  • Snap App Windows to Pre-Defined Screen Sections with Acer GridVista

    - by Asian Angel
The window snapping feature in Windows 7 and the ability to organize monitor(s) into specific gridded sections have both become popular lately. If you love the idea of having both combined in a single software then join us as we look at Acer GridVista. Note: Acer GridVista works with Windows XP, Vista, & 7. It will also work with dual monitors. Setup Acer GridVista comes in a zip file format and at first you might assume that it is portable in nature but it is not. Once you unzip the enclosed folder you will need to double click on “Setup.exe” to install the program. Acer GridVista in Action Once you have installed the program and started it up all that you will notice at first is the new “System Tray Icon”. Here you can see the “Context Menu”… The only menu command that you will likely use most of the time is the “Grid Configuration Command”. Notice that for our single monitor setup that it lists “Display 1”. The “Single Setting” is enabled by default and you can easily choose the layout that best suits your needs. The enabled layout style will always be highlighted in yellow for easy reference. For our example we chose the “Triple (primary at right)” layout style. Each section will be specifically numbered as shown here. Do not worry…the grid and numbers only appear for a moment and then become invisible again until you move an app window into that section/area of your screen. On every regular app window that you open you will notice three new buttons in the upper right corner. Here is what each of these new buttons do: Acer GridVista Extensions (Transparent, Send To Window Grid, About Acer GridVista): Viewable in a drop-down menu Lock To Grid (Enable/Disable): Enabled by default –> Note: Set to disable on a particular window to keep it free of the “grid locking function” Always On Top (Enable/Disable): Disabled by default A good look at the “Extensions Drop-Down Menu” where you can set an app window to be transparent or send it to a specific screen section on your monitor(s). If you open an app it will not automatically lock into a specific section. To lock the window into a specific section drag-and-drop the app window into the desired section. Notice the red outline and highlighted number on “Section 2” below. The red outline and highlighted number serves as an indicator that if you release the app window at that moment it will lock into the outlined/highlighted section. Now that Notepad is locked into “Section 2” you can see that it is maximized within that section. Continue to drag-and-drop your app windows into the appropriate sections as desired…apps can still be reduced to the “Taskbar” the same as before. Options These are the options available for Acer GridVista… Conclusion If you have been wanting the ability to “snap” windows and organize them into specific screen areas then Acer GridVista is definitely a program that you should try out. • See all output from commands performed inside screen

    - by user1032531
I am using screen (http://www.gnu.org/software/screen/manual/screen.html) to access my minecraft console. I created a server in /etc/init.d, and have minecraft running in the background. Then, to access the minecraft console, I just type # screen -r in bash. I can now do commands in the screen shell. The problem is if I do some command which exports a bunch of text, it exceeds the size of the screen and pushes the begging output off the page. And I cannot seem to scroll up and see it. How can I scroll back and view all the output? How can I pause the output (maybe something like more or less)?

  • Why is my metro screen getting extended to half of the second screen?

    - by maximusyoda
When I extend my desktop to the second screen, it stays fine for a few minutes, but after a while, the first metro screen stretches all the way to half of the second screen. The search bar etc stops working. The desktop itself shares fine. But the metro screen is messed up as well as the resolution. The second screen is using the recommended resolution. All I want is to have an extended screen. The problem occurs in my office Windows 8 laptop as well. Not sure what to do with it. • System reverts to 87Hz refresh rate at every startup after I have installed nvidia drivers

    - by Mohammad Kamil Nadeem
Every time the system starts the screen's refresh rate reverts to 87Hz which results in a pixelated and flickery screen which I have to manually correct every time by either selecting 60Hz as my refresh rate. I have tried "save to X configuration files" and even tried by making the changes as Root but to no avail as it again reverts to 87Hz on every system startup The Open Source Drivers are Okay for regular Unity but many games don't work on it hence I had to install the nvidia drivers. I have been facing this since the Beta Phase although this is on a fresh installation of 12.04 final release. I am also providing my Xorg.conf file just in case it might help http://paste.ubuntu.com/952196/ Also for some reason Displays shows my CRT monitor as Laptop but on open source drivers it was mentioning it as a 14" CRT only This bug is also present on Edubuntu 12.04 This is not present on Xubuntu 12.04 I had selected to install updates and 3rd party software on the install and was greeted with a correct refresh rate screen on the Boot Up. I like Xubuntu.

