• what is this internet explorer (javascript?) syntax error -2146827286?

  Hi everyone, So, I've been trying to troubleshoot this bug where some big percentage of windows users who are on my ajax (jquery) web app are not able to play. I haven't been able to reproduce it on my end with a windows 7 IE8 running in a parallels vm. The main problem seems to be in the javascript somewhere because what users are complaining about is an ajax button isn't working. They click it and nothing happens, so either the event isn't firing, or my ajax call is failing, and possibly the return from the ajax could be failing. After trying some ideas, a friend suggested I check out damnit! https://damnit.jupiterit.com/ which will catch exceptions in javascript and email them to you. This is a pretty awesome tool! So, now i have a little more data, but, am stuck. Basically it seems like the majority of the exceptions seem to be complaining about a syntax error. I will paste the samples below. message: Syntax error number: -2146827286 description: Syntax error Browser: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Windows NT 5.1; Trident/4.0; .NET CLR 1.1.4322; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; .NET CLR 3.0.4506.2152; .NET CLR 3.5.30729; InfoPath.2; .NET CLR 1.0.3705; OfficeLiveConnector.1.3; OfficeLivePatch.0.0) What's interesting is that the syntax error is consistently occurring in browsers reporting MSIE 8.0 but with windows vista, xp, and below, so older OS with the latest IE. Does anyone know of this error? Could this possibly be some weird slow computer/slow internet connection thing where may be my javascript files aren't fully loaded before I call the functions. I am using the jquery $(document).ready() to wait before I setup anything.

• How can I make an AJAX link work once it is moved out of the iFrame?

  Hi, I am using an iFrame with a form that return some content with an AJAX link. I am then moving the returned content out of the iFrame into the main page. However, then the ajax link does not work and the error "Element is null" is created once the link is clicked. How can I move content from the iFrame and still have the AJAX link working? • Linux PDF/Postscript Optimizing

  So I have a report system built using Java and iText. PDF templates are created using Scribus. The Java code merges the data into the document using iText. The files are then copied over to a NFS share, and a BASH script prints them. I use acroread to convert them to PS, then lpr the PS. The FOSS application pdftops is horribly inefficient. My main problem is that the PDF's generated using iText/Scribus are very large. And I've recently run into the problem where acroread pukes because it hits 4gb of mem usage on large (300+ pages) documents. (Adobe is painfully slow at updating stuff to 64 bit). Now I can use Adobe reader on Windows, and use the Create Print PDF option or whatever its called, and it greatly( 10x) reduces the size of the PDF(it removes alot of metadata about form fields and such it appears) and produces a PDF that is basically a Print image. My question is does anyone know of a good solution/program for doing something similiar on Linux. Ideally, it would optimize the PDF, reduce size, and reduce PS complexity so the printer could print faster as it takes about 15-20 seconds a page to print right now.

• Will JSON replace XML as a data format?

  When I first saw XML, I thought it was basically a representation of trees. Then I thought: the important thing isn't that it's a particularly good representation of trees, but that it is one that everyone agrees on. Just like ASCII. And once established, it's hard to displace due to network effects. The new alternative would have to be much better (maybe 10 times better) to displace it. Of course, ASCII has been (mostly) replaced by Unicode, for internationalization. According to google trends, XML has a x43 lead, but is declining - while JSON grows. Will JSON replace XML as a data format? (edited) for which tasks? for which programmers/industries? NOTES: S-expressions (from lisp) are another representation of trees, but which has not gained mainstream adoption. There are many, many other proposals, such as YAML and Protocol Buffers (for binary formats). I can see JSON dominating the space of communicating with client-side AJAX (AJAJ?), and this possibly could back-spread into other systems transitively. XML, being based on SGML, is better than JSON as a document format. I'm interested in XML as a data format. XML has an established ecosystem that JSON lacks, especially ways of defining formats (XML Schema) and transforming them (XSLT). XML also has many other standards, esp for web services - but their weight and complexity can arguably count against XML, and make people want a fresh start (similar to "web services" beginning as a fresh start over CORBA).

• Reading Xml with XmlReader in C#

  I'm trying to read the following Xml document as fast as I can and let additional classes manage the reading of each sub block. <ApplicationPool><Accounts><Account><NameOfKin></NameOfKin><StatementsAvailable><Statement></Statement></StatementsAvailable></Account></Accounts></ApplicationPool> I can't seem to format the above nicely :( However, I'm trying to use the XmlReader object to read each Account and subsequently the "StatementsAvailable". Do you suggest using XmlReader.Read and check each element and handle it? I've thought of seperating my classes to handle each node properly. So theres an AccountBase class that accepts a XmlReader instance that reads the NameOfKin and several other properties about the account. Then I was wanting to interate through the Statements and let another class fill itself out about the Statement (and subsequently add it to an IList). Thus far I have the "per class" part done by doing XmlReader.ReadElementString() but I can't workout how to tell the pointer to move to the StatementsAvailable element and let me iterate through them and let another class read each of those proeprties. Sounds easy!

• Touch friendly GUI in Windows Mobile

  I'm porting an audio processing application written in C++ from Windows to Windows Mobile (version 5+). Basically what I need to port is the GUI. The application is quite complicated and the GUI will need to be able to offer a lot of functionality. I would like to create a touch friendly user interface that also looks good. Which basically means that standard WinMo controls are out the window. I've looked at libraries such as Fluid and they look like something I would like to use. However, as I said I'm developing i C++. Even though it would be possible to only write the GUI part i some .NET language I rather not. My experience with .NET on Windows Mobile is that it doesn't work very well... Can anyone either suggest a C/C++ touch friendly GUI library for Windows Mobile or some kind of "best practices" document/how-to on how to use the standard Windows Mobile controls in order to make the touch friendly and also work and look well in later versions of Windows Mobile (in particular version 6.5)?

