  • How to connect to Oracle DB via ODBC

    - by Mat
I am attempting to connect to a remote Oracle DB via ODBC. I am totally inexperienced and fail to connect. What I have installed: Oracle 'ODBC Driver for RDB' A program I want to connect from (Altova Mapforce, an ETL) What I do: Under Administrative tools I open the Windows "ODBC Data Source Administrator I click 'Add..' and select the Oracle ODBC Driver The Window 'Oracle RDB Driver Setup' opens. I fill in: Data source name: free choice Description: I leave blank Transport: I choose TCP/IP Server: I input the IP address of the server Service: I leave 'generic' UserID: I enter the user name (that belongs to the password I have) Attach Statement: no idea what do do here?? Upon choosing 'OK', the 'Oracle RDB ODBC Driver Connect' opens and I am prompted the password. I enter the password and the connection fails. Questions Do I need further programs on my computer, e.g. the Oracle client of Instant client? I am never prompted the port of the server - isn't this relevant? I am never prompted SID - isn't this relevant? I connected from SQL developer easily - it prompted only server IP, port, username, password and SID.

  • What is the best desktop KVM?

    - by Mat
What is the best KVM for a programmer? I need to switch between a locked-down corporate box and my development machine rather than between servers. I've used a Black Box four port PS/2 VGA KVM switch for many years, but with the advent of USB-only PCs and DVI I need to upgrade as it doesn't play well with USB to PS/2 converters. My ideal features: USB keyboard and mouse input/output dual monitor switching four ports, but two would do at a push switch on middle mouse click, or from a keyboard hotkey at a pinch

  • Internet access using Edimax BR-6204WG as NIC

    - by Mat Richardson
My internet access at home is provided by Virgin Media via their superhub. I have a laptop with no NIC - however I do have a spare wireless router, the Edimax BR-6204WG, which I have been led to believe can be used to bridge wireless connections. Only problem is, I'm not sure how to go about doing this. The manual for the device is here:- http://www.edimax.co.uk/images/Image/manual/Wireless/BR-6204Wg/BR-6204Wg_Manual.pdf Basically, I want to be able to connect the Edimax wireless router to my laptop using ethernet cable and to use it to pick up the wireless connection from my Virgin superhub. I've managed to get so far in some ways, but then I'm stuck.

    - by Mat Banik
I have created for user file named serverDesktop.ica with following content: [ApplicationServers] XenApp= [XenApp] TransportDriver=TCP/IP Address=IP or DOMAIN NAME of the Server ProxyType=auto WinStationDriver=ICA 3.0 Username= Domain= Password= InitialProgram= WorkDirectory= ClientAudio=On ScreenPercent=100 DesiredHRES=1024 DesiredVRES=768 DesiredColor=8 [WFClient] Version=2 The above just gives the user remote desktop to the server. The question is how do I bring up all the Apps in farm via TCP/IP. The Citrix online plugin does not allow the same access as Program Neighborhood did to farms. Please help.

  • How to reformat reStructuredText?

    - by wal-o-mat
I'm writing reST in vim, which handles line breaks for me (after 80 chars). However, since I frequently go back and edit the text before, lines get ugly again. For example, in tables, it's sometimes annoying to re-format a complete table just because you need a line break in some place. So I wish I had a program that reads my ugly-but-correct reStructuredText and outputs it nicely formatted and wrapped. I found that pandoc in.rst -w rst mostly works, but it has some drawbacks. For example :author: John Doe becomes author John Doe and title formatting is changed as well. Sadly, there seems to be no rst2rst or something similar. Does anyone have some advice?

  • Setting up a home network

    - by Mat Richardson
I'm trying to get my head around how to do this with the equipment I have. Here's how it is.. I have an old laptop that has server 2003 installed on it. This has no wireless NIC, but I have a spare wireless router that I can wire to it. We have a virgin wireless router which provides the home with internet access. What I would like to do it make resources on the server 2003 machine available to the rest of the devices in the home - specifically a couple of laptops running windows 7. Ideally I'd like to be able to use the laptop as a fileserver but maybe also offer application virtualization. In the first instance however, I'd like to create a file server with the laptop and allow connections to it by the other machines. Virtualisation is just a 'nice to have'... Given the hardware I have is this possible? Can you point me in the right direction how to do what I want if this is the case?

