• Using Supervisord, how can I start a brand new worker via supervisorctl without restarting other workers?

  Let's say I have a number of existing workers running in supervisord. I want to add a new worker to the group as well as start the new worker. I perform the following steps: I modify the file /etc/supervisor/supervisord.conf and add the new worker config Back on the command line, I enter sudo supervisorctl I run reread to read the new configuration file settings. Attempting to run start workers:exampleWorkerName gives the error workers:"exampleWorkerName": ERROR (no such process) So, my question is, how can I start this new worker process without affecting my other existing workers? I'd rather not perform a supervisorctl reload or /etc/init.d/supervisord restart command.

• Bash script runs fine, but not in cron

  I have a script that's supposed to record a shoutcast stream for an hour, convert it to mp3, and then save it. The script runs correctly when I run it from the terminal, but I can't seem to get it to run in cron (where it should run every hour at the top of the hour). • Going on 15 months for me...

  About 5 face to face interviews, 4 telephone ones and except for the two weeks Census Job. But, after 15 months looking for work, I am still with out a JOB. What is wrong here or with me? Let’s see, hard worker (check), self motivated to do well on a Job (Check), Certified CompTIA A+, Security+  and Network+ Technician (Check), 20 + years experience in “IT” (CHECK), in good health, in 20 years of work only 15 days off due to health issues (Check), 18 years experience as technical Help Desk support (Check), can still work better than younger personal (Check), Strong trouble shooting skills for software, computer hard ware and circuit issues (Check) and Multiple software languages (Hey I have done some programming) Check. Hmm I don’t see any problem with me (of course I could have missed something, please let me know if you see what I am missing).    Now as to what have I been up to since I last blogged. The same things of course, Job hunting, job hunting and study.   I have set up sim of my home LAN and will be adding a wireless print server to the sim and in real life, soon.  I was able to pull up and copy the examples of Cisco router commands that I had on my old lap top, to my newer PC. Every time I used a new command while working the NOC on my last job.   I would cut and past a copy of the command on the router (and what it did) I was working on.  Along with notes on the problem and commands use for same router. I used these to make documentation for on how to handle these types of issues, for the other Operation Techs. My old notes are helping me in studying for the CCENT test.    As to Love Dare, I think it will take more like 40 weeks, than the 40 days of the book. Yes I am making progress, slow but, it is progress. I will have more on that in my next blog.

  For some very good reason you might would like to setup a 'autoreply' only account, without storing the incoming mail into a mailbox. If not already done, create an account via Delegated Admin Gui or commadmin Commandline Tool.   TL;DR: sudo apt-get install ... saying "Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages." The problem I was trying to get the WebApps feature for PP and QQ following this blog post. I ran the sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webapps/preview command to add the repository, but i got a connection error. Since I know my current ISP gives a shaky connection, I tried again and sure enough, it worked. Then I ran sudo apt-get install unity-webapps-preview, but I realized we had to update apt-get first, so I hit Ctrl + C to stop it. Then I ran sudo apt-get update which worked w/o a fuss, but when I ran sudo apt-get install unity-webapps-preview again later, it showed an error message. Here's the dump: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. The following information may help to resolve the situation: The following packages have unmet dependencies: unity-webapps-preview : Depends: xul-ext-unity but it is not going to be installed Depends: xul-ext-websites-integration but it is not going to be installed Depends: xul-ext-webaccounts but it is not going to be installed E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages. I think this might be because of me interrupting the earlier command. It hadn't got a chance to output anything, though — I stopped it pretty fast. What I tried I have tried running a number of commands:- sudo apt-get install --fix-broken sudo apt-get autoclean sudo apt-get autoremove sudo apt-get -f install sudoapt-get install ppa-purgeandsudo ppa-purge ppa:webapps/preview` Even after running sudo apt-get upgrade after every try, none of them worked. Research I tried searching Google, looking at a couple of forums and searching on AU, but to no avail. Help would be appreciated.

