  I am working as python developer and i work with djnago. I also do some web scrapping and building spiders and bots. Now from there i want to make my move to Business intelligence. I just want to know how can i move into that field. because as companies are not going to hire me in that field directly , i just want to know how can i make transistions. I was thinking of first work as Database developer in sql and then i can see futher. But i want from you guys so that i can start learning that stuff so that i can chnage jobs keeping that in mind. here in my area there are plent of jobs in all area but i need to know hoe to transitio and what thing i should learn before making that transition. Here JObs are plenty so if i know my stuff , getting job is piece of cake becaus ethey don't ahve any persons. same jobs keep getting advertised for months and months

• Totem streams only certain video from iphone

  I recently installed a plug-in for Totem movie player. This allows the app to receive and play AirPlay-streamed video from iphone to totem player: http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2011/01/airplay-video-playback-comes-to-totem Actually this works fine with youtube videos. But when it comes to other apps in iPhone (such as Digital TV App) the streaming does not work. In the app I can choose Totem Player, but Totem Player itself stays empty, i.e. nothing will be streamed. As mentioned choosing Totem Player for youtube video works fine. Do you guys have any idea what makes the difference that it works only for youtube?

• Recovering domain name from a person I can't find

  I have a problem with one domain and I have no idea how to go about it. I am volunteering for a small charity in Sheffield (UK), more specifically I am redoing their website. A while ago (few years) there was one guy who made that website for them, sorted out a free hosting with another charity, bought domain name etc. Since the domain name is registered in his name, and he disappeared and we have no way of finding/contacting him, we can't move it to different hosting or do virtually nothing about it. Somehow the domain is being renewed every year, we know which domain registration service provider it is registered with, we know the guys name, and that's about it. How would we go about re-registering that domain in the charity's name, instead of that guy, is that at all possible? If we happen to get in touch with him, what should we ask for? • Transfer domains without disrupting local email server

  Perhaps I am thinking about this wrong, but maybe some of you guys can help me on this one. I have a client who currently has a domain from network solutions and is hosted via GoDaddy. Additionally, he his has email service with GoDaddy as well, but it seems to be forwarded to his local server at work. How can I transfer hosting accounts without disrupting email service (or at least temporarily)?   Here's a quick update. I was down at a nice reception at the hotel for the conference speakers when a door is violently thrown open and a guys goes running through and down the hall. Following closely behind was a security guard. I immediately took off running after both of them. We tore down a long hallway and out the door of the hotel into the street. I had caught up to the security guard, but the thief had put a little distance between himself and the guard. The guard gave up the chase. • ban an IP temporarily after x-many incorrect password attempts

  My new web server got hacked (sigh). I have physical access to my machine (in the near future). It seems like the only changes was a new user account and a borked sudoers file. It seems as though the password was discovered by dictionary searching (I didn't pick it). After I fix these problems (or do a full reinstall?) I want to add a mechanism to ban an IP (for maybe 24 hours or some time limit) after getting the password wrong x number of times, but I'm not a unix sysadmin or anything, so I'm not really sure where to get started. The machine is running Lucid Lynx, from an Ubuntu minimal installation. Thanks,I appreciate your help guys. Hopefully this is the right place for this question.

  The more I learn about programming, the more things I see that could be improved by a great deal. Often, a companies process management is total SWAG or they have Frames based websites written recently, .NET 1.1 based code, no separation of concerns, poor quality control...I could go on and on and on... Projects can succeed, but there tends to be so much waste I am amazed at how much time and money a company can throw away. I've seen it happen at several companies. So is it that ignorance truly is bliss? UPDATE Question "How is it that top developers (I don't mean like Jon Skeet level, I mean guys who are dedicated enough to hit a forum and try for self-improvement) even want to code anymore after they see the often insurmountable sociological and technical problems they are told to fix, but then scolded for doing so? Since I've never been in that line of work before, I would like to know what it is like. Get inside your heads, for instance. My first thought was (don't hate me) a few patch cables. I don't know if you guys actually need these often or anything. What are some similar things that you like or need for your lives at work. Small incidentals less than $10 are preferred, like Coffee or a notebook, screwdrivers. Et cetera.

  Hi all, I've been annoyed by this fingers ache for quite a long time, my fingers ache because of too much mouse clicking during office hour plus play games after work. I forget game for a while and my fingers are getting better, but still my right pointing finger would feel pressure when I click the mouse. I haven't go to a doctor because I afraid the fee would be high and he would just suggest me too get rest for the fingers, also, I don't know what kind of doctor should I go and see. My fingers get less pressure if I use my expensive deathadder ( what a shame, I bought this for gaming, but now I use it for rest ) at home because its buttons are softer, however I cannot have such expensive mouse at my office because I am afraid people would steal it. I use some trick when I am using the mouse such as single-click open a file, adding more shortcuts at desktop for common jobs, do you guys have some other tips for me? Thank you.

• Best practices for managing deployment of code from dev to production servers?

