• AMD FX 8350 potentially overheating

  I am worried that my CPU is overheating when running at maximum capacity. I have not overclocked the machine. The machine often powers down after a couple of minutes of max CPU usage. I get the following events in the Event Log after the crash: Log Name: System Source: Microsoft-Windows-Kernel-Power Date: 11/10/2013 12:05:40 Event ID: 41 Task Category: (63) Level: Critical Keywords: (2) User: SYSTEM Computer: home-pc Description: The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly. What can I do to confirm this or further narrow down this issue? Due to the sudden nature of the crash, no MEMORY.DMP is created I believe. I am happy to post any extra information that is needed.

  Quick resolution: Give full permission to AUTHENTICATED USERS in following folders. a) ORACLE_HOME b) Program Files\ORACLE   Check your PATH. You might have installed different clients in your system and your .NET application is pointing to a home with inappoperiate client. What your .NET application should load is OCI.DLL with File version more than 8.1.7. According to the MSDN document Oracle and ADO.NET:   "The .NET Framework Data Provider for Oracle provides access to an Oracle database using the Oracle Call Interface (OCI) as provided by Oracle Client software. The functionality of the data provider is designed to be similar to that of the .NET Framework data providers for SQL Server, OLE DB, and ODBC. "     The MSDN document System Requirements (Oracle) says: "The .NET Framework Data Provider for Oracle requires Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) version 2.6 or later. • Xmonad Xsession

  My user level: noob-ish, so please bear with me I'm running 12.04 LTS. I have installed and, to some extent, configured xmonad 0.10 The "automagically" created xsession for it works fine as it is, but when I login it won't run a startup script I've created and "call from" /usr/share/xsessions/xmonad.desktop, if that's right. I've read pretty much all I could find about .xinitrc and .xsession, I tried that and it somehow messed up the other "sessions", if I'm explaining myself correctly. Had to $unity --reset to have the "main session" working again. Anyway, my question is, how do I autostart xmobar and set a desktop background after login into xmonad's default Xsession? I tried this script, start-xmonad: #!/bin/bash # #I only used one of the following each time I tried, none worked #Also, do I really need the '&'? I know what they're for, but... nitrogen --restore & feh --bg-scale ~/Pictures/picture.png & #Then I want xmobar to start, again do I need the '&'? I know it's for it to run #in the background, but I tried removing the '&' and xmonad still launched xmobar & #Finally, the only thing that seems to work in this script exec xmonad Yes, I made sure I did chomd +x ~/start-xmonad The xmonad.desktop is [Desktop Entry] Name=XMonad Encoding=UTF-8 Comment=Lightweight tiling window manager Exec=/home/myusername/start-xmonad Icon=custom_xmonad_badge.png Type=XSession So, this didn't work, now I'm here. • SHH Tunnel for Remote Desktop via Intermediary Server

  I've seen many examples of SSH tunnels on the nets, but I'm still having no luck with this. Here's the setup: Windows 7 PC in a private network, sitting behind a firewall, with PowerShellInsider SSH server set up and working fine. Public access Linux server, which has access to the PC. Windows 7 laptop, at home, from which I wish to do remote desktop on the PC. Now, here's what I've tried so far: SSH tunnel from my laptop to the Linux server: ssh -f my_user@LINUX_SERVER -L 6666:LINUX_SERVER_IP:6666 -N SSH to the Linux server where I've set up a tunnel to the PC: ssh -f 'PRIVATE_DOMAIN\my_user'@PC_NAME -L 6666:PC_IP:3389 -N Unfortunately, I must be doing something wrong, because it doesn't seem to work. Any ideas why or, at least, any suggestions on how can I try to debug this setup? At the moment, I have access to all 3 machines (non-root on Linux), so I can test whatever I want...

• Should I Upgrade My Old Wireless Router?

  I have an old wireless router, and I mean stone age old (5 years). There is nothing wrong technically with the router, it serves my wireless needs at home but it is really darn old. A search on Belkin's site for F5D7230-4 actually turns up a different old model so I scrounged up this old review for you to get a sense of what I'm running: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,1572451,00.asp. Is there a valid security reason to replace this router in 2009? Google searches have turned up a few security threats to it and Belkin hasn't released new firmeware in years for it. I am starting to think I should replace it mainly because its NAT is about the only thing protecting me from the outside world. Buying a new wireless router is a boring way to spend money since it just sits on a shelf doing its job. Thoughts?

• What exactly do I have to pay attention for when choosing Windows Hosting Provider?

