  Being a C++ programmer with 7-8 years of experience, I wanted to know the market trends. When I searched a little bit I found more jobs with keyword C# than C++ or Java. I am just wondering if it is a good idea to learn C# or Java from a career perspective. Also, I read somewhere about Salesforce/apex. It was mentioned that this is something in vogue. So my question is which technology I should go for C#/Java/Salesforce(Apex) from career perspective? Thanks

• Architecture for html5 multiplayer game?

  Hello I want to write a HTML5 multiplayer game in which there are rooms with two players answering a series of questions with 3 possible answers, 10sec/question, which are being downloaded from a server. It will have some ratings and so on. I want to make it as scalable as possible. I wonder what technologies to use to accomplish that. HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript obviously. But what about the server-side? I have been researching and found that Socket.IO + Node.js + mongoDB would do the job but after doing some more research it maybe not. Can you suggest me some kind of architecture for doing this game? Free technologies, if possible. Or what to read and from where to start in order to understand how to do it. Thanx in advance! P.S. I have an experience with HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, C#, ASP.NET MVC and relational db's.

  From what I understand, every code in f# is an expression, including let binding. Say we got the following code: let a = 5 printfn "%d" a I've read that this would be seen by the compiler as let a = 5 in ( printfn "%d" a ) And so the value of all this would be value of inner expression, which is value of printf. On the other hand, in f# interactive: > let a = 5;; val a : int = 5 Which clearly indicates that the value of let expression is the value bound to the identifier. Q: Can anyone explain what is the value of a let expression? Can it be different in compiled code than in F# interactive?

• Installing Ruby on Rails without access to command line

  I'm VERY new to this whole web dev thing but I can program and I liked Ruby when I used it before. Now, I've got web hosting and a domain and a site on there that's currently ran under Joomla but I'd like to experiment with Rails. The most access I can get to the server is FTP and maybe a setting here and there in the control panel. Definitely no command line. Is there a way to just, I don't know, upload ruby on rails to a folder and run it in a browser? That's how Joomla works I think. Literally every article I read about this starts with "you just do sudo get..." mumbo jumbo.

• Creating your own computer! [closed]

It's just a bunch of wire (as far as I can tell any way) and I was just wondering what would I have to learn/read/do to make such a thing (or at least to have a really basic understanding of what he did). He also made his own operating system, which I find really impressive. I know it will take a while and I am in no hurry. Note: I am a web programmer and also have done some desktop apps (a few years ago).

• C: What is a good source to teach standard/basic code conventions to someone newly learning the language?

  I'm tutoring someone who can be described as a rank newcomer in C. Understandably, she does not know much about coding conventions generally practiced, and hence all her programs tend to use single letter vars, mismatched spacing/indentation and the like, making it very difficult to read/debug her endeavors. My question is, is there a link/set of guidelines and examples which she can use for adopting basic code conventions ? It should not be too arcane as to scare her off, yet inclusive enough to have the basics covered (so that no one woulc wince looking at the code). Any suggestions ?

• Issue in Webscrapping in C# : Downloading and parsing zipped text files

  I am writing an webscrapper, to do the download content from a website. Traversing to the website/URL, triggers the creation of a temporary URL. This new URL has a zipped text file. This zipped file is to be downloaded and parsed. I have written a scrapper in C# using WebClient and its function - DownloadFileAsync(). The zipped file is read from the designated location on a trapped DownloadFileCompleted event. My issue : The Windows 'Open/Save dialog is triggered". This requires user input and the automation is disrupted. Can you suggest a way to bypass the issue ? I am cool with rewriting the code using any alternate libraries. :) Thanks for reading,

    This is something that comes up rather regularly at forums, so I decided to create a quick post to make sure that folks out there can feel better about SQL Server 2012. If you read this Web article, “Features Supported By Editions of SQL Server 2012” as of time of writing this post, you will see that the article points out that these two features are not supported on x64 Standard Edition. This is NOT correct. It is most definitely a documentation bug – one that unfortunately has caused some customers to sit on a waiting pattern before upgrading to SQL Server 2012. Database Mail and SMO indeed work and are fully supported on SQL Server 2012 Standard Edition x64 instances. These features work as they should. I have contacted the documentation teams internally to make sure that this is reflected on next releases of said Web article.

• My msi gtx460 video card and nvidia problems

I know the os has problems with Nvidia stuff but if i can get the dual screens working, that is one thing out of the way.   I installed Ubuntu 11.10 recently by making a 5.6GB partition from the Ubiquity installer. I wanted to upgrade to 12.04, so I opened the Update Manager and clicked on 'Update Packages' (I was following this guide) After clicking, it said that there was too little space available. So, I want to enlarge my Ubuntu partition so that there is appropriate space for upgrading. I downloaded Gparted. I read another guide which said my computer won't boot if I resize the Ubuntu partition because '/boot will be misplaced and I will have to repair GRUB2 myself.' So how do I do this easily? • Reinstall Ubuntu on Custom Partitions

  I am attempting to reinstall ubuntu 13.04 without losing my installed software and /home docs. I have read countless threads on this same topic, but nothing seems to apply to my situation. When I originally installed, I had created a separate partition for /home, but I am now unsure of which partition that was. Based on the picture below, where should I be installing the new copy? Also, will I run into problems since I am now running 13.10 and want to put 13.04 back on it? Should I grab 12.04 or 13.10 for this reinstall? • What method do I use to manage an app-specific background process?

  I am developing an application with different behavior depending on the arguments : "-config" starts a Gtk window to change options, start and close the daemon. "-daemon" starts a background process that does something every X minutes. I already know how to use fork/system/exec etc... But I would like to know the main logic of such application to : restart or refresh the daemon when configuration change. keep only one instance of the daemon. • Why are Back In Time snapshots so large?

  I just backed up the contents of my home partition onto my external hard drive using Back In Time. I browsed to the backed up contents in the external drive and under properties it showed me the size as 9.6 GB. As I read that in next snapshots I create, Back In Time does not backup everything but creates hard links for older contents and saves newer contents, I wanted to test it. So I copied two small files into my home partition and ran 'Take Snapshot' again. The operation completed within a minute - first it checked previous snapshot, assessed the changes, detected two new files and synced them. After this when I browsed to the backed up contents, I was surprised to see the newer and older backup taking up 9.6 GB each. Isn't this a waste of hard drive space? Or did I interpret something wrongly?

• Migrate from Thunderbird to Mutt

  I am contemplating moving from Thunderbird to Mutt (provided it is feasible) to move to a faster, simpler application. My current Thunderbird set-up consists of multiple IMAP accounts (gmail and google apps). Only selected folders (read labels) in each IMAP account are stored locally. For all other folders, I glance through the headers and open a message only if I find it interesting. I also use folder bookmarks to navigate to folders quickly. I also move messages across folders with keyboard shortcuts. Is it possible to replicate the set-up in Mutt? Can someone share/ point to a sample muttrc file that does the same thing? It would be great if the muttrc file is adequately commented. On a side note, will it also be possible to import my messages from Thunderbird locally? That will save me considerable network traffic (about 2GB data stored locally).