  I am hoping to find an easy tool or method, that allow's managing our code deployment. Here are the features I hope this solution has: Either web-based or batch file, that given a list of files, will communicate to our production server, to backup those files in different folders, and zip them and put them in a backup code folder. Then it records the name, date/time, and purpose of the deployment. Then it sends the files to their proper spot on the production server. I don't want too complex an interface to doing the deployment's because then they might never use it. Or is what I am asking for too unrealistic? I just know that my self-discipline isn't perfect, and I'd rather have a tool I can rely on to do what needs to be done, then my own memory of what exact steps I have to take every time. How do you guys, make sure everything get's deployed correctly, and have easy rollback in case of any mistakes?

  Hey guys, is it just me or is the categorization of developer levels highly subjective? I get the feeling that every company tries to hire experienced developers as juniors because they don't know $technology. For example my own career: I switched technologies a couple of times, while sticking to java as a programming language. For example I first worked for 3 years using JavaSE technologies, the next company I worked for hired me as junior because I didn't have JavaEE experience - while still selling me as professional level to customers (I work in consulting). The next company hired me again as junior because I didn't have SAP experience - they mostly work with SAP Java technologies which is definitely a niche. Still, they are selling all their technology consultants for exactly the same rate while paying them significantly different wages. Now when switching jobs again I feel like this whole thing is going to start all over again because I don't have Spring experience or Oracle knowledge. tl;dr = is my observation totally off base that companies are just using these categorizations as means to keep down wages?

  I am a Asp.Net/C# developer, I develop few projects in my spare time. I try to utilize my time as much as I can. I have been working for past 7 months. Suddenly these days I am a bit worried about learning the new stuff that is there for me as a programmer. I develop in my spare time so I don't get enough time to read books or blogs. So my question to some of you guys is how should I plan to learn new things, should I at least dedicate two-three evenings for new stuff, maybe ebooks while travelling is a good option too. How do you people plan to learn,should I also start to develop with whatever I learnt? As far as learning is concerned, should I just pick up the basics and then implement it or I should seek deeper understanding of the subject?

• Transiltion from maintenance programing to design

  What to do guys do develop a design for a s/w for a given set of requirements? I like many people joined a Semiconductor MNC and got stuck in maintenance for quite a couple of years. My work was usually changing a lines of code for windows drivers supplied by my company or a couple of small script (style like) C programs for validating h/w. As a result I developed the bad habit of 'programming by coincidence'. I have not developed the ability for designing tools/programs from scratch. I was the only s/w member of the local team and thus some grunt work from the well established other site of the company came to be done by me. Now I have moved to a different company and thus finding developing from scratch very difficult. How do I unlearn my bad habit and develop this ability of designing s/w and then coding it ?

• apt-fast for ubuntu 14.04?

  I just upgraded to ubuntu 14.04 from ubuntu 12.04 (Which I loved) and now, I cant install apt-fast. My net connection is very slow and I want to download using apt-fast but whenever I add the apt-fast ppa and update and try to install it, It says package apt-fast not found How do I fix this? thank you. I really appreciate The effort made by askubuntu (Which includes you awesome people ;)) To help me. My problem has already been answered. Here is a screenshot of my software sources. I was wondering what other languages I would need to learn and also what kinda development tools I should use. Also, what would be the best type of language to write a website like this. • Calendar like tool for managing multiple clients simultaneously?

  I've tried several systems to keep my clients requests / work organized, but somehow they still fall through the cracks. I don't like the idea of a bug tracker-like site for every client (I would not check them all). Ideally, it's all in one page but separated by client. What systems do you guys use? I'm about to just use a spreadsheet with columns for clients. Just curious if there's something better out there :) I've seen smartsheet in action which is basically a really nice spreadsheet that shows bars of time between things that are due. This looks promising.

• Ubuntu upgrade deleted my email accounts

  I'm a long term Ubuntu user and until today I have been really happy. I've always run Evolution and Thunderbird and after Ubuntu apparently upgraded me from 11.04 to 11.10 both my Evolution and Thunderbird programmes and all data / address books, messages and folders were deleted and I now have to create new accounts for both programmes. All my previous data is LOST. Thanks a lot guys. Why did this happen and why was there no warning given that this could be an issue ??? Is any of this recoverable ?

• A rather long question about installation/uninstall

  Ok so here's the deal guys, last week I decided I want to install Ubunutu again because I really missed it. (Last time I had an ubunutu was 7.somehting) I downloaded 12.04 and isntalled it via bootable usb device. Knowing how dual boots works I cleared up some space on my hard disc before hand using the windows 7 built in disc manager. During Ubunutu's installation I thought that by choosing "Install Ubuntu alongside Windows 7" will automatically just use the space I cleared before, but apperentaly it did not since that partition is still 100% free space. On what partition is Ubunutu installed when using that method? And how can I uninstall it to re-install it back on the space I cleared up for it? Thank you very your time reading and helping!

• How to setup NX server and client?

  I installed NX server on my desktop and able to run it successfully following this tutorial: http://michigantelephone.wordpress.com/2007/10/15/how-to-install-nx-server-and-client-under-ubuntukubuntu-linux/ When i run the command sudo /usr/NX/bin/nxserver –status I am seeing the following output : NX 900 Connecting to server .. NX 110 NX Server is running. NX 999 Bye. It means i have setup NX server correctly.. But on other machine when i open NX client it is asking for hostname..what name should i give there? Every tutorial is explaining about how to install and start NX server but not about how to connect to the server from client.. Could you guys please help me? Thanks in Advance Deter
