  • How do I diagnose Windows XP failure to automatically suspend on idle?

    Since upgrading my hardware (mobo, CPU and memory) a couple months ago my computer no longer automatically suspends and hibernates after the configured idle periods. Both functions work just fine manually, but if I leave the computer on overnight it's still active the next morning even though it's configured to sleep after 3 hours and hibernate after 6 hours. How do I diagnose the cause of this?

  • Netbeans IDE did work after installation, but doesn't start after restart.

    i installed Netbeans on Ubuntu 11.10 following these instructions: http://pasindudps.blogspot.com/2011/10/installing-netbeans-ide-in-ubuntu-1110.html. It worked perfectly fine (creating projects, open projects, compile, run...) but after restarting netbeans started normally and it is shown as a running application in unity-panel but I can't access the programm. I uninstalled and reinstalled it, it worked once but failed after restart. Has anyone an idea what might be the problem here? Thanks in advance. Regards

  • can anyone help me through the preparation of Eclipse IDE for android developer in ubuntu 12.04?

    I'm new to to Linux, in this particular case, to Ubuntu. I have a small android project I have to finnish until this Friday and I'm still stuck with the install and preparing of the development envrironment. The only thing I did was install the Eclipse IDE. I'm still missing the SDK, JAVA and anything else that might be needed. Can someone help me through this? It's only because I'm running out of time to develop, or else I would embarc on a deeper investigation of this OS.   • Why are my Opteron cores running at only 75% capacity each? (25% CPU idle)

    We've just taken delivery of a powerful 32-core AMD Opteron server with 128Gb. We have 2 x 6272 CPU's with 16 cores each. We are running a big long-running java task on 30 threads. We have the NUMA optimisations for Linux and java turned on. Our Java threads are mainly using objects that are private to that thread, sometimes reading memory that other threads will be reading, and very very occasionally writing or locking shared objects. We can't explain why the CPU cores are 25% idle. I had trouble finding a clear explanation of what 'top' means by "idle" versus "wait", but I get the impression that "idle" means "no more threads that need to be run" but this doesn't make sense in our case. We're using a "Executors.newFixedThreadPool(30)". There are a large number of tasks pending and each task lasts for 10 seconds or so. I suspect that the explanation requires a good understanding of NUMA. Is the "idle" state what you see when a CPU is waiting for a non-local access? If not, then what is the explanation?

  • In the java DBCP connection pool - what is an idle connection?

    A colleague at work insists that a DBCP idle connection is a connection that has lain unused for 30 minutes. I believe a dbcp idle connection is a connection that is in the pool available to be borrowed, and an active connection is one that is borrowed. Looking through the code I found no reference to 30 minutes or other magic values and a cursory glance through the code for assuring minidle does not show any such logic. If he is correct can you please back that up with a code or documentation reference. For the complete answer I would like it answered for both DBCP 1.1 and 1.6.

This happens even if the only application active on the PC at the time is Microsoft Outlook and no one is touching the keyboard or touchpad. The start navigation sound IS enabled for Internet Explorer (I have IE 7 installed), but it is not running (no window open, anyway). The clicks are rapid, as if being executed automatically by a script or process, and they always come in threes: "click-click, click". I don't see any changes on the display and I don't know how to figure out what's running that could cause this. I have tried to leave Windows Task Manager open in the hope that I'll see a process name jump to the top of the list briefly, but it doesn't happen that often and I guess I'm not quick enough. The PC is slower than I think it should be, but System Idle Process is at 96 - 99 during the event, and for most of the time when I'm not actually using the machine. Any ideas?

  • CentOS 5.5 x86_64 VPS - A lot of inbound traffic when idle?

    I have a CentOS VPS from UKWSD and I'm getting inbound traffic that I cannot understand. The VPS was setup yesterday and I installed vnstat this morning around 10am, since then the server was basically idle and doing nothing from 12pm but it's showing activity inbound which is way over what it should be and i'd say the outbound is pretty much over to top too. I'm struggling to understand this and I thought I'd get some advice before asking my ISP (and risk looking completely stupid) Regards Matt

  • VMWare workstation: guest OS becomes sluggish after being idle for 12+ hours?

    Hi, My VM becomes sluggish after a few hours(~12 hours or so) of being idle, there is no impact on the host, just the gueste. The guest OS becomes sluggish. It has lots of RAM, runs on Raid 0, quad core i5 750, everything is defragged, but the only way I found to keep it's responsiveness optimal is to shutdown(dumps the memory) and the start; a restart of the guest OS doesnt dump the memory so I need to be able to do a stop of the VM, and then a start. Coming from Hyper-V I had to learn VMWare and after a few months of fine tunning it I'm quite impressed with how configurable VMWare is. This is the only small issue I haven't been able to fix, has anyone encountered this?

