  • Can I install Ubuntu 13.10 without the internet?

    I'm new to Ubuntu and Linux in general. I'm currently out of town and the dorm I am living in has terrible internet connection. It won't be another 2-3 weeks before I can go home and have proper internet connection. So my question is whether or not I can install Ubuntu 13.10 in my laptop without the internet and then do the updates once I go home? Also, I'm attempting to do a dual boot with my Lenovo G505s which was pre-installed with Windows 8. Hopefully I can pull this off. I already did the necessary things (I think and hope so) prior to installation: Disable secure boot Enable legacy and boot UEFI first Create partition Put installer in my pen drive As I am quite new to this, any advice would be of great help. Thanks in advance! EDIT: I tried yesterday. The installation asked me to connect to the internet, so I used my crappy dorm internet. When it reached the downloading/installtion of Ubuntu One, it just stopped and went on forever. So I had to stop it.

  • IE7 preventDefault() not working on skip links

    I currently have skip links that jump to the div ids and was using e.preventDefault() to stop the url from changing when jumping to the element but in IE7 and IE8 it doesn't work at all using e.preventDefault() and if I take it out the url changes to the div the anchor tag contains reference to. Is their any fix or way around this?   • Non-floated div drops below right floated div in IE9 (and 7)

    This is a responsive site, (http://www.dermatologypartners.com) with desktop styles first. IE8 handles the pages correctly, though without CSS3 flourishes. But IE9 is dropping my navbar (on left) down, when it is up next to the right floated content in all the other browsers. My navbar is near the end of the HTML because I want it to flow over LAST, below page content but above the footer, in the smartphone version of the site -- which it does. The nav is NOT floated. It just rises to the top left and content is floated to the right. Except in IE9. I don't to have to redo all this, if I can just get an IE9 fix. It's not "float drop" - there's plenty of room available. I'm actually having the same problem in IE7, but I'm not concerned with IE7 -- but why 7 & 9, while 8 is fine? Thanks!

Before Here we are…Internet Explorer 8 with a lot of How-To Geek Network goodness ready to go. The Taskbar Thumbnail Previews look very nice, but perhaps they take up too much room for those of you who like to keep things simple. The Taskbar Icon has the classic “fanned edge” look just like any other software with Taskbar Thumbnail Previews active. Disabling the Thumbnail Previews If you want to deactivate the Taskbar Thumbnail Previews for Internet Explorer, it is quite easy and will only take you a few moments to complete. Open IE and go to Tools \ Internet Options. When the Internet Options Window opens you will already be on the General Tab. Under the Tabs Section, click on the Settings button. The Tabbed Browsing Settings window opens. Uncheck Show previews for individual tabs in the taskbar and click OK. When you are returned to the Internet Options Window, click OK once again to totally exit out. Note: A browser restart will be required for the changes to take effect.     Here's the setup: 2 companies (A & B) share office space and a LAN. A 2nd ISP is brought in and company A wants it's own Internet connection (ISP A) and company B wants it's own Internet connection (ISP B). VLANs are deployed internally to separate the 2 company's networks (company A: VLAN 1, company B: VLAN 2, shared VOIP: VLAN 3). With separate VLANs it's simple enough to use separate DHCP servers (or separate scopes on the same server) to assign the default gateway to each company's gateway for their Internet connection. Static routes can be created on each gateway to point traffic destined for the other company's VLAN or the voice VLAN so that all nodes are reachable as expected. However, I think this is a form of asymmetrical routing, right? (The path from node A1 to node B1 is not the same as the path back from node B1 to node A1). Can I setup policy-based routing to correct this? In that case, can I assign the same default gateway to every device on all VLANs and create a routing policy on a L3 switch to look at the source address and forward traffic to the appropriate next hop? In that case, I want the routing logic to go like this: If the destination address is known, forward the traffic (traffic destined for a different VLAN). If the destination address is unknown, forward the traffic to ISP A's gateway if the source address is on VLAN A; or forward the traffic to ISP B's gateway if the source address is VLAN B. Am I thinking about this problem in the correct way? Is there another way to solve this problem that I am overlooking?

    I would like to pull into a truck stop and offer a folder of free documentaries to quell some of the ignorance LOL I run Linux ";-) Very happy to have made that switch by the way...and have an internal wireless in the laptop but my bus has an antenna on the roof which I connect via usb to create a wireless signal (this is the one I'd like to focus on since it will offer the most reach to all those truckers out there. My question is this. I'm running apache2 and have a bunch of videos tossed into the www folder and can access it locally and would like others that frown on paying to use the truckstops slow internet service and would like an alternative by simply logging onto me and getting the narrow content I offer freely without passwords and the like. Has anyone a good means of doing this? p.s. I've done this in the past but am getting old and forgetful (my crutch)

I have found some programs that allow me to see the network, so I know the hardware works. However, this program does not allow me to pick the correct program to play the files I want. I suspect the problem lies somewhere on the XP side. This would probably work better if the Archos 5 allowed me to manually input the IP address. Help?

  • Share between Ubuntu machines

    I'm sure it might be a very easy way to do this, but I haven't found how... I have two machines with Ubuntu 10.10 on the same network (just workgroup, no domain involved). On one of them I have shared a folder through Nautilus Folder Sharing. When opening the Network place on the second machine, I cannot see the first one listed, just Windows Network and when going into this folder I can see the Workgroup though when trying to go into it I get an Unable to mount. Failed to retrieve share list from server error. Is it required to do something else when sharing the folder through Nautilus?

  • Is there any way to limit my Internet connection to a per program basis?

    My Linux connection is REALLY free. I live in Brazil, so where I live I can only have 1 Mbit/s. Yes I know it's sad, but it's not the point. Everytime I'm updating my Ubuntu 9.04 or downloading something, it does eat all my bandwidth. Like, while update-manager is downloading the packages, I can see by netspeed applet in my panel that the incoming traffic goes to 110 kB/s. And then, my Emesene suddenly goes disconnected, and I can't navigate. As you can imagine, I can't use my Internet connection again until the packages are all downloaded or I cancel the update in the middle. As I said, same thing happens when I'm dowloading something, but less intrusive and immediate. The question is: is there any way to limit that APT/downloads traffic to some way I can still use my other Internet services, or to reserve some bandwidth for common navigation tasks (like we have on Windows, but I forgot this thing's name, it's like "something packages".

  • trouble with internet connection - slow to open web pages if they open at all until I put VPN on and then they open ok

    I am having problems with my internet connection. At the moment I am on a mac and connected through a netgear wireless router. The internet connection either won't open a webpage at all or if it does it takes ages. However if I turn my VPN on the pages open at a normal speed. Also skype functions OK and I seem to be able to download files ok. I have tried connecting with a wire between the router and the computer and it makes no difference.