  I read the manual page of the "mount" command, at it reads as below: All files accessible in a Unix system are arranged in one big tree, the file hierarchy, rooted at /. These files can be spread out over several devices. The mount command serves to attach the file system found on some device to the big file tree. My questions are: Where is this "big tree" located? Suppose I have 2 disks, if I mount them onto some point in the "big tree", does linux place some "special marks" in the mount point to indicate that these 2 "mount directories" are indeed seperate disks?

  BOOTMGR IS MISSING PRESS CTRL+ALT+DEL TO RESTART Note: This is a VM on VMWare ESX server, but that should not matter I put in the 2008 R2 x64 install dvd and can get to recovery, but it lists no Operating Systems. • Pxe boot ubuntu server - corrupt packages

  I have set up a cobbler pxe boot server and managed to get centos5.8 to fully automatically install. Unfortunately with Ubuntu 12.04-server-i386, it stops mid-way through with a message stating that packages are corrupt. I tried following this tip to unzip the Packages.gz file which results in an empty Packages file with nothing in it. Other people suggested doing a touch command which essentially does the exact same thing, an empty Packages file. That results in me getting a different message that states: Couldn't retrieve dists/precise/restricted/binary-i386/Packages. This may be due to a network..... Does anyone know how to work around this issue? Hitting continue before having made the tip/workaround resulted in ubuntu installing fine, but I need to be able to provide no manual input. Any advice appreciated, Stu

• Many commands are not found by zsh

  If I tab autocomplete, most of the time I get errors. Let's say I do a vim tab to look for the files in the folder. It just jumps to the next command line. Or let's say I press tab after typing rvm use 2.0.0 --default I will get zsh: correct 'rvm' to 'rvim' [nyae]?. If I say no, I get a command not found error. Also if I press tab after typing ruby -v, zsh wants to correct to _ruby -v. Any known bug or any help for this?

• Kerberos: Running an app with a parameter using krenew

  I need to run an application with krenew, but the application also needs to receive a parameter via command line and I need to send its output to a file. From the documentation, it looks like this should do the trick: krenew -t -- sh -c 'compute-job > /afs/local/data/output' but, unfortunately, when I run the command below: krenew -s -- sh -c './my_app config.xml > results/test.txt &' the application just dies after a while and I can see from the output of ps aux that krenew is not running along with my_app. I am not sure what the parameter -t does, and as far as I can see, if I run krenew -s ./my_app, it works properly. I hope someone can clarify this.

• Distinguishing the Transport Layer from the Session Layer

  In the OSI communications model, the Session layer manages the creation and removal of the association between two communicating network end points. This can also be called a connection. A connection is maintained while the network end points are communicated between each other in a conversation or session of some unknown length of time. Some connections and sessions only need to last long enough to send a message or a piece of data in one direction. In addition, some sessions may last longer, this typically occurs when one or both of the network end points are  able to terminate it the connection. The transport layer ensures that messages/data are delivered without errors, in sequence, and with no data content losses or data content duplications. It relieves the Session Layer from any concern with the transfer of data between them and their peers. Examples: Session Layer This layer acts like a manager and asks one of its employees (Transport Layer) to move a piece of data/message from one network end-point to another. Transportation Layer This layer takes the request of the Session Layer and moves the data as insturcted, it also double checks the data for any missing or corrupted information after it has been moved. If for some reason the new data does not match the old data then the Transport player will attempt to move the data gain until the data at both locations is in sync.

• If ssh connection fails using SOCKS then what? Automate switch to no proxy?

  Right now I am using plink in a batch routine that reconnects to my SSH server if I loose connection. I use my plink connection & socks proxy (firefox) to forward all my browser traffic. Works great EXCEPT for one thing! If I can't get to my ssh server for some ODD reason I have to go to options in firefox and revert back my settings to NO Proxy. It can be done, but its annoying! So how would I keep my SOCKS Proxy connection in firefox, but if I cant connect to my SSH Server, how can I automatically switch to the autodetect proxy/no proxy settings in firefox? I would think that I could use the Firefox command line arguments and a batch routine to do so, but I do not believe this is possible. • How can I customize the notification from Google Notifier and Google+Growl?

