  Ok, if I create a singleton class and expose the singleton object through a public static property...I understand that. But my singleton class has other properties in it. Should those be static? Should those also be private? I just want to be able to access all properties of my singleton class by doing this: MySingletonClass.SingletonProperty.SomeProperty2 Where SingletonProperty returns me the single singleton instance. I guess my question is, how do you expose the other properties in the singleton class..make them private and then access them through your public singleton static property?

• Can DBRefs contain additional fields?

  I've encountered several situations when using MongoDB that require the use of DBRefs. However, I'd also like to cache some fields from the referenced document in the DBRef itself. {$ref:'user', $id:'10285102912A', username:'Soviut'} For example, I may want to have the username available even though the user document is referenced. This would provide me all the benefits of a single document approach; Faster querying and eliminating the need to do manual dereferencing in my code. While at the same time allowing me to use references where they make sense. The idea being that when the referenced document is updated (a user changes their name, for example) my business layer can automatically update all the documents that reference it. Ultimately, I'm wondering if it's considered good form to store additional fields on my DBRefs? Will it break anything? Will I lose my data each time a reference is rewritten? Will drivers like pymongo support it?

• Any thoughts on A/B testing in Django based project?

  We just now started doing the A/B testing for our Django based project. Can I get some information on best practices or useful insights about this A/B testing. Ideally each new testing page will be differentiated with a single parameter(just like Gmail). mysite.com/?ui=2 should give a different page. So for every view I need to write a decorator to load different templates based on the 'ui' parameter value. And I dont want to hard code any template names in decorators. So how would urls.py url pattern will be?

• Best way to implement keywords for image upload gallery

  I'm starting to spec out an image gallery type system similar to Facebook's. Members of the site will be able to create image galleries and upload images for others to view. Images will have keywords the the uploader can specify. Here's the question, what's the best way to model this? With image and keyword tables linked vi a HABTM relation? Or a single image table with the keywords saved as comma delimited values in a text field in the image record? Then search them using a LIKE or FULL TEXT index function? I want to be able to pull up all images containing a given keyword as well as generate a keyword cloud. I'm leaning toward the HABTM setup but I wanted to see what everyone else though. Thanks!!

  Hi, I'm looking for an idiomatic way to get dynamically scoped variables in Clojure (or a similar effect) for use in templates and such. Here is an example problem using a lookup table to translate tag attributes from some non-HTML format to HTML, where the table needs access to a set of variables supplied from elsewhere: (def *attr-table* ; Key: [attr-key tag-name] or [boolean-function] ; Value: [attr-key attr-value] (empty array to ignore) ; Context: Variables "tagname", "akey", "aval" '( ; translate :LINK attribute in <a> to :href [:LINK "a"] [:href aval] ; translate :LINK attribute in <img> to :src [:LINK "img"] [:src aval] ; throw exception if :LINK attribute in any other tag [:LINK] (throw (RuntimeException. I also want to keep the lookup and evaluation logic independent of any particular table or set of variables. I suppose there are similar issues involved in templates (for example for dynamic HTML), where you don't want to rewrite the template processing logic every time someone puts a new variable in a template. • What do the square brackets in LaTeX logs mean?

  I'm currently working on a parser that reads complete LaTeX logs. Most of the log format is, though weird, easy to figure out, but these square brackets are puzzling me. Here's an example from near the end of one of my logs: Overfull \hbox (10.88788pt too wide) in paragraph at lines 40--40 []$[]$ [] [102]) [103] Kapitel 14. (./Thermo-141-GrenzenFundamentalpostulat.tex [104 ]) (./Thermo-142-Mastergleichung.tex [105]) (./Thermo-143-HTheorem.tex [106pdfTeX warning (ext4): destination with the same identifier (name{equation.14.3.3}) ha s been already used, duplicate ignored Can anybody give me a hint what these square brackets mean? I can't see any structure in them. I have the suspicion that lines 2/3 above are some kind of ASCII art representing the box layout, though I know too less about badboxes to justify this or identify the meaning of the single characters. Then, the "[104" etc. seem to correspond to the page numbers, but I am still not seeing the reason why there is sometimes something inbetween the square brackets (like the pdfTeX warning above), and sometimes not.

• How should I store an Java Enum in JavaDB?

  How should I store an Java Enum in JavaDB? Should I try to map the enums to SMALLINT and keep the values in source code only? The embedded database is only used by a single application. Or should I just store the values as DECIMAL? None of these solutions feels good/robust for me. Is there any better alternatives? • Kohana PHP - Multiple apps with shared model

  I'm using Kohana 3 to create a website that has two applications, an admin application and the actual site frontend. I have separated my folders to have the two applications separated, so the hierarchy looks as follows: /applications /admin /classes /controller /... /site /classes /controller /.... My question is, how I need to go about creating a shared /model folder. Essentially, both the admin and site itself operates on the same data, so the database layer and business logic remains more or less the same. So to me, it makes sense to have a single model folder, sitting outside of the two application folders. Is it possible to achieve the following hierarchy: /applications /model --> Where model sits in a neatly generic location, accessible to all applications /admin /classes /controller /... /site /classes /controller /.... • Removing zombie locks in Subversion

  I'm trying to find a way to remove zombie locks using the Subversion command line tools. The eventual goal is to do this from a hook script, but I haven't been able to work out the command line to use when you only have a physical repository path. (Using svnadmin rmlocks only seems to work for locks which exist in the HEAD revision.) Ideally, I'd like to do this via the post-commit hook script using the command line tools. (I'm aware of the python script for this purpose, but we'd prefer not to install python on that server for this single use.) We're a .NET shop, so creating a tool with the SharpSVN library is also a possibility, but the only unlock capability there appears to be in the SVNClient class. So it's really two questions: Is there a way to do this with the command line tools? If not, is there a way to do it from SharpSVN? (Or perhaps another library?)

