  Hello experts, I'm very much a beginner when it comes to Ubuntu and I've been learning the ropes by diving in and writing a (backend-language independent) web app framework that relies on apache, some clever mod_rewrites, Ubuntu permissions, groups, and users. One thing that really annoys my inner clean-freak is that there are loads of users and groups that are created when Ubuntu is installed that are never used (Or so I think). Since I'm just running a simple web app server, I would like to know: What users/groups can I remove?   Since upgrade from 12.04 to 12.10 I can't connect to internet using mobile broadband modem Huawei e173. It worked earlier without problems and now it seems to be properly recognized (at least its connections appear in network manager applet), and after selecting connection manually it starts connection procedure. After about 20 seconds it returns to state disconnected. • Poor System performance on my machine running Ubuntu 12.04(Beta 2 updated to the present moment)

  Why is it that my system dies when multitasking(it is happening from 11.10) on Ubuntu11.10(Unity), Kubuntu 11.10(KDE) and Deepin Linux which is based on 11.10(Gnome-Shell) The thing is that I thought with 12.04 I would get performance like I used to get on 11.04 on which everything used to run fine without any lag or hiccups. The same lagging(Browser starts to stutter, increased delay in the launching of dash and applications)is happening on 12.04 http://i.imgur.com/YChKB.png and http://i.imgur.com/uyXLA.png . I believe that my system configuration is sufficient for running Ubuntu as you can check here http://paste.ubuntu.com/929734/ . I had the Google voice and chat plugin installed on 12.04 so someone suggested that I should remove that and see if the performance improves but no such respite(I am having this on multiple operating system based on Ubuntu 11.10 as I have mentioned above). On a friends suggestion Ran Memory Test through Partition Magic and my system passed that fine. One thing more that I would like to know is that why when I have 2Gb Ram and 2.1GB swap does my system starts lag and run poorly when Ram consumption goes 500+. If you require anymore information I will gladly provide it.

• Feed Reader's - Looking for some suggestions

  I am doing my best to make it a point to keep an eye on some blogs of people in my industry, and am looking for a good feed reader. I use chrome. I live in chrome, and if I am not in Chrome, I am using xterm. Yet, I do get my tweets in Pidgin and do all my talking discussion from that. Maybe it makes sense to integrate something in that? I see web feed readers as a bit too distant to make good use of it (eg, have to open a page, and less 'in your face'). Although, I am a big fan of google stuff and use google apps and google voice and google cals and google docs, etc.. So how is feedburner? I like to preserver time. It'd be interesting if I could read my feeds offline on my laptop or ChromeOS CR-48 with offline websites? Well, would love to hear what you guys are doing and suggest.

• Streamline Active Directory account creation via automated web site

  In my company we have high employee turnover, and hence our helpdesk receives about a dozen requests per week for new Active Directory accounts. Currently, we receive these requests simply via e-mail or voice-mail, and rarely do we have all of the information necessary to create the account. I would like to find a web application that can be used by a manager or supervisor to formalize the requests they make for AD accounts for new employees under their command. Ideally, the application would prompt for all of necessary information, and allow the helpdesk to review the requests and approve or deny each one. If approved, the application would take care of creating the account and send an e-mail to the manager. I have found several application on the Internet that handle self-service account management (i.e., password resets or update contact info), which is also nice to have, but nothing that streamlines the new account request and creation part. Can anyone make suggestions on such an application? Thanks.

• I'm scared for my technical phone interview for an internship!

  [EDIT 2.0 ]Hello everyone. This is my second phone interview for a development internship. My very first one was okay, but I didn't get my dream internship. Now, I'm facing fears about this upcoming interview. My fears include the following: I'm 19 years old. The thought of 2 lead developers interviewing me makes me think that I'll know so little of what they'd want me to know. Like they will expect so much. I'm a junior having these panic attacks that I did not get in the other internship. I have a little voice saying "You didn't get the other one. What makes you think you'll get this one?". I'm scared that I'll freeze up, forget everything I know, and stutter like an idiot. I'm still traumatized by the last one, because I really really wanted that internship, and I even studied very hard for it. When I was in the interview, I was so nervous I couldn't think clearly. As a result, I didn't do as well as I know I could have. The minute I hung up, I even thought of a better solution to the interview question! Any tips for a soon-to-be intern (hopefully!)? Thank you! Shockingly, they failed to sell a single one. Read on to be dumbfounded by how ahead of (and out of touch with) its time the Honeywell Kitchen Computer was. Wired delves into the history of the device, including how difficult it was to use: Now try to imagine all that in late 1960s kitchen. The thought that an average person, like a housewife, could have used it to streamline chores like cooking or bookkeeping was ridiculous, even if she aced the two-week programming course included in the $10,600 price tag.   I'm one of the believers that think that we will hit the technological singularity sooner or later. Then the question is if any profession will be unaffected by changes that will come. In the end it will be we programmers that will implement the first self-aware AI. How will technological singularity affect us programmer? What is your professional opinion regarding technological singularity? EDIT: By self-aware I refer to an entity that questions and seek answers, able to analyze and solve problem. Artificial neural network is branch in mathematics/statistics with many widely used algorithms. The algorithms are applied where recognition of data is needed. For example hidden Markov model is used for voice recognition. Another well-known area is business intelligence and data mining. Today algorithms are self-learning. That is a bit of AI what many never think of. Let an ultraintelligent machine be defined as a machine that can far surpass all the intellectual activities of any man however clever. Since the design of machines is one of these intellectual activities, an ultraintelligent machine could design even better machines; there would then unquestionably be an ‘intelligence explosion,’ and the intelligence of man would be left far behind. • Microphone - static background noise suppression