• Rails apps blew up on mediatemple's (dv) server

  i managed to fix this issue but i wanted to document it here for any others whom might have similar problems. I'm running a mediatemple (dv) rage server. monit started sending me alerts that i was having resource limitations on the server. logged into plesk and the CPU was pinned at 99.9%. Rebooted the server, catastrophe avoided... Not quite - all my rails apps were not loading My Setup ruby 1.8.6 Rails 2.3.5 w/ passenger installed as an apache module. I noticed a defunct ruby process so i killed and rebooted the server but runby continued to come back as defunct. Started trolling thru the apache log and i saw errors irt updating rubygems. i updated to the latest but then continued to get gem errors. Basically, I had to go thru all my apps and update any gems manually, reboot apache, and all was restored. Not really sure the cause of the issue but wanted to note it for posterity. Anybody else in the community ever have similar issues???

• Looped jQuery slideshow with smooth cross-fades

  I'm trying to do a simple rotating image on the home page. Under the hood I'm reading a directory and then populating urls for the images into an array. What I want to do is cross-fade the images. If it was just a matter of showing the next one, it's easy, but since I need to cross-fade, it's a bit harder. I think what I want to do is do the fades by calling animate() on the opacity value of the <img> tag, and in between swapping out the css background-image property of the enclosing <div>. But the results are not that great. I've used tools for more full featured slideshows, but I don't want the overhead of adding a plugin if I can avoid it, and a simple crossfade seems like it should be easier. Like a css-hacks for ie, but in javascript and for a html file. • Jquery $.get against ASP.NET MVC not working in Opera and Firefox

Opera also doesn't work so I assume it is the same problem. However, above code works just fine in IE 8, Chrome, and Safari. On localhost all of the above browsers work as expected including Firefox and Opera -- they all receive "Got ajax request!" as the response from the server. Anybody have any ideas what's going on here and how to fix it? I am looking for a real solution or at least explanation as to what is going on and why.

• Why does Raphael's framerate slow down on this code?

  So I'm just doing a basic orbit simulator using Raphael JS, where I draw one circle as the "star" and another circle as the "planet". It seems to be working just fine, with the one snag that as the simulation continues, its framerate progressively slows down until the orbital motion no longer appears fluid. • jQuery hover DIV- stay active if they hover over the DIV itself

  I have a DIV that opens up when an image is hovered. When the user leaves the image, the div disappears after a timeout. How can I make it so that the DIV will stay active if the user was to hover over the DIV itself? So the DIV will stay active as long as the user is on the image or the DIV itself? • JQuery not Working in chrome?

  Hi everyone!   It is not clear from the PDF ISO standard document (PDF32000-2008) whether a comment may follow the startxref keyword: startxref Byte_offset_of_last_cross-reference_section %%EOF The standard does seem to imply that comments may appear anywhere: 7.2.3 Comments Any occurrence of the PERCENT SIGN (25h) outside a string or stream introduces a comment. The comment consists of all characters after the PERCENT SIGN and up to but not including the end of the line, including regular, delimiter, SPACE (20h), and HORZONTAL TAB characters (09h). A conforming reader shall ignore comments, and treat them as single white-space characters. That is, a comment separates the token preceding it from the one following it. EXAMPLE The PDF fragment in this example is syntactically equivalent to just the tokens abc and 123. abc% comment ( /%) blah blah blah 123 Comments (other than the %PDF–n.m and %%EOF comments described in 7.5, "File Structure") have no semantics. They are not necessarily preserved by applications that edit PDF files. If they are allowed to appear after the startxref, parsing the file becomes more difficult because you do not know how far to back up from the %%EOF comment to start parsing to find the byte offset. Any ideas?

• jQuery: Multiple animations with a delay on a set of divs

  Hey there, I have a group of 4 divs and I'm looking to use jQuery to animate them once, then have a delay using delay(), and then run another set of animations on them, putting the divs back to their original configuration. In the case of line 2, showOption1() will run fine, but then only $("#option1").animate({ left: "743px", }, 1500); will work from hideOption1() after the delay. The rest of hideOption1() is fired immediately after showOption1() finishes, ignoring the delay. On the other hand, if I run line 5, all the code in hideOption1() runs simultaneously as desired, but ignores the delay entirely, running immediately after showOption1() finishes. How can I have all the code in hideOption1() run simultaneously after the delay? Thanks much in advance!

• Using IsolatedStorage on a IIS server

  I'am a bit confusing about the use of Isolated Storage on an IIS server. I understand the goal of Isolated Storage : provides a safe place to store data with no worry about how and where is this place. Since Isolated Storage has a by-user and by-assembly approach, I'am not to wild about using it on a IIS server where applications have almost their own identity. I haven't really seen the interest of impersonating a web application and almost never seen impersonated web applications myself but this is my point of view. Using Isolated Storage on a server mean : Using Isolated stores in \Documents and Settings\<user>\ Which mean \Documents and Settings\Default User\ when the application pool is owned by Local System or Network Services I guess Which also mean Write rights on this folder for Local System or Network Services Using of impersonation Regarding a web application (logic), these ideas are confusing me... Document and Settings ? Default User ? Enable impersonation just for storage ? No control about storage on server ? Uh ? And then I'am a front of a dilema : use System.IO.Packaging (with Isolated Storage inside) on web applications or find an alternative ? Am I wrong in my approach ? Did I miss something ? Any point of view is appreciated and an explanation about the Isolated Storage with IIS philosophy could be an anwser. Thanks !

I tried oTable.fnAddData(newRow); but that seems not to work. So I am not sure how to do this.
