• Lenovo t400 laptop docking station with DVI out shows green artifacts when connected to monitor

  I have a Lenovo T400 laptop, with Windows XP. I have a docking station connected via DVI to my Samnsung monitor. I'm connected at 1920x1200 resolution and I keep seeing all these green dots (when colors are supposed to be near black). It's really bad. I have tried running on my Samsung monitor, at all sizes, even down town 1280x1024 like my monitors at work. When I use the docking station at work, I am able to connect 2 1280x1024 NEC monitors (one via DVI, one through VGA, both through my docking station). I have absolutely no issue there, both displays work great. I have tried to update the drivers, I've even installed the latest video drivers from lenovo's site (DEC-02-2010). • Properly configuring Linux keyboard on my laptop

  Hey! I have a ps/2 keyboard connected to an Acer Aspire 1694 WLMI via a ps/2 to usb converter. The laptop is running Ubuntu 9.04. The keyboard is a HP model number: SK-250C. I have configured in the 'Keyboard Preferences' the layout to HP SK-250x Multimedia Keyboard. The big problem is when I press certain keys (like for example the arrow keys) I get the 'Save Screenshot' dialog. This is really getting annoying, sometimes I am tying to write an address in browser and just want to go back a few letters and can't. There are other keys that trigger the dialog also (windows key, insert key, home key, page up and page down key, delete key, end key) All works fine If I use the laptop keyboard, but I really want to use the HP keyboard. EDIT: I was testing this and it seems that if I have the 'Num Lock' key turned off the keys work properly. Strange but true!!

• How to set up an inter-OS partition?

  I need a working partition configuration for use and accessibility on both Ubuntu and Windows. I have an 8GB USB flash drive onto which I am installing Ubuntu 11.10 so that I can have a personal bootable OS wherever I go. I've installed Ubuntu several times, but I just can't seem to get this one partition right. This is my own configuration: Partition 1: Primary - 200MB - Beginning - Ext4 - /boot Partition 2: Primary - 1300MB - End - swap area Partition 3: Logical - 5200MB - Beginning - Ext4 - / Partition 4: Logical - 1258MB - Beginning - Ext4 - /home Partition 5: Logical - 42MB - End - FAT32? - /windows? What I want to do is to get partition 5 configured so I can access it on both the installed Ubuntu system and a Windows system (when the USB drive is connected while Windows is booted). Basically, what I want is Ubuntu installed on the USB drive along with a partition that I can access with other operating systems. I'm thinking I just need the technical configuration of "Use as:" and "Mount point:" for my final partition. But I don't know. Any help with this is appreciated. And any other tips are appreciated as well.

• Backup Dropbox to Amazon Glacier

  i'm using Dropbox for Backup which means i keep all my files in my Dropbox folder (encrypted using encfs but that should not be relevant). I like this solution because it is automatic and keeps copies of my files on several machines at different locations. The only thing i could see go wrong is that Dropbox has some sort of bug that tells all my machines to delete the files. So currently i do a Backup of the Dropbox folder to an external Harddrive. With Amazon Glacier it seems affordable to automate Backup snapshots of my Dropbox. What i am looking for is a tool that will do this for me - the base case scenario would be that files would go from Dropbox (using their API) directly to Amazon as uploading the ~80GB from my home connection would take forever... Thanks!

• tradeoffs of iSCSI vs. AFP when using Time Machine with a NAS?

  I'm setting up a home NAS device (Synology DS409) that I'm planning to use for Time Machine backups (amongst other things). What are the tradeoffs between using iSCSI or AFP to mount the backup volume? The Synology wiki suggests that iSCSI is better if the Mac will be frequently disconnected from the network or sleeping, from the point of view of the volume automatically remounting. What about filesystem consistency? Given that unplugging a USB drive without properly unmounting it often requires the Time Machine volume to be repaired, would iSCSI have the same issues?

• Using Remote Desktop, connect to a Windows 7 domain user account without first logging on locally?

  I have a dell laptop (henceforth we'll call this the server) running Windows 7 Enterprise. The server is part of my company's domain. My primary user account is a domain account. When I am at home and not connected to the domain, I prefer to connect to the server using Remote Desktop Connection from my MacBook Pro (we'll call this the client). The problem is, that if I do not physically login to the server, I am unable to connect to it using RDC from the client. I have a local administrator account on the server, and connecting to it via RDC works just fine. I had a feeling that the Mac RDC application was not giving me the full story, so I attempted the same procedure from a Windows 7 client. When trying to login, I get this message: So basically, If I logon to the server physically with my domain user and lock the computer, I can then successfully logon from the client. Otherwise, I am unable to connect.

