• Function calls in virtual machine killing performance

  I wrote a virtual machine in C, which has a call table populated by pointers to functions that provide the functionality of the VM's opcodes. When the virtual machine is run, it first interprets a program, creating an array of indexes corresponding to the appropriate function in the call table for the opcode provided. It then loops through the array, calling each function until it reaches the end. Each instruction is extremely small, typically one line. Perfect for inlining. The problem is that the compiler doesn't know when any of the virtual machine's instructions are going to be called, as it's decided at runtime, so it can't inline them. The overhead of function calls and argument passing is killing the performance of my VM. Any ideas on how to get around this?

The app is very simple, it's like a simplified version of the address book that came with the iphone a screen shows a list of all items in a list view list can be filtered through search list can also be favorites or unfavorites selecting an item will take the user to another screen with more detailed information (a pic, location,) the data should be stored in an xml file.   Hello, I have a problem with performance of my code under Windows Forms. Have a form, her layout is depending on constructor data, because he layout must be OnLoad or in Constructor generated. I generation is simple, base FlowLayoutPanel have other FlowLayoutPanels, for each have a Label and TextBox with DataBinding. • What is a great resource for learning about the implementation details of .NET generic collections?

  Hi all, I'm interested in understanding the underlying implementation details of generic collections in .NET. What I have in mind are details such as how the collections are stored, how each member of a collection is accessed by the CLR, etc. For collections that are analogous to traditional data structures, such as LinkedList and Dictionary, I think I have an understanding of what's going on underneath. However, I'm not as certain about collections like List (how is set up such that it is both indexable and expandable?) and SortedList, so any leads as to what I could look up to learn more about them would be greatly appreciated.

• How to inline string.h function on linux?

  I want to optimize some code such that all the functions in string.h will be inlined. I'm on x86_64. I've tried -O3, -minline-all-stringops and when I do "nm a.out" it shows it is calling the glibc version. Checking with gcc -S, I see the calls. What am I missing? • Is there a work-around that allows missing data to equal NULL for LOAD DATA INFILE in MySQL?

  I have a lot of large csv files with NULL values stored as ,, (i.e., no entry). After a lot of searching I found that this is a known "bug", although it may be a feature for some users. Is there a way that I can fix this on the fly without pre-processing? These data are all numeric, so a zero value is very different from NULL. Or if I have to do pre-processing, is there one that is most promising for dealing with tens of csv files of 100mb to 1gb? Thanks!

• How? Encrypt and Decrypt user membership passwords in ASP.NET

  We are creating a new site using ASP.NET membership provider for user registration and log in. Our old system encrypted user passwords so that we could recover them if we needed to. I am having a great deal of trouble figuring out if it is possible to use ASP.NET membership functions to simply encrypt the password when the user registers and then unencrypt it so I can see it. Documentation for this is neigh non-existant. I know how to configure Web.config to have it store passwords as encrypted ala passwordFormat="Hashed" in the provider and assigning a validationKey in the machineKey, however it seems like the password still gets hashed (though perhaps it is just well encrypted). Either way I cannot decifer how the password can be recovered (by us) if neccessary. Thanks!

• [PHP] Processing custom XML namespace within XSL

  I'm using the php class XSLTProcessor to generate HTML from a xsl. Within the xsl, I'd like all my custom namespace elements to be processed by my own processor class. So for example: <xsl:for-each select="doc/elements/*"> <doc:renderElement element="." /> </xsl:for-each> This should call the method renderElement of an instance of my custom processor class. I know I can enable calling php functions by using the registerPHPFunctions function. However, this only seems to support calling static methods.

• OpenId with Desktop Application ?

  We're using an API from a provider; in their next version, they would provide an OpenId server but mostly the users are using their desktop application. An other website we're building would be opened from this application and we supposedly would connect with openid to access the resources stored in this provider. Still I don't understand how this would work if user is already authenticated with the desktop, will they have to authenticate an other time ? What happens if they close their browser and reopen it, will they have to to do it again ?

• sigprocmask not working

  I'm using sigprocmask as follows: void mask(){ sigset_t new_set,old_set; sigemptyset(&new_set); sigaddset(&new_set,SIGALRM); sigprocmask(SIG_BLOCK, &new_set, &old_set); } and to my surprise a function which prints a big list somehow gets interrupted by the signal, even though I invoke mask() at its beginning. It looks as if mask fails, since my function doesn't invoke any other functions and therefore nowhere in its run should an unmask() happen. What can cause sigprocmask to fail?

• How to overload shutdown function?