  • Install Second Copy of Windows in a Partition, Block Access to other Partitions

    - by Mat
I want to lend my computer to my flatmate so that he can play some games for which his computer is underpowered. Is it possible to install a second copy of Windows 7 into a separate partition and configure it such that it has no access to the other partitions and disks on the computer, the ones that I use in my main Windows install? I'm not concerned about security, just want to avoid him accidentially messing with my data somehow. Can I do that?

  • rsync not using forwarded ssh credentials

    - by Mat
I have a situation where I would like to rsync some files from a remote server to a server in my office. The source server requires key-based authentication and I have an appropriate key set up on my desktop machine. If I ssh into the local server and then ssh to the remote server, ssh agent forwarding works correctly. However, when I try to rsync over ssh I get permission denied. So, Desktop -- Local server -- Remote server. When ssh'd onto the local server ssh user@remote works, but rsync -avPe ssh user@remote:/src /dest does not - Permission denied (publickey).

  • How to avoid loop limitation in a openvz container?

    - by mat.viguier
On a openVZ containing Deb7 I need to lock the maximum size of a folder, which is used to upload on a php based web server. The directory is synced, so I have to lock the maxsize. MAXSIZE should be upgradable by adding some physical disk later ... I want to use a file as a block device for a file system. So I have done : dd if=/dev/zero of=/disk2/filesystem.dat bs=1M count=100 Then, I made the filesystem on it mkfs.ext4 filesystem.dat Then I tried to mount it : mkdir /opt/filesystem ; mount /disk2/filesystem.dat /opt/filesystem My OpenVZ (it is on a VPS) has no loop module in the kernerl. So I got Could not find any loop device as usual under OpenVz So i think I have to use FUSE, but I really do not know HOW .... Any idea on locking the size of directory under OpenVZ ?

  • Windows 7 just deleted 4 days of work

    - by Mat
Hey! I'm just a bit about to freak out. I just finished a project and rebooted my computer. It didn't want to boot anymore so I had to use the Windows 7 system repair option. It ran for a minute and then booted up. Now most of my source code from the last 4 days of work is gone! Background: sometimes (most often after installing new software) my notebook won't boot up anymore. It will just show the little Windows 7 flag, but not read from the hard disk anymore. If I hard-abort and reboot then, it asks me whether to start Windows normally (which won't work) or to run "Windows startup repair". If I run it, it does some stuff for about two or three minutes and then I can boot Windows again. Usually after this, .exe files I added to the computer during previous days are gone - but other files so far were not touched. But now, after this happened, a whole bunch of ".as" (ActionScript source files) from my project are gone! Does anyone know where and whether there's a way to recover them?

  • Powerpoint: control image sequence with a slider

    - by Mat
I have an image sequence (10 images) that step by step visualize the construction of something. I'd like to include these images into my powerpoint presentation in such a way that i can step between them by moving a slider below the image, similar to the timebar of a movie player (in quicktime for example you can step through a move file frame by frame by moving the bar on the bottom). What's the easiest way to do this with Microsoft Powerpoint 2010?

  • How do I keep track of the session for each servlet request, until I use it? Singletons wont work?

    - by corgrath
For each servlet request I get, I pass, perhaps, 10 methods before I am at where I need to check something in the session and I need the HttpSession. The only way I can get the HttpSession is from the HttpServletRequest, correct? How do I keep track of the session for each servlet request? Unfortuantly I cannot simple make a singleton (ex, SessionInformation.instance().getAttribute("name")) because that session would then be used over all requests. Is there a way to store the session globally for each request without having to pass it (or it's information) down all the methods just in case I need it?