It is completely idle, but yet, top is reporting that mysql is using 62% of the CPU? Why is this happening and how do I fix it?   • Why is RAM usage so high on an idle server? [duplicate]

    This question already has an answer here: Why is Linux reporting “free” memory strangely? 2 answers I'm investigating a server used for scientific data analysis. It's running RHEL 6.4 It has almost 200GB of RAM. It's been running very slowly for users via SSH, and after some poking around I quickly noticed that the RAM usage was sky-high. What's odd is that even in an idle state it's still using a ton of RAM: I also looked via htop and I can't see that any running process is using more than 0.1% of the RAM. So I wonder what's going on? Right now the only user-initiated process running is an rsync between two NFS-mounted shares. I tried rebooting the server and it was much more responsive for a few minutes, but then memory usage shot up again. Is there any way I can pinpoint why memory usage is so high?

  • error executing aapt, all of the sudden

    I know there are a lot of these topics around but none seem to help in my case, nor describe it exactly. The best similar one is aapt not found under the right path. My problem is that I can be using Eclipse for a whole evening programming, compiling and using my device, and then suddenly I get "error executing aapt" for my current project and ofcourse R.java isn't (properly) generated anymore. I then restart Eclipse and everything goes away. I'm seeing this once a day on average however. I've recently switched to amd64 and installed the latest Android-2.3 SDK and matching tools. I know that there is now a platform-tools folder that has an aapt version that should work SDK version independently. At first I had added this directory to my PATH, as instructed on the SDK website. I've also tried not adding it to my path and making a link platforms/android-9/tools so that every SDK version might use it's own old copy. Needless to say, platform-tools/aapt is there and has the right permissions, and I have been able to execute it on the command-line at any time. When I do write a faulty xml file or sorts, and appropriately get an error, I see an extra line that says "aapt: /lib32/libz.so.1: no version information available". I'm running a recent Gentoo linux system. I have everything installed to support x86 on amd64, but have re-emerged emul-linux-x86-baselibs and zlib just to be sure. The problem persists. I do see some pages that spell horror over some zlib bugs, but I'm not sure if that's related. I realize I'm not on the reference Ubuntu platform, but surely the difference cannot be that great? It might very well be a bug in aapt or the tools itself. Why would it suddenly stop working? I also experience that the ids in R.java were incorrect, namely that simple findViewById() code would give ClassCastExceptions because of mixed ids the one time, and then work perfectly without any changes bu only a "clean project", in the aftermath of a failing aapt. When I recently was trying to export a signed apk, I ran into another error message (full details from the Eclipse error view) regarding aapt I hadn't seen before. Note here too, that I can just restart Eclipse and can export apks again without problems, at least for a little while. I'm starting to think it is related to lack of memory on my system. The message "onvoldoende geheugen beschikbaar" means "insufficient memory available". I have also been seeing insufficient memory errors in DDMS when I'm dumping HPROF files.   • Can I change from BIOS IDE mode to AHCI mode at any time?

    Currently my Windows 7 computer is crashing during startup, after loading the AMD achix64s.sys driver, if I enable BIOS AHCI mode for the disks. It boots fine with IDE mode. Since I need my computer working, I am wondering if I can just use IDE mode for now, and later change to AHCI mode, when I figure out what is wrong. Background: I was running RAID mode, which needed additional drivers to install/boot Windows. But the MoBo RAID is flaky so I'm trying to switch to using a Windows mirrored volume instead - for that I expected to use AHCI mode.

  • Automated testing tool development challenges (for embedded software)

    My boss want to come up with the proposal for the following tool: An IDE: Able to build, compile, debug, via JTAG programming for the micro-controller. A Test Suite, reads the code in the IDE, auto generates the test cases, and it gives the in-target unit testing results(which is done by controlling code execution in the micro-controller via IDE). A no-overhead code coverage tool which interacts with the test suite and IDE. My work is to obtain the high level architecture of this tool, so as to proceed further. My current knowledge: There are tool-chains available from the chip manufacturer for the micro-controllers which can be utilized along with an open-source IDE like Eclipse, and along with an open-source burner, a complete IDE for a micro-controller can be done. Test cases can be auto-generated by reading the source file through the process of parsing, scripting, based on keywords. Test suite must be able to command the IDE to control, through breakpoints, and read the register contents from the microcontroller - This enables the in-target unit testing. An no-overhead code coverage should be done by no-overhead code instrumentation so as to execute those in the resource constraint environment of the micro-controller. I have the following questions: Any advice on the validity of my understanding? What are the challenges I will have during the development? What are the helpful open-source tools regarding this?   • Is there an IDE that can simplify the process of creating a game matchmaking website?