  My soundcard is Realtek ALC 892. On Windows 7 I use official Realtek drivers, on Linux I use PulseAudio (on Ubuntu 13.10). On both Windows and Linux, when I enable microphone boost +30db (required because my microphone is quiet), I get very annoying and loud background noise (I also confirmed the background noise with Audacity on both systems). However, Windows Realtek drivers have noise suppression option which works (after enabling it, Audacity shows no background noise and my ears also confirm that there is no background noise). My question is how can I enable background noise suppression in ALSA/PulseAudio? Is there any module I can install or maybe there is a setting for it that can be enabled in config file? I can't find solution for it and this is the only thing that prevents me from switching to Linux completely - as I talk using microphone a lot and on Windows the Realtek software removes the background noise completely and PulseAudio doesn't remove it, which means the recorded voice on Linux is very bad. I know I could buy better soundcard and microphone, but as I said, Windows Realtek drivers remove the noise on software level in real time (ie no noise when talking on TeamSpeak3/Steam/whatever voip programme) so I hope that there is such option on Linux as well.   I'm not looking to use boost::asio, it is overly complex for my needs. I'm building a game that is cross platform, for desktop, iPhone and Android. I found a library called ENet which is pretty much what I need, but it uses UDP which does not seem to support encryption and a few other things. Given that the game is an event driven card game, TCP seems like the right fit. However, all I have found is WINSOCK / berkley sockets and bost::asio. • USB microphone very quiet in Windows 7 64bit [migrated]

  My microphone input is very quiet. I record my voice and the recording comes out very faint. I can barely see the level indicator move when I'm 4 inches away, only when I'm 0.5 inches away does it pick up well enough. • Combine Multiple Audio Files into a single higher-quality audio File

  BACKGROUND My team gave a demo to a large audience - we recorded the audio of the demo in multiple locations in the room (3) the audio was recorded using cheap laptop microphones I was not involved in the recording of the audio or the demo Both audio files suck in some form the first one is of a recording near the speaker - which clearly gets his voice but the the audience is audience is muffled - also this one is slightly noisy The second recording was done in the middle of the audience - it gets the audience questions clearly but actually gets the speaker rather sometimes well and sometimes poorly (not all the speakers spoke loudly enough to be heard) MY QUESTION Is there any techinque or software which can be used to merge these audio files in such a way that the best qualities of each are preserved. I am NOT asking now to simply merge them together in one track - I've already done that in Audacity and it is certainly better - what I am looking for could be considered closer to how HDR images are created - multiple exposures combined into an enhanced new version which is not simply an average of the inputs. NOTE Am not an "Audio" guy - just a normal user

  Content Highlights Our Application Composer series had fresh articles on the related internal data model and lots more on Groovy, including how to manipulate your data and a useful table showing you when and where groovy scripting can be used. For those just getting started with Fusion Applications user security, this article gave some handy examples to get your going. Jani's Java Cloud Service series continued strongly, with examples of integration using ADFbc, a Web Service Proxy client, and the ADF Data Control. From Other Teams The Oracle A-Team provided a broad set of articles during May, with various topics related to Fusion Applications including patching and performance management for on-premises deployments, and generic content on both integration and data extraction via web services. As part of their presentation to Oracle Israel User Group, our AppsUX colleagues explained the fresh new type of interface to Oracle Sales, through the voice mobile apps. This was in addition to demonstrations of the newer Release 8 Simplified UI customization options. Finally Angelo, our colleague in Platform Technical Services, explained in his blog how to use the findCriteria element included in all Oracle Sales web services to reduce the data returned, making response payloads much more specific, lightweight and therefore usable.   Originally posted on: http://geekswithblogs.net/Erik/archive/2013/06/29/153290.aspx I've been staring at the computer for a few minutes now and I honestly don't know what to write.  First I thought of writing about myself, where I was born, where I studied, where I am now... but that seems shallow.  Now that I thought about it.  I'd rather not talk about who I am because it seems irrelevant right now.  What I really want to say is..I'm sad.  Been like this for quite some time now.Nobody knows I'm sad.I tried telling my wife but I guess she didn't think it was serious.  We were having a fight when I told her so she probably thought I was just making up an excuse for my behavior.  And besides, she's not the kind of person who'd put my interests before hers especially when she's got lots of things on her mind.I'm not sad every single day.  Some days I'm perfectly fine.  I actually have no idea when I'd feel sad.  It just happens. I'd wake up cheerful and then before I go to bed I already feel depressed.  I have no idea what triggers it.  On the bed, I'd turn my back to my wife, curl up into a fetal position and start sobbing silently. Awful.  Maybe you're wondering now what's the cause of all this.My grandma passed away and I haven't completely  come to terms with that fact.  I long to see her, talk to her and hold her... but I can't do that anymore because she's gone.  I will never be able to hear her voice and feel her touch again.  To make matters worse, the only person whom I wish would stay beside me whenever I'm feeling miserable and dejected is never around.  She's either working late or out with her friends.  Such is my life at the moment.  I doubt it will improve anytime soon.