  • Make one monitor act like two, split in half

    - by Nathan J. Brauer
Context: Ubuntu 11.10, Unity Let's say I have a screen at resolution 1000x500. What I'd like to do is split the screen down the middle so [Unity or X or ?] acts as if there are two displays (each of 500x500). Examples: Unity will display a different toolbar (the top one) on each side of the display. If I maximize a window on the left side of the screen, it will fill the left side only. If I maximize on the right, it will fill the right. If I hit "fullscreen" in youtube (flash) or Chrome or Movie Player, it will only fill the side of the display that it's on. If it's really is impossible to do this with Unity, will it work with Gnome3 and how? A million thanks!

  • Ubuntu 12.04 freezes on suspend hp folio 13

    - by Tom O'Brien
I have ubuntu 12.04 running from a usb HDD on my hp folio 13. Everything is working, but at first the screen would only blacken when i closed the lid and didn't suspend. So, I followed this guide: https://github.com/deliciousrobots/ubuntu-hp-folio-13 after that, it sort of worked, but very unreliably. Now suspend doesn't even work and it always freeze. Usually the screen will turn black but I can still see my mouse. Sometimes my desktop background will show but the launcher wont be there or anything. Once I didn't have the menu bar on any windows or the top of the screen but the windows I had left open were still (sort of) responsive. Whats wrong? Help Thanks

  • `xcalib -i -a` controls only one of two screens - can it control both?

    - by drevicko
I am using 2 screens, and wish to invert the colors on both of them without using compiz (I'm using gnome shell). I can use xcalib -invert -alter as suggested in this question, but it only inverts one of the screens. Is there a way to specify both of them, or even which of them, using xcalib? Is there another way? With xcalib, you can specify which screen to alter with the -d (-display) or -s (-screen) options, but alas, X seems to be aware of just one screen: when I use the w command I only see one (the usual ":0") ps: this question was originally posted by k0pernikus as a comment here.

  • Can't type my username and password, random freeze at login

    - by rakesh
My netbook runs a dual OS(Windows7 & Ubuntu 12.04). After Ubuntu login screen appears, that’s it, it gets hanged, can't even move my cursor nor type my user name. I had to turn off my system and boot again. Still its not sure that it won't freeze out at login screen again, but this is the temporary solution I have to get into Ubuntu. This freezing at login screen doesn't happen every time, it happens randomly. It seems like I had to enter into Ubuntu purely based on my luck, which is quite irritating. I found many other types of login problem in Ubuntu when I googled, which were quite different from my case. So any1 kindly help me out.

  • Monitor Display issue

    - by dsiddens
When booting I will have to boot maybe 3 or 4 times to get a screen that is not displayed diagonally or is not using the full screen width. Hardware specification: HP s7727c with AMD64 and NVIDIA chipsets and Insignia 22" monitor/TV. The Ubuntu version is 9.10 Karmic. I'd like to stay current with Ubuntu on this machine, but have gone down to 9.10 to get this described functioning. I tried higher versions and could not get past the "black screen" I think this issue is connected to the NVIDIA chipset/driver problem. I am a GUI user and I don't follow the other solutions posted which make use of the command line. I suppose if the command line solution could be given without making any assumptions of the receiving person's knowledge base, then even I and others like me, could implement it. Thank you for your time and assistance. Doug

  • Why can't I log into Lubuntu after the 13.04 update, even if I know the password?

    - by gudrun
After the 13.04 update the login screen started to appear, even though I chose to automatically login in the Lubuntu install options one week ago. Even if my password and username is correct it won't login, it will just come back to the login screen. When I press ALT-CTRL-F1 at the login screen I am able to login perfectly, but I have no GUI and I'm kind of lost on that field. WHat is going? Is it just a bug? Can I downgrade?I tried several forums with different solutions but none of them worked.

  • Any screen capture software that captures webcam, microphone inputs too ?

