• Is an ACPI GPE storm normal in an Ubuntu session?

  In a previous question (What is a an ACPI GPE storm?), I asked about ACPI GPE storm. Looking closer to my kern.log file in /var/log/, I notice that in every session at some point (usually withing 20' after startup) a GPE storm is triggered. When I open kern.log immediately after startup, I see that the 'GPE-storm' can be triggered by anything (a copy-action, the opening of an app like Firefox or Thunderbird, etc...). This worries me. Looking for other ACPI related events in kern.log, I find these error messages. • How to automount SMB shared network drives in Mac OS X Lion

  In Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) Apple has replaced good old SMB support. Now I can't auto connect to my shared (SMB) network drives. Workarounds? Or Impossible? In OS X Snow Leopard, I could automatically connect my Ubuntu (SMB) shared network drives with auto_smb / auto_master (autofs configuration in /private/etc/). I made three mount points (folders) directly in '/Volumes', I used /Volumes/Data and /Volumes/webroot (both SMB shared). Unfortunately Lion doesn't connect (automount) my network drives. I have to manually connect to the server (Ubuntu file server) in Finder, then open up Terminal to navigate to the mount points, and then it connects. This is not a workable solution. I've searched (Google/SO) but found no solutions apart from an unsupported hack. Isn't it possible any more to automatically connect to an SMB-shared drive during startup?

• How to solve Microsoft Office error 1402 on Windows 7?

  I have installed Microsoft Office on my new Windows 7 64-bit system. Recently, it encounter some error and i tried to re-install it. It wa\sn't successful. So, I have to use Microsoft Install Clean Up to uninstall Microsoft Office. When I tried to install it back, I received this message: Microsoft Office 2007 encountered an error during setup. Error 1402. Setup cannot open the registry key. {a bunch of long keys}. Verify that you have sufficient permissions to access the registry or contact Microsoft Product Support Service for assistance. For information about how to contact PSS, see {a *chm file}. After that, I tried to run the setup as admin but I ended up woth the same error. So, what should I do to solve this problem?

• Apache whitelist a single location, but require basic auth for everything else

  I'm sure this is simple, but Google is not my friend this morning. The goal is: /public... is openly accessible everything else (including /) requires basic auth. This is a WSGI app, with a single WSGI script (it's a django site, if that matters..) I have this: <Location /public> Order deny,allow Allow from all </Location> <Directory /> AuthType Basic AuthName "My Test Server" AuthUserFile /path/to/.htpasswd Require valid-user </Directory> With this configuration, basic auth works fine, but the Location directive is totally ignored. I'm not surprised, as according to this (see How the Sections are Merged), the Directory directive is processed first. I'm sure I'm missing something, but since Directory applies to a filesystem location, and I really only have the one Directory at /, and it's a Location that I wish to allow access to, but Directory always overrides Location... EDIT I'm using Apache 2.2, which doesn't support AuthType None.

• Why does a group policy not applied to the domain administrator account?

  I have a working policy on my entire domain. I just found out, when logging with the domain administrator, that this policy is not applied (EDIT: Running : gpresult shows that the GPO's are applied - but, this GPO is for Drive Mappings, and the actual drive mappings are NOT shown) The administrator account - does not have any login script on his profile tab. My GPO's are mainly small/atomic settings: single GPO to handle each settings: UAC, Firewall, printers. GPO status for the object is enabled That's an overview of the Drive Maps: Reading on MS support site, I checked the delegation tab, and it is marked as applied to domain and enterprise admins. Every user gets these policies correctly. The OU that is set is the root of the domain. (for testing purpose - I did that to eliminate hierarchy issues - did not help) Block Inheritance is disabled. • SQL University: What and why of database testing

