Why is Android VM-based? [closed]

By about 2004, it was clear that ARM is the clear winner for mobile CPUs, beating out MIPS, SH3, and DragonBall. PocketPC (Windows Mobile) applications was natively-compiled (at least most of them - except for .NET compact and its competitors). Likewise, Apple's iOS (named iPhone OS at the time) prefers natively-compiled applications. Then why Android chose a virtual machine based system stack? (the Dalvik VM). Wouldn't it be simpler to just compile applications down to ARM code using GCJ or something? Is the decision influenced by the J2ME-way of doing things, or was just because it's "cool"? Perhaps like most things Java, the culture that prefers multiple levels of indirection and abstractions, they just added another layer of abstraction for "just in case"?

How to choose a language, when taking in account the community it includes?

I was reading the following article: Great Hackers The following part grabbed my attention: "When you choose a language, you're also choosing a community. The programmers you'll be able to hire to work on a Java project won't be as smart as the ones you could get to work on a project written in Python. And the quality of your hackers probably matters more than the language you choose. Though, frankly, the fact that good hackers prefer Python to Java should tell you something about the relative merits of those languages." I would like to apply his advice on a commercial web application I am building (I am a strong believer in culture and community), yet this article was written in 2004, and python has increased in popularity in the recent years. How can I decided a language when taking in consideration its community, rather than the popularity? Any recommendations? Is there any language community that show dedication and passion for developing, rather than learning a language to get a Job and a paycheck?

How can I get my game to show up in the Games Explorer on Windows?

I want to create an installer for a game which allows for an icon to be put in the Games Explorer for Vista and Windows 7. I have created the GDF, then built the script for project and obtained the .h, .gdf and .rc files. But I can't compile (using Visual Studio 2010) the .rc file into an executable to be used after that in order to create the installer. I get the following error after I set the executable path: "Could not load file or assembly'Microsoft.VisualStudio.HpcDebugger.Impl, Version 10.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublickKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified." Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

...in percentage. For example 60/40 or 90/10 or 100/0. My hypothesis is that the bigger the proportion of time you spend thinking the smaller your code can be as a result (and the less time will be needed to write it down). Think more, write less, in other words. Do you think it is true? As a side note, I think in typical software companies thinking is not part of the culture anyway: you are usually supposed to be sitting there at your computer typing something. You will almost definitely be noticed by your managers if you wander about with a blank look thinking over your next steps with your code. Too bad.

My boss decided to add a "person to blame" field to every bug report. How can I convince him that it's a bad idea?

In one of the latest "WTF" moves, my boss decided that adding a "Person To Blame" field to our bug tracking template will increase accountability (although we already have a way of tying bugs to features/stories). My arguments that this will decrease morale, increase finger-pointing and would not account for missing/misunderstood features reported as bug have gone unheard. What are some other strong arguments against this practice that I can use? Is there any writing on this topic that I can share with the team and the boss? I find this sort of culture unacceptable to work in but want to try and change it before jumping ship. Any input is appreciated.

What is Causing This Memory Leak in Delphi?

I just can't figure out this memory leak that EurekaLog is reporting for my program. I'm using Delphi 2009. Here it is: Memory Leak: Type=Data; Total size=26; Count=1; The stack is: System.pas _UStrSetLength 17477 System.pas _UStrCat 17572 Process.pas InputGedcomFile 1145 That is all there is in the stack. EurekaLog is pointing me to the location where the memory that was not released was first allocated. According to it, the line in my program is line 1145 of InputGedcomFile. That line is: CurStruct0Key := 'HEAD' + Level0Key; where CurStruct0Key and Level0Key are simply defined in the procedure as local variables that should be dynamically handled by the Delphi memory manager when entering and leaving the procedure: var CurStruct0Key, Level0Key: string; So now I look at the _UStrCat procedure in the System Unit. Any help or explanation here will be much appreciated.

I chose to use Stacks and Tables before knowing Collections has immutable empty things only for Set, Map and List. Because the size of table does not change after its init: Integer[] table = new Intger[0] I can use the zero-witdh table as an empty table. The java.coccurrent pkg does not have any immutable Stack data structure. From Stack to some immutable data structure How to get immutable Stack data structure? Can I box it with list? Should I switch my current implementatios from stacks to Lists to get immutable? Which immutable data structure is Very fast with about similar exec time as Stack?

Forcing UIInterfaceOrientation changes on iPhone

I'm strugging with getting an iPhone application which requires just about every push or pop in the Nav Controller Stack to change orientation. Basically the first view is portrait, the second landscape the third portrait again (Yes I know this is less than ideal, but that's the design and I've got to implement it). Setting to link against 3.1.2 my reading of the linked articles above seems to indicate that if my portrait view pushes a view with - (BOOL)shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation:(UIInterfaceOrientation)interfaceOrientation { // Return YES for supported orientations return ((interfaceOrientation == UIInterfaceOrientationLandscapeRight) ); } Then then that view should appear rotated to landscape. What happens is it appears in its "broken" portrait form, then rotates correctly as the device is turned. If I pop the controller back to my portrait view (which has an appropriate shouldAutoRotate...) then that remains in broken landscape view until the device is returned to portrait orientation. I've also tried removing all the shouldautorotate messages, and instead forcing rotation by transforming the view. This kind of works, and I've figured out that by moving the status bar (which is actually hidden in my application) [UIApplication sharedApplication].statusBarOrientation = UIInterfaceOrientationLandscapeRight; the keyboard will appear with the correct orientation when desired. The problem with this approach is that the status bar transform is weird and ugly when you don't have a status bar - a shadow looms over the page with each change. So. What am I missing. 1) Am I wrong in thinking that in 3.1.2 (or possibly earlier) shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation should provide the desired orientation simply by pushing controllers ? 2) Is there another way of getting keyboards to appear in the correct orientation. 3) Are the undocumented API calls the way to go (please no!)

