  • Why isn't .profile sourced on login to LXDE?

    - by papukaija
I switched recently from GNOME to LXDE and since then my .profile file hasn't been sourced on login. I found out that my PATH variable doesn't include ~/bin anymore. However, my .profile file includes PATH="$HOME/bin:$PATH" while PATH's content is /usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games. Is it intended that LXDE doesn't read this file on login? If yes, what file should I use to add the bin folder to the PATH variable? If not, to what package should I report a bug?

  • Preparing yourself for Code challenges

    - by Daniel Fath
Just a few days ago I discovered Codility, and I tried their challenges. And I must say. I got my behind handed to me on a platter. I'm not sure what the problem was, but I'll lick my wounds and wait for the solution to come out and compare it with my own. In the meantime, I want to get ready for the next challenge so I'm reading their previous blog posts and seeing how to solve their previous problems. There are a lot of new things I haven't heard about like (Cartesian trees, various sort algorithms, etc.) So, how does one prepare for such challenges (especially the O(x) time and space complexity). What should I read to prepare for such a task?

  • Visual Studio 2010 - Faster Startup with /nosplash

    - by MikeParks
read a blog the other day about the /nosplash switch in Visual Studio. Apparently, it's been around a while and I'm a little late on finding out about it. I figured I'd share it for those of you that come across this and didn't know about it as well. Basically all it does is turn off the Visual Studio splash screen which speeds up initial startup time. It's not a big difference but every little bit helps. I choose speed over looks. You can set the switch by right clicking on Visual Studio, selecting Properties, and adding "/nosplash" on the target Property, so it will look like this: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\Common7\IDE\devenv.exe" /nosplash. Feel free to try it out and see if you like it. You can always change it back by just removing the /nosplash switch when you're done testing. There are plenty more Visual Studio switches out there but this is the main one that came in handy for me.   - Mike

  • A bacon- (and module-) saving PowerShell incident

    - by AaronBertrand
Earlier today I made a big goof. I opened a module in Notepad, intending to use it as the basis for a new module. I was in the process of using "File > Save As" when my phone rang just at the precise instant that, for some reason, made me click on "File > Save" by mistake. After hitting Ctrl+Z 30 times to try to get the old version of the module back, I remembered that Notepad has never had more than one level of Undo. Back when I was coding ASP by hand, I was very well aware of this, but I...(read more)

  • What grammatical tense should I write my specifications in?

    - by John
We are currently writing functional and technical specifications in a two column format; summary sentence and technical detail. The details often refer to an appendix with diagrams, layout designs ect. However I am struggling with what tense to write it in: With past tense as if the work is done I struggle to show highlight extensions of exiting work. Future tense as in it needs to do X starts to sound like a to do list or Tense neutral very hard as it has either going to be done or is done. To add further confusion this specification may be read by people who do not have English as a first language.

  • Missing feature in Hyper-V from Virtual PC

    - by Kevin Shyr
One thing I really miss is the ability to create shared folder between host and guest.  Virtual PC does this well, you can create Shared Folder to be used every time, or just this one.  I have read some posts on how to do this.  Some people suggest using ISO Creator to package up the files and mount the image to DVD drive, but what I need is truly a "shared" environment, so I'm currently looking into creating Virtual switch and creating an internal network between the host and guest.  Let's see how that works out. I would have loved to give Virtual SAN Manager a try, but I don't have a local Fibre Channel to set one up. I guess this might be an extension to my original post:  http://geekswithblogs.net/LifeLongTechie/archive/2011/05/05/windows-virtual-pc-vs.-hyper-v-virtual-machines-vs.-windows-virtual.aspx

  • Is HTML5 more secure to develop for than Silverlight?

    - by King Chan
I'm learning Silverlight, and I know that if I master it, I can apply the same concepts to WPF, which means I can do either web or desktop development pretty easily. But I've read articles and followed the discussion online, and I understand HTML5 is gaining traction for being cross-platform, and a lot of people seem to be moving to HTML5. From my understanding, any HTML5 application would be built with HTML and JavaScript (or Flash). But is it secure? It seems like anyone can easily use their browser's "view source" option and grab your code. Is this something I should be worried about, or is there a way to protect against it?

