• Ways to give feedback on Silverlight

  There are a few ways to give feedback on Silverlight. I wanted to share my thoughts on them as some are obvious and some arent. First and foremost, the team is currently (Apr-May 2010) conducting a public survey on the next version planning. • How can I build this payment receipt/booking application?

  I'm planning to build a payment receipt/booking application for a media company with several branches in different locations. The application should be able to move data across the network/internet to a central database where the administrator/accountant in a different location will be able to see the result of the entire job for the day from each branch. Application will run on windows environment. Will be able to send result of the booking to a Point Of Sales printer for print output. Now, I'm confused about choosing the right programming language to accomplish this task. I'm between beginner/intermediate level in PHP, I know HTML/CSS and JavaScript. I have tried to do this in PHP but, I'm face with several challenges and I fear for the POS part since PHP application run on the web browser. I don't know if python will be best suited for this and how long will it take someone with my experience level to pick up python. Any suggestion will be highly appreciated.

• SQLBits 9 goes to Liverpool

  SQLBits 9 has now been announced as 29th September to 1st October 2011 at the Adelphi Hotel in Liverpool. This will follow the now familiar three day format, a training day, and two full days of concurrent sessions. Saturday 1st October will of course be the free community day. Despite growing the event quite dramatically over the past four years, this is something we are all very proud to have maintained and is a key factor when planning the events. Plenty of more info to come, but in the meantime session submission is now open so why not submit an abstract?

• Will there be data loss for upgrade?

  I am planning to upgrade from 8.10 to 10.04. But I am wondering if there will be data loss during the upgrade? For example: Will the application that I have installed on 8.10 still be there after upgrade? Will the settings of the applications such as the bookmarks for Firefox and for Google Chrome be preserved? Will all the personal files under my home directory be preserved? Any other things I need to know for the upgrade? Thanks and regards!

  From the new Nautilus releases exist the ability to create shortcut/bookmarks simply by drag&drop folder onto the nautilus left panel; However, this behavior can unintentionally create additional bookmarks if you are not very accurate when dragging files to bookmarks, especially by people with little experience in the use of computer. • Is is OK to use a non-primary key as the id in a rails resource?

  I am getting ready to set up a resource for some new api calls to my rails application. I am planning on calling the resource devices ie resources :devices This is going to represent a android mobile devices I know this will get me routes such as GET devices/:id In most cases :id would be an integer representing the primary key, and in the controller we would use :id as such: GET devices/1 @device = Device.find(params[:id]) In this case I would like to use :id as the google_cloud_messaging_reg_id So I would like to have requests like this: GET devices/some_long_gcm_id and then in the controller , just us params[:id] to look up the device by the gcm registration id. This seem more natural, since the device will know it's gcm id rather than it's rails integer id. Are there any reasons I should avoid doing this?

• What about the performance enhancement when using an SSD as the main disk?

  I'm planning to buy a new PC and I am thinking about using an SSD as the main disk. I'd also use a standard spinning disk and I'd mount it to /home. To the people already using such a setup: does this induce a practical, noticeable enhancement in performance? I think that access times, rather than transfer rates, are the more useful feature of SSD's. I would like to know if they have a noticeable effect on a desktop installation of Ubuntu. This service will then relay those commands to other services (call them B and C) which are written, respectively, in .NET and Java (service A chooses which of service B or C to which to relay depending on the contents of the request to service A). I am looking for a framework that will allow for interoperability with both .NET and with Java, for example WCF or JAX-WS, or writing a custom framework (e.g., JSON REST commands over HTTP, similar to http://code.google.com/p/selenium/wiki/JsonWireProtocol). What questions/aspects should I consider in deciding?

• How to elegantly work with a lot of print functions?

  I'm working on a Python project that is executed on a terminal (or console) for which I am planning to implement a GUI. I did not major in CS so I really have no idea how to effectively design a terminal GUI such that: the user interface looks good in GUI, it is directed to a certain widget, let's say, a text label, or a bottom bar, or a hide-able frame. Do you have any suggestions? Currently, I am using the print function to provide essential information on STDOUT during execution, so a lot of print calls are distributed here and there in the code. I'm thinking of using macro-like variables such as 'FILE_NOT_EXISTS_MESSAGE' for printing, and all of them and their values would be defined in one file. Is that a standard way to do this? Should I introduce a logging system? In summary, I'm looking for a pattern for handling console output that is effective and adaptable.

