    So there is this nice picture in the hash maps article on Wikipedia: Everything clear so far, except for the hash function in the middle. How can a function generate the right index from any string? Are the indexes integers in reality too? If yes, how can the function output 1 for John Smith, 2 for Lisa Smith, etc.?

  • SQL join produces one result only

    Can anyone please tell me why this result is generation only one results? taking in mind that everything is set right and the three tables are populated correctly, i took out the group_concat and it worked but of course with a php undefined index error!   • Unresponsive Clojure REPL after exception

    If I start a REPL and then do something that throws an exception like (use 'non-existent-thing) ** then after that the REPL ceases to evaluate anything I enter. Is there a special key I can press to make it turn round, face me, uncross its arms and listen once more ? Or must I ctrl-d, restart, type everything up to where I was and get it right this time ? ** which results in: Exception in thread "Thread-1" java.lang.RuntimeException: java.io.FileNotFoundException: Could not locate non_existent_thing__init.class or non_existent_thing.clj on classpath: (NO_SOURCE_FILE:0)

  • In MySQL how can I tell what character set a particular table is using?

    I have a large mysql table that I think might be using the wrong character set. If so I'll need to change it using ALTER TABLE mytable CONVERT TO CHARACTER SET utf8 But since this is a very large table, I'd rather not run this command unless I have to. So my question is, how can I ask mysql what the character set is on a particular table? I can call status in mysql to see the database's character set, but that doesn't necessarily mean all the tables have the same character set, right?

  • Using MySQL to generate daily sales reports with filled gaps, grouped by currency

    I'm trying to create what I think is a relatively basic report for an online store, using MySQL 5.1.45 The store can receive payment in multiple currencies. I have created some sample tables with data and am trying to generate a straightforward tabular result set grouped by date and currency so that I can graph these figures. I want to see each currency that is available per date, with a 0 in the result if there were no sales in that currency for that day. If I can get that to work I want to do the same but also grouped by product id. In the sample data I have provided there are only 3 currencies and 2 product ids, but in practice there can be any number of each. I can correctly group by date, but then when I add a grouping by currency my query does not return what I want. I based my work off this article.   • Asp.net ajax combobox doesn't display correctly when inserted inside a tab control.

    Hi everybody, I have a display problem when I try to use a ajax combobox inside a tab control: when my tab control loads on the page where the combobox is, everything works fine; however, if it loads on a another page, the you change to the page which contains the combobox, the right button (which opens the list of the combobox) isn't displayed at all. Has someone been through this behavior? And maybe found a solution ? Thanks in advance !

    This seems like it should be fairly easy - but I can't find the right selector for it According to the docs (http://api.jquery.com/hidden-selector/ and http://api.jquery.com/visible-selector/)... Elements can be considered hidden for several reasons: An ancestor element is hidden, so the element is not shown on the page. What I want to detect is "this element is visible, but is contained in a hidden parent". Ie, if I made the parent visible, this element would also be visible.

    Can someone explain the difference between apache mod_wsgi in daemon mode and django fastcgi in threaded mode. They both use threads for concurrency I think. Supposing that I'm using nginx as front end to apache mod_wsgi. UPDATE: I'm comparing django built in fastcgi(./manage.py method=threaded maxchildren=15) and mod_wsgi in 'daemon' mode(WSGIDaemonProcess example threads=15). They both use threads and acquire GIL, am I right?

  • CSS image float div problem in IE6

    In the bottom cap of this page (bottom with corners) I seem to be having a weird IE6 issue. I've tried Google with no luck, as really, how do you ask this question.   • Why is giving a fixed width to a label an accepted behavior?

    There are a lot of questions about formatting forms so that labels align, and almost all the answers which suggest a pure CSS solution (as opposed to using a table) provide a fixed width to the label element. But isn't this mixing content and presentation? In order to choose the right width you basically have to see how big your longest label is and try a pixel width value until "it fits". This means that if you change your labels you also have to change your CSS.

  • Negate the null-coalescing operator

    I have a bunch of strings I need to use .Trim() on, but they can be null. It would be much more concise if I could do something like: string endString = startString !?? startString.Trim(); Basically return the part on the right if the part on the left is NOT null, otherwise just return the null value. I just ended up using the ternary operator, but is there anyway to use the null-coalescing operator for this purpose?

    I have a lot of constants in my code that are unsigned numbers, e.g. counters, frequency cutoffs, lengths, etc. I started using std::size_t for all of these, instead of int or unsigned int. Is that the right thing to do? I started it because the STL containers use it for their sizes, it's used for string position, etc.

    Right now I am writing a simulation program which output is formatted according to certain factors. The question is in a MVC architecture, where is the conditional formatting to be taken place? What are some strategies for implement this feature? FYI, The platform I am using is rather bare-bone in its GUI/front-end execution. To change color and formatting, it requires a change to the formatting state (much like OpenGL).
