• How can I open an .xps file in Evince?

  On projects.gnome.org I read that evince/Document Viewer supports xps-files. But when I try to open an xps-file I get the error message Unable to open documentFile type Zip archive (application/zip) is not supported Reading "the full list of supported document formats" on live.gnome.org I can't find xps there. Now I ask myself (and you): Isn't Document Viewer able to open xps-files, or is there something wrong with that xps-file I try to open? I specifically want to do this with Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric. The PPA ppa:medigeek/evince-xps has no solution for 11.10, and the xpstopdf utility mixes up the letters from my xps file totally - the new pdf then isn't usable. I want to see a solution for Evince or Gnome in general, not get a recommendation for a KDE application like here.

Here are some analytics: Notice how the images, although only accounting for 65% of the total size (1.1MB), are by far the slowest loading assets: 96% of time. I'd like to know which are the recommended practices on optimizing loading speed, only taking images into account. Some of the techniques we are already applying: image compression images hosted on cookieless domain and CDN spriting everything that can be sprited http headers: keep alive and Expires to one year. Disclaimer: I have gone through the available documentation, I think by focusing on image loading optimization I am not creating a duplicate or a subjective question.

• Crashes while playing Mp3 songs

  I have Downloaded and Installed Ubuntu last month while downloading codecs for playing Music and Video Formats my Laptop (Dell XPS) crashed. later i again started the system now the problems i face are 1) After Signing in as User/Admin the wallpaper loads while all other windows disappear no UI (task bar and dock) is displayed even after say 30 min. 2) I uninstalled and reinstalled Ubnutu hence there were no problems but when i play Music files the Laptop crashes and the same sequence as above follows this has happened for last 6 times. 3) Whenever the UI disaapears after logging in the Hard Disk starts to heat up and there is considerable increase in power usage of the system. where in the power drain is notable.   Situation: the government is supposed to publish official information online such as acts and laws. Problem: they're using 90s expertise to do it. You can tell that by the constant use of deprecated html tags such as <table and the lack of any compression at all, which makes some documents go way over 700,000 bytes even though they're pure text. Side problem: some companies are actually editing and selling this content that should be public and free. What I need to know is the best approach to offer said official content in my own site for free. I've thought of setting up a mirror to copy the official pages from time to time, since some of them are updated frequently, which would automatically be compressed as all my pages are via htaccess.

  I am running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS 32 bit. I have installed HandBrake rev5474 (i686), which I believe is the latest, and the Ubuntu Restricted Extras. I am able to play DVDs via VLC but when it comes to ripping them, so that I can back them up to my Twonky media server, I have issues. I launch HandBrake and find that the only format available for me to select is MKV. When I used to run Handbrake on this machine while I was running Ubuntu 13.10 and lower I had no issues and **lots of formats (including MP4 which is what I'm really after) but since reformating and installing 14.04 I've had this issue. Any help would be much appreciated.

• Convert filenames to their checksum before saving to prevent duplicates. Is is a smart thing to do?

  TL;DR:what the title says I am developing some sort of image board in PHP. I was thinking of changing each image's filename to it's checksum prior to saving it. This way, I might be able to prevent duplicates. I know this wouldn't work for two images that are the same but differ in size or level of compression or whatnot, but this method would allow for an early check. What bugs me is that I never saw this method implemented anywhere, so I was wondering if there is a catch to it. Maybe it is just more efficient to keep the original filename and store the hash in DB? Maybe the whole method is just not useful and my question is moot? What do you think? On a side note, I don't really get how hashes are calculated so I was wondering, if my first question checks out, if it would be possible to calculate the likeness that two images are similar by comparing hashes (levenshtein or something of the sort).

• Microdata Without Reviews

  I have not been able to find a clear issue on omitting reviews from Microdata. I understand that Microdata values for reviews will default to a certain number when omitted, but I was wondering if it would be correct/acceptable to completely omit the review node completely. I can see where reviews and average "star" ratings would be of help to the end user, especially for things like recipes. However, what if there are no reviews for a product or application? To be completely clear - let's isolate this question to only software applications or extensions. What if a particular piece of software or extension was not featured on an "app store" or other site that provided reviews? Wouldn't the formats still be helpful by providing version number, download URL, compatible software - etc? Sorry for the lengthy background, but I just don't understand why it seems that reviews must be part of a Microdata markup. Or, am I wrong in this assumption?