  As best I can tell, Google+Growl just makes the Google Notifier growl the notification instead of displaying its own. The GrowlMail plugin lets you configure what info is displayed upon receipt of a new message. Is there a way to configure what is displayed by the Google Notifier a la GrowlMail--in other words, to choose that I just want to see e.g. that there is a new message and the time, but not the sender or body, etc. etc....? Thanks!

• Cannot see boot options after editing grub background

  After solving this problem I managed to get myself into truble again out of nothing by trying to change the display of the dual boot option page in Boot Customizer. I have changed the background, the fonts size (I have increased them) and font style (I have chosen UnDotum). But Boot Customizer gave me an error (I mean a message that the application was closed unexpectedly or smth). I have restarted BootCustomizer and the settings were there. When I rebooted, instead of the normal boot options list, just the background image that I had selected and nothing else. I used Boot Repair to repair grub, it says it did it successfully, but I still get the background image when I try to boot. Any ideas? (Could it be the matter that I chose UnDotum font style? That was installed in Lubuntu - but how could it be accessible in displaying boot options?) • WiFi: Connect to a network with hidden SSID in Windows 7

  I have Windows 7 with the following station: D-Link DWA-160 Xtreme N Dual Band USB Adapter(rev.A2) (driver version 3.5.0.21). I'm trying to connect to a wireless network that has an hidden SSID with the command: Netsh wlan connect name="myNetworkProfile" The profile is configured to connect even if the network is not broadcasting its name (SSID). Despite that, the command fails promptly every time with the message: The network specified by profile "myNetworkProfile" is not available to connect. Nonetheless, when trying to connect manually using the dialog box (see image below), it successfully connects to the network after about 10 or 15 seconds. Also, Please - no need to elaborate about how useless the hidden SSID feature is.

• How does one launch PhpPgAdmin?

  I just installed postgresql, php5 and in particular PhpPgAdmin using Ubuntu's synaptic app. The PHP is running fine, the http server (lighttpd) is working fine, and I can do pg a the command line. The only thing that remains a mystery is PhpPgAdmin - just how does one fire it up to use it? I am clueless about the proper means of starting PhpPgAdmin; it isn't explained anywhere on the site for it. I tried typing phppgadmin at a bash command prompt, and entering "http://phppgsdmin/" and "http://localhost/phppgadmin" as wild guesses in the address bar in a browser - nothing happens. What is the secret? BTW, i'm only serving http on localhost, doing purely private web development.

• Grub menu will not show the first time I try to boot my ubuntu server 12.04 after it is shutdown for a long time

  I am running into a booting issue after installing Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS. Following is the symptom of the problem. SYSTEM DESCRIPTION: Dual core AMD Athlon 64 3 Disks: two SATA (out of which one is SSD) and one PATA. Using LVM for disk partition management. /boot is not under LVM rest of the partitions are. / is on the SSD BIOS boot sequence is correct and points to the disk with /boot and boot loader is installed on this disk. SYMPTOMS: POST messages Blinking cursor on first line then moves to second line Screen flickers then becomes black Everything is unresponsive, hard reboot POST messages will not show up on screen. Monitor displays powersave message Force shutdown machine again. Shutoff power to machine for a few minutes. Restart machine. POST message show up. Grub menu shows up Ubuntu server 12.04 boots normally. From now on Ubuntu server boots normally until machine is shutdown for a long time (for example, 30 mins) Repeat steps 1 through 13 once the machine is started after a long time. WHAT DID I TRY? I read several posts and have tried: radeon.modeset=0 setting the gfxmode edd=0 nolacpi boot-repair Nothing seems to work. In my search I did see only one post with this same symptom. Unfortunately, I am not being able to locate that post anymore. The interesting fact is that with this same machine configuration, if I install Ubuntu Desktop 12.04 then everything works fine. Any help will be appreciated.

