• Disadvantages of not having a swap partition

  I recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my laptop. Due to space constraint of the SSD, I did not set a swap partition for the OS, and I have 1.5GB of RAM. There's a warning during installation, but I think it's not a big deal since everything went smoothly. For the long term, would there be any drawbacks of not having a swap partition?

• Capture STDOUT/STDERR of Windows Applictation

  I am using an open source application (conkeror) which is configured via a file containing javascript. Any issues with the javascript is printed to the console. This is fine under Linux as all the information is shown as long as the it is started from a shell. However, under Windows none of the information is show even when started from a shell. Is there a way to make this information displayed in the shell or to capture it in say a file?

  I'm trying to generate a username using a single name field in excel which has the person's first name and last name. I'm open to what the username would be, as long as its intuitive for the user. The name fields can be tricky, as the data looks like this: Albert Abongo (2 names) Stephen Michael Essuah Ackah (4 names) Alhaji Iddrisu Abdul-KArim (3 names) I guess my ideal usernames for these people would be aabongo sackah aabdul-karim

  In Nautilus "list view" subfolders can be opened by clicking the "+" icon next to it. Would it possible to open all subfolders recursively in one click? I tried various combinations of ctrl/alt/shift-clicking but none seems to work.

• What's the difference between Defaults and Properties when changing cmd.exe or PowerShell's settings?

  I want to change the font used by both cmd.exe and PowerShell. When I right click in the window border, I see both Defaults and Properties: What's the difference? One would think Defaults was for all sessions, and Properties was for the current session. However, changes to Properties are persisted even after relaunching cmd.exe. Another problem is that changing the font in either Defaults or Properties doesn't actually change the font. This is on Windows 8.

  My Visual Studio 2008 freezes under some conditions. First, after a restart it is fine, but once it starts updating IntelliSense and counting down items it stops on the same number (the number slightly changed with further changes in the project). After that I get a sure freeze for: right-click in the code to get a context-menu changing from Debug to Release and vice versa quitting visual studio After a freeze I have to kill the process. Any idea what is wrong here?

• how do i computationally slice an audio file into small samples?

What i need is basically a batch processor for audio which does it, and names the slices numerically. i'm on os x and found Audio Splitter, the shortest possible sample length with it is 1 second though, too long for my purpose.   I'm constantly frustrated by the two separate clipboards in X/Gnome. I'm constantly doing things like control-C to copy, and then middle-click to paste, and getting the wrong data. Or select something, then go where I want to paste it, and selecting what I want to paste over, only to lose my first selection! Is there any way to merge these two clipboards?

  I am running the command time 7zr a -mx=9 sample.7z sample.log to gauge how long it takes to compress a file larger than 1GB. The results I get are as follows. real 10m40.156s user 17m38.862s sys 0m5.944s I have a basic understanding of the difference but don't understand how this plays a role in the time in takes to compress the file. For example should I be looking at real or user + sys?

• dll doesn't show up in system32 directory in Windows 7

  I copied a dll to the system32 directory. I want to register it, which requires me to be Administrator. If I right click on cmd.exe and run as Administrator and list the directory, the dll isn't shown. However, if I start cmd.exe normally, I can see the file, but can't register it.

• Enabling RSA Toolbar in IE8

  OS - Win7 Utlimate 64 bit I have installed the RSA security toolbar used to VPN into my corporate network. I can see that RSA Toolbar is enabled in the Manage Add-Ons window. However I do not see the toolbar when I right-click in the toolbar section in IE. The add-on manger says that the toolbar is loaded but I cant get it to show in the toolbars section Any ideas? TIA

  i have setup an exchange 2010 account on microsoft outlook 2010 and i can read my emails, but i am not able to send emails, when i create a new email and click send, the messages are not sent, they don't even get to the outbox folder. my guess is that the issue is not from exchange itself, becuase i can send emails with this exchange account with java code using smtp port 25 please advise how to fix this issue.

• Is there a way to suppress keyboard sounds picked up by a desktop microphone in Windows 7?

  The problem I'd like to solve is that my desktop microphone picks up all my keystrokes very loudly compared with my voice. Even just lightly tapping a key without depressing it causes a loud click to be picked up. I'd like a way to filter out this type of sound, while picking up voice normally.   How can I limit the time spent on the computer or force a log out from a Windows 7 machine? I used to use Windows Steady State to limit users (kids) from being on too long but SteadyState does not work with Windows 7 Home Premium and is discontinued. Is there a way to set this up in Windows 7 where it will kick off a user after a set time? Or perhaps there's an alternative program that can help limit the time one user is at the computer.

  The interwebs seem to be infested with shortened urls (Twitter I'm looking at you). I'm always reluctant to click these as it is a leap into the unknown. Are there any browser plugins or Greasemonkey scripts that will auto-expand the shortened URL or give me a tooltip with the resolved target? I've seen LongUrl.org, which has an API I could use to roll my own, but I'd like to avoid the effort if this is a solved problem.

• "Safely Remove Hardware" icon keeps reverting to "Only show notifications"

  I have the 'Safely Remove Hardware' tray icon set to 'Show icon and notifications' to save a mouse click when removing a USB device but every few weeks the setting reverts to 'Only show notifications'. Does anyone know what causes this and/or how I can prevent it? I'm using Windows 7 SP1 64bit with a fairly bare installation (the machine hosts a set of virtual machines that I use to do my work). Thanks!