  I am using Kohana (v3) framework but I believe it's not tied to a particular framework. What I have is basically an app with a front-end, where I want to use Kohana's native Kohana::shutdown_handler(), but I also have a part of the - RESTful API - where I don't want colourful and html-encoded exception reporting. I want a plain text reporting. The way I thought it might work is to register another shutdown function in API's controller abstract class constructor, but then I realised register_shutdown_function() works differently to set_exception_handler() and instead of replacing it adds another function to the shutdown procedure. What's worse PHP doesn't allow "unregistering" shutdown functions and that's where my problem lies. What to do, if you want to use another shutdown function instead of one already registered?

• Android and PHP - Do I need to use sessions?

  I have created an Android App that communicates with a PHP web server. They both send JSON to each other. My App is almost finished, however there is one thing left to do: authentication. Since the user's username and password will be stored in Android SharedPreferences, is there any need to use PHP sessions, given that the user won't need to enter the username/password at every request? Since I can just send the username and password in the HTTP POST header for every request, and that I will be using SSL, is this sufficient? I guess I could add an extra field in the header called 'random' that just adds a random value, just to use as a salt so that the encrypted SSL payload will be different everytime. The reason why I don't want to use sessions is that my Android App would either have to handle cookies, or managed the storage of the session ID. If there are some serious cons to using my method above, then I'm more than happy to use sessions, however all advice is appreciated. Thanks

As well as ensuring all the operations made on the phone end up in the cloud, I need to make sure the app is really responsive and the user doesn’t feel any lag time whatsoever. What’s the best design to use here? Each check box change, each text box edit fires a new thread to contact the web service? Locally store a list of things that need to be updated then send to the server in batch every so often (what about the back button)? Am I missing another even easier implementation? • How can I get around MySQL Errcode 13 with SELECT INTO OUTFILE?

  but I am trying to dump the contents of a table to a csv file using a MySQL SELECT INTO OUTFILE statement. If I do: SELECT column1, column2 INTO OUTFILE 'outfile.csv' FIELDS TERMINATED BY ',' FROM table_name; outfile.csv will be created on the server in the same directory this database's files are stored in. However, when I change my query to: SELECT column1, column2 INTO OUTFILE '/data/outfile.csv' FIELDS TERMINATED BY ',' FROM table_name; I get: ERROR 1 (HY000): Can't create/write to file '/data/outfile.csv' (Errcode: 13) Errcode 13 is a permissions error, even if I change ownership of /data to mysql:mysql and give it 777 permissions. MySQL is running as user "mysql". Strangely, I can create the file in /tmp, just not in any other directory I've tried, even with permissions set such that user mysql should be able to write to the directory. This is MySQL 5.0.75 running on Ubuntu.

  let's rope I can make this non-sujective Here's the thing: Sometimes, on fixed-typed languages, I restrict input on methods and functions to positive numbers by using the unsigned types, like unsigned int or unsigned double, etc. Most libraries, however, doesn't seem to think that way. Take C# string.Length. It's a integer, even though it can never be negative. Same goes for C/C++: sqrt input is an int or a double. I know there are reasons for this ... for example your argument might be read from a file and (no idea why) you may prefer to send the value directly to the function and check for errors latter (or use a try-catch block). So, I'm assuming that libraries are way better designed than my own code. So what are the reasons against using unsigned numbers to represent positive numbers? It's because of overflow when we cast then back to signed types?

Looking at the documentation, it says to get a basic map working I just need this: http://maps.google.com/maps/api/js?sensor=true/false Where does the API key fit in?   Hello, I have a "database solution" project in VS2008 - it generates SQL for more than one DB vendor from some sort of templates. In order to save time, I also have a tool in VS2008 configured (a Python script), which can compile an individual stored procedure. Now, with the Python script I have the freedom of processing the output and have it take on whatever form I want. I am toying with an idea of having these errors and warnings somehow recognized and populating the click-able Error / Warning list. This is what a typical Oracle error looks like: LINE/COL ERROR -------- ----------------------------------------------------------------- 324/5 PL/SQL: Statement ignored 324/82 PLS-00363: expression 'VSOURCE_SYSTEM_ID' cannot be used as an assignment target Warning: Procedure created with compilation errors. • Should I use DATE and TIME as fields rather than DATETIME

  I have a project on going for a TV guide, called mytvguide in the database - I use PHPMyAdmin. This is the structure for one table, which is called tvshow1: Field Type channel varchar(255) date date No airdate time No expiration time No episode varchar(255) setreminder varchar(255) but am not sure how to get DATE, TIME to work with the pagination script (below is the script, which works for the version with DATETIME): http://pastebin.com/6S1ejAFJ However, although the DATETIME one works - it shows programmes that air on the day itself like this: Programme 1 showing on Channel 1 2:35pm "Episode 2" Set Reminder Programme 1 showing on Channel 1 May 26th - 12:50pm "Episode 3" Set Reminder Programme 1 showing on Channel 1 May 26th - 5:55pm "Episode 3" Set Reminder but I'm not quite sure how to replicate that for the fields that use DATE, TIME functions as seen above. Any advice on this is appreciated, thanks!