  This is my first time choosing a hosting company. It is for a web site made in asp.net mvc3. So I was thinking choosing a provider would be easy since I found this page http://www.microsoft.com/web/Hosting/Home which contains hosting offers. Now hours later, I am still searching. The reason is that as soon as I start investigating about particular company, something stands out that I do not like. Here are some examples what I noticed when checking various companies in more detail: Company "about us" page is lacking in information about their company. Few of them had just general description what they do and nothing else, while some others had information like company name but had no address. Checking company name in Business Registry Searches gave no results. Two of the companies I checked had both company name and address but I was unable to find them in the registry. Putting company domain into Google gave mostly results from that domain or web hosting review sites but not much else. I am assuming that good companies should have search results from other sites too. Low Alexa Traffic Rank. There was one company which had a site that looked very professional but their alexa traffic ranking was like 2 million. Are there any other factors I should pay attention to when choosing a hosting company? Do I have legitimate concerns or am I just too paranoid?

• Why can't I access a particular website even though the server appears to be available

  I can't access http://www.lynda.com/ with any of my browsers on my home network. By checking http://www.downforeveryoneorjustme.com/, I can see that the server is up and I can access it via a proxy like TOR. This screen appears immediately after I type the page in It doesn't even try to load the page, it seems. Though when I ping the server I get this: I tried to do ipconfig /flushdns. But it didn't help either. Anyone know how to fix this?

• Google products are excessively slow

  Hi, We're running Windows 2000 for our office server. For years now we have had the problem where everthing Google takes an excessively long time to do anything. Gmail hangs, Analytics takes forever, Google docs times out. I have been back and forth with our ISP on this matter and they are convinced it has something to do with our server. This does not happen when I am at home so the problem either lays with our server or with the ISP. • Power User - archive Outlook mail items into SQL Server

  I am looking (and so far not finding any) for a solution to archive e-mail items from my Outlook into SQL Server. My PST is beginning to get really really big, and I'd love to extract my older e-mail into SQL Server in a way so I can still easily find mails if needed. I would prefer SQL Server as the storage medium since I'm familiar with it, and it's rock solid - I don't want to have a collection of PST files or CHM files or anything like that. Does anyone know of such a solution? I'm a power/home user - I can't afford $5'000 enterprise licenses - I need a sub-$100 solution for private use.

• DNS Resolution doesn't work after uninstalling Cisco VPN & Deterministic Network Enhancer in Win 7

  I just upgraded my home PC to Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit. After trying various methods to get the Cisco VPN client to work, I gave up and decided to just run it in XP mode. The last steps I tried were in this article ( http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itproappcompat/thread/d880dfe5-7f44-4955-8620-2a9355d8ea8b/ ) After that, I uninstalled the Cisco client and rebooted. I uninstalled the Deterministic Network Enhancer and rebooted again. Both uninstalled successfully, but now I'm not able to resolve any DNS. The only way I can resolve DNS is to reinstall the DNE, reboot, and uninstall the DNE. Then I am able to resolve DNS lookups until I reboot again. Once it's rebooted, no more DNS. Any ideas?

• Setting Redmine path

  Hello, How can I set the path on which Redmine should be run, e.g. example.com:3000/redmine instead of example.com:3000? There is an appropriately named option in the settings panel, but it serves a different purpose, according to the documentation and experimental observations (it is used to write URL in emails sent to users). A wider picture: I need this in order to properly serve Redmine on port 80 over Apache's mod_proxy (i.e. at example.com/redmine). The problem is that when running it on /, the home page fails to load the necessary resources (such as JavaScript and CSS files). Any workarounds?

• Exim redirect all unexisting accounts for local domains to a specific account

  I want to route all incoming emails for local domains only to a single account if an account is not setup for that user. I would also like each email to be written in it's own file in user folder. I have a catchall user with /home/catchall/ path where I have a mail folder made for this but so far emails wither fail to deliver (thus my rule did not work) or they do deliver to /etc/mail/catchall file.   I recently looked at my router log. Why are a lot of requests that I don't send originated from a computer in my home network? They do not look like 3rd-party advertisements / images embedded in a page. • Can Remote Desktop be set up to use IPv6?

  I have both a Windows 7 Ultimate and a Windows XP Professional machine set up on my home network. I would like to be able to access them from school. Port forwarding is not currently an option (long story). Is there a way to set it so that I can RDP (yes it has to be RDP not something like TeamViewer or LogMeIn) over IPv6, possibly using Teredo? I have tried but I can't seem to get it working. Also I cannot ping these machines' IPv6 addresses. How can I get this set up?