    Yes, I'm an old guy. And I'm well versed in "C" and have written several games which I have been selling on the web for a number of years. And now, I would like to adapt one of my games to be "online". Sounds simple. I'm sure I can use the thousands of lines of "C" code that I've already written. Right? So my initial investigation begins. First, I think I'll need a server program that lives on a dedicated server (or a VPS probably) that talks to a bunch of client applications that live on individual devices around the world. I can certainly handle that! (I think to myself). I'll break up my existing game into two pieces, a client piece that is just the game displays and buttons, and a server piece that does everything else. Piece of cake, right? But that means that the "server piece" must be executed on a remote machine somewhere and run 24/7. Can I do that? [apparently, that question is so basic, so uneducated, and so lame, that nobody has ever posed it before. Because hours of Googling does not yield an answer. Fine. I'll assume I can do that and move on.] I'll need a "game room", which to me means a website where you log in and then go to a lobby of some kind where you can setup your preferences, see if any of your friends are connected, and create or join games. Should be easy, but it's not. No way. Can I do all this with my local website builder? (which happens to be 90 Second Website Builder, a nice product, btw). It turns out, I can not. I can start with that, but must modify each page, so I can interact with my sql database. So I begin making each page a "PHP" page and dynamically modifying the HTML code with PHP code. I'm already starting to get a headache. Because the resulting web pages looked terrible, I began looking at using JQuery. I want to user a JQuery dialog on my website to display a list of friends and allow the user to select one to invite to the game. [google search for "how to populate a JQuery dialog from a sql database" yields nothing but more confusion.] Javascript? Java? HTML? XML? HTML5? PHP? JQuery? Flash? Sockets? Forms? CSS? Learning about each one of these, and how they interact with each other and/or depend on each other is too much for my feeble old brain. Can anyone simplify this process for me? Is there an IDE that will help me do all this without having to go back to college for a few years? Thanks, Scott

    The short question is: How do we let MSN or Yahoo Messenger set us to be Invisible or Offline when we are idle for half an hour or an hour? The reason is: if I am on 24 hours a day, some people see me as weird. Some people see my value as low, because I am always there. There are ways to set me to "Away" or "Busy" after 10 minutes, but there seems to be no way to set myself to invisible or offline after 1 hour. As I am a software developer, I am very used to turning the computer on 24 hours a day. (for example, for checking email for urgent fixes, and fix issue and push to web server). We don't turn off computer usually even when we sleep, because we may sometimes can't sleep yet and come check on the computer, or wake up in the morning and immediately need to check if everything is ok. But, my MSN and Yahoo Messenger is always on for 24 hours a day, and I found that some girls start to ask me why I am always there 24 hours a day (even though they see me as away or busy, their feeling is that I am always there). What's more, I found that since I am always there, my value actually drop in their eyes, because hard to get = high value, and always there = low value. Some people feel me as having nothing much to do, always in front of computer, or what is he doing in front of computer so much? Now since it is my job, and I need to read emails once in a while, I am in fact in front of the computer more than some other people. I am in front of the computer maybe 10 hours a day, far from 24 hours a day. Is there an easy and automatic solution to this?

  • Server load high, CPU idle. NFS the cause?

    I am running into a scenario where I'm seeing a high server load (sometimes upwards of 20 or 30) and a very low CPU usage (98% idle). I'm wondering if these wait states are coming as part of an NFS filesystem connection.     Where, or how, do I set it up in MSN Messenger or Yahoo! Messenger to automatically switch my status to either "Invisible" or "Offline" when idle for a half hour, or an hour? I know how to set my status as "Away" or "Busy" after 10 minutes, but can't seem to find a way to set the offline status options without manual intervention. Back story As a software developer, I am very used to turning the computer on for the whole day and not turning it back off. (For example, checking email for urgent fixes, fix issue and push to web server). It's not even turned off when heading to sleep in case I might find it hard to fall asleep and come back to check on the computer. Or to have it there ready in the morning to check that everything is okay. If I'm seen as being online for 24 hours of a day, some people see me as weird. Their perception of my value decreases as I'm always there (hard to get = high value; always there = low value). Leaving it on makes everyone in my contacts list think I have nothing better to do all day than sit in front of the computer. Even though it's my job and I do admittedly spend more time online than other people. That's why I'd like to find a way to set my status as Invisible or Offline.

  • C# code cleaning/auditing tool (stand-alone outside of the IDE).

    Does anyone know of a stand-alone tool for C# code cleaning/auditing that can run outside of Visual Studio IDE so as to be part of a build. Or if that isn't possible can someone provide some guidance as to how to make Visual Studio part of a build process -- by that I mean it would be nice to run the IDE's Sort and Remove unused using statements on all files as part of the build, but even better would be an exe that can read the .sln, or .csproj and do the job as part of build system.