• Detecting damage done by virus

  This morning after I went to college, a virus infected my PC without any user interaction at my end. When I came home my computer was completely frozen and infected with lots of trojans. I have not typed anything important since returning so keys cannot be logged. However I want to know exactly when my computer crashed from the time of infection to see what could potentially be done remotely by a hacker. The virus my pc was diagnosed with was "fakespypro" on a fully updated Windows 7 installation with firewall enabled. My computer was connected to an internal dorm room network, so probably that has had to do something with it. Any further information about how I could backtrace this virus infection or ways to discover what data might be stolen would be greatly appreciated.

• IPv4 private address assignment

  I'm working on a private network which uses static IPv4 addresses as well as DHCP addressing for the physical LAN network. At a previous company I worked at they would assign static addresses in the 10.*.*.* space and all DHCP/LAN addresses were assigned in the 192.168.*.* space. Both of these address spaces are defined in the IPv4 private address space and there were never any internal conflicts. From personal experience at home, school, at work, and pretty much any other machine I've dealt with extensively (Windows and a few Linux distros), the DHCP server would always by default choose an address from the 192.168.*.* address space. Now my question is can I rely on this behavior? Do DHCP servers always by default assign from the 192.168.*.* pool (or any pool other than the 10.*.*.* pool), leaving the 10.*.*.* pool free for private static addressing? If not, under what conditions might a DHCP server choose an address in the 10.*.*.* address space?

• How to recover data from software RAID 5 disk partition

  I have CentOS 5.8 on my computer, with 5x 1TB hard drives. I used software RAID. (RAID 1 as a boot partition md0, RAID 0 as a root partition md1 and RAID 5 as /home partition md3). Unfortunately one of these hard drives failed lately and I want to replace it with a new one. I want to know that is it possible to change this hard drive without data loss? The important partition is RAID 5 so in theory if one of hard drives failed I should be able to recover its data without any problem. But in practice how can I do that?

• New Dell Vostro 3550 will not boot into Live CD

  I've been trying to install Ubuntu and/or it's derivatives on my new Dell Vostro 3550 but I'm finding it impossible to boot into the live CD environment. Here are the things I've already tried: Booting from multiple versions of multiple distributions (Ubuntu 10.10, Ubuntu 11.04, Mint 11, Mint 10) Booting from a Live USB created with unetbootin, the Linux Mint startup disk creator, the universal USB creator and dd of=linuxmint.***.iso if if=/dev/sdx. Burning a CD and booting from the internal CD drive. In the case of the USB keys with the latest versions of Ubuntu it gets to the page where I can select a boot option, but after selecting an option the screen goes black, even the back light turns off. With the older distributions the screen stays on but it starts loading and then just hangs. The CDs don't even try to boot. It starts spinning but then falls back to the default Windows install. The only way I've got it to work so far is with Wubi, but that's hardly ideal. I'd like to have two separate physical partitions with a /home and /. Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

• QR vcard with a photo

  I am about to get a ton of business cards printed from my new corporation, and I am allowed to have a QR code on it, and I would really like to be able to add a photo to be attached to the vcard.   I just bought a nettop. It came with WinXP Home. I first installed Win 7 on it. I wasn't that happy with the performance so I decided to go back to XP. I am using an external dvd drive and a Win XP Pro disc. I boot from the dvd drive and during the install get this error: Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer. Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program. Setup cannot continue. To quit Setup, press F3. • VPN: What should my Gateway remote ID be?

  I have a Netgear ProSafe UTM. I set the Gateway local ID to it's WAN IP. But I'm not sure what to put for it's Remote ID. I want to be able to connect to it from a laptop across the internet. I can chose between: Remote IP FQDN Client FQDN Cert DN Frankly I've tried them messing around with them all but I'm just shooting in the dark, and the help desk docs are worthless. Also, Googling around seems to end up with lots of pages not really related to what I want. A lot of pages on configuring Cisco or Windows home networking or privacy advocates.

