  • Constructors from extended class in Java

    - by Crystal
    I'm having some trouble with a hw assignment. In one assignment, we had to create a Person class. Mine was: public class Person { String firstName; String lastName; String telephone; String email; public Person() { firstName = ""; lastName = ""; telephone = ""; email = ""; } public Person(String firstName) { this.firstName = firstName; } public Person(String firstName, String lastName, String telephone, String email) { this.firstName = firstName; this.lastName = lastName; this.telephone = telephone; this.email = email; } public String getFirstName() { return firstName; } public void setFirstName(String firstName) { this.firstName = firstName; } public String getLastName() { return lastName; } public void setLastName(String lastName) { this.lastName = lastName; } public String getTelephone() { return telephone; } public void setTelephone(String telephone) { this.telephone = telephone; } public String getEmail() { return email; } public void setEmail(String email) { this.email = email; } public boolean equals(Object otherObject) { // a quick test to see if the objects are identical if (this == otherObject) { return true; } // must return false if the explicit parameter is null if (otherObject == null) { return false; } if (!(otherObject instanceof Person)) { return false; } Person other = (Person) otherObject; return firstName.equals(other.firstName) && lastName.equals(other.lastName) && telephone.equals(other.telephone) && email.equals(other.email); } public int hashCode() { return 7 * firstName.hashCode() + 11 * lastName.hashCode() + 13 * telephone.hashCode() + 15 * email.hashCode(); } public String toString() { return getClass().getName() + "[firstName = " + firstName + '\n' + "lastName = " + lastName + '\n' + "telephone = " + telephone + '\n' + "email = " + email + "]"; } } Now we have to extend that class and use that class in our constructor. The function protoype is: public CarLoan(Person client, double vehiclePrice, double downPayment, double salesTax, double interestRate, CAR_LOAN_TERMS length) I'm confused on how I use the Person constructor from the superclass. I cannot necessarily do super(client); in my constructor which is what the book did with some primitive types in their example. Not sure what the correct thing to do is... Any thoughts? Thanks!

  • extra storage merge sort

    - by davit-datuashvili
    I need make a merge sort using an additional array. Here is my code: public class extra_storage{ public static void main(String[]args) { int x[]=new int[]{12,9,4,99,120,1,3,10}; int a[]=new int[x.length]; mergesort(x,0,x.length-1,a); for (int i=0;i<x.length;i++){ System.out.println(x[i]); } } public static void mergesort(int x[],int low,int high, int a[]){ if (low>=high) { return; } int middle=(low+high)/2; mergesort(x,low,middle,a); mergesort(x,middle+1,high,a); int k; int lo=low; int h=high; for (k=low;k<high;k++) if ((lo<=middle ) && ((h>high)||(x[lo]<x[h]))){ a[k]=x[lo++]; } else { a[k]=x[h++]; } for (k=low;k<=high;k++){ x[k]=a[k]; } } } But something is wrong. When I run it the output is this: 1 0 3 0 4 0 9 0 What is the problem?

  • How do I declare a pipe in a header file? (In C)

    - by Kyle
    I have an assignment in which I need to declare a pipe in a header file. I really have no idea how to do this. It might be a really stupid question and I might be missing something obvious. If you could point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks for your time.

  • problem using fprintf

    - by shiran bar
    I'm trying to print to a text file numerous variables yet it doesn't work. I checked and verified that i write it in the correct syntax. I also checked the return value and it's positive therefore i know it did write to the file, however when i open the file it's empty. I would be happy for some help. This is the code: I initiate DynsaleDayPtr in the main: FILE* DynsaleDayPtr = CreateTextFiles("sale_day.txt"); Create function: FILE* CreateTextFiles (char* fileName) { FILE* saleFilePtr=NULL; if((saleFilePtr=fopen(fileName,"a+"))==NULL) printf("File couldn't be opened\n"); return saleFilePtr; } The call to the function TextAddSale is done from a function that is called in the main: TextAddSale(DynSaleDayPtr,dynNumOfRecords); Bool TextAddSale (FILE* DynsaleDayPtr, int* dynNumOfRecords) { char id[6]; char name [50]; char priceChar[20]; char* tmp = NULL; int price=-1; DynamicRecord * newRec=NULL; scanf("%s%s%s",id,name,priceChar); newRec = (DynamicRecord *)malloc(sizeof(DynamicRecord)); if (newRec == NULL) return False; tmp = (char*)malloc(strlen(name)+1); if (tmp == NULL) { free (newRec); return False; } strcpy(tmp,name); newRec->productName = tmp; strcpy(newRec->productId, id); newRec->productPrice=atoi (priceChar); if (fprintf(DynsaleDayPtr,"%d %s %s %d", strlen(newRec->productName), newRec->productId, newRec->productName, newRec->productPrice)>0) { *dynNumOfRecords=(*dynNumOfRecords)+1; return True; } } thanks!