    - by mohanr
I am going to conduct a user study. Apart from capturing the screen while the user is interacting with the system, I also want to capture the video/audio of the user. Is there any software that in addition to capturing the screen also overlays it with the webcam/microphone inputs. The goal is to capture the complete experience of the user: key/mouse interactions with the system along with their facial/vocal responses. I know that I can maybe run a screen-capture software and also run a software for capturing webcam audio/video alongside and try to sync/overlay both these streams with timestamps. But I am going to be dealing with probably several hundred hours of data. So I am looking for a tool that can streamline the process for me amap and help me keep my sanity at end of the process. Thanks,

  • Android question. Is there a link to a simple example of changing the screen brightness for an activ

    - by John
There are apparently at least three different techniques for changing screen brightness in the Android OS. Two of them no longer work post-cupcake and the third accepted technique evidently has a bug. I would like to increase screen brightness at the start of a one-view activity then turn the brightness back to the user setting at the end of the activity. No buttons, no second view or second activity. Just a maxed brightness at start and a return to original brightness setting at the end of the activity. The examples of the current technique using WindowManager.LayoutParams that I have located range from 2 lines of code WindowManager.LayoutParams lp = getWindow().getAttributes(); lp.screenBrightness = 100 / 100.0f; getWindow().setAttributes(lp); to several pages of source code and numerous activities. Is there a simple example of maxing the screen brightness at start that someone can provide a link to? Thank you for reading my question.

  • how to preform an activity at the android lock screen?

    - by John
I would like to perform an activity at the key guard screen, but the only way I can find to do so is to disable the key guard, do my activity, then re enable the key guard. This would be ok if it didn't cause the key guard screen to flash off and on (disable makes it disappear then re enable brings it back). I am wondering how I can perform an activity with it still being displayed? Kinda like how when the alarm goes off it shows a pop-up which is displayed over the key-guard screen?

  • How to make a swing app aware of screen size change?

    - by Marton Sigmond
Hi, while my swing app is running I change the size of the screen (e.g. from 1024x768 to 800x600). Is there any event I can listen to to be notified about this? Alternatively I could check the screen size in every couple of second, but the Toolkit.getScreenSize() keeps telling me the old value. How could I get the real screen size after the change? Environment: Linux (tested on SuSE ES 11 and Ubuntu 9.04) I appreciate your help. Marton

  • text size on 15.6" and 17.3" laptop screens

    - by Joshi
I'm I correct in assuming that the size of text etc will be the same on: 17.3" screen with native resolution of 1600x900 15.6" screen with native resolution of 1366x768 The DPI for screen 1 is 106; for screen 2 it's 100 which is near enough the same. So the only real difference is that I could get more text (of the same size) on each line and more lines on the 17.3" screen???? Have I understood this correctly?

  • Getting "Using two-stage rotation animation" warning with UIImagePickerController

    - by Kay
Hi, I wrote simple code to test UIImagePickerController: @implementation ProfileEditViewController - (void)viewDidLoad { [super viewDidLoad]; photoTaker_ = [[UIImagePickerController alloc] init]; photoTaker_.delegate = self; photoTaker_.sourceType = UIImagePickerControllerSourceTypeCamera; photoTaker_.showsCameraControls = NO; } - (void)viewDidAppear: (BOOL)animated { [self presentModalViewController: photoTaker_ animated: NO]; } @end And I'm getting strange warnings like the following: 2010-05-20 17:53:13.838 TestProj[2814:307] Using two-stage rotation animation. To use the smoother single-stage animation, this application must remove two-stage method implementations. 2010-05-20 17:53:13.849 TestProj[2814:307] Using two-stage rotation animation is not supported when rotating more than one view controller or view controllers not the window delegate Got any idea what this is about? • Two-Stage Rotation Warnings

    - by Kevin Sylvestre
I have an application that presents a modal UITabBarController. Each UIViewController contained in the UITabBarController implements should autorotate interface orientation. However, when I present the modal UITabBarController the following warnings appear in the console: Using two-stage rotation animation. To use the smoother single-stage animation, this application must remove two-stage method implementations. Using two-stage rotation animation is not supported when rotating more than one view controller or view controllers not the window delegate. Any ideas how to remove the warnings? Thanks.

