• Should I use php mail function or phpmailer?

But then, lately I found this phpmailer, which is specially design to send email. Q1: Should I change to this phpmailer? Q2: What are the advantages of using phpmailer? • abstract class NumberFormat - very confused about getInstance()

  Hi, I'm new to Java and I have a beginner question: NumberFormat is an abstract class and so I assume I can't make an instance of it. But there is a public static (factory?) method getInstance() that allow me to do NumberFormat nf = NumberFormat.getInstance(); I'm quite confuse. I'll be glad if someone could give me hints on: 1) If there is a public method to get an instance of this abstract class, why don't we have also a constructor? 2) This is an abstract class ; how can we have this static method giving us an instance of the class? 3) Why choosing such a design? If I assume it's possible to have an instance of an abstract class (???), I don't get why this class should be abstract at all. Thank you.

  I have an object oriented PHP application. I have a simple hierarchy stored in an SQL table (Chapters and Authors that can be assigned to a chapter). I wrote the following method to fetch the chapters and the authors in a single query and then loop through the result, figuring out which rows belong to the same chapter and creating both Chapter objects and arrays of Author objects. However, I feel like this can be made a lot neater. • Base class for windows service

  My new project has a design in which there are number windows services for performing different tasks. I have been given a task to create base class from which all of the windows service will inherit. This base class will perform common functions like creating instances of other windows services by iterating through the config file (may be like Activator.CreateInstance), do event logging on onStart, onStop etc. and may contain some more functionality. Before I start developing stuff, wondering if there is any pattern already in place or someone has good understanding of how to implement this kind of functionality. Any help appreciated.

• What are some interesting fringe programming topics that might have hands-on training?

  Whenever training topic questions are asked, the answers are fairly typical, and involve a pretty limited subset of topics like OO, design patterns, algorithms, web services, SQL, etc., but I wonder if there are some fringe topics that are still applicable to the programming field and would give me a more rounded approach to development. When I think of "fringe", I think of 2600: The Hacker Quarterly articles that discuss how to use real world (sometimes obscure) exploits, or something like Maker Faire that demonstrates embedded systems programming using Arduino. I have around $1500-2000 to spend, and my job entails Java technologies, but that does not limit my options.

• How to stop worker threads in a multithreaded Windows service on service stop

  I have a Windows service that uses the producer/consumer queue model with multiple worker threads processing tasks off a queue. These tasks can be very long running, in the order of many minutes if not hours, and do not involve loops. My question is about the best way to handle the service stop to gracefully end processing on these worker threads. I have read in another SO question that using thread.Abort() is a sign of bad design, but it seems that the service OnStop() method is only given a limited amount of time to finish before the service is terminated. I can do sufficient clean-up in the catch for ThreadAbortException (there is no danger of inconsistent state) so calling thread.Abort() on the worker threads seems OK to me. Is it? What are the alternatives?

  i have small problem.... i have one content type say cars with various fields, say more than 30 , user can create the content types... now i would like to show only few fields in different phases,is there any possibility to do that. more explantaion:- user may enter the car model and car details in the first page and upload images in second page.(say a popup in the block) is this is possible ? i m newbie to drupal, i would like to do this kind of data updation, i though with designing a one more content type with the existing fields, can any one explain this issue... what if i design a content type car1 with same fields say(file uplaod) in car content type.

• MVC - Calling Controller Methods

  Hello, My application is following the MVC design pattern. The problem I keep running into is needing to call methods inside a Controller class from outside that Controller class (ex. A View class wants to call a Controller method, or a Manager class wants to call a Controller method). Is calling Controller methods in this way allowed in MVC? If it's allowed, what's the proper way to do it? According to the version of MVC that I am following (there seems to be so many different versions out there), the View knows of the Model, and the Controller knows of the View. It seems each Assembly is accompanied with its own "ClassLoader". Why like this? Is this a litte noisy? Why not just assign one "ClassLoader" to a AppDomain and use it to load all the used Assembly into the AppDomain? Isnt't this design more elegant? Many thanks.

  I downloaded the Web Deployment Project plug-in for Visual Studio 2005. I installed it. I have a project that I am working on that is a Web Application Project. The Add Web Deployment Project Build menu selection is not in the Build Menu or Solution Explorer. If I create a raw test Web Site Project, the menu item magically appears. Is this by design or am I missing something. Also, I am completely up to date on all the VS 2005 updates.

  I need make an quick estimation on project (not sure we got): It's an old banking CMS java web app: Server: jdk5, weblogic 9. Client: winXP, Ie6. It was design only for use with ie6 but now we need make it also run well on new client: ie8,ie7 on win7. I understand the most difference is the client: DOM and CSS. But my problem is we hasn't been worked with ie8, and I have not enough time to build an testing environment because our developing environment is not ready to make test (its remoting completely, and managed by another partner) Any experience or suggestion to help me weighing this task need will be welcomed.

