• 'unknown filesystem' grub rescue prompt; trying to wipe drive and boot 10.10 live

  Im currently running Win7, and want to wipe the drive and install 10.10. I have 10.10 loaded on a USB thumbdrive and it sees the device in BIOS but it only reaches a screen saying; Unknown Filesystem grub rescue> Ive read several results from google and a couple here where people are trying to dual boot and i assume save the data on the drive, but i dont care about doing that, and would prefer to just wipe the drive and start fresh. What steps can i take to get the drive to a point where i can load 10.10 live and get it installed?

• Can't login after forced shutdown

  I am on ubuntu 12.04 and forced a shutdown (hardware switch). Now I can't login anymore. In particular, after entering my password I get sent back to the login screen. The error message is to fast for me to read. I am, however, able to login into the Guest account through the usual login screen, and able to login into my own account on tty1 after pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1. What should I try to get back into my own account via the login screen and get back to a working desktop? Update: I can login with gdm, but not with the (default) lightdm. So the forced shutdown seems to have broken lightdm. The question now is, how do I fix a broken lightdm?

  Let's assume that there are no command-line arguments. How do you pass input data to a program? I'm thinking you'd write the input to a file with a specific name, such that the program knows to open and read it as input. However, how would one discover the name of that file? Usually, running a command-line program without arguments or with some standard help argument (e.g. \?) produces some instruction on how to use it. But given an environment with no command-line arguments, how does one discover how to operate a program?

  As I'm quite newbie to this field, I've doubts and there are some I couldn't find on Google, i.e: If I'm not wrong, index.html makes it possible to avoid to add the filename to the url, www.example.com/ is equal to www.example.com/index.html. And that works for the following subdirectories, right? www.example.com/music/ Is there any other way to achieve this without using an index.html file? (I've read smth about converting dynamic urls to static: ./?var1=value1&varN=valueN - ./value1/valueN) How can I convert www.example.com/music/ to music.example.com/ and why should it be used?   I really should not be mentioning the name of the book, but the first time I read it (during my under-grad days) I almost concluded that data structure was a bad course to pick. Which brings me to the question I am asking here. What makes a programming or data structure or algorithm book tick? Clearly, lucid explanation is one. But I also realize that organization of the material is very important and so is diagrams. What else? Some pointers would obviously help when I hang out in my neighborhood computer book shop the next time.

  I read somewhere that the chain of inheritance breaks when you alter a behavior from derived class. What does "altering a behavior" mean here? Is overriding an already implemented method in base class considered as "altering behavior"? Or, does the author mean altering method signatures and the output? Note: If a moderator can move to the correct place (if I am in the inappropriate site SE) I read on various sites about licenses. I did just put the license type in the header file (in my case the javascript file - open-source). /* * "codeName" "version" * http://officialsite.com/ * * Copyright 2012 "codeName" * Released under the "LICENSE NAME" license * http://officialsite.com/LICENSE NAME */ javascript code ... In the same folder I leave a copy of the license. The listing of the folder looks like this: * codeName.js * LICENSE In the file LICENSE would leave my code uses. • 301 re-direct all external links to new domain

  I have changed the main domain to a sub-domain & would like to re-direct all external links to the new sub domain. Have read a few articles but having no luck editing the .htaccess as it might be interfering with all the rules in there. Old: www.example.co.uk New: https://secure.example.co.uk The current rules are quite handy because it seems to have sorted out the structure for all internal links. It has even updated the file path for images (or this could just be wordpress as the url was updated under general settings).   busybox initramfs prompt while attempting to install from live cd on 2nd hdd I've created a partition in ext3 on my second hdd to intall linux however when i come to boot the CD i get directed to a busybox prompt with no other choice than help. Other topics i've read on the subject where bound to the idea ubuntu has been already installed, and that the partition needs to be just indicated or else... But since i've no ubuntu installed, neither have i any partition that ubuntu should consider like that... How can i go through that?

  JSR 355, JCP Executive Committee Merge, is currently nearing the end of the Public Review period.  Review the current draft here and provide feedback here.  The review closes on 12 June 2012.  The JCP Executive Committee met face to face in Sao Paulo, Brazil earlier in May, and has published a revision (version 2.1) of the EC Standing Rules.  The EC Standing Rules were introduced in October 2011 with the launch of JCP version 2.8 (JSR 348).  Version 2.1 of the EC Standing Rules will modify rules for attendance at EC face-to-face meetings. Remote observers will be permitted in "read-only" mode but unless a member attends in person they will be counted as absent.  The review period for these changes will close on June 30 2012.  Please comment on the proposed changes by logging an issue in the JCP EC issue tracker.

  I recently found this article on a guy that built his own computer. It's just a bunch of wire (as far as I can tell any way) and I was just wondering what would I have to learn/read/do to make such a thing (or at least to have a really basic understanding of what he did). He also made his own operating system, which I find really impressive. I know it will take a while and I am in no hurry. Note: I am a web programmer and also have done some desktop apps (a few years ago).

  I've just learned basics of Data oriented programming design, but I'm not very familiar with that yet. I've also read Pitfalls of Object Oriented Programming GCAP 09. It seems that data oriented programming is much better idea for games, than OOP. I'm just creating my own GUI system and it's completely OOP. I'm thinking if is data oriented programming design applicable for structured things like GUI. The main problem I see is that every type widget has different data, so I can hardly group them into arrays. Also every type of widget renders differently so I still need to call virtual functions.

  Hello I want to write a HTML5 multiplayer game in which there are rooms with two players answering a series of questions with 3 possible answers, 10sec/question, which are being downloaded from a server. It will have some ratings and so on. I want to make it as scalable as possible. I wonder what technologies to use to accomplish that. HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript obviously. But what about the server-side? I have been researching and found that Socket.IO + Node.js + mongoDB would do the job but after doing some more research it maybe not. Can you suggest me some kind of architecture for doing this game? Free technologies, if possible. Or what to read and from where to start in order to understand how to do it. Thanx in advance! P.S. I have an experience with HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, C#, ASP.NET MVC and relational db's.

  Being a C++ programmer with 7-8 years of experience, I wanted to know the market trends. When I searched a little bit I found more jobs with keyword C# than C++ or Java.