  This is a post for a great idea called SQL University started by Jorge Segarra also famously known as SqlChicken on Twitter. It’s a collection of blog posts on different database related topics contributed by several smart people all over the world. So this week is mine and we’ll be talking about database testing and refactoring. In 3 posts we’ll cover: SQLU part 1 - What and why of database testing SQLU part 2 - What and why of database refactoring SQLU part 2 – Tools of the trade With that out of the way let us sharpen our pencils and get going. Why test a database The sad state of the industry today is that there is very little emphasis on testing in general. Test driven development is still a small niche of the programming world while refactoring is even smaller. The cause of this is the inability of developers to convince themselves and their managers that writing tests is beneficial. At the moment they are mostly viewed as waste of time. This is because the average person (let’s not fool ourselves, we’re all average) is unable to think about lower future costs in relation to little more current work. It’s orders of magnitude easier to know about the current costs in relation to current amount of work. That’s why programmers convince themselves testing is a waste of time. However we have to ask ourselves what tests are really about? Maybe finding bugs? No, not really. If we introduce bugs, we’re likely to write test around those bugs too. But yes we can find some bugs with tests. The main point of tests is to have reproducible repeatability in our systems. By having a code base largely covered by tests we can know with better certainty what a small code change can break in other parts of the system. By having repeatability we can make code changes with confidence, since we know we’ll see what breaks in other tests. And here comes the inability to estimate future costs. By spending just a few more hours writing those tests we’d know instantly what broke where. Imagine we fix a reported bug. We check-in the code, deploy it and the users are happy. Until we get a call 2 weeks later about a certain monthly process has stopped working. What we don’t know is that this process was developed by a long gone coworker and for some reason it relied on that same bug we’ve happily fixed. There’s no way we could’ve known that. We say OK and go in and fix the monthly process. But what we have no clue about is that there’s this ETL job that relied on data from that monthly process. Now that we’ve fixed the process it’s giving unexpected (yet correct since we fixed it) data to the ETL job. So we have to fix that too. But there’s this part of the app we coded that relies on data from that exact ETL job. And just like that we enter the “Loop of maintenance horror”. With the loop eventually comes blame. Here’s a nice tip for all developers and DBAs out there: If you make a mistake man up and admit to it. All of the above is valid for any kind of software development. Keeping this in mind the database is nothing other than just a part of the application. But a big part! One reason why testing a database is even more important than testing an application is that one database is usually accessed from multiple applications and processes. This makes it the central and vital part of the enterprise software infrastructure. Knowing all this can we really afford not to have tests? What to test in a database Now that we’ve decided we’ll dive into this testing thing we have to ask ourselves what needs to be tested? The short answer is: everything. The long answer is: read on! There are 2 main ways of doing tests: Black box and White box testing. Black box testing means we have no idea how the system internals are built and we only have access to it’s inputs and outputs. With it we test that the internal changes to the system haven’t caused the input/output behavior of the system to change. The most important thing to test here are the edge conditions. It’s where most programs break. Having good edge condition tests we can be more confident that the systems changes won’t break. White box testing has the full knowledge of the system internals. With it we test the internal system changes, different states of the application, etc… White and Black box tests should be complementary to each other as they are very much interconnected. Testing database routines includes testing stored procedures, views, user defined functions and anything you use to access the data with. Database routines are your input/output interface to the database system. They count as black box testing. We test then for 2 things: Data and schema. When testing schema we only care about the columns and the data types they’re returning. After all the schema is the contract to the out side systems. If it changes we usually have to change the applications accessing it. One helpful T-SQL command when doing schema tests is SET FMTONLY ON. It tells the SQL Server to return only empty results sets. This speeds up tests because it doesn’t return any data to the client. After we’ve validated the schema we have to test the returned data. There no other way to do this but to have expected data known before the tests executes and comparing that data to the database routine output. Testing Authentication and Authorization helps us validate who has access to the SQL Server box (Authentication) and who has access to certain database objects (Authorization). For desktop applications and windows authentication this works well. But the biggest problem here are web apps. They usually connect to the database as a single user. Please ensure that that user is not SA or an account with admin privileges. That is just bad. Load testing ensures us that our database can handle peak loads. One often overlooked tool for load testing is Microsoft’s OSTRESS tool. It’s part of RML utilities (x86, x64) for SQL Server and can help determine if our database server can handle loads like 100 simultaneous users each doing 10 requests per second. SQL Profiler can also help us here by looking at why certain queries are slow and what to do to fix them.   One particular problem to think about is how to begin testing existing databases. First thing we have to do is to get to know those databases. We can’t test something when we don’t know how it works. To do this we have to talk to the users of the applications accessing the database, run SQL Profiler to see what queries are being run, use existing documentation to decipher all the object relationships, etc… The way to approach this is to choose one part of the database (say a logical grouping of tables that go together) and filter our traces accordingly. Once we’ve done that we move on to the next grouping and so on until we’ve covered the whole database. Then we move on to the next one. Database Testing is a topic that we can spent many hours discussing but let this be a nice intro to the world of database testing. See you in the next post.

