• For some reason I can't get ATI FGLRX Drivers to support 3D acceleration on Ubuntu 12.04

  I have an ATI 5650m and I've had 0 issues with 3D Acceleration in the past. I had to reinstall Ubuntu entirely, and now with the 12.6 drivers I get - One or more tools required for installation cannot be found on the system I can't seem to solve this issue. I installed the FGLRX drivers through the "alternate command line" guide on the Ubuntu Wiki including the instructions for getting 3D support. They seem to install but I get an error with vainfo libva: VA-API version 0.32.0 Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0". libva: va_getDriverName() returns 0 libva: Trying to open /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/fglrx_drv_video.so libva error: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/fglrx_drv_video.so init failed libva: va_openDriver() returns -1 vaInitialize failed with error code -1 (unknown libva error),exit I have tried help here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2014440 It's a bit frustrating as I can do basically nothing without 3D support. I can't use super + direction or super + w or even configure the Unity bar to be 32px. If anyone could help I'd appreciate that.

  I've followed steps in this guide. Also I've fixed switchable graphics bug, using this guide (STEP 2). I've tried to add 'LIBVA_DRIVER_NAME=xvba LIBVA_DRIVERS_PATH=/usr/lib/va/drivers' to /etc/environment and rebooted system, but the result was the same. PLEASE HELP! :) Thanks! :]

• IsNumeric() Broken? Only up to a point.

  In SQL Server, probably the best-known 'broken' function is poor ISNUMERIC() . The documentation says 'ISNUMERIC returns 1 when the input expression evaluates to a valid numeric data type; otherwise it returns 0. ISNUMERIC returns 1 for some characters that are not numbers, such as plus (+), minus (-), and valid currency symbols such as the dollar sign ($).'Although it will take numeric data types (No, I don't understand why either), its main use is supposed to be to test strings to make sure that you can convert them to whatever numeric datatype you are using (int, numeric, bigint, money, smallint, smallmoney, tinyint, float, decimal, or real). It wouldn't actually be of much use anyway, since each datatype has different rules. You actually need a RegEx to do a reasonably safe check. The other snag is that the IsNumeric() function  is a bit broken. SELECT ISNUMERIC(',')This cheerfully returns 1, since it believes that a comma is a currency symbol (not a thousands-separator) and you meant to say 0, in this strange currency.  However, SELECT ISNUMERIC(N'£')isn't recognized as currency.  '+' and  '-' is seen to be numeric, which is stretching it a bit. You'll see that what it allows isn't really broken except that it doesn't recognize Unicode currency symbols: It just tells you that one numeric type is likely to accept the string if you do an explicit conversion to it using the string. Both these work fine, so poor IsNumeric has to follow suit. SELECT  CAST('0E0' AS FLOAT)SELECT  CAST (',' AS MONEY) but it is harder to predict which data type will accept a '+' sign. Almost, but not quite. The bug is that it doesn't understand Unicode currency characters such as the euro or franc which are actually valid when used in the CAST function. You can only get part of the way with the LIKE wildcards, because you cannot specify quantifiers. You'll need full-blown Regex strings like these ..[-+]?\b[0-9]+(\.[0-9]+)?\b #INT or REAL[-+]?\b[0-9]{1,3}\b #TINYINT[-+]?\b[0-9]{1,5}\b #SMALLINT.. but you'll get even these to fail to catch numbers out of range.So is IsNumeric() an out and out rogue function? Not really, I'd say, but then it would need a damned good lawyer.

  I have a test server that is running Ubuntu Server in a windows network. Networking is configured as follows auto eth0 iface eth0 inet dhcp hostname ca the command cat /etc/hostname returns ca. But when I use the command host 10.49.156.196 (its current IP address) from another machine on the network, it returns as follows: 196.156.49.10.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer owner-pc.xxxxx.xxx I can access the machine via SSH and browser using IP address, but not by name ca Any suggestions? I tried installing samba/nmbd as suggested in another post, but to no avail.

• Problem installing libva (VAAPI), vainfo fails

  I'm following a wiki on how to make VLC use the GPU in the Core i3 integrated graphics chipset, but I'm stuck at one of the first steps, installing VAAPI. I installed libva1 and vainfo by using "sudo apt-get install libva1 vainfo", but when I run vainfo it says libva: libva version 0.32.0 libva: va_getDriverName() returns 0 libva: Trying to open /usr/lib/dri/i965_drv_video.so libva: va_openDriver() returns -1 vaInitialize failed with error code -1 (unknown libva error),exit It should say VAProfileH264High : VAEntrypointVLD VAProfileVC1Advanced : VAEntrypointVLD according to the wiki. /usr/lib/dri/i965_drv_video.so doesn't exist in my system, but I installed libva1 with apt-get.

• Unit testing multiple conditions in an IF statement

  I have a chunk of code that looks something like this: function bool PassesBusinessRules() { bool meetsBusinessRules = false; if (PassesBusinessRule1 && PassesBusinessRule2 && PassesBusinessRule3) { meetsBusinessRules= true; } return meetsBusinessRules; } I believe there should be four unit tests for this particular function. Three to test each of the conditions in the if statement and ensure it returns false. And another test that makes sure the function returns true. Question: Should there actually be ten unit tests instead? Nine that checks each of the possible failure paths. IE: False False False False False True False True False And so on for each possible combination. I think that is overkill, but some of the other members on my team do not. The way I look at it is if BusinessRule1 fails then it should always return false, it doesn't matter if it was checked first or last.