  Ok, so the initial search in StackOverflow shows nothing related for this question. So here it goes: Let's pretend for a moment that you're just getting started in a career in computer programming. Let's say that, for whatever reason, you decide to use the .Net framework as a basis for your programming. Let's also say that you've been exposed to some programming background, but not one in .Net, so it seems foreign to you at first. And lastly, you don't have the benefit of 25 years of exposure to the Win32 API, which explains why it seems so foreign to you when you start looking at it. So the questions are: What is a comprehensive overview of what .Net is? It appears to be a combination of a runtime environment, a set of languages, a common set of libraries, and perhaps a few other things...so it's about as clear as mud. Specifically, what are the key components to .Net? What is the easiest way to understand .Net programming with regard to available APIs? Which language would best suit beginning programming out of the "stock" languages that Microsoft has to offer? (C++, C#, VB, etc.) What are some differences between .Net programming and programming in a procedural language (aka Pascal, Modula, etc.) What are some differences between .Net programming and programming in a "traditional" object-oriented language? (aka Smalltalk, Java, Python, Ruby, etc.) As I currently understand it, the CLR provides a foundation for all of the other languages to run on. What are some of the inherent limitations of the CLR? Given the enormous amount of API to cover, would it even be worth learning a .Net language (using the Microsoft APIs) given that you would not have prior exposure to Win32 programming? • Looking for a reporting tool that will allow vector graphics in output file (PDF)

  I have been tasked with evaluating our current system that we use for creating and outputing reports. Currently we are using Crystal Reports ver 8, (I know that this is and old version.), which has a custom commandline app that we wrote in C# to execute the report for a given parameter passed through the command line. We like Crystal becuase it's easy to setup and design the report. It's also easy to print and create a PDF file from crystal using our custom commandline program. One of the problems/complaints that we have is that Crystal does does not appear to have a method that will allow us to create a PDF file with a vector images, such as our company logo. Crystal Reports always converts an image into a bitmap. When the PDF is printed, the results are less than flattering, and the PDF file size is increased. Does anyone have any recomendadtions for a reporting product that we should consider?

  Hey all - I have to design and implement a Fortran routine to determine the size of clusters on a square lattice, and it seemed extremely convenient to code the subroutine recursively. However, whenever my lattice size grows beyond a certain value (around 200/side), the subroutine consistently segfaults. Here's my cluster-detection routine: RECURSIVE SUBROUTINE growCluster(lattice, adj, idx, area) INTEGER, INTENT(INOUT) :: lattice(:), area INTEGER, INTENT(IN) :: adj(:,:), idx lattice(idx) = -1 area = area + 1 IF (lattice(adj(1,idx)).GT.0) & CALL growCluster(lattice,adj,adj(1,idx),area) IF (lattice(adj(2,idx)).GT.0) & CALL growCluster(lattice,adj,adj(2,idx),area) IF (lattice(adj(3,idx)).GT.0) & CALL growCluster(lattice,adj,adj(3,idx),area) IF (lattice(adj(4,idx)).GT.0) & CALL growCluster(lattice,adj,adj(4,idx),area) END SUBROUTINE growCluster where adj(1,n) represents the north neighbor of site n, adj(2,n) represents the west and so on. What would cause the erratic segfault behavior? Is the cluster just "too huge" for large lattice sizes?

• Languages and development methodologies

  Having never worked with Ruby on Rails, I looked it up on Wikipedia. It says It is intended to be used with an Agile development methodology that is used by web developers for rapid development. This got me asking how a given language/framework can be more appropriate for given development methodologies. Are there certain languages that are more friendly for pair programming, for instance? Are there language features that make certain methodologies are more appropriate? Are there features that make certain methodologies impossible? My initial reaction is to dismiss the connection (the design process is a business process, which is more dependent on business needs that language features). But I'm an only programmer within the firm, and I'm a partner, so I get to decide the business needs. What do you think? Also, if the SO community finds that certain languages point towards certain methodologies, what methodology is most common for c#, which is what I use most of the time?

  I'm curious why only some System.Web.UI.WebControl controls implement certain interfaces when they have the same properties of an interface. For instance, there are plenty of controls that have a Text property but only the following implement ITextControl: Label Literal DataBoundLiteral TextBox ListControl (TextBox and ListControl actually implement IEditableTextControl which implements ITextControl) TableCell, Button, HyperLink and others don't so I have to write code like this ITextControl textControl = control as ITextControl; TableCell tableCell = control as TableCell; if (textControl != null) { textControl.Text = value; } else if (tableCell != null) { tableCell.Text = value; } instead of this control.Text = value; Was this a design decision or an oversight?