  • VB Change Calulator

    - by BlueBeast
    I am creating a VB 2008 change calculator as an assignment. The program is to use the amount paid - the amount due to calculate the total.(this is working fine). After that, it is to break that amount down into dollars, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies. The problem I am having is that sometimes the quantity of pennies, nickels or dimes will be a negative number. For example $2.99 = 3 Dollars and -1 Pennies. SOLVED Thanks to the responses, here is what I was able to make work with my limited knowledge. Option Explicit On Option Strict Off Option Infer Off Public Class frmMain Private Sub btnClear_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnClear.Click 'Clear boxes lblDollarsAmount.Text = String.Empty lblQuartersAmount.Text = String.Empty lblDimesAmount.Text = String.Empty lblNickelsAmount.Text = String.Empty lblPenniesAmount.Text = String.Empty txtOwed.Text = String.Empty txtPaid.Text = String.Empty lblAmountDue.Text = String.Empty txtOwed.Focus() End Sub Private Sub btnExit_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnExit.Click 'Close application' Me.Close() End Sub Private Sub btnCalculate_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnCalculate.Click ' Find Difference between Total Price and Total Received lblAmountDue.Text = Val(txtPaid.Text) - Val(txtOwed.Text) Dim intChangeAmount As Integer = lblAmountDue.Text * 100 'Declare Integers Dim intDollarsBack As Integer Dim intQuartersBack As Integer Dim intDimesBack As Integer Dim intNickelsBack As Integer Dim intPenniesBack As Integer ' Change Values Const intDollarValue As Integer = 100 Const intQuarterValue As Integer = 25 Const intDimeValue As Integer = 10 Const intNickelValue As Integer = 5 Const intPennyValue As Integer = 1 'Dollars intDollarsBack = CInt(Val(intChangeAmount \ intDollarValue)) intChangeAmount = intChangeAmount - Val(Val(intDollarsBack) * intDollarValue) lblDollarsAmount.Text = intDollarsBack.ToString 'Quarters intQuartersBack = CInt(Val(intChangeAmount \ intQuarterValue)) intChangeAmount = intChangeAmount - Val(Val(intQuartersBack) * intQuarterValue) lblQuartersAmount.Text = intQuartersBack.ToString 'Dimes intDimesBack = CInt(Val(intChangeAmount \ intDimeValue)) intChangeAmount = intChangeAmount - Val(Val(intDimesBack) * intDimeValue) lblDimesAmount.Text = intDimesBack.ToString 'Nickels intNickelsBack = CInt(Val(intChangeAmount \ intNickelValue)) intChangeAmount = intChangeAmount - Val(Val(intNickelsBack) * intNickelValue) lblNickelsAmount.Text = intNickelsBack.ToString 'Pennies intPenniesBack = CInt(Val(intChangeAmount \ intPennyValue)) intChangeAmount = intChangeAmount - Val(Val(intPenniesBack) * intPennyValue) lblPenniesAmount.Text = intPenniesBack.ToString End Sub End Class

  • What is the best way for the application to refer to the user?

    - by user292450
    Forgive my noobishness, first time poster on stackoverflow! I can have the application read: "view your messages" "view my messages" "edit your profile" "edit my profile" etc. and others like that. Is one of these more correct then the other? I suppose that I could use neither and just leave it without any pronoun, but I would rather not. The person grading is a real stickler for "grammar" in code. Any input would be appreciated!

  • Solution for this SQL query?

    - by homeWorkBoy
    Suppose you have these tables: Table Name: Salesman Fields: S_ID(Primary Key), Name Table Name: Region_1 Fields: Reg_ID(Primary Key), S_ID(Foreign Key), sales Table Name: Region_2 Fields: Reg_ID(Primary Key), S_ID(Foreign Key), sales Table Name: Region_3 Fields: Reg_ID(Primary Key), S_ID(Foreign Key), sales Table Name: Region_4 Fields: Reg_ID(Primary Key), S_ID(Foreign Key), sales Query 1: Find out total of sales of each salesman in all the regions. Query 2: Find out total of sales of a particual salesman in all the regions. (if the first one is solved I think this will be easy. :-) )

  • Weakly connected balanced digraph

    - by user1074557
    How can I prove that if a balanced digraph is weakly connected, then it is also strongly connected? (balanced digraph means that for every node, it's indegree and outdegree is the same and weakly connected means the non-directed version of this graph is connected). What I can think of so far is: if the graph is balanced, it means it is a union of directed cycles. So if I remove any cycle, it will stay balanced. Also each vertex in the cycle has one edge coming into it and one edge leading out of it.. Then I guess I need to use some contradiction or induction to prove that the graph is strongly connected.. That's where I confused.