• WCF Publish/Subscribe and using callbacks to send data to specific users

  Hello thanks for looking, I'm working on a project at the moment and have become a little stuck. I'm creating a client server app, which allows a client to subscribe to the server to have messages forwarded to it. The issue I'm having is that when the client subscribes I wish for them to only recieve updates that relate to them. The system basically passes messages from a SQL server DB which the server monitors. When a new message is recieved the server should only forward the message to the clients that it applys to, based on whos logged on the client machine. I've had a look and found code samples which sign up for messages to be broadcast across all clients who have subscribed, but not any that show how to identify individual clients and if messages apply to them. If anyone could help or point me in the right direction it would be appreciated. • I can't connect new Windows 7 PC to Mac iBook with OS 10.3.9

  Help ! I have an old iBook wired to a router and a new PC linking wirelessly to same router. On the Mac I have 'seen' the PC but not been able to connect to it. On the PC, the Network and Sharing Centre lists 'IBOOK'. When I click on this, 'Windows Security' asks me to 'Enter Network Password', asking for User name and password. I have tried: 1) The user name and password of my admin account on the iBook. This returns a 'logon failure' message but lists the user name as [NAME_OF_PC\User Name], suggesting it was looking for the user name of the PC, not the Mac. 2) The user name and password of my account on the PC. This also returns a 'logon failure' message. 3) The user name of my account on the PC and the 'homegroup password' given to me by Windows when setting up the PC. This also returns a 'logon failure' message. Today I've tried connecting the two machines via a patch cable - still no joy. Can anyone help? It is 20 years since I wrestled with any OS other than Mac, and 10 years since I've done mich wrangling with the Macs, so please assume no knowledge! Thanks in advance,

  I have the fairly common task of finding who has files open on our Linux (Ubuntu ) file server in our Windows environment. We use Samba on the network and I use Putty from my workstation to establish a shell window to run bash scripts. I have been using something like this to find what files are open: (this returns a list of process ids with each open file) Robert:$ sudo lsof | grep "/srv/office/some/folder" Then, I follow up with something like this to show who owns the process: (this returns the name of the machine on the network using the IP4 protocol who owns the process) Robert:$ sudo lsof -p 27295 | grep "IPv4" Now I know the windows client who has a file open and can take action from there. As you can tell this is not difficult but time consuming. I would prefer to have a windows application I can run that would just give me what I want. So, I have been thinking about creating some process I can run on Linux that listens on a port and then returns a clean list of all open files with the IP address of the host who has the file open. Then, a small windows client application that can send the request on the port. It seems like this should be a very common need but I can not find anything like this that has been done before. Any suggestions?

• nginx error page and internal directives not working as expected

  I'd like to setup my nginx server to return a specific error page on HTTP 50x status codes, and I'd like this page to be unavailable by a direct request from users (e.g., http//mysite/internalerror). For that, I'm using nginx's internal directive, but I must be missing something, as when I put that directive on my /internalerror location, nginx returns a custom 404 error (which isn't even my own 404 error page) when a page crashes. • Google MAIL not arriving - relay not allowed

  I have a server with sendmail, hosting my domain mind-zone.nl, i changed the MX records to point to the server. When I use Hotmail or any other client the email arrives and everything is fine. ONLY mail from GMAIL server is bounced and gmail returns "relay denied". I have set all the virtual server host settings etc, from command line I can send mails as well, hotmail works, etc. Just not gmail. The strange thing is, this is what gmail returns: Look at the lower part: "Received by" it returns some IP address which is not mine and has absolutely nothing with my domain. While when I do a NSLOOKUP and change to google's DNS server it will state that the IP Address for my domain is correctly pointing at my server. Technical details of permanent failure: Google tried to deliver your message, but it was rejected by the recipient domain. We recommend contacting the other email provider for further information about the cause of this error. • How to setup named instances using StructureMap profiles?

  I've done quite a bit of googling and searching here on SO, but couldn't find a similar question or answer. In typical SM configuration you can add multiple named instances for a single PluginType: ForRequestedType<IFoo>() .AddInstances( x => { x.OfConcreteType<FooA>().WithName( "FooA" ); x.OfConcreteType<FooB>().WithName( "FooB" ); } ); No problem there. The problem is that I can't do the same when creating a profile. Most examples explaining how to use profiles use the For<>() method of the passed ProfileExpression: CreateProfile( "Default", p => { p.For<IFoo>().UseConcreteType<FooC>(); } ); I can't seem to find a way to add multiple named instances for the same PluginType as you can do above with regular configuration. The only other method available through ProfileExpression is Type<>(), but I'm not sure if it can be used for this purpose. Edit: I tried to use Type<>() instead of For<>() and it seems to be taking me in the right direction, but I bumped into another problem. • SQLCMD Syntax error when running script that runs fine in management studio

  When I run the this select '$(''test'')' in SQL Management Studio 2008 it returns $('test') When I run sqlcmd -S SERVER -E -d DATABASE -q "select "$(''test'')" on the command line it returns Sqlcmd: Error: Syntax error at line 1 near command '''. If I remove the dollar sign it works. Is the "$" a special character? Is this a sqlcmd bug? How can I change the script to get the desired result.
