• Do database tables need to have IDs?

  Is an ID field is always needed in database tables? In my case I have a user with firstName, lastName and email fields. email is unique and not null, so it could be used as an ID, right? So in that case, could/should I try to remove the ID? Also I want to have another table which extends this one. Let's say its called patient and it has it's own field additionalData and I would like to link the relationship through the email of user I mentioned. So the relationship should be 1 to 1, right? and I wouldn't need the IDs? Somehow MySQL Workbench wants me to use the IDs. What do you guys think. Any suggestions on this topic?

• MCTS certification (Windows Communication Foundation Development)

  Hi guys! I seriously need some advice on getting MCTS certified (Windows Communication Foundation Development) I just cannot go to a MS certification courses as they are very expensive here and far from my hometown. I want to self educate myself and I don't know where to start with. My problem is finding good study materials and sample exam questions. I haven't taken any Microsoft exams before so I have got no idea what they would ask me on the exam (70-513). Can anyone give me some ideas on how to start from scratch? • several subdomains pointing to one folder. fasthosts problem

  I have a asp.net website (e.g. www.website.com). The idea is that you will go to the url 'yourname.website.com' and my site will request the name from the sub domain, process it and change the content accordingly. So, I purchased my fasthosts hosting package and created a sub domain which points to a folder within my site. e.g. 'www.website.com/folder'. However, when i now go to the url 'yourname.website.com' it is immediately redirected to 'website.com/folder'. this means I cannot request the subdomain from the url because it has been lost. I have tried contacting these guys but they don't understand and keep going on about some sort of redirect script (although i don't see how any further redirects can solve my problem). Is there something I am missing here? Any suggests or help would be much appreciated!

• Is using ELSE bad programming?

  I've often come across bugs that have been caused by using the ELSE construct. A prime example is something along the lines of: If (passwordCheck() == false){ displayMessage(); }else{ letThemIn(); } To me this screams security problem. I know that passwordCheck is likely to be a boolean, but I wouldn't place my applications security on it. What would happen if its a string, int etc? I usually try to avoid using ELSE, and instead opt for two completely separate IF statements to test for what I expect. Anything else then either gets ignored OR is specifically handled. Surely this is a better way to prevent bugs / security issues entering your app. How do you guys do it?

  I am a "one man team" ASP.NET C#, SQL, HTML, JQuery programmer that wants to split workload with two other guys. Since I never actually thought of possible issue in a team of programmer, there are actually quite a few that came to my mind. delegating tasks (who works on what which is also very much related to security). I found Team Foundation Service could be helpful with this problem and started reading about it. Are there any alternatives? security (do now want for original code to be reused outside the project) How to prevent programmers from having access to all parts of code, and how to prevent them from using that code outside of project? Is trust or contract the only way?

• Why does my program stutter so much?

  I've been very frustrated trying to solve this. I've looked it up, and all the answers are the same: set IsFixedTimeStep = false. This doesn't help me at all, the program is still jittery and stutters. I have absolutely no idea what is going on, can you guys help? • Getting into C# and MVC4 coming from Javascript

  Let me know if this is the wrong place to ask this but, I am trying to get into a backend/server language coming from a front-end javascript background (vanilla, angular, jQuery and a bit of node and mongodb, also some experience with PHP and MySQL). Why C#? My company's entire server-side is MVC4. Occasionally, I am going through commits of the backend guys and have asked them all sorts of questions. A lot of what I have heard and seen just seems appealing. Anyway, I'd rather start with C# first and gradually adopt .NET MVC. Does anybody advice, tips, recommended books, etc for somebody trying to learn C# coming from a JS background?

• XNA: SpriteFont question

  Hi everyone, I need some help with the SpriteFont. I want a different font for my game, other than Kootenay. So, I edit the SpriteFont xml, i.e: <FontName>Kootenay</FontName> or <FontName>Arial</FontName> No problem with Windows fonts, or other XNA redistributable fonts pack. However, I want to use other fonts, that I downloaded and installed already, they are TTF or OTF, both supported by XNA. My problem is, I cant use them, I got this error: The font family "all the fonts i tried" could not be found. Please ensure the requested font is installed, and is a TrueType or OpenType font. So, checking at the windows fonts folder, I check the properties and details of the fonts, I try all the names they have, and but never works. Maybe I need some kind of importing or installing in order to use them, I dont know, and I hope you guys can help me, thanks!