  • SharePoint Apps a word of caution

    - by Sahil Malik
SharePoint 2010 Training: more information Lucky for SharePoint, it is the first foray into this brave world where the browser is masquerading as an operating system. For the very first time, with SharePoint 2013, we will have apps from different vendors, talking to different domains live in the browser. Sound fun eh? Well, all is hunky dory until you consider that browsers don’t have concepts such as process isolation, encryption, obfuscation etc.. Stuff that we are so used to in operating systems that we don’t even think about it. Browsers have JavaScript, and broken HTML5 – it is not secure! In fact, in the current technology spectrum you cannot achieve anything other than laughable security at message level without involving a plugin or some sort of thick code like Java. The only security worth it’s salt in pure html/javascript scenarios, still, is transport security – and that’s it. Read full article ....

  • Places to find free software projects who need developers/project managers?

    - by MHarrison
While I have plenty of project management "booksmarts" and a handful of PM experience, I don't seem to have enough experience to get the sort of job I want. Since "I read another PM book/blog today" doesn't really count, I was thinking I could find some free/open source software (FOSS) projects who are looking for/hiring project managers or developers and see if there was anything I could volunteer for. Does anyone know of any FOSS employment sites where I might be able to find such projects? Something similar to careers.stackoverflow.com. I know I could just go to sourceforge/freshmeat and look around, but I was hoping to find some site that fills this need (and if any such sites exist, my google-fu is apparently VERY weak at finding them).

  • How can I customize my bootloader to make it prettier?

    - by Matthew
I hate how when I turn on the computer it just (after the hp logo, which I hate having also), shows white text on a black background. I'm wondering if there's easy ways to customize this (I'm choosing between Windows 7 and two separate Ubuntu 10.10 installs). I've read a little about some complicated ways to do this, but is there not some simpler ways by installing a package on ubuntu or something? I don't want to hack a bunch of code together to get a simple effect. I'm hoping for actual images and having like the windows 7 logo and ubuntu logo to choose from. Ideas?

  • Getting a job at Google/Microsoft companies [on hold]

    - by user2498079
Alot of people say it is very hard to get a job at Google/Microsoft. Due to insufficient number of jobs, there is very tough competition for fresh graduates to get a job at the worthy company. I have read certain articles which encourage fresh graduates to have good projects (Programming projects), Focus on Accomplishments or have a good reputation on websites like this one. So my question is what kind of programming projects & accomplishments help in getting job at Google/Microsoft. There are alot of other factors like communication skills & leadership etc but this is not the main concern here. Regards

  • Optimus Bumblebee Performance

    - by Chance
After installing Ubuntu 12.04 and Bumblebee, I tested out the performance of the Nvidia card using Minecraft and a few other games. I've noticed it to be way slower than it was on Windows 7. Is this normal? I'm using the GT 630m. From what I've read online, nobody has said it to be slower than Windows. I'm just really curious because I want to use Linux so much more than Windows, but if I don't get the same performance I feel really picky. The Nvidia card is still faster than my Intel graphics on Ubuntu, but it's not as fast as it was for my on Windows. I get 60 - 80 fps on Minecraft on windows, while I get 28 - 48 fps on Ubuntu. Any Ideas why? Thanks so much!