• JavaScript using toString on a Function object to read text content

  Calling toString() on the function below returns different strings across browsers. I understand this is because ECMA-262 15.3.4.2 leaves wiggle room for each vendor. Chrome returns the comments in addition to all syntax. Sadly Firefox 3.6 omits the comments. Based on Firefox's behavior I haven't tested IE, Opera, or Safari. function foo() { /* comment */ var bar = true; } Specifically, I am attempting to embed meta data within a specially formatted comment block within a function. Later the return value of the functions toString() method would be parsed and values returned as an object. I've been unable to locate compatibility tables or alternatives to toString(). Does the community have any ideas? Btw, pre-processing JS files isn't an option. :( Thanks a lot. :)

• how to link static library into dynamic library in gcc

  Under gcc (g++), I have compiled a static .a (call it some_static_lib.a) library. I want to link (is that the right phrase?) this .a file into another dynamic library (call it libsomeDyn.so) that I'm building. Though the .so compiles, I don't see content of .a under .so using nm command: /usr/bin/g++ -fPIC -g -O2 -Wall -Werror -pipe -march=pentium3 -mtune=prescott -MD -D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64 -DLINUX -D_GNU_SOURCE -D_THREAD_SAFE -DUSE_STD_YUTSTRING -DNO_FACTORY -I../../../../../../../../ -I../../../../../../../..//libraries -Wl,-rpath,/usr/lib -o libsomeDyn.so some.o another.o some_static_lib.a -shared -Wl -x -Wl,-soname,libsomeDyn.so I do not see functions under some_static_lib.a under libsomeDyn.so. What am I doing wrong?

  Please not that I fully understand this is a dumb ass idea, but its not my idea. We need to deter people visiting a certain page on our site. It's written in ASP and I don'tknow ASP! Can anyone tell me how I can have a pop up box load when the URL is visited where by people have to enter a username / password. The user name / password should be stored in the javascript. (Yes I know) The only real requirement is that this happen anytime the page is loaded and it stays on that page. • Good overview tool / board for visualizing Subversion branch acitivity?

  Our team is sometimes finding it a bit confusing and time-consuming to figure out which subversion operations have been perrformed on our different branches in Subversion. Example, when has the Development branch last been merged into the Trunk? When was this particular Tag created, based on what branch etc etc. All of this information can of course be extracted from the Subversion Log, but thats always a manual, time-consuming and error-prone process. Simplest solution seems to be a simple whiteboard with a visualization of all the different branches/tags/trunk in Subversion and people drawing on it, whenever something significant happens. But we're not averse to finding some kind of a digital solution as well, stored centrally. Obviously both systems depend on people actually maintaining the model, but you'll always more or less have that. What do you use as best practice for keeping a clear view on all Subversion operations in the current Sprint (or beyond)?

• Best way to track impressions/clicks in a bespoke advertisement system?

  I've been asked to create a bespoke advertisement system despite suggesting open source alternatives such as OpenX and DoubleClick for Publishers (the former Google Ad Manager). I've got the basics of the system set up, i.e. uploading creatives, creating positions and a mechanism to place creatives within positions; however, the area I'm stuck with is impression and click tracking. At the moment an impression and click is stored with the creative, but this then means impressions/clicks can't be queried. For example, we can't find how many impressions were in position x between date y and date z. How would I go about storing that kind of data? My theory was store the creative ID, position ID and timestamp in a database table, but given the amount of traffic the site has this would produce a very large database very quickly. If any one could give me a pointer or two, that would be great.

• Will MySql caching cause performance problems?

  I am about to upload my website onto a VPS. It is a classifieds website, where all data is stored in MySql and Solr. I wonder if when using MySql:s cache, the server will slow down? Ie, if somebody makes a search for the first time, and MySql is to cache the query, will the caching make the server slower than if it would not cache anything? After the caching is done I know things will improve in terms of performance... But I would like to know if I should even use the cache or not, what do you think? Thanks