  • Haskell graph data type representation

    - by John Retallack
    I want to represent a graph in Haskell in the following manner: For each node I want to store it's value and a list of adjacent nodes,the problem which i'm having difficulties with is that I want the adjacent nodes to be stored as references to other nodes. For example: I want node ny to be stored as („NY“ (l p)) where l and p are adjacent nodes,and not as („NY“ („London“ „Paris“)). I tried something like this : data Node a = Node { value :: a , neighbors :: [Node a] }deriving (Show) let n1 = Node {value=1, neighbors=[n2]} let n2 = Node {value=1, neighbors=[n1 n3]} let n3 = Node {value=1, neighbors=[n2]} But i get en error in let,What am I doing wrong ?

  • Where to declare variable? C#

    - by user1303781
    I am trying to make an average function... 'Total' adds them, then 'Total' is divided by n, the number of entries... No matter where I put 'double Total;', I get an error message. In this example I get... Use of unassigned local variable 'Total' If I put it before the comment, both references show up as error... I'm sure it's something simple..... namespace frmAssignment3 { class StatisticalFunctions { public static class Statistics { //public static double Average(List<MachineData.MachineRecord> argMachineDataList) public static double Average(List<double> argMachineDataList) { double Total; int n; for (n = 1; n <= argMachineDataList.Count; n++) { Total = argMachineDataList[n]; } return Total / n; } public static double StDevSample(List<MachineData.MachineRecord> argMachineDataList) { return -1; } } } }

  • Rotating bits of any integer in C

    - by Tim
    Pass a integer 2 to this function and then return a integer which is 4 x = 2; x = rotateInt('L', x, 1); (left shift the bits by 1) Example: 00000010 - rotate left by 1 - 00000100 but if I pass this: x = rotateInt('R', x, 3); it will return 64, 01000000 Here is the code, can someone correct the error... thanks int rotateInt(char direction, unsigned int x, int y) { unsigned int mask = 0; int num = 0, result = 0; int i; for(i = 0; i < y; i++) { if(direction == 'R') { if((x & 1) == 1) x = (x ^ 129); else x = x >> 1; } else if(direction == 'L') { if((x & 128) == 1) x = (x ^ 129); else x = x << 1; } } result = (result ^ x); return result; }

  • What is wrong with the below statement(C#3.0 / Lambda)

    - by Newbie
    what is wrong in the below Enumerable.Range(0, objEntityCode.Count - 1).Select(i => { options.Attributes[i] = new EntityCodeKey { EntityCode = objEntityCode[i].EntityCodes , OrganizationCode = Constants.ORGANIZATION_CODE }; }) .ToArray(); Throwing error The type arguments for method 'System.Linq.Enumerable.Select(System.Collections.Generic.IEnumerable, System.Func)' cannot be inferred from the usage. Try specifying the type arguments explicitly. But this works Enumerable.Range(0, objEntityCode.Count - 1).ToList().ForEach(i => { options.Attributes[i] = new EntityCodeKey { EntityCode = objEntityCode[i].EntityCodes , OrganizationCode = Constants.ORGANIZATION_CODE }; } ); Using C#3.0. Purpose: I am learning LINQ / LAMBDA and trying to do the same program in different way. Thanks.

  • Solve Physics exercise by brute force approach..

    - by Nils
    Being unable to reproduce a given result. (either because it's wrong or because I was doing something wrong) I was asking myself if it would be easy to just write a small program which takes all the constants and given number and permutes it with a possible operators (* / - + exp(..)) etc) until the result is found. Permutations of n distinct objects with repetition allowed is n^r. At least as long as r is small I think you should be able to do this. I wonder if anybody did something similar here..

  • Help with string equality in Java

    - by annayena
    The following function accepts 2 strings, the 2nd (not 1st) possibly containing *'s (asterisks). An * is a replacement for a string (empty, 1 char or more), it can appear appear (only in s2) once, twice, more or not at all, it cannot be adjacent to another * (ab**c), no need to check that. public static boolean samePattern(String s1, String s2) It returns true if strings are of the same pattern. It must be recursive, not use any loops, static or global variables. Also it's prohibited to use the method equals in the String class. Can use local variables and method overloading. Can use only these methods: charAt(i), substring(i), substring(i, j), length(). Examples: 1: TheExamIsEasy; 2: "The*xamIs*y" ---> true 1: TheExamIsEasy; 2: "Th*mIsEasy*" ---> true 1: TheExamIsEasy; 2: "*" ---> true 1: TheExamIsEasy; 2: "TheExamIsEasy" ---> true 1: TheExamIsEasy; 2: "The*IsHard" ---> FALSE I am stucked on this question for many hours now! I need the solution in Java please kindly help me.
