• Proper usage (best practices) of Browsable attribute in .NET for runtime grid component behavior

  I understand how Browsable attribute is supposed to work. It's supposed to hide a property from showing up in a PropertyGrid in design time. It also has another effect in that it will stop a Property from showing up in components such as Grids, or specifically Infragistics WinGrid. I am not sure if it has this behaviour on regular Windows Forms grids. This works, but it doesn't sound like Browsable is being use as intended when being used for 'Run time' displaying of a property on a grid component. Any literature from Microsoft on proper use. Even though it works, I don't want to use this attribute to hide columns on a grid bound to a business object if it's not indeed the correct usage of the attribute, but rather something some grid vendors decided to use to determine property visibility on their grids.

• Circular reference fix?

  Hi! I have a Player class in a separate unit as follows: TPlayer = class private ... FWorld: TWorld; ... public ... end; I also have a World class in a separate unit as follows: TWorld = class private ... FPlayer: TPlayer; ... public ... end; I have done it this way so that the Player can get data from the world via FWorld, and so that the other objects in the world can get the player data in a similar manner. As you can see this results in a circular reference (and therefore does not work). I have read that this implies bad code design, but I just can't think of any better other way. What could be a better way to do it? Cheers!

• How can a component at designtime determine the project directory

  Hello, I write a component which should store some information relative to the project directory. Every time a property of my component is changed it should write a file. So how can a component determine the current project directory at design time. Thanks in advance EDIT: I want to generate a delphi source file every time a property of my component is changed, so that I always get the latest version when I compile my code. Think of it as a kind of code generator. At the moment I set whole path and filename where the source should be stored but I prefer a relative path to the project (or the form/datamodule which contains my component) to make it easier to copy the project on different developer machines.

• Light-weight client/server DB?

  Hello, (This question falls between programming and finding a tool, so I guess I'll ask here in SO since it has more activity than SuperUser.) I like the simplicity of SQLite, but by design, it doesn't support concurrent access. The apps I write don't have heavy needs, so I'd like to avoid heavier solutions like MySQL that are more difficult to deploy (remote customers with usually no computer personnel). Does someone know of a good solution that would offer the following features? Client available for VB.Net applications The server itself doesn't have to be a .Net application. Actually, I'd rather a bare-metal server so that it can run even on embedded Linux hosts with less RAM/CPU than regular PC's Easy install: the client part should either be statically linked inside the client application or be available as a single DLL, and the server should just be a single EXE listening for queries, à la Fossil (http://www.fossil-scm.org) clients can locate the server on the LAN by broadcasting data picked up by the server, so users don't have to write down the IP address and paste it into each client open-source, or moderately priced closed-source Thank you.

• Modifying CollectionEditor in PropertyGrid

  I currently have a list containing Call's, which is the base class. I thought of adding the following to my CustomCollectionEditor class, but this doesn't work. public CustomCollectionEditor(Type type, List<Type> types_) : base(type) { types = types_.ToArray(); } It would be ideal if I could mark up which classes the CustomCollectionEditor needed to be aware of in the DisplayList class somehow.

• Nielson's usablity scale

  Just wondering if anyone out there knows of a standard survey (preferably based off Jacob Nielson's work on usability) that web admin's can administer to test groups for usability? I could just make up my own but I feel there as got to be some solid research out there on the sort of judgments on tasks I should be asking. For example Q:: Ask user to find profile page Do I ... A.) Present them with standard likert scale after each question B.) Present them the likert after all the questions .. Then what should that likert be, I know Nielson's usability judgments scale is based on Learnability, Efficiency of Use, Memorability, Error Rate, Satisfaction but I can only imagine a likert I would design that would effectively measure satisfaction...how am I suppose to ask a user to rank the Memorability of a site after one use on a 1-5 scale? Surely someone has devised a good way to pose the question?

• Best jQuery/Prototype book for complex ajax?

  I've been working on a complex app with one main dashboard. I don't particularly like the design because it tries to do too much on one page. So the lead developer thought it would be a good idea to use ajax - because the page is so big. Refreshing part of it is far faster than loading it again. Problem is there's several ways data can be used. Adding items Editing rows Performing actions on selected rows (selected using a checkbox) Changing single items (like location, phone) My problem is making GENERALIZABLE ajax code that can operate on the data in a div, using class names to assemble the proper information for the ajax call. I did pretty well, but can't help but want to see if there's a better way to do it.

