed that I was able to add custom parameters and values to my affiliate links and the link checker was still happy with them, if Amazon gave the links that initiated an order then I would be able to cross reference the orders using custom parameters...