  I'm looking for VIM replacement. My key points are: Extensible in sane language (such as Python, Ruby, or even Lua, after vimscript everything will do). Also GUI part should be extensible too, so no SublimeText2. GUI. Preferrably GTK+. Lightweight. I don't understand IDEs like Eclipse/NetBeans consuming up to 1G of RAM. File browser panel. Splits, tabs and windows. There should be ability to split views tabs infinite number of times (or while they fit to screen). VCS support (optional: especially Git) Snippets & autocompletion (not mandatory, but I would very love to have those) Any ideas?

• Installing Apache2 and PHP5 on a XServe G5 running 10.4

  Hello- I have an Apple XServe G5, running OS X Server 10.4. I want to update my Apache installation from 1.3 to 2 and PHP to 5. I also want to install PHP GD support. I have scoured the internet for a guide on how to do this, but to no avail. I also tried to use Entropy to install PHP 5 several times, and it always manages to royally mess up my system. Obviously I can't install Leopard or Snow Leopard because it is a PowerPC processor. Can anyone give me any tips on how to get this software updated or point me to a guide? Thanks, Chris

• Hot fix published for TFS2010 upgrade issues

  Microsoft has released a hot fix for the issues that are identified after the migration of TFS2005/TFS2008 servers to TFS2010. The issues are related to Merging and Labels: ·         Labels that were created before the upgrade are entirely empty.  Labels could be also have incorrect contents. ·         The merge wizard in Visual Studio does not display all valid merge targets for a given source path/branch. ·         During merging, merge candidates are shown for changes that were already merged prior to the upgrade. If you have not yet upgraded to TFS 2010, the hotfix is now available and is highly recommended to be applied before configuring your team project collections. Because this hotfix applies to the upgrade of version control content, it must be applied after TFS 2010 setup is complete, but before configuration is started.  At the end of the setup experience, the Success screen is shown indicating the completion of the installation.  Normally, users will continue on to the configuration part, but in this case, the user need to cancel the configuration part by un-checking the “Launch Team Foundation Server Configuration Tool” box, which will enable the Cancel button. After exiting setup, the hotfix executable can be run to update the upgrade steps. • gitosis always asks for git password

  I've just followed the simple gitosis install instructions on an Ubuntu server, such as these http://blog.agdunn.net/?p=277 On the server I log in as "mark", and into /home/mark/.ssh/ I copied my keyfiles id_rsa and id_rsa.pub from my laptop. I used that id_rsa.pub when initialising the gitosis stuff, and can happily connect locally when logged in as 'mark'. From my laptop though, where I have the same keys, I can't connect. I just get an error: git clone git@support:gitosis-admin.git Initialized empty Git repository in u:/gitosis-admin/.git fatal: The remote end hung up unexpectedly The server is Ubuntu 9.04, the client is a Win7 laptop with Cygwin and WinSysGit.

  I have created a blog on blogger few days ago and created two blog entries on it. when i try creating AdSense account with blog's address it does not accept the application due to PageType. i have searched around on the net and found that its probably due to duplicate or insufficient content on the blog but either of my blog entry is more than 2,000 words and i have literally typed 80 percent of its content with only few code blocks copied from other sites. • Which shopping cart / ecommerce platform to choose?