• Migration of PowerBuilder application to multiplatform

  I developed a client/server application with PowerBuilder in the past for medical clinics and done maintenance for it until now. Now, some clients are asking me to develop a release for Mac/Linux and need some advice about what programming language/technology is best suited for it and the learning curve. It’s not a very very big program but I’m the only developer and have done it in my spare time. PowerBuilder is very productive for this kind of projects (database centric), but it’s not multiplatform and it’s hard to sell PowerBuilder application now days (web, .NET, java sells a lot better with his marketing). My programming skills: - I studied C and C++ in the past (university) but never used it on real projects - Have some Java experience but not in desktop applications - Some experience with Ruby on Rails for web projects - Good skills with PowerBuilder and C# (.NET) (there are my main developing languages) My first dilemma is if I change the desktop application to a web interface, but I think the user will lose some user-experience, and some doctors don’t have a clinic (they are alone at home with my software). I think installing a web application (with webserver) for one user will be overwhelming. If I continue developing desktop application, what is at the moment a good framework/toolset to learn having my skills? Somebody has had similar experiences? A lot of thanks

• Problems with Maverick upgrade

  I upgraded to Maverick 10.10 from Lucid. I have an old Toshiba Satellite with a 1.1 MHz and 256MB RAM. Initially I couldn't get my wireless to work. That solved itself after installing various updates and programs. The problems that remain are: I have to authorize at least 2 times at start-up. This machine is Ubuntu only. No boot load screen. I have a ton of programs and system directories that are in my home folder. Is this normal? It is difficult to wake the computer from sleep. Usually I just shut it down and restart. Tonight I waited and got a message about corrupt memory. The computer takes forever to do just about everything. Slow to start programs or doing things on the web. I am a longtime Mac user (since 1986). I also manage a network of several windoze machines. I am definitely a GUI guy and do very little in the terminal so I really need to know where to begin to get things straightened out. Can I rescue this machine without wiping it and doing a fresh install? This is basically a hobby machine. Aside from all the programs and upgrades I've installed, I have almost no files or documents to worry about saving. Anyone have any ideas about the problems I'm having and the best way to proceed? • Why does WMI Provider Host ( WmiPrvSE.exe ) keep spiking my CPU ?

  I generally keep my laptop on 24x7, and at the end of the day it's really annoying to have my thighs burnt because over overheating. The overheating seems to be a result of WMI Provider Host ( WmiPrvSE.exe ) spiking the CPU utilization to 25% every few minutes. Any ideas why this is happening ? I have an HP Envy 14 (w/ the HP bundled crap) running on Windows 7 Home Premium. (Note: Based on @nhinkle's past observations, it seems that HP Wireless Manager might be the culprit, is there any way to confirm this ?)

• Domain name is forwarding to my localhost, no idea why

  On my local development machine, I have a WAMP setup (Windows Vista Home Premium, Apache 2, MySQL and PHP 5). One of my projects is rehash.dustinfineout.com, which may be related to the problem... For some reason, when I try to visit http://www.rehash.com in a browser, it forwards automatically to 127.0.0.1 loopback/localhost. I discovered this entirely accidentally. I have already looked at the http.conf and extra/httpd-vhosts.conf Apache configuration files and these are not causing it. I also checked the windows hosts file but that had no entries in it either (C:/WINDOWS/System32/drivers/etc/hosts - maybe there is another location I need to check). Any ideas? Just to clarify, rehash.com is NOT my domain.

• Font oddity - is this a bug?

  I have Windows 7 Ultimate Home Edition, installed some new fonts recently (I do graphic design etc.) and have noticed some of them don't display in Windows/Fonts via the control panel, Appearance and Personalization. And when they do occur they always have FONTNAME_0.ttf (is this always common for TTF files?). I have 1306 fonts according to FontFrenzy but it doesn't show all of them via the Appearance and Personalization control panel. Also, in C:\Windows\Fonts, the fonts only show as the file name, e.g. arial.ttf (but for some odd reason arial_0.ttf appears, same for other fonts). Why is this, and anyone else had this problem before!

• How to start a high school Java/Android development club for 13-17 year olds

  My wife is a high school maths teacher, and is considering starting a programming club for 13-17 years olds who show an interest. Their interest seems to be around Apps and Android which I have little experience of. The kids would be (presumably) interested in programming, and have a fairly high level of computing knowledge. We would provide them with resources and some knowledge, but hopefully a lot would be self guided. I'm hoping stack overflow'ers can provide some tips or starting points. Specific things I think I'll need are; A development Environment; Currently I'm looking towards Java and Android, developed in Eclipse, probably installed on donated older hardware Some initial direction; There seem to be a plethora or 'start android' tutorials, so some recommendations for good ones are valuable, as are recommended paper books A Target; Some final project they should be shooting for A Route; This is where I'm most stuck, how to lead them through the required Java concepts and learning they would need Some related questions already out there Language+IDE for teaching high school students? Teaching "web design/development" to high-school home-school group. Good sources? How can I bootstrap a software development community at my school?

• Linux - How to manage the password of root?

  We have just deployed a couple of Linux server. Each sysadmin will have his own account on the server (i.e.: jsmith), and will connect using SSH with a certificate which will be put into the "authorized_keys" file in their home directory. Once connected on the server, if they want to issue an elevated command, they will do like: sudo ifconfig They will then enter the root password. What I would like to know now are the best practices in managing that root password. Should I change it periodicaly? And how do I share that new password with the sysadmins? **Of course I will disable the root logon in SSH.