  Hi all, I was asked to design a class for caching SQL query results. Calling the class' query method will query and cache the entire set of results at the first time; afterward, each subsequence query will retrieve only the updated portion, and will merge the result into the cache. If the class is required to be generic, i.e. NO knowledge about the db and the tables, do you have any idea? Is it possible, and how to retrieve only updated/new records since the last query? Thanks!   I know why the following code doesn't compile: public class Main { public static void main(String args[]) { main((null)); // this is fine! (main(null)); // this is NOT! } } What I'm wondering is why my compiler (javac 1.6.0_17, Windows version) is complaining "The left hand side of an assignment must be a variable". I'd expect something like "Don't put parentheses around a method invokation, dummy!", instead. So why is the compiler making a totally unhelpful complaint about something that is blatantly irrelevant? Is this the result of an ambiguity in the grammar? A bug in the compiler? If it's the former, could you design a language such that a compiler would never be so off-base about a syntax error like this?

• Looking for Light Time Management Software Suggestions (for Mac)

  I'm looking for a simple project management app that performs task scheduling, along the line of Merlin or MS Project, but no where near as robustly. I don't need to deal with other (human) resources, but I work on anything from 3 to 6 different projects at a time. What I'd like is to be able to input deadlines and tasks, and have a schedule suggested to complete them. I do technical work, but I don't think I need anything specifically for software development, especially considering I do plenty of other kinds of things, like graphic design and social media PR. I'd really like this to be dead simple, as simple as possible. Suggestions? OmniPlan, something web-based? Definitely cannot afford anything too extravagant, really looking for something under $200. • How do you build a Request-Response service using Asyncore in Python?

  I have a 3rd-party protocol module (SNMP) that is built on top of asyncore. The asyncore interface is used to process response messages. What is the proper technique to design a client that generate the request-side of the protocol, while the asyncore main loop is running. I can think of two options right now: Use the loop,timeout parameters of asyncore.loop() to allow my client program time to send the appropriate request. Create a client asyncore dispatcher that will be executed in the same asyncore processing loop as the receiver. What is the best option? I'm working on the 2nd solution, cause the protocol API does not give me direct access to the asyncore parameters. Please correct me if I've misunderstood the proper technique for utilizing asyncore.

• Polling duplex does not scale... what's the alternative?

  Our tests showed that the polling duplex binding simply does not scale and can not be used on a service within a web-farm or even a web garden. We have looked at TCP/IP sockets for a client push method, but the firewall issue is does allow us to use sockets. I was wondering what is the alternative "free" solution to this problem? allowing us to scale and allowing us to push data to client... I have also tried the solution in this article http://tomasz.janczuk.org/2009/09/scale-out-of-silverlight-http-polling.html but at the end, there was too much polling on a database, and performance was affected. Our Silverlight application need a pub/sub design, but it needs to be reliable and scalable... any ideas?

• Login to SQL Server Express via development environment (VS2010)

  Seems like I'm missing something simple, but my attempts to connect to SQL Server Express have failed. I feel like I need to add privileges for my account but I'm not sure where to do it. Dev Env: VS 2010 (Web) SQL: Sql Server Express 2008 OS: XP Trying to open a connection to database returns: Cannot open database "|DataDirectory|DropData.mdf" requested by the login. The login failed. Login failed for user 'devel.' I created the database using the interface in VS 2010 (Add new item - DB File) but my ASP.Net class only covered design-time access and not access in code, so I'm not familiar with what to do. I created a user (Devel) using SQL Server Management Studio to avoid connecting as SA, but couldn't figure out how to give any SQL-level access rights to this account. Any ideas? Thanks, Cameron

  I am trying to understand on the design requirements for using Queue, and could not find this question (with answer). My understanding: Queue means one-to-one. Thus it would be used in a special case (if not rare, very few cases) when a designer is sure that the message would be intended for only one consumer. But even in those cases, I may want to use Topic (just to be future safe). The only extra case I would have to do is to make (each) subscription durable. Or, I special situations, I would use bridging / dispatcher mechanism. Give above, I would always (or in most cases) want to publish to a topic. Subscriber can be either durable topic(s) or dispatched queue(s). Please let me know what I am missing here or I am missing the original intent?

• Wiki Database, is there one?