  Why would you hire in-house over outsourcing in developing a product for your company? I can only think of a few but I'm not entirely sure if they're good enough reason. This is actually for a debate that I'm going to have in class. I'm more inclined on the outsourcing part but unfortunately, I was asked to switch to the in-house side of the debate. Any ideas? • web services, J2EE, spring, DB integration project ideas- maybe data mining related?

  Hey guys, I am a graduate CS student (Data mining and machine learning) and have a good exposure to core JAVA (3 years). I have read up a bunch of stuff on Design patterns J2EE Web services( soap and rest) spring and hibernate Java Concurrency - advanced features like Task and Executors. I would now like to do a project combining this stuff (over my free time of corse) to get a better understanding of these things and to kind of make an end to end software (to learn the best design principles etc + svn, maven). Any good project ideas would be really appreciated. I just wanna build this stuff to learn so I dont really mind re-inventing the wheel. Also, anything related to data mining would be an added bonus (fits with my research) but absolutly not necesary (since this project is more to learn to do large scale software developement)

  One of my friends has just completed his college degree and is ready to join the programmers' world. Today he has two offers, one with new projects every time, and another with software maintenance. The remaining factors are not important to him, what he wants to know is which option is better? My experience goes with second option because my first job was the maintenance one and I could learn how my fellow programmers made mistakes while coding . But I soon switched to a new job which required me to create new project every time. I enjoyed both but I must admit that my first job has given me a more advantage today. But it's not necessary that my experience can give benefit to him. But I want to know what is general approach? If I have to give him final verdict on these two, what should I tell him?   I recently got a lapyy from Delhi univesity...its actually free of cost lol! ...but d thing is i have to return it after a year or 2...btw its confo are--amd 5350m,7 gb ram,amd radeon x2 graphics but installed with ubuntu 12.04, hp probuk the thing is i want to play games on it i searched on the net there are a few softwares like wine,playon linux ,etc etc but i m not able to play with them....actually m new to linux ...may be that could b the reason...or so...i hv also got an advice to dual booting windows or so..but i dont want to break GRUB..as m not so proffesional in such things and if something went wrong then i wuld have to pay to the universsity....for any mishap !!!! please help m guys i m in great trouble...virtual box is aloso an handy application to run win appllication...haha,,but i dont knoe how to use it or so..plzzz help me or support me ...i will be highly obliged

  I've searched for this and found a few topics , usually they used a function normalize and using simple vector subtracting which is ok , but how should I do it in sfml ?   Hi all I know there's some decent material floating around relating to more specific areas, but wanted to get some opinions from people who have had bad experiences in the past. I have a project where I can have a say on the design of a B2C web app, which has some external API interfaces. UX is crucial as is speed. Not sure what technology will be used at this stage. In designing this application, I want to make sure obvious features are not left out (i.e. ones that make maintenance/development easier). So can you guys tell me about 'situations gone wrong' that could have been avoided had more consideration taken place? • Managing time for success in the industry? [closed]

  So about a year ago I decided to pursue programming, specifically game development, as a career. I've always been a pretty avid gamer, from chucking turnips at Shy Guys' faces in the 90s, to downing Heroic Deathwing last week. Just recently though, I've been spending a LOT of time playing games and it's starting to show in my programming classes. Yesterday after a discouraging exam, I put my foot down and vowed to myself to keep the gaming:coding ratio in favor of the one that will hopefully pay the bills later on. I realize that knowing games well is a key part of being a good developer, but as I've been recently shown, there's a threshold of pixelated indulgence that must not be crossed if I'm ever going to land my dream job. I'm assuming many of you are quite enthusiastic about games as well. What advice would you give an aspiring programmer regarding time management? Thanks!! (Also, I'm brand new to Stack Exchange...if this belongs somewhere else, I'm happy to move it)

• Hide folder names or such?

  Okay, I have a cpanel account with unmetered everything (pay a bit per month), so I wanna host my forum on it etc I have the domains as lets say money.com wordpress.com forum.com As I'll have to put everything in different folders for instance money will be in /m/ wordpress /w/ and forum in /forum/ or something. What I'm saying is, how do I hide the file so it'll look like money.com/m/ is actually money.com ?? I need to hide the folder name the contents are in so I can host multiple sites, therefore the site will look like its the only site on the host so I don't have to add a redirect for it to direct it to the folder? Thanks guys, been trying for a while!