  • Eigenvector computation using OpenCV

    - by Andriyev
Hi I have this matrix A, representing similarities of pixel intensities of an image. For example: Consider a 10 x 10 image. Matrix A in this case would be of dimension 100 x 100, and element A(i,j) would have a value in the range 0 to 1, representing the similarity of pixel i to j in terms of intensity. I am using OpenCV for image processing and the development environment is C on Linux. Objective is to compute the Eigenvectors of matrix A and I have used the following approach: static CvMat mat, *eigenVec, *eigenVal; static double A[100][100]={}, Ain1D[10000]={}; int cnt=0; //Converting matrix A into a one dimensional array //Reason: That is how cvMat requires it for(i = 0;i < affnDim;i++){ for(j = 0;j < affnDim;j++){ Ain1D[cnt++] = A[i][j]; } } mat = cvMat(100, 100, CV_32FC1, Ain1D); cvEigenVV(&mat, eigenVec, eigenVal, 1e-300); for(i=0;i < 100;i++){ val1 = cvmGet(eigenVal,i,0); //Fetching Eigen Value for(j=0;j < 100;j++){ matX[i][j] = cvmGet(eigenVec,i,j); //Fetching each component of Eigenvector i } } Problem: After execution I get nearly all components of all the Eigenvectors to be zero. I tried different images and also tried populating A with random values between 0 and 1, but the same result. Few of the top eigenvalues returned look like the following: 9805401476911479666115491135488.000000 -9805401476911479666115491135488.000000 -89222871725331592641813413888.000000 89222862280598626902522986496.000000 5255391142666987110400.000000 I am now thinking on the lines of using cvSVD() which performs singular value decomposition of real floating-point matrix and might yield me the eigenvectors. But before that I thought of asking it here. Is there anything absurd in my current approach? Am I using the right API i.e. cvEigenVV() for the right input matrix (my matrix A is a floating point matrix)? cheers

  • pointPolygonTest in OpenCV 2.2

    - by Mathieu Dubois
I wanted to use pointPolygonTest but I have a problem. I'm stuck to OpenCV2.2. I tried to use the code found here: http://docs.opencv.org/doc/tutorials/imgproc/shapedescriptors/point_polygon_test/point_polygon_test.html#point-polygon-test I use findContours to detect contours in an image. Under OpenCV 2.2 returns a vector< vector<Point> >. The problem is that pointPolygonTest accept a matrix as an entry. Therefore the code doesn't compile with OpenCV 2.2: erreur: invalid initialization of reference of type ‘const cv::Mat&’ from expression of type ‘std::vector<cv::Point_<int>, std::allocator<cv::Point_<int> > >’ Under more recent OpenCV versions, the findContours function returns vector<Mat> so it's easy to pass to pointPolygonTest (see the example). I guess I could convert the vector< vector<Point> > to vector<Mat>. Unfortunately the documentation is not very clear about the format. Does anybody have an advice?

  • Calculating skew of text OpenCV

    - by Nick
    I am trying to calculate the skew of text in an image so I can correct it for the best OCR results. Currently this is the function I am using: double compute_skew(Mat &img) { // Binarize cv::threshold(img, img, 225, 255, cv::THRESH_BINARY); // Invert colors cv::bitwise_not(img, img); cv::Mat element = cv::getStructuringElement(cv::MORPH_RECT, cv::Size(5, 3)); cv::erode(img, img, element); std::vector<cv::Point> points; cv::Mat_<uchar>::iterator it = img.begin<uchar>(); cv::Mat_<uchar>::iterator end = img.end<uchar>(); for (; it != end; ++it) if (*it) points.push_back(it.pos()); cv::RotatedRect box = cv::minAreaRect(cv::Mat(points)); double angle = box.angle; if (angle < -45.) angle += 90.; cv::Point2f vertices[4]; box.points(vertices); for(int i = 0; i < 4; ++i) cv::line(img, vertices[i], vertices[(i + 1) % 4], cv::Scalar(255, 0, 0), 1, CV_AA); return angle; } When I look at then angle in debug I get 0.000000 However when I give it this image I get proper results of a skew of about 16 degrees: How can I properly detect the skew in the first image?

  • Use jQuery to find and add an image tooltip

    - by lund.mikkel
Hey people Okay, what I'm trying to accomplish is a simple tool tip that, when you hover over the name of a color, shows a little image of that color. The html markup looks like this: <label class="colorPicker"> <input type="radio" checked="" id="20" value="20" name="id[2]"> <img width="16" height="16" title=" DinoBlack Mat " alt="DinoBlack Mat" src="images/attributes/color/dinoblack_mat.jpg">DinoBlack Mat </label> <label class="colorPicker"> <input type="radio" id="874" value="874" name="id[2]"> <img width="16" height="16" title="XrayBlue shiny" alt="XrayBlue shiny" src="images/attributes/color/xrayblue_shiny.jpg">XrayBlue shiny </label> I'm using the jQuery plugin "Tooltip" and I've added following to my main js-file: $('.colorPicker').tooltip({ track: true, delay: 0, showURL: false, fade: 250, bodyHandler: function() { return $("<img/>").attr("src", [THE SOURCE FOR THE IMAGE]); } }); The idea is simply that the image should be hidden by default. But when you hover over the text the little thumbnail shows up and makes it easy to recognize the color. The problem is I haven't got a clue how to get the src for the thumbnail. I don't know how to extract the src from the img inside the selected element. I've tried various combinations using the this keyword, but nothing seemed to work. I've also tried to add the src path as a rel attribute to the label, but also without any success. Should be needless to say I also control the PHP-output... I really hope you can help me. I've search the web for days without any luck. I'm getting desperate :D /Mikkel Lund