  I was searching the net for something like a wiki database, just like wikipedia but instead stores structured content, editable by users. What I was looking for was an online database accessible by everyone where people can design the schema and data with proper versioning of both schema and data. I couldn't find any such site. I am not sure if it is my search skills or if there really is no wiki database as of now. Does anyone out there know anything like this? I think there is a great potential for something like this. A possible example will be a website with a GUI for querying a MySQL DB where any website visitor can create DB objects and populate data.

  I am planning a small, simple website to showcase myself as an engineer. My preferred language is Python and I hope to use it to create my website. My pages will be mostly static, with some database stored posts/links. The site will be simple, but I would like to have freedom in how it operates. I plan on using CSS/JS for the design, so I really just need an easy way to throw a small amount of content around. • Which layer should create DataContext?

  I have a problem to decide which layer in my system should create DataContext. I have read a book, saying that if do not pass the same DataContext object for all the database updates, it will sometimes get an exception thrown from the DataContext. That's why i initially create new instance of DataContext in business layer, and pass it into data access layer. So that the same datacontext is used for all the updates. But this lead to one design problem, if i wanna change my DAL to Non-LinqToSQL in future, i need to re-write the code in business layer as well. Please give me some advice on this. Thanks. • Receive data in same order as that of NSOperationQueue

  Hi, I have an NSOperationQueue, in which I keep on adding NSOperation objects that hit server and brings data. Is there a way to store the received data in the order in which they were fired? For example, suppose the A, B and C objects are added in NSOperationQueue in the order ABC. Now each of the three A, B and C will bring data in their corresponding threads. I want to store the results in the same order in an array so that the contents of array becomes "Result A", "Result B" and "Result C". Please provide a solution or a direction towards the right answer for this problems. Thanks Guys Basically, I want to design an autosuggest component which brings data from server (same as in google app), and I thought NSOperationQueue to be the best method to implement this. • How do I load the Oracle schema into memory instead of the hard drive?

  I have a certain web application that makes upwards of ~100 updates to an Oracle database in succession. This can take anywhere from 3-5 minutes, which sometimes causes the webpage to time out. A re-design of the application is scheduled soon but someone told me that there is a way to configure a "loader file" which loads the schema into memory and runs the transactions there instead of on the hard drive, supposedly improving speed by several orders of magnitude. I have tried to research this "loader file" but all I can find is information about the SQL* bulk data loader. Does anyone know what he's talking about? Is this really possible and is it a feasible quick fix or should I just wait until the application is re-designed?

• Reverse engineer an ORM

  Given a [mysql] database with a given schema, is it possible to generate an ORM interface for it? doesn't matter if its php, python or perl. in other words, I have a database and I have to ask it a few questions. while I could just craft a bunch of SQL queries (okay, several dozen), this is way more interesting to think about. is this a valid question, even? I have no design background with ORMs, but I've used a few (django's, symfony's, etc).

• Oracle Apex:Why is this dynamic action not getting triggered/fired ?

  I'm using Application Express 4.0.0.00.25 ( Apex 4.0 EA2 ). I've created a tabular form, with few fields. Each of the field are not direct entry, but rather a LOV picker is attached to these, and on selecting the LOV value, the id gets stored in the field. I have a dynamic action associated to the field, ( event - change in item, condition - always, action - Set value via SQL query ). However, on selecting the value from the LOV, the dynamic action doesn't get triggered. If I select the dynamic action to be fired on page load, then it works but not upon selection of an item from the LOV. Why is this so, is it by design or a bug ?

• PHP Tag Cloud System

  Hi, I am implementing a tag cloud system based on this recommendation. (However, I am not using foreign keys) I am allowing up to 25 tags. My question is, how can I handle editing on the items? I have this item adding/editing page: Title: Description: Tags: (example data) computer, book, web, design If someone edits an item details, do I need to delete all the tags from Item2Tag table first, then add the new elements? For instance, someone changed the data to this: Tags: (example data) computer, book, web, newspaper Do I need to delete all the tags from Item2Tag table, and then add these elements? It seems inefficient, but I could find a more efficient way. The other problem is with this way is, if someone edits description but does not change the tags box, I still need to delete all the elements from Item2Tag table and add the same element. I am not an experienced PHP coder, so could you suggest a better way to handle this? (pure PHP/MySQL solution is preferable) Thanks in advance,

When I was writing the code I felt that the similarities between Action1 and Action2 should warrant some sort of generalization. I've provided the UML Class diagram with the relevant parts (except for the interfaces, which I describe in code below).