  I'm currently working on a gaming site where users will submit virtual players for different games, like Chess, Nash, Backgammon, Go, etc. The idea is that users don't compete themselves, but through their virtual players. There will be leagues, tournaments, and other competition formats. The question is which would be a good rating system for users in this environment. Take into account that every user may have many different virtual players playing in many different games. As a general guideline I would like to guarantee the following properties: Users who have a lot of mediocre players should not score higher than users with a few very good players. A user with a high rating should not be penalized if he adds a new bad player, until he has had enough time to improve his player. • Artificial Intelligence implemented in x86 Assembly? [closed]

  Okay, so I decided that for my upcoming operating system, I do basically everything in x86 Assembly, using only 16-bit mode. I will need to write the software to host on it once I have something up and going, and I'll definitely post the source and VM-executable file. But as for now I'm stuck with the idea of implementing the AI code for some of the games I'm making to host on it. AI in Assembly is tedious, and sometimes almost impossible seeming, especially complex AI(I'm talking SNES Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island AI here, by the way, not pong AI). I was thinking that it'd be such a hassle that I'd have to bring a higher-level language to work some of this out here, like maybe C++ or C#, but I'd have to go through more work linking it into a fine binary that my OS will host, and that adds unnecessary work to the table I wanted to avoid(I don't want a complex system, I want everything as bare-bones as possible, avoiding libraries, APIs, and linkable formats for now, to make everything more directly accessible to the kernel's API).

• IIS Not Accepting Login Credentials

  I have an ASP.NET web form using Microsoft's boilerplate Active Directory login page, set up exactly as suggested. (See http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms180890%28v=vs.80%29.aspx) Windows Authentication is activated on the "Default Website" and "MyWebsite" levels, and Domain\This.User is given "Allow" access to the site. After entering the valid credentials for This.User on the web form, a popup window appears asking me to enter my credentials yet again. Despite entering valid credentials for This.User (after attempting Domain\This.User and This.User formats), it rejects the credentials and returns an unauthorized user page. Active Directory user This.User is valid, the IP address of the AD server has been verified and SPN's have been set up for the server. Any thoughts as to what may be causing this? I can post code if needed.

But most programs writes the output message to stdout in custom format and usually in human readable format. So it requires the system integrator to write a function to parse the output, which is considered trouble and the parser code may be buggy. Do you think this is old fashioned? Most Unix-style programs do that. Very few programs write to stdout in standard format such as XML or JSON, which is more modern. Example: Veracity (DVCS) writes JSON to stdout. Should we switch to use modern formats? For a console program, human readable or easy parsable: which is more important ?

• I don't understand why algorithms are so special

  I'm a student of computer science trying to soak up as much information on the topic as I can during my free time. I keep returning to algorithms time and again in various formats (online course, book, web tutorial), but the concept fails to sustain my attention. I just don't understand: why are algorithms so special? I can tell you why fractals are awesome, why the golden ratio is awesome, why origami is awesome and scientific applications of all the above. Heck I even love Newton's laws and conical sections. But when it comes to algorithms, I'm just not astounded. They are not insightful in new ways about human cognition at all. I was expecting algorithms to be shattering preconceptions and mind-altering but time and time again they fail miserably. What am I doing wrong in my approach? Can someone tell me why algorithms are so awesome?

• GRUB 2 Error : No such disk

  I have gone through many pains to boot through my windows 7 partition. I had windows 7, then one fine day I installed Ubuntu and again formatted the partition where Ubuntu was installed only to find the my Windows does not boot(Probably corrupted MBR). I again installed Ubuntu later but the Grub could not detect windows. So I manually added windows by editing the file 40_custom. But when I select the win7 entry in the grub, it displays the error : no such disk. What do I do?? Additional Info : Ubuntu version : 11.10 x64|| Win 7 Home premium, 64 bit|| While in the process of debugging I once also came across the error : Sector 32 being in use by FlexNet.|| Strongly in need of booting my Win 7 without any formats or fresh OS installations. Thankful for any Diagnostics and Solutions to my problem.