  I need to build an ecommerce website within a tight budget and schedule. Of course, I have never done that before, so I have googled out what my solutions are and I have concluded that the following were not valid candidates anymore : Magento : Steep learning curve osCommerce : old, bad design, buggy and not user-friendly Zencart, CRE Loaded, CubeCart : based on osCommerce Virtuemart, uberCart, eCart : based on CMS (Joomal, Drupal, WordPress) that is not necessary for my use-case So I finally narrowed down my choices to these solutions : PrestaShop : easy-to-use, great templating engine (smarty) but many modules are not free buy yet indispensable OpenCart : security issues and not a great support from the main developer. So, as you can see, I am a little bit confused and if you can help me choosing an easy-to-use, lightweight and cheap (not-necessarily free) ecommerce solution, I would really appreciate. By the way, I am a Java/Grails programmer but I am also familiar with PHP and .NET. (not with Python or Ruby/Rails) EDIT: It seems that this question is more appropriate for the Webmaster StackExchange site. So please move this question to where it belongs (I cannot do that) instead of downvoting it. (Not spam) I really like Google Apps but they have sending limits 2000 sending per day, that is not suit for my case becuz I cannot have sending limits. My web application will host in linode, I am considering "Amazon Simple Notification Service" for the email notification. • Virtualizing WindowsXP on Linux Fedora 12 for Photoshop....

  I am running a Linux server from 2000, I have Fedora12 installed as the OS. I know you can virtualize Windows XP on the system to be able to run Windows programs, but the problem is I My server has only one 1333Mhz Pentium 3 processor and 1G of Ram. granted this is a pretty kick ass computer for the day, but lacking the second processor I'm afraid that I will not be able to run Windows virtualization to support Photoshop CS3. Is there any program out there that runs similar to Photoshop, like windows Digital Image suite 10, that will run smoothly in my Linux Fedora 12 environment? or can I virtualize windows and run the Windows digital image suite 10, without slowing or corrupting my system?

• SQL SERVER – Download PSSDIAG Data Collection Utility

  During an early career of mine as a database consultant – when I was dealing with SQL Server 2000, I often needed to collect various data related to SQL Server. My favorite tool to collect the data is PSSDIAG tool. It is a general purpose diagnostic collection utility that Microsoft Product Support Services uses to collect various logs and data files. It collects Performance Monitor logs, SQL Profiler traces, SQL Server blocking script output, Windows Event Logs, and SQLDIAG output. The data collected can be used by SQL Nexus tool which help you troubleshoot SQL Server performance problems. PSSDIAG is a wrapper around other data collection APIs and utilities, the performance impact of running PSSDIAG is generally equal to the impact of the traces that PSSDIAG has been configured to capture. If you are using SQL Server 2000 – you need to seriously consider to upgrading it to SQL Server 2012. Here is a PSSDIAG Data Collection Utility updated in August 2012. • Strategy for restoring state via URL in web apps

  This is a question about modern web apps, where a single page is loaded, and all subsequent navigation is done by XHR calls and modifying the DOM. We can use libraries that manipulate the hash string, which let us navigate by URL and support the back/forward buttons. But to use those libraries, we need to be able to move the UI from any one state to any other. Is there a good strategy for moving between UI states, that also allows them to be restored from scratch when you load a new URL? In a complex app, you might have a lot of different states. You don't want to reload the entire UI each time you change states. But you also don't want to require separate methods for moving from every state to each every state. Typically we need to: Restore a state from scratch, when you enter a new URL or hit Reload. Move from one state to another, when you use the Back/Forward buttons. Move from one state to another, when you perform an action within your app (like clicking a link). Move to certain states that shouldn't be added to the history, like ones that appear after form submissions. Move to some states that are built on the previous state, like a drill-down list. When you perform actions within your app, there's the additional question of which comes first: Do you change the URL, listen for the URL change, and change your state in response to it? Or do you change your state, then change the URL, but don't do anything in response? Does anyone have some experience to share on this topic?

Read on: Summary: Oracle is the #1 player in  Supply Chain Planning  according to research firm ARC Advisory Group Details: The report (Source: ARC Advisory Group, “Supply Chain Planning Worldwide Outlook, Market Analysis and Forecast through 2016,” Clint Reiser, Steve Banker), gives Oracle 21.1% of revenue share, compared to SAP, who was second at 18.6%. JDA Software, Aspen, Logility, and Infor were the next players in the market. The total market was valued at $1.506B. ARC counts Software (new license and upgrades), Implementation Services, Maintenance and Support, and SaaS, in its definition. ARC defines supply chain planning to include four key application areas: Extended SCP, Manufacturing Planning, Inventory/Distribution Planning, and Demand Management. Extended SCP consists of Network Design, Capable to Promise, SCP Composites, and Extended Supply Chain BI software. In the report, ARC further gives Oracle the number one spot in both Software Revenues and Services Revenues subsegments, as well as in many vertical areas such as Government, Electronics and Electrical, Medical Products, Pharmaceutical, and Wholesale/Distribution. ARC also issued a forecast, that predicts SCP revenue to grow from $1.506B in 2011 to $2.172B in 2016, with a CAGR of 7.6%. • Windows 8.1 fresh install with Windows 8 licence