  I manage a website running on Apache. It has public and private areas. When people apply for an account to access the protected portions of the site, they do a TLS/SSL protected POST containing their information which is saved to a (hopefully) nonpublic directory on the server. Then I have a python script which takes URL Encoded POSTS with this user information, sends back a plaintext confirmation to the applicant, encrypts their information with a freeware java command-line utility to protect it (specifically this one: http://spi.dod.mil/ewizard.htm), base64 encodes them, puts them in a file as a mime attachment and uses sendmail to forward the file information to my (and several coworkers' scattered around the country) email account(s) on an Exchange server with Outlook clients. This has worked well for years, but is awkward because it involves manually decrypting the information on a windows box once it is received, using the above mentioned encryption utility. This significantly limits how many can be processed. I would like to be able to encrypt my information in a format that Outlook/Exchange can inherently understand and display so that these emails can be viewed simply by clicking on them. I do have company provided PKI public certs for all the people I need to send to, and am able to send/receive encrypted emails on Outlook manually, but would like to know how I can send to Outlook from apache/linux/python from the command line using the same PKI certs. Dont need to receive them, just send. Is there a utility that can do this? I had thought pgp might but I havent been able to figure it out.

  I'm trying to rsync a file over to my EC2 instance: rsync -Paz --rsh "ssh -i ~/.ssh/myfile.pem" --rsync-path "sudo rsync" file.pdf [email protected]:/home/ubuntu/ This gives the following error message: Warning: Identity file ~/.ssh/myfile.pem not accessible: No such file or directory. [email protected]'s password: The pem file is definitely located at the path ~/.ssh/myfile.pem, though: vi ~/.ssh/myfile.pem shows me the file. If I remove the remote path from the very end of the rsync command: rsync -Paz --rsh "ssh -i ~/.ssh/myfile.pem" --rsync-path "sudo rsync" file.pdf [email protected] Then the command appears to work... building file list ... 1 file to consider file.pdf 41985 100% 8.79MB/s 0:00:00 (xfer#1, to-check=0/1) sent 41795 bytes received 42 bytes 83674.00 bytes/sec total size is 41985 speedup is 1.00 ...but when I go to the remote server, nothing has actually been transferred. What am I doing wrong?

• PSKill does not run from VbScript

  We have a site on our local IIS6 Windows 2003 server that occasionally locks up, and we would like a VbScript to kill the process. It is located in the system32 folder. I'm running these tests on the local machine. For simplicity, my VbScript file simply has lines such as these: WScript.Echo "PSKill.exe " & W3WP.ProcessId WshShell.Run "PSKill.exe " & W3WP.ProcessId WScript.Echo "Killed Process" Obtained earlier in the script, W3WP.ProcessId contains the correct process ID. The script outputs to the screen: PSKill.exe 6884 But the line that is supposed to execute the command does nothing. If I type the command in, it works fine. Why does PsKill work fine when I type it, but not from VbScript?

• I can't work locally unless connected to the internet - how to fix?

  Hi, In Firefox, when I am disconnected from the net, I want to work locally on my local IIS server (Win XP, Firefox 3.5.10). I do NOT have Work Offline checked but FF says that it cannot find my site (ie. the message from FF if you try to access an online site offline) This applies to any localhost URL. I tried 127.0.0.1 and checked my Host file - that does not work either. If I check Work Offline then it shows the Firefox message that it cannot be reached because I have Work Offline checked. Unchecking it does not help. Then - I load up Safari, copy and paste the URL into that browser and it connects to my development localhost site. It is not just browser caching as I can log in etc. So Firefox will not let me develop locally unless I am connected to the internet, which is a problem. Suggestions please?

• A font like RomanS in appearance but with support for more characters (Autocad)?

  In a Autocad 2010 installation, the standard font used is RomanS. That font is so limited on characters, so when I use "text" command I cannot add "³" on text of cubic meters measures (a "?" is displayed instead of the "³" character - see isolated text on figure below and Font characters Latin Supplement range). When I use a dimension command, like multileader, Autocad "corrects" that issue using another font that support that missing character, resulting on an awful mixture (see text on multileader below - on multileader text properties, we can see 3m{\fArial|b0|i0|c0|p34;³}). I can easily change that font with another, like Verdana, Times New Roman... that have more characters than RomanS font, but I would like to use an alternative font more like RomanS in appearance. Any help?