  • iPhone hitTest broken after rotation

    - by Adam
Hi all, I have a UIView that contains a number of CALayer subclasses. I am using the following code to detect which layer a touch event corresponds to: - (void)touchesBegan:(NSSet *)touches withEvent:(UIEvent *)event { UITouch *touch = [touches anyObject]; CGPoint touchPoint = [touch locationInView:self]; NSLog(@"%@,%@",NSStringFromCGPoint(point),[self.layer hitTest:point].name); } This works fine until the device is rotated. When the device is rotated all current layers are removed from the superlayer, and new CALayers are created to fit the new orientation. The new layers are correctly inserted and viewable in the correct orientation. After the rotation the hitTest method consistently returns nil when clearly clicking on the newly created layers and registers for locations of layers which are incorrect. The coordinates of the hit test are correct, but no layers are found. Am I missing a function call or something after handling the rotation? Cheers, Adam

  • UITabBarController rotation problem with popViewControllerAnimated and selectedIndex (iPhone SDK)

    - by rjobidon
Hi! This is a very important auto rotate issue and easy to reproduce. My application has a UITabBarController. Each tab is a UINavigationController. Auto rotation is handled with normal calls to shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation and didRotateFromInterfaceOrientation. The interface rotates normally until I call UIViewController.popViewControllerAnimated and change UITabBarController.selectedIndex. Steps to reproduce: Create a demo Tab Bar Application. Add the following code to the App Delegate .h file: #import <UIKit/UIKit.h> @interface TestRotationAppDelegate : NSObject { UIWindow *window; UITabBarController *tabBarController; } @property (nonatomic, retain) IBOutlet UIWindow *window; @property (nonatomic, retain) IBOutlet UITabBarController *tabBarController; -(void)doAction; @end // Redefine the interface to cach rotation messages @interface UITabBarController (TestRotation1AppDelegate) @end Add the following code to the App Delegate .m file: #import "TestRotationAppDelegate.h" @implementation TestRotationAppDelegate @synthesize window; @synthesize tabBarController; -(BOOL)application:(UIApplication *)application didFinishLaunchingWithOptions:(NSDictionary *)launchOptions { [window addSubview:tabBarController.view]; [window makeKeyAndVisible]; return YES; } -(BOOL)shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation:(UIInterfaceOrientation)interfaceOrientation { return YES; } -(void)dealloc { [tabBarController release]; [window release]; [super dealloc]; } @end @implementation UITabBarController (TestRotation1AppDelegate) -(void)viewDidLoad { [super viewDidLoad]; // Add a third tab and push a view UIViewController *view1 = [[UIViewController alloc] init]; view1.title = @"Third"; UINavigationController *nav = [[UINavigationController alloc] initWithRootViewController:view1]; NSMutableArray *array = [[NSMutableArray alloc] init]; [array addObjectsFromArray:self.viewControllers]; [array addObject:nav]; self.viewControllers = array; // Push view2 inside the third tab UIViewController *view2 = [[UIViewController alloc] init]; [nav pushViewController:view2 animated:YES]; // Create a button to pop view2 UIButton *button = [UIButton buttonWithType:UIButtonTypeRoundedRect]; button.frame = CGRectMake(50, 50, 220, 38); [button setTitle:@"Pop this view" forState:UIControlStateNormal]; [button addTarget:self action:@selector(doAction) forControlEvents:UIControlEventTouchUpInside]; [view2.view addSubview:button]; } -(void) doAction { // ROTATION PROBLEM BEGINS HERE // Remove one line of code and the problem doesn't occur. [self.selectedViewController popViewControllerAnimated:YES]; self.selectedIndex = 0; } -(BOOL)shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation:(UIInterfaceOrientation)interfaceOrientation { return YES; } @end The interface auto rotates normally until you tap the button on tab #3. • Perspective Rotation about Y axis

    - by N.A.Reddy
Hello Experts, I have a 2D image and I want to create a anaglyph image for this single 2D image. To do this I need to create Left and Right views. I will considar my 2D image as Left view and I want to create Right View now. I came to know that the perspective rotation (about Y axis) and perspective skews will give the right image. I know that the perspective projection is related to 3D. Basically I am new to 3D programming. Can you plz explain how to do perspective rotation abuout Y-axis. And how can I apply this to my 2D image.I am using C++. Thank you verymuch N.A.Reddy.

  • formula for best approximation for center of 2D rotation with small angles

    - by RocketSurgeon
This is not a homework. I am asking to see if problem is classical (trivial) or non-trivial. It looks simple on a surface, and I hope it is truly a simple problem. Have N points (N = 2) with coordinates Xn, Yn on a surface of 2D solid body. Solid body has some small rotation (below Pi/180) combined with small shifts (below 1% of distance between any 2 points of N). Possibly some small deformation too (<<0.001%) Same N points have new coordinates named XXn, YYn Calculate with best approximation the location of center of rotation as point C with coordinates XXX, YYY. Thank you