• DBD::mysql gives mysql_init not found

  I have to install a non-admin copy of mysql and perl module DBD::mysql in my home directory. I installed mysql in ~/software/db/mysql and this works since I can start and stop the server and go to the mysql prompt. Then, I downloaded the perl module and installed it using perl Makefile.PL PREFIX=~/myperl/ LIB=~/myperl/lib/lib64/perl5/ --mysql_config=/my_home/software/db/mysql/bin/mysql_config --libs=/myhome/software/db/mysql/lib/libmysqlclient.a make make install I did this to use the statically linked mysql client library. perl -MDBD::mysql -e 1 gives no errors. However, when I actually try to use the module, I get /usr/bin/perl: symbol lookup error: /myhome/myperl/lib/lib64/perl5/x86_64-linux-thread-multi/auto/DBD/mysql/mysql.so: undefined symbol: mysql_init

• Can't see any YouTube videos

  I have a problem with watching YouTube videos. It says: "An error occurred, please try again later". I've tried loading different videos and that's what it says to all the videos I try to watch. I've tried using another browser, clearing cache + cookies etc, but none of that really worked out. My operating system is Windows 7 Home Premium, I use Google Chrome as my browser. And the YouTube videos was able to be watched earlier. I suspect that it has something to do with the PC, since I've got YouTube working on my laptop earlier. Not sure if it still works on my laptop though. Hope I've given enough information for you to help me out with this problem. Feel free to ask if there's anything else you need to know. Anyone who can help me out?

• print jobs are held until the VirtualBox guest OS is reboot

  Here is the setup: VirtualBox 4.1.20 (which the Help window describes as 4.1.12_Ubuntu) Extension Pack 4.1.20 (for USB support) Windows 7 Home Premium as a guest operating system on VirtualBox Ubuntu 12.04 with dist-upgrade's to September 2012 as the host operating system. Fuji Xerox DocuPrint P205b, which I believe is a GDI printer, connected via USB. The problem is that often print jobs will sit in the print queue and nothing comes out of the printer. The printer status for the first item in the queue will be Printing even though nothing happens. Then upon rebooting Windows, the print jobs get printed, seemingly simultaneous to the rebooting process; that is as Windows reloads. One way to avoid this problem is to reboot Windows with the printer cable attached, and then submit the print jobs. The print jobs get printed in a timely manner. Perhaps VirtualBox has a problem with USB being plug-n-play and hot pluggable. It's not convenient to have the printer plugged in when Windows boots because: One, this is a laptop, and Two, I may be boot Windows for a purpose other than printing and not anticipate needing to print. Are there any recommendable fixes for this problem?