  I purchased Windows 8 online from Microsoft a while ago. Today Windows 8.1 was released as a free update to Windows 8 users over the Windows Store. I was planning to do a fresh install of Windows 8.1 to have a clean system again and UEFI support because I got new hardware since the Windows 8 installation. So my questions are: Where do I get the ISO installation medium for Windows 8.1 64-bit? I tried this microsoft site where I initially got my Windows 8 ISO from, but when entering my Windows 8 key in the Windows 8.1 installer, it says the key is wrong. Even if I get the ISO, will my old key work? I'm concerned because it didn't work in their installer (see previous point) Do they seriously want me to reinstall Windows 8 and after that upgrade to Windows 8.1 through their Store?!

• What are the packages/libraries I should install before compiling Python from source?

  Once in a while I need to install a new Ubuntu (I used it both for desktop and servers) and I always forget a couple of libraries I should have installed before compiling, meaning I have to recompile, and it's getting annoying. So now I want to make a complete list of all library packages to install before compiling Python (and preferably how optional they are). This is the list I compiled with below help and by digging in setup.py. It is complete for Ubuntu 10.04 and 11.04 at least: build-essential (obviously) libz-dev (also pretty common and essential) libreadline-dev (or the Python prompt is crap) libncursesw5-dev libssl-dev libgdbm-dev libsqlite3-dev libbz2-dev More optional: tk-dev libdb-dev Ubuntu has no packages for v1.8.5 of the Berkeley database, nor (for obvious reasons) the Sun audio hardware, so the bsddb185 and sunaudiodev modules will still not be built on Ubuntu, but all other modules are built with the above packages installed. Python 2.5 and Python 2.6 also needs to have LDFLAGS set on Ubuntu 11.04 and later, to handle the new multi-arch layout: export LDFLAGS="-L/usr/lib/$(dpkg-architecture -qDEB_HOST_MULTIARCH)" For Python 2.6 and 2.7 you also need to explicitly enable SSL after running the ./configure script and before running make. • alternatives to altaris/symentec SVS

  I use an old copy of altaris SVS (link to lifehacker - symentec gutted the old altaris website) for testing applications - it lets me capture the changes one executable makes, or changes to a whole system into a bundle, and remove the whole bundle once i'm done. However symentec bought over altaris and apparently killed off the product, or merged it into some other bigger product. I'd like the same fine grained control SVS had, something that just does this, and preferably free (for personal use) or not too expensive. I'd like this to run on at least windows XP 32 bit, but windows 7 and 64 bit support would be nice too

• How to install audio drivers for Acer Revo nettop?

  I have a Acer Revo nettop. I wiped the XP Home install that came on the machine and put XP Pro on. Acer's support website would lead you to believe that this product does not exist. I know it has a NVIDIA ION LE chipset so I headed over to nvidia.com to download drivers. Ive downloaded and installed the Chipset drivers, Graphics Drivers, and HDMI audio drivers. I have no sound. Under Device Manager there is an unknown Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus. I do not have an HDMI cable to test hdmi audio. I would just like the standard audio mini-jack output to work. Anyone know of the correct driver or a generic driver that would work? Thanks

• ubuntu ppa's and apt precedence

  I'm trying to get the latest mplayer installed with vdpau support. Haven't had any luck so far. I found a PPA that says it works and I want to install it. I added the PPA to my apt.sources and did an update. I just wanted to know, how do I know that I'm now installing the mplayer package from the PPA, and not Ubuntu's standard repositories? From what I see I just install the same package using apt-get install mplayer. How do I know which mplayer I'm getting? Where do I specify what takes precedence?