• Powerpoint: remote pointing and slide track device

  I think that this question may not be suitable for this forum. But I need your help. I am planning to buy a remote pointing (not only just pointing, we will be able to track the slides) device for my powerpoint presentations. I always use Ubuntu and powerpoint with libreoffice impress. I have been looking products on amazon, most of them are either for Windows or MAC. I am not sure whether they will work on Ubuntu. I think that at least some of of you have been using a device for presentations on Ubuntu. It would be great if you share one that will work seamlessly with Ubuntu. Thanks.

• Will Google follow HTML refresh?

  I want to move my current Tumblr blog to static HTML blog. Currently I am using a custom domain, I am planning on doing the move when Google sees domain name change. I am considering two options: Buying a hosting service Using GitHub pages Buying a hosting service would probably mean I am going to pay for lots of things that I don't need like PHP, MySQL, e-mail service etc. On the other hand, if I use GitHub pages, I can't use .htaccess file to make 301 redirects. I want to change my URL structure and this is important to me. I was wondering if I use: <meta http-equiv=refresh content="0; url=http://example.com/newurl" /> Would Google see it as 301 redirect, so that I won't use my search engine value?

• Architecture driven by users, or by actions/content?

  I have a question about designing MVC app architecture. Let's say our application has three main categories of views (items of type 1, items of type 2...). And we have three (or more in future) types of users - Admins, let's say Moderators and typical Users. And in the future there might be more of them. Admins have full access to app, Moderators can visit only 2/3 type of items, and Users can visit only basic type of items. Should I divide my controllers/views/whatever like this: Items "A", Items "B", Items "C", then make them 100% finished and at the end add access privileges? Pros: DRY option Cons Conditional expressions in views Or another options: Items "A" / Admin, Items "A" / Moderator / Items "B" Admin ...? Pros: Divided parts of application for specific user (is that pros?) Cons: A lot of repeated code I don't have great experience in planning such things so it would nice if you can give me some tips or links to learn something about it.

  Lets say I have library "A2" as a dependency in a project. Library "A2" is derived from library "A1" where someone has done few changes to the library "A1" 's source code. Lets say there is a new version of "A1" I want to use the new version but no modification to its sourcecode at all. I am planning to identify what are the changes done to the original library when deriving library "A2" out of it and decorate the latest version of the library with those changes. Is it a good approach to solve this? if not can someone suggest the best approach to solve this kind of problems?

Raspberry pi is small and efficient but i don't know whether it can support 2 TB or more external hard disk. Where as in Intel i can have internal hard disk and at the same time external also and will be more faster with 2gb or 4gb RAM. Which is better Raspberry pi or Intel,is it possible to stimulate my ubuntu in Intel processor. the main reason using processor it to give the system decision making capability ,understanding and analyzing capabilities using different algorithm's .my processor should analyze the condition take proper steps in running the appropriate application

• Using PDO for Data Management

  This question is more a design oriented question than a code specific question. I am new to PHP and I am planning to use PDO as a data access layer. Say for instance I have a class called CITY. Now if I need to create an instance of this class, what is the best technique. Should have a singleton DB access class which is used to write and read data from the db layer. OR should I delegate it to the individual class object. For example if I invoke city.save() (city is a class), then the city class will handle the saving of that city object's data into the database. Excuse my ignorance but i have a java background and therefore trying to understand what is the best design principle for data management when using php.

• Image classification using openCV and weka

  Hi i want to do image classification, so i am planning to use openCV for the preprocessing of image and weka to check which ML algorithm gives best result, so the problem i am facing is converting the image data in to weka ARFF file format, when i apply some image transformation to image and write the image data it become so large and not sure how to define @ATTRIBUTE for that.   Hi, I need to find the kth smallest element in the binary search tree without using any static/global variable. How to achieve it efficiently? The solution that I have in my mind is doing the operation in O(n), the worst case since I am planning to do an inorder traversal of the entire tree. But deep down I feel that I am not using the BST property here. Is my assumptive solution correct or is there a better one available ?

• Mike Cohn-style burndown charts in JIRA

  We use Jira/Greenhopper for our project planning/tracking. The built-in graphs are great, but when a new issue/story is added during a project, the whole burn-down graph moves up rather than increasing the part of the graph when the issue was added. Ideally I'd like to generate a Mike Cohn-style burndown graph, which shows a hump when new issues are added. Does anyone know of any plugins that support this, or been able to extract this data directly from the database?
