• pnp4nagios does not generate perfdata

  I am running nagios2, pnp4nagios-0.6.16 and php 5.2.4-2ubuntu5.19. In my setup, pnp4nagios is correctly generating perfdata, which can be seen via the web interface in graphical form for lots of services. The perfdata directory contains entries of the kind: /usr/local/pnp4nagios/var/perfdata/zeus/Disk_Space_Home.rrd /usr/local/pnp4nagios/var/perfdata/zeus/Disk_Space_Home.xml I have activated performance data for a new nagios service: define serviceextinfo { host_name zeus service_description 450average action_url /pnp4nagios/index.php?host=$HOSTNAME$&srv=$SERVICEDESC$ } This service is generating monitoring data in the format: status_info|perf_data as required for performance gathering. But somehow the performance data related to this service is not being collected by pnp4nagios (no related entries in /usr/local/pnp4nagios/var/perfdata) Are there any pnp4nagios scripts or settings which I could use to debug this?

• Thick models Vs. Business Logic, Where do you draw the distinction?

  Today I got into a heated debate with another developer at my organization about where and how to add methods to database mapped classes. We use sqlalchemy, and a major part of the existing code base in our database models is little more than a bag of mapped properties with a class name, a nearly mechanical translation from database tables to python objects. In the argument, my position was that that the primary value of using an ORM was that you can attach low level behaviors and algorithms to the mapped classes. Models are classes first, and secondarily persistent (they could be persistent using xml in a filesystem, you don't need to care). His view was that any behavior at all is "business logic", and necessarily belongs anywhere but in the persistent model, which are to be used for database persistence only. I certainly do think that there is a distinction between what is business logic, and should be separated, since it has some isolation from the lower level of how that gets implemented, and domain logic, which I believe is the abstraction provided by the model classes argued about in the previous paragraph, but I'm having a hard time putting my finger on what that is. I have a better sense of what might be the API (which, in our case, is HTTP "ReSTful"), in that users invoke the API with what they want to do, distinct from what they are allowed to do, and how it gets done. tl;dr: What kinds of things can or should go in a method in a mapped class when using an ORM, and what should be left out, to live in another layer of abstraction?

  All AIA Application Business Connector Services (ABCS) are extension enabled out of the box. The number and location of extension points in each ABCS is dependent upon whether the ABCS is a request-response or fire-and-forget service. Below is an example of a request-reply ABCS with 4 extension call-out points: Pre-transformationPost-transformation, Pre-invokePost-invoke, Pre-transformationPost-transformation, Pre-reply You can also see in the diagram that each XSL Transformation has it's own extension call-out. However for now we are only discussing the ABCS extension call-outs. To extend an ABCS, you'll first need to identify the specific extension points that are available in your ABCS and choose the one or more that you want to implement. You can an get an idea of the extension points available in your ABCS by looking into the AIAConfigurationProperties.xml file found under the AIA_HOME/config directory. Find the for your ABCS and look for properties similar to the following: false false false false Each extension point in the ABCS will have a corresponding configuration property to control whether or not the extension call-out is active at runtime. So these properties can give you some idea of what extension points are available in your ABCS. However, you'll probably also want to look into the ABCS BPEL code itself to confirm the exact location of the call-out.

• How to recover from terminal custom setup

  I installed ubuntu 12.04 and I added "Terminal" to the launcher bar, the default size of the terminal is a bit small, after some googling here is how I made the disaster change: At HUD menu, type "preference" and I see the option of Edit > preference, this is as I expected After I clicked the option, I forget the exact steps, but somehow I came to some configuration panel and there is a checkbox for terminal "custom" and I checked it now an input box is enabled and I type gnome-terminal --geometry 160x50 Now the problem comes, whenever I click the terminal button at the launcher bar, new terminal windows pops up endlessly from everywhere, I cannot do anything any more except logout or shutdown. The weird thing is, after I come back, I cannot get that Edit > preference any more when I type "preference" in HUD, I tried "Edit", "preference". To be clear, I still can use the computer as long as I do not click that terminal button, but I really want to use terminal to run commands. Help is appreciated greatly! Update - OK, figured out. Go to /home/jibin/.gconf/apps/gnome-terminal/profiles/Default and open that xml file, I can see the options I changed at the GUI, remove them and terminal runs good.   I have a website that is an Internet forum. This forum has many categories, and a single category page that contains a lot of subpages with listed threads. This Internet forum is brand new, and about a week ago I filled it with a few hundred thousand threads. I then looked at my Google Webmasters Tools page to see any changes in indexing, but the index went up from 300 to about 1200, so that means it did not index my added threads (although it added something). The following is what my sitemap.xml contains, which I uploaded to their website. Of course there is a lot more code, this is just a snippet for a single category. In my real sitemap file I have all the categories listed as below: <url> <loc>http://mysite.com/Forums/Physics</loc> <changefreq>hourly</changefreq> </url> Now, I would expect Googlebot to go into mysite.com/Forums/Physics, and crawl through all the subpages with thread links, and then crawl inside of each thread and index its content. How can I achieve this? Also if this is unclear, I will add a real link to my website.

