• Is there an open source sports manager project?

  For a long time I've tried to search for an open source manager game, but without any luck. I'm looking for a suitable project for a reference to my own pet project. Features like well designed data model, tournament and fixture generation and understandable match simulation algorithm would be a great bonuses. I'm especially interested in game projects like Hattrick and SI Games' Football Manager, although it is irrelevant what the particular sport is. The project should be preferably web-based as Hattrick is. I've crawled through GitHub and SourceForge, but I found only a few sports simulation projects. Projects, which I have found, were either dead or not fulfilling my wishes. Do you know any open source manager game / fantasy sports game project, which would be available as open source, OR at least any material, which would be useful when building a such project?

• Ubuntu Software Center: Add option to launch application after installation

  Does any body know why Ubuntu Software Center can not launch applications after installation ? All user install application only for one purpose - launch it and use. Why we need to install it and after that search it in number of menus. Even Packages are mixed with applications that why not just allow to launch only applications that put smth in menu. Example of such convenient application center - android market, ... . Ubuntu 11.10 have pretty/sexy center but .... vital function still missed.

• SDL Fullscreen and Gnome-panel

  On Ubuntu 10.10, the following SDL code cause Gnome-panel to cease updating its drawing, however it does still function (ie windows on the panel open where they should be, but you just have to know where they 'would be' on instinct/memory). I really did not care about seo while I was building the website so I guess my website has quite a 'bad reputation' for Google search. My website is almost finished and I am planning to launch it soon but would like to tell Google to forget everything it nows about it and start everything over. What's the correct way for doing it? I found Requesting reconsideration of site but I'm not sure if that's the best way to do it. Any advice?

• How do I install the btrfs-restore utility on 12.04?

  I would like to install btrfs-restore on Kubuntu 12.04 apt-cache search btrfs-restore returns nothing. Google "ubuntu download OR install btrfs-restore" returns nothing useful. Also, where do I get btrfs help? I'm not getting any replies on #btrfs on freenode.net. (Correction: I was too impatient. #btrfs was very helpful!) UPDATE: the previously accepted answer no longer works, so I unselected it as the answer. The PPA dmitrij.ledkov/ppa is missing now. Thanks to Pkunk at #btrfs, I posted a new solution below.

  On github::gist what is the star-button used for? For example here: https://gist.github.com/1372818 I have 3 Buttons in the headline, they are edit download (un)star With the last one changing from star to unstar. My first idea was: Upvote system. But I can star my own code, and I didn't mention some star appearing somewhere. Next idea: a favorite, a bookmark. I can select 'starred gists' but the page came up even before I starred it. Reading the Help didn't let me find something about 'star', and the searchbox is for searching in code, in pages - not to search the helppages of github::gist.

• Recursively rename files - oneliner preferably

  I found this answer how do i... but it simply doesn't work - it did not rename any file for unknown to me reason Before I started to search around I thought that it should be easy task even for novice penguin, but it doesn't seem so for me. For example, I simply can't tell ls to list all *.txt in all subfolders, which was surprise to me (without grep or similar). Then I found find and find . -name name_1.txt lists files fine, but for f in $(find . -name name_1.txt) ; do echo "$f" ; done splits whole file paths with space as separator, so it's unusable to pass that output to some command like mv or rename I want to ask whats wrong with above command and if possible some nifty oneliner so I can recursively rename name_1.txt to name_2.txt

• Lenovo B570 doesn't boot after installation

  I install my Ubuntu 11.10 64 Bits in my Notebook Lenovo B570. (I remove Win 7). I have no problems to install. But at finish, when it start, it wont boot. It search for another boot device (Network, CD/DVD). Maybe it issue is about SCSI Hard Drive. I try in BIOS set compatible mode SCSI/ATA. It try locate another boot (Networks, CD/DVD). I try to enable compatible mode in BIOS SCSI - SATA and reinstall again. "Will ubuntu be the only os on your computer or is there a 2nd os?" A:Yes. I remove Windows 7 and use All disc to Ubuntu.

• Convert Docx or Odt to Pdf

  Hi there, I need to find a way to convert docx or odt files to pdf on a linux web server. Therefore I'm not willing to install openoffice.org for obvious reasons. I've tried Google but it failed for me, so I'm here :-) I can't imagine there's no other solution to this problem than to install a huge chunk of binaries given that a) there are (or at least should be) lot's of packages which can read docx or at least odt and b) there are as many packages which can write pdf files What am I missing here? scratching head Regards, luxifer ps edit: I don't want to use a web service - neither free or paid edit 2: at this point it would also help to convert the docx back to doc so I could use wvpdf to generate the pdf... edit 3: of course it would also help if i could do search and replace on a doc file in the first place; or xps for that matter

• How to stop programs on starting from returning to log in screen?

  I'm not a computer nerd but have been able to fix Ubuntu/Linux problems in the pass two years with a Google search but this on has me stumped. I upgraded to 12.04 about thirty days ago and all was well except that every time I tried to load KeePassX it would go to the login screen. I installed KeePass2 and all seemed to work. Last week I tried to load Bibble5 (Raw photo editor) and it would try to load and then back to the login screen. After a few days I gave up and downloaded Corel After Shot Pro (Corel's now owns Bibble5) and it has the same problem. Could someone please head me into the steps I need to follow to find out what is the cause. • How to remove duplicate content, which is still indexed, but not linked to anymore?