And why does it do mov eax, ebx? It seems that it generates the partial stack frame because of the mov eax, ebx. 403 error after adding javascript to masterpage for sharepoint.

I am attempting to add highslide-with-html.js from http://highslide.com/ to my masterpage. I am receiving a 403 forbidden error when I use the provided masterpage. I have placed it in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\TEMPLATE\LAYOUTS\1033. Test javascript files such as pirate.js which consists solely of alert("Arr!"); have loaded from the same directory. I have provided the code for the masterpage. UIActionSheet positioning problem

I need to display a pop with a UISwitch and a Done button when user taps on a button and save the state of the switch when the done button in the pop up is tapped. NSLog(@"Switch is on") : NSLog(@"Switch if off"); } } All this works great. I have problem with positioning. Unfortunately, I don't have a screen shot at the moment to post here. But the switch appears at the very top on the same line with the Action Sheet title and then below that is the Done button. Please someone help me how to position the switch below the Title and increase the Action Sheet size so it looks neat. I need this asap. Thanks.

UIView rotation, modal view lanscape and portrait, parent fails to render

Hi everyone, I've hit a bit of a roadblock with something that I hope that someone in here can help me out with. I'll describe the 'state of play' first, and then what the issue is, so here goes; I have a series of view controllers that are chained together with a Navigation Controller (this works just fine), All of these view controllers support portrait mode only (by design), In one of the view controllers (the 'end' one actually) the user can click a table cell to pop up a modal view controller (using presentModalViewController(...) of course) This modal view controller supports portrait and landscape modes (and this works), When the user clicks the 'Done' button on this modal view controller we pop and pass control back to the parent view controller, however; If the user is in portrait mode when they click 'Done' then the parent displays itself just fine, If the user is in landscape mode when they click 'Done' then the parent displays a totally white, blank screen (that covers the whole screen). It is as if the controller does not know how to render in landscape and just doesn't bother. I'd like to be able to have this parent view render in portrait no matter what the orientation of the phone is when the user clicks the 'Done' button. Various forum posts suggest using the UIDevice method 'setOrientation' (but this is undocumented and will get our app rejected apparently). Another suggestion was to set the 'statusBarOrientation' to portrait in the 'viewWillAppear' method but that had no effect. So I am a bit stuck! Has any encountered anything like this before? Internet Explorer 8 64bit and Selenium Not working.

I am trying to get selenium tests to run. Yet every time I try to run a tests that should run IE I get a error on line 863 of htmlutils.js It says that I should disable my popup blocker. The thing is I went to IE tools- turn of popup block. So it is disabled and I get this error. Is there something else I need to disable. I actually don't even know what version of Internet explorer it is running since I am using Windows 7 Pro 64bit version. So when I do use IE I use 64bit version but I am under the understanding if the site or something like that does not support 64bit it goes to 32bit. So not sure what I need to do it to make it work. I have some code that uses OpenXML to open up a docx file, find all mailmerge fields, and replace them with data (ignoring the datasource that may have been provided). I initially tested this against a document created in Office 2007 and it seemed to work great. We then created one in 2003 based off an Excel spreadsheet data source and saved it to 2007 docx format. When we open the file produced by my code, Word warns the user that it is going to execute some SQL, specifically "SELECT * from 'Sheet1$'". It has options of Yes/No. Selecting Yes requires I find the data source. Selecting No brings me to the document, which appears to be correct. I'm not sure why I'm now seeing this pop up. Perhaps it's due to a different data source for the 2003 document? My hope was that there was a way to delete all references to any datasources and that the pop-up wouldn't show. I found this, but it doesn't seem to work. Any suggestions?

Iphone application crashes when poping to rootController of UITabBar tab

Hello, I'm having this bug I can't figure out and it is making my head hurt. So, basically, in my iphone application I have UITabBar with some tabs each having UINavigationControllers inside. Something like this: someViewController *someController = [[someViewController alloc] myInit]; UINavigationController *someNav = [[UINavigationController alloc] initWithRootViewController:someController]; tab = [[UITabBarController alloc] init]; tab.viewControllers = [NSArray arrayWithObjects:otherNav, otherNav, evilNav, nil]; [window addSubview:tab.view]; So to reproduce my "precious" bug I go like this: click evilNav tab -> push tableListView (category list) -> push otherTableListView (category items list) -> push someOtherView (single item) -> popToRoot || popToController withindex:0 || click on evilNav tab again || pop to otherTableListView -> pop to tableListView -> crash (with no notable error) So if I go so far to someOtherView I can't go back to first tableListView (rootViewController) without application crashing. Meanwhile I can go to other tabs and then even click evilNav (when it is in otherTableListView or someOtherView state) without crashing. What could be causing this problem? (If you need I will post more code)