• Designing Content-Based ETL Process with .NET and SFDC

  As my firm makes the transition to using SFDC as our main operational system, we've spun together a couple of SFDC portals where we can post customer-specific documents to be viewed at will. As such, we've had the need for pseudo-ETL applications to be implemented that are able to extract metadata from the documents our analysts generate internally (most are industry-standard PDFs, XML, or MS Office formats) and place in networked "queue" folders. From there, our applications scoop of the queued documents and upload them to the appropriate SFDC CRM Content Library along with some select pieces of metadata. I've mostly used DbAmp to broker communication with SFDC (DbAmp is a Linked Server provider that allows you to use SQL conventions to interact with your SFDC Org data). I've been able to create [console] applications in C# that work pretty well, and they're usually structured something like this: static void Main() { // Load parameters from app.config. // Get documents from queue. var files = someInterface.GetFiles(someFilterOrRegexPattern); foreach (var file in files) { // Extract metadata from the file. // Validate some attributes of the file; add any validation errors to an in-memory // structure (e.g. List<ValidationErrors>). if (isValid) { // Upload using some wrapper for an ORM an someInterface.Upload(meta.Param1, meta.Param2, ...); } else { // Bounce the file } } // Report any validation errors (via message bus or SMTP or some such). } And that's pretty much it. For example: Testcase 1 Testcase 2 The main reason that all the testcases can be run with any device is, that the testcases validates some standard and this software should be extensible for future devices. The testcases itself must be runnable with changing parameters. For example Testcase 1 does some Timing Verification the testcase needs as input parameter the datarate: 4800, 9600, 19200. Now hoping you understand the situation, let me explain my design questions. For implementing the test cases I thought about an Attribute based approach, like nunit does it. The more complicated problem is, how to define the parametrized testcases? Like this: Device 1: Testcase 1: datarate: 4800, 9600, 19200 Testcase 2: supply: 1, 2, 3 Device 2: Testcase 1: datarate: 9600, 19200, 38400 Testcase 2: supply: 3, 4, 5 How would you design such a framework? • SSIS Send Mail Task and ForceExecutionValue Error

  I tried to use the "ForcedExecutionValue" on several Send Mail Tasks and log the execution into a ExecValueVariable so that at the end of the package I can log into a table to say whether the data check is successful or not (by determine whether an email was sent out) I set up a Boolean variable that is accessible at the package level, then set up my Send Mail Task as the screenshot below with Boolean as my ForcedExecutionValueType.  When I run the package, I got the error described below. Just to make sure this is not another issue of SSIS having with Boolean type ( you also can't set variable value from xp_cmdshell of type Boolean), I used variables of types String, Int32, DateTime with the corresponding ForcedExecutionValueType.  The only way to get around this error, was to set my variable to type Object, but then when you try to get the value out later, the Object is null. I didn't spend enough time on this to see whether it's really a bug in SSIS or not, or is this just how Send Mail Task works.  Just want to log the error and will circle back on this later to narrow down the issue some more.  In the meantime, please share if you have run into the same problem.  The current workaround is to attach a script task at the end. Also, need to note 2 existing limitation: Data check needs to be done serially because every check needs to be inner join to a master table.  The master table has all the data in a single XML column and hence need to be retrieved with XQuery (a fundamental design flaw that needs to be changed) The next iteration will be to change this design into a FOR loop and pull out the checking query from a table somewhere with all the info needed for email task, but is being put to the back of the priority. Error Message: Error: 0xC001F009 at CountCheckBetweenODSAndCleanSchema: The type of the value being assigned to variable "User::WasErrorEmailEverSent" differs from the current variable type. Variables may not change type during execution. Variable types are strict, except for variables of type Object. Error: 0xC0019001 at Send Mail Task on count mismatch: The wrapper was unable to set the value of the variable specified in the ExecutionValueVariable property.   Screenshot of my Send Mail Task setup:

• Kerberos: Running an app with a parameter using krenew

  I need to run an application with krenew, but the application also needs to receive a parameter via command line and I need to send its output to a file. From the documentation, it looks like this should do the trick: krenew -t -- sh -c 'compute-job > /afs/local/data/output' but, unfortunately, when I run the command below: krenew -s -- sh -c './my_app config.xml > results/test.txt &' the application just dies after a while and I can see from the output of ps aux that krenew is not running along with my_app. I am not sure what the parameter -t does, and as far as I can see, if I run krenew -s ./my_app, it works properly. I hope someone can clarify this.

  The Back Story: As a Microsoft MVP awardee, one of the many benefits is free software, books, and various products.  Some of the producers/manufacturers ask for reviews in exchange, others just ask for a brief mention (nothing is ever really free).  But considering that some of the products are essential to my everyday computing, I never mind mentioning their names and evangelizing their products. One of these tools just happened to save me a countless number of hours.  With the release of Microsoft’s Visual Studio 2010, JetBrains released their new 5.0 version of ReSharper. The Story: My specialty is Visual Basic development.  I am not, and probably will never be a C# developer.  As such, trying to figure out how to debug a C# project, that was written 2 years ago by a contract developer, let’s just say it’s a painful process. I have a special class for config file reading and writing, written in C#.  I kept getting exceptions when the reader would get to a line that had an xml comment in it.  It took me a couple of hours to narrow down where it was happening and why, but I couldn’t figure out the best way to fix it.  It was a for loop that was implicitly casting the type of the variable.  I knew I need to explicitly cast the variable type, but only after the type was verified.  So after I finally got some of the code written, ReSharper gave me some suggestions on how to write the code better. One of the ways was to safely cast the variable into the type I wanted.  Blammo, no more exceptions in a way I hadn’t anticipated.  Instead of having to check the type before I cast it.  Beautiful, simple, and taught me a better way to code C#. Kudos JetBrains … now if it only worked better with VB (then it could be called ReBasic, ReVB, RE???)

• Updating an ADF Web Service Data Control When Service Structure or Location Change

  The web service data control in Oracle ADF gives you a simplified approach to consuming services in ADF applications, and now with ADF Mobile the usage of this service seems to be growing. A frequent question we get is what happens if the service that I'm consuming changes - how do I update my data control? Well, first we should mention that if you do a good design of your application before you actually code - then things like Web service method signature shouldn't change. The signature is the contract between the publisher and the consumer, and contracts shouldn't be broken. But in reality things do change during development stages, so here is how you can update both method signatures and service location with the Web service data control: After watching this video you might be tempted to not copy the WSDLs to your project - which lets you use the right click update on a data control. However there is a reason why the copy is on by default, it reduces network traffic when you are actually running your application since ADF doesn't need to go to the server to find out the service structure. So for runtime performance, you probably should keep the WSDL local.  I encourage you to further look into both the connections.xml file where your service location is saved, and the datacontrols.dcx file where its definition is kept to get an even deeper understanding of how ADF works underneath the declarative layers.

• Representing heightmaps, on disk and when drawing

  This is a conglomeration question when answering please specify which part you are addressing. I am looking at creating a maze type game that utilizes elevation. I have a few features I would like to have, but am unsure as to some of the implementation. I have done work doing fileIO maze generation (using a key to read the file, and then generate the level based on that file), but I am unsure how to think about this with elevation in the mix. I think height maps might be a good approach, but don't know how to represent them effectively. for a height map which is more beneficial XML(containing h[u,v] data and key definition), CSV (item1 is key reference, item2 is elevation), or another approach that I have not thought of yet? When it comes to placing the elevation values themselves what kind of deltah values are appropriate to have it noticeable at about a 60degree angle while not really effecting gravity driven physics (assuming some effect while moving up/down hill)? I am thinking of maybe going to procedural generation at some point, but am wondering if it is practical to have a procedurally generated grid (wall squares possibly same dimensions as the open space squares), or if designing to a thin wall open spaces is better? this decision will effect the amount of work need on the graphics end for uniform vs. irregular walls. EDIT: Game will be a elevation maze shooter. Levels/maps will be mazes with elevation the player has to negotiate. Elevations will have effects on "combat" vision, and movement.