  A bug in the tool, which we use to create search-engine-friendly URLs changed our whole URL-structure overnight, and we only noticed after Google already indexed the page. Now, we have a massive duplicate content issue, causing a harsh drop in rankings. Webmaster Tools shows over 1,000 duplicate title tags, so I don't think, Google understands what is going on. Right URL: abc.com/price/sharp-ah-l13-12000-btu.html Wrong URL: abc.com/item/sharp-l-series-ahl13-12000-btu.html (created by mistake) After that, we ... Changed back all URLs to the "Right URLs" Set up a 301-redirect for all "Wrong URLs" a few days later Now, still a massive amount of pages is in the index twice. As we do not link internally to the "Wrong URLs" anymore, I am not sure, if Google will re-crawl them very soon. What can we do to solve this issue and tell Google, that all the "Wrong URLs" now redirect to the "Right URLs"? Best, David

• Large sparse (stiff) ODE system needed for testing

  I hope this is the right place for this question. I have been working on a sparse stiff implicit ODE solver and have finished the code so far. I now tested the solver with the Van der Pol equation, and another stiff problem, which is of dimension 4. But to perform better tests I am searching for a bigger system. I'm thinking of the order N = 100...1000, if possible stiff and sparse. Does anybody have an example I could use? I really don't know where to search.

• What's the importance of the "title" tag?

  Talking with some other people recently, it came up an interesting topic. The core question at hand is: What's the real importance and weight of the <title> tag in a web site? For instance, what are the consequences if a site has the same <title> tag on all the pages, reporting only the site name? Or better (or worse) no title tag at all? Will that be a little/medium/huge SEO problem? How will the pages appear on search engines? Will fixing it in a later stage be problematic since pages have already been indexed? How does it compromise the overall usability/accessibility/experience? Is that a "feature" that can be omitted, or it can't even be considered a "feature" but a core element? I have quite my opinion on this topic, but I'd really love to hear what other experts (you) think about it.

  I'm trying to add windows 7 for my new 12.10 grub bootloader. • How to enable true remote login

  I don't quite know how these things are called, so a search did not product any help. I've got two computers, a desktop and a netbook. The netbook is really weak, and there's hardly any fun doing work with it, especially after ubuntu software swallows so much cpu power for nothing. But my desktop is good, but uncomfortably positioned. So I know you can use any linux system as a server to give logins. I want to be able to login and work on my desktop, from my netbook. No VNC, no SSH, full X-server, I want to be able to choose "Login on Desktop" in my login menu on the netbook and have everything as if I was there. I hope I could make my point. Is it possible in a local network? And if so, how can I easily set it up?

• Strange GTK3 issue with Audacious and Evince (Document Viewer)

  I find that, in some GTK3 apps such as Audacious and Evince (Document Viewer), parts of the UI are pure black, which looks ugly and out-of-place. It is not intentional, as the screenshots on both websites show the app looking different. I only have this issue with the Adwaita GTK theme, but since it comes with Gnome 3 and is the main theme these apps are designed for, I'm guessing the problem is not simply the theme having some bug (though the Ubuntu package might). I have had this issue on two laptops now, running both Ubuntu 12.04 and Xubunu 12.10 with Gnome Shell and Adwaita. The screenshots below show the problem: Audcious's is visible in the search area around the text box, and behind the playlist tabs, and Evince's is visible in more or less the same position and around the document itself. • Why USA produces the best / most popular software? [closed]

  Have you noticed that a disproportionate amount of popular software products comes from the USA ? Examples: iOS, OS X, Phosothop, Oracle, Windows, Final Cut Pro, MS Office, iTunes, iWorks Suite, iLife Suite, AutoCad, Aperture, Google search engine, Twitter and endless stream of software that are the best in their fields and that are the models the rest of the industry want to emulate. Few people would deny that the most popular software comes from American companies. Obviously there's plenty of good software coming from outside the US, like Linux or SAP but most great looking, killer software comes from USA. Maybe these companies outsource the code elsewhere but the inception and design is mostly done in the USA. Why is that? and, can it be replicated elsewhere given the correct "ingredients" ?

It is an open source project so I make no money off of it, so I do not really want to pay for advertisement.   after the debacle a few hours back I managed to get a working desktop after using an ethernet cable and sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop But now when I try to run ubuntu software center from CLI this is what I get rick@Abigail:~$ sudo software-center Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/bin/software-center", line 34, in <module> import gtk ImportError: No module named gtk Any guesses how to fix this. The search box on synaptic is also missing. It has something to do with module named axi. I think the both are related.

• What is the best way to restrict adult content on 12.04 LTS

  I bought my kids a PC and installed 12.04 (Unity) on it. The bottom line is, I want my children to use the computer unsupervised while I have confidence they cannot access anything inappropriate. What I have looked at: I was looking at Scrubit which allows me configure my wifi router but this solution would also affect my other PC and mobile devices. This is not feasible as I just want the solution to work on one PC. I also did some Google searches and came across Nanny (it seems to look the part). My experience of OSS is that the best solutions frequently never appear first on a Google search list so my question is very specific. I want to leverage your knowledge and experience to understand “What is the best way to restrict adult content on 12.04 LTS” as this is important to me. Please don't answer this question "try this or that", then give me some PPA, I am looking for knowledge and experience from someone in my situation. Thanks in advance