  • Topics for covering in-depth programming knowledge

    - by black_belt
I pursued my bachelors' degree in business administration, but my interest in Information Technology led me to acquire some knowledge of PHP programming and MySQL database. I find programming so interesting that I haven't applied for any job since my graduation. Currently I am staying home and just trying to acquire in-depth knowledge of PHP programming. So far I have developed couple of websites and web applications including Inventory+ Point of Sale Software and an Accounting system for small organizations. I aim to have knowledge that a Computer Science graduate should have, and for that I want to read books but I have no idea where to start from. Could you please suggest me some books and topics that I should study on? Thanks a lot :)

  • Does Hauppauge WinTVR 900H work with Digital TV in the UK

    - by SimplySimon
I have been trying to sort out my Hauppauge WinTV 900H USB Tuner. Here in the UK, we do not have Analogue TV any more as we are fully converted to digital. I have had this working in Windows a while ago, but am having no joy in Ubuntu 13.04 all I get is a blue screen and no settings for the UK. Can anyone advise me how to set this up on my laptop. I have tried: Does Hauppauge WinTV HVR-900 (r2) [USB ID 2040:6502] work with ubuntu 12.04 LTS? I am using TVTime I have also read this page, which makes me think that this unit can only receive Analogue signals, which are no longer transmitted in the UK (which could be my problem!) Laptop Specifications: Intel® Core™ i3-2350M CPU @ 2.30GHz × 4 Intel® Sandybridge Mobile 6MB RAM Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • Reasons to use C++ ?

    - by RodH257
I've read here and in other places that learning C++, C or other low level languages are a must to get a more low level perspective on development. I agree with this, but I find it hard to find a reason to use C++ over C# or similar languages. Most of the work I do is web based, so there's no need for C++ there. Other work is windows based, and most things work fine in C# there, so what sort of situation could I use C++? I don't do any high performance stuff, nor do I create games, mostly business applications. I'm looking for an excuse to expand on my C++ knowledge but I need some motivation other than 'because the internet said I should'.

  • How To Delete Your Skype Call and Chat History

    - by Gopinath
Just like every other modern application, Skype also records all the communications we exchange using it. It records instant messages, calls, file transfers, SMS, etc. and makes it easy to view using the Conversation tab. If you ever feel like getting rid of these history information, then you need to delete them. Skype provides a single click option to clear all the history from you account, but the feature is buried deep under options menu.Really deep!. To clear history follow the menu Tools –> Options, switch to Privacy Settings tab available on the left side, click on Show advanced options button and finally hit the button Clear history. Ah! You are almost done. Just confirm a popup it displays on screen and your history is vanished from your account. Join us on Facebook to read all our stories right inside your Facebook news feed.

  • Why is the superblock last mount time in the future?

    - by user69541
Future time: Since installing Ubuntu 12.04, I regularly have to fun fsck and reset my clock because it shows a 'future time' : Err.Msg. "superblock last mount time is in the future by less than a day, probably due to hardware clock being incorrectly set." FIXED. According to what I have read, it looks like I'm in the right place to get an answer. Following are my feeble attempts to rectify this annoyance: mjh@mjh-desktop:~$ sudo service ntp start [sudo] password for mjh: ntp: unrecognized service mjh@mjh-desktop:~$ mjh@mjh-desktop:~$ sudo apt-get install update Reading package lists... • replacing kernel on non-booting ec2 instance

    - by TheToolBox
So I had an amazon ec2 instance crash during the update to 14.04LTS. Frustratingly, it appears the kernel might be bad (or at least that's what the log below says to me, I could totally be wrong). I'm able to mount the volume to another, working server, chroot the broken volume, and sudo apt-get remove linux-headers-3.MOSTRECENT. Unfortunately though, when I try sudo update-grub, it comes back with /usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for / (is /dev mounted?). What am I missing? • I have Ubuntu 11.10 and for no apparent reason my sidebar suddenly will not hide, how can I reverse this?

    - by cathy
I have Ubuntu 11.10 and for no apparent reason my sidebar suddenly will not hide, I did not go into system settings or anything like that. I googled this, but everything I found had me downloading something to be able to fix it. However, as it changed without me downloading anything, I'm hoping it's possible to change it back without downloading anything. I read somewhere that I should go into "System setting", "appearance", "behaviour" and change it to "auto-hide", but I did not have a "behaviour" tab in "appearance". I would normally be able to just deal with it, but it is preventing me from being able to click the "back" button when I am in a browser. Does anyone