• Excel validation range limits

  When Excel saves a file, it attempts to combine identical Validation settings into a single rule with multiple ranges. This creates one of three issues, depending on the file type you choose to save: When saving as a standard Excel file (Office 2000 BIFF), a maximum of 1024 non-contiguous ranges that can have the same validation setting. When saving as a SpreadsheetML (Office 2002/2003 XML) file, you are limited to the number of non-contiguous ranges that can be represented, comma-delimited in R1C1 format, in 1024 characters. When saving as an Open Office XML (Office 2007 *.xlsx), there is a maximum of 511 non-contiguous ranges that can have the same validation setting. (I don't have Office 2007, I'm using the file converter for Office 2003). Once you bust any of these limits, the remaining ranges with the same Validation settings have their Validation settings wiped. For (1) and (3), Excel warns you that it can't save all of the formatting, but for (2) it does not.

• Jquery cross-fade rollover problems in IE7

  I built some cross fade rollovers in IE7 using this single image technique: http://jqueryfordesigners.com/image-cross-fade-transition/ It works by placing the rollover image in the background and fading the original image state when the user rollovers the image. IE7 hates it. The rollover state shows up directly below the original image. You can check it out here: http://hardtopdepot.com/dev/inner.html It should be pretty obvious in IE7 but the add to cart buttons are suppossed to be Jquery rollovers. I am by no means a JS expert so Im not sure how to go about solving this problem, any suggestions would be very helpful. Thanks-

• Kubuntu 12.04 - Touchpad and keyboard stopped working at random

  As in the title, I've got this problem with my Kubuntu 12.04. At first I've thought that the whole system was hung, but it happened again 5 minutes ago and, while the keyboard and the touchpad stopped working, the music was still playing, so I guess that's just an "input" problem, because the system was still working! Any solution? Is there some data that you need to know about my setup? • .NET DataGridView rows' default alignment all set to left

  DataGridView gets bound to DataTable. I then try to set some columns' DefaultCellStyle.Alignment to right. It doesn't work. After a bunch of tinkering, it turns out that every single row's DefaultCellStyle.Alignment is set to left and overrides it. DataGridView.DefaultCellStyle or RowsDefaultCellStyle doesn't do anything. Makes sense since a particular row's DefaultCellStyle is more specific but what gives. Why are they all set to something and not NotSet? How do I get rid of it instead of iterating through all rows?

  I am having an issue serializing a c# class to an XML file that has a base class... here is a simple example: namespace Domain { [Serializable] public class ClassA { public virtual int MyProperty { get; set; } } } namespace Derived { public class ClassA : Domain.ClassA { public override int MyProperty { get { return 1; } set { /* Do Nothing */ } } } } When I attempt to serialize an instance of Derived.ClassA, I receive the following exception: InvalidOperationException(Types 'Domain.ClassA' and 'Derived.ClassA' both use the XML type name 'ClassA', from the namespace ". Use XML attributes to specify a unique XML name and/or namespace for the type.) The problem is that I want to create a single base class that simply defines the structure of the XML file, and then allow anyone else to derive from that class to insert business rules, but that the formatting will come through from the base. Is this possible, and if so, how do I attribute the base class to allow this?

• iPhone: UIImageView not showing images

  Hello, I've got UIImageView drawn in my nib-file and it's connected to a imageView iboutlet. I can load single pictures which will show up very nicely, but when it comes to drawing many images separately as like an animation, images won't show. I've got drawImage() function which takes NSData-objects(image data) and draws it to a screen(imageView). Main function has got for loop which loops 300 times as quickly as it can and each time it calls that drawImage function and passes different image data to it. Sometimes when I execute this code, last picture from that "animation" shows up, sometimes not at all. Maybe I need to schedule enough time for imageView so that the image can be shown? Hope someone has some clues. Thanks in advance!

• Polling versus socket servers for online Flash games

  Hi, I want to make an online flash game, it will have social features but the gameplay will be primarily single-player. For example, no two players will appear on the screen at once, the social interaction will be through asynchronous messages, there won't be real-time chat or anything. Much of the logic would happen in the client, the server would validate the client logic, but it wouldn't need to be totally synchronous, which is why I'm thinking polling might be satisfactory. I have read in many places that socket servers can be more efficient than using polling for online games, but is that mainly a consideration for games that are more multi-player with more mult-player interactions than the game I have descriebed? If many users are playing online at the same time, but each playing a relatively isolated game, and not interacting to in real-time with each players, could polling be okay, or would using sockets be advisable no matter what if you have an online game that you envision many people playing at the same time? • Has anyone noticed that a WPF file dialog will pass a click through to the UI when double clicking t

  I have some buttons on my WPF UI and I also need to choose files from time to time. I kept noticing strange problems where when I double-click an item in the file dialog, a button on the main UI would also get clicked. After experimenting, it seems that if you line up an item in the file dialog with a button behind it on the main UI and double click to select the file, it will single-click the button behind it as well. Has anyone else noticed this, or is it just a freak bug with the way I have my UI laid out?