  Codeplex is my favorite site. CodePlex is Microsoft’s free open source project hosting site. You can create projects to share with the world, collaborate with others on their projects, and download open source software. It is great place to find so many open source project available to explore. All the softwares are free and open source. I often go there at intervals to check what is new in SQL Server field as well on other technologies. Yesterday when I visited it, I had nice surprise as it has total makeover and looks very decent as well elegant at the same time. I have noticed that when I talk about Codeplex is user community, not everybody knows about it. The quickest way I explain what is codeplex is that I start naming few of the projects which are available there and suddenly I start noticing a few hands going up knowing the projects. This is indirect way to prove that many of us know CodePlex usability but do not pay special attention to what it is actually. Let me name a few popular projects of the CodePlex here.   Hi all, I don't know if this is the correct place to answer this question, but here it goes. I have been googling for a cheap email to sip voicemail service. That is because I have got a Linksys/Cisco SPA-941 phone which has a led which will light up when a new message comes in inbox(somebody calls me). So what I want is the following. I want the e-mail(title only is enough) recorded(By computer voice) and sent to my phone which I can playback when the led lights up. • Facebook Stories for Retailers

  Getting people to "like" a brand is important because it opens the door to a possible B2C relationship. Once a person likes that brand, the brand can post to their newsfeed with promotions, announcements, and surveys. At least for me, I "hide" the noisy brands and just monitor the ones that keep posts under 4 times a week. I see lots of people, especially with fashion brands, comment on postings at which point the posting is seen by their network. A metric I've heard (but not verified) is that for every person that comments, ten of their friends see the original posting. That's a pretty cheap way to communicate to potential customers in a viral way. Over at mainstreet.com they compiled the a list of the top liked retailers on Facebook as of Feb 1, 2011. They are listed below: 19,414,892 Starbucks 11,302,939 Victoria's Secret 7,925,184 Zara 7,032,398 McDonald's 6,117,222 H&M 5,400,586 Taco Bell 4,665,760 Subway 4,494,849 Lacoste 4,185,570 Hollister 3,973,181 Forever 21 So I guess the public likes their fast-food and fashion. To take this to the next level, Facebook is now displaying Sponsored Stories, which I saw for the first time on my page this weekend. I found this picture at the Wall Blog that depicits Sponsored Stories very well. Over on the right-hand column of a person's page, where they see advertisements and such, Facebook will post stories involving their network of friends and their interaction with sponsored brands. Now their "likes" can suddenly become your ads. "Jessica and Philip like Starbucks. What are you waiting for?" This is another great way to take messages viral by accessing social graphs. As usual there will be a certain level of outcry from privacy advocates, but given the other more iniquitous issues, I believe this will fall by the wayside. Retailers should consider using Sponsored Stories to increase their Likes, and thus increase their voice in the social world.

  Today I've seen the following pattern: you have an object A and an object B. Object B accepts a pointer to A at its constructor. Once B is created, there's a method B.doCalc() that performs a calculation (internally using A's information). The result is obtained with method B.getResult(). In order to perform another calculation, A is modified, and B.doCalc() is called again. What is your opinion on this choice ? I would have designed it differently, but I want to hear your voice. Edit : note that my main objection is to modify A to have a different result from B, without touching B. Although similar, I think that just this discipline expresses a much better feeling of what's going on. Instead of a = new A a.whatever = 5 b = new B(a) b.doCalc() res = b.getResult() a.whatever = 6 b.doCalc() res = b.getResult() You get the a pointer object from b itself. a = new A a.whatever = 5 b = new B(a) b.doCalc() res = b.getResult() a = b.getAPointer() a.whatever = 6 b.doCalc() res = b.getResult() because it makes more explicit the fact that a is taken from b and then modified. I still don't like it, though...