• NDepend Evaluation: Part 3

  NDepend is a Visual Studio add-in designed for intense code analysis with the goal of high code quality. NDepend uses a number of metrics and aggregates the data in pleasing static and active visual reports. My evaluation of NDepend will be broken up into several different parts. In the first part of the evaluation I looked at installing the add-in.  And in the last part I went over my first impressions including an overview of the features.  In this installment I provide a little more detail on a few of the features that I really like. Dependency Matrix The dependency matrix is one of the rich visual components provided with NDepend.  At a glance it lets you know where you have coupling problems including cycles.  It does this with number indicating the weight of the dependency and a color-coding that indicates the nature of the dependency. Green and blue cells are direct dependencies (with the difference being whether the relationship is from row-to-column or column-to-row).  Black cells are the ones that you really want to know about.  These indicate that you have a cycle.  That is, type A refers to type B and type B also refers to Type A. But, that’s not the end of the story.  A handy pop-up appears when you hover over the cell in question.  It explains the color, the dependency, and provides several interesting links that will teach you more than you want to know about the dependency. You can double-click the problem cells to explode the dependency.  That will show the dependencies on a method-by-method basis allowing you to more easily target and fix the problem.  When you’re done you can click the back button on the toolbar. Dependency Graph The dependency graph is another component provided.  It’s complementary to the dependency matrix, but it isn’t as easy to identify dependency issues using the window. On a positive note, it does provide more information than the matrix. My biggest issue with the dependency graph is determining what is shown.  This was not readily obvious.  I ended up using the navigation buttons to get an acceptable view.  I would have liked to choose what I see. Once you see the types you want you can get a decent idea of coupling strength based on the width of the dependency lines.  Double-arrowed lines are problematic and are shown in red.  The size of the boxes will be related to the metric being displayed.  This is controlled using the Box Size drop-down in the toolbar.  Personally, I don’t find the size of the box to be helpful, so I change it to Constant Font. One nice thing about the display is that you can see the entire path of dependencies when you hover over a type.  This is done by color-coding the dependencies and dependants.  It would be nice if selecting the box for the type would lock the highlighting in place. I did find a perhaps unintended work-around to the color-coding.  You can lock the color-coding in by hovering over the type, right-clicking, and then clicking on the canvas area to clear the pop-up menu.  You can then do whatever with it including saving it to an image file with the color-coding. CQL NDepend uses a code query language (CQL) to work with your code just like it was a database.  CQL cannot be confused with the robustness of T-SQL or even LINQ, but it represents an impressive attempt at providing an expressive way to enumerate and interrogate your code. There are two main windows you’ll use when working with CQL.  The CQL Query Explorer allows you to define what queries (rules) are run as part of a report – I immediately unselected rules that I don’t want in my results.  The CQL Query Edit window is where you can view or author your own rules.  The explorer window is pretty self-explanatory, so I won’t mention it further other than to say that any queries you author will appear in the custom group. Authoring your own queries is really hard to screw-up.  The Intellisense-like pop-ups tell you what you can do while making composition easy.  I was able to create a query within two minutes of playing with the editor.  My query warns if any types that are interfaces don’t start with an “I”. WARN IF Count > 0 IN SELECT TYPES WHERE IsInterface AND !NameLike “I” The results from the CQL Query Edit window are immediate. That fact makes it useful for ad hoc querying.  It’s worth mentioning two things that could make the experience smoother.  First, out of habit from using Visual Studio I expect to be able to scroll and press Tab to select an item in the list (like Intellisense).  You have to press Enter when you scroll to the item you want.  Second, the commands are case-sensitive.  I don’t see a really good reason to enforce that. CQL has a lot of potential not just in enforcing code quality, but also enforcing architectural constraints that your enterprise has defined. • How to write constructors which might fail to properly instantiate an object

  Sometimes you need to write a constructor which can fail. For instance, say I want to instantiate an object with a file path, something like obj = new Object("/home/user/foo_file") As long as the path points to an appropriate file everything's fine. But if the string is not a valid path things should break. But how? You could: 1. throw an exception 2. return null object (if your programming language allows constructors to return values) 3. return a valid object but with a flag indicating that its path wasn't set properly (ugh) 4. others? I assume that the "best practices" of various programming languages would implement this differently. For instance I think ObjC prefers (2). But (2) would be impossible to implement in C++ where constructors must have void as a return type. In that case I take it that (1) is used. In your programming language of choice can you show how you'd handle this problem and explain why?

• Why does MTP work on one machine, but not another?

  I have two Dell computers, a laptop and a desktop. I reinstalled Windows XP home on both, from the same CD. Then I installed Service pack 3 and ran windows update. When I connect my Creative Zen media player to the desktop, the MTP software that is part of XP recognizes it, and I can copy file to and from it using Windows Explorer. But when I connect the same player with the same cable to the laptop, I can see it in Windows Explorer, but none of the folders that are visible via the desktop are available, and I can't copy anything to or from it. How can I get this working on the laptop?

• Compiz shutdown hook?

  I want to check 10+ local Git repositories if they have any unpushed commit, before shutdown. (I always forgot to push them, so later, the next morning I came office and back home again) I think maybe the shutdown process can check some conditions to meet, if any condition is not met, then give the user the choice to continue to shutdown or just cancel. Then, I can write something to hook the shutdown to check my Git repository to push. EDIT I have changed the title from Ubuntu shutdown hook to Compiz shutdown hook. I want to hook to the small lovely shutdown button, rather then click another ugly shortcut icon on the desktop.

• Monitor sleep in Windows XP does not work. Is there an add on to force it?

  I have an EEE box with XP Home and a DVI connected TFT, and it does not sleep the monitor. It only starts working after I go to the energy control panel and turn it off and on again. Then the timed sleep works for the current session of computer use. After a shut down and boot next day, sleep does not work again (it is still set in the preferences however). What can hold the sleep function from working? Are there issues with Skype or MSN? Is there a utility to be less critic to processes interrupting sleep and offer a more reliable monitor sleep function for XP?