  • using gsub to modify output of xtable command

  • R: Are there any alternatives to loops for subsetting from an optimization standpoint?

    - by Adam
A recurring analysis paradigm I encounter in my research is the need to subset based on all different group id values, performing statistical analysis on each group in turn, and putting the results in an output matrix for further processing/summarizing. How I typically do this in R is something like the following: data.mat <- read.csv("...") groupids <- unique(data.mat$ID) #Assume there are then 100 unique groups results <- matrix(rep("NA",300),ncol=3,nrow=100) for(i in 1:100) { tempmat <- subset(data.mat,ID==groupids[i]) #Run various stats on tempmat (correlations, regressions, etc), checking to #make sure this specific group doesn't have NAs in the variables I'm using #and assign results to x, y, and z, for example. results[i,1] <- x results[i,2] <- y results[i,3] <- z } This ends up working for me, but depending on the size of the data and the number of groups I'm working with, this can take up to three days. Besides branching out into parallel processing, is there any "trick" for making something like this run faster? For instance, converting the loops into something else (something like an apply with a function containing the stats I want to run inside the loop), or eliminating the need to actually assign the subset of data to a variable?

  • OpenCV. cvFnName() works, but cv::FunName() doesn't work

    - by Innuendo
I'm using OpenCV to write a plugin for a simulator. I've made an OpenCV project (single - not a plugin) and it works fine. When I added OpenCV libs to the plugin project, I added all libs required. Visual Studio 2010 doesn't highlight any code line with red. All looks fine and compiles fine. But in execution, the program halts with a Runtime Error on any cv::function. For example: cv::imread, or cv::imwrite. But if I replace them with cvLoadImage() and cvSaveImage(), it works fine. Why does this happen? I don't want to rewrite the whole script in old-api-style (cvFnName). It means I should change all Mat objects to IplImages, and so on. UPDATE: // preparing template ifstream ifile(tmplfilename); if ( !FILE_LOADED && ifile ) { // loading template file Mat tmpl = cv::imread(tmplfilename, 1); // << here occurs error FILE_LOADED = true; } Mat src; Bmp2Mat(hDC, hBitmap, src); TargetDetector detector(src, tmpl); detector.detectTarget(); If I change to: if ( !FILE_LOADED && ifile ) { IplImage* tmpl = 0; tmpl = cvLoadImage(tmplfilename, 1); // no error occurs } And then no error occurs. Early it displayed some Runtime Error. Now, I wanted to copy exact message and it just crashes the application (simulator, what I am pluginning). It displays window error - to kill process or no. (I can't show exact message, because I'm using russian windows now)

  • C++ Vector of vectors is messing with me

    - by xbonez
If I put this code in a .cpp file and run it, it runs just fine: #include <iostream> #include <vector> #include <string> using namespace std; typedef vector<int> row; typedef vector<row> myMatrix; void main() { //cout << endl << "test" << endl; myMatrix mat(2,2); mat[0][1] = 2; cout << endl << mat[0][1] << endl; } But, if I make a .h and a .cpp file with the .h file like this, it gives me boatloads of errors. #ifndef _grid_ #define _grid_ #include<iostream> #include<vector> #include<string> using namespace std; typedef vector<int> row; typedef vector<row> myMatrix; class grid { public: grid(); ~grid(); int getElement(unsigned int ri, unsigned int ci); bool setElement(unsigned int ri, unsigned int ci, unsigned int value); private: myMatrix sudoku_(9,9); }; #endif These are some of the errors I get: warning C4091: 'typedef ' : ignored on left of 'int' when no variable is declared error C4430: missing type specifier - int assumed. • Oracle Tutor: Top 10 to Implement Sustainable Policies and Procedures

    - by emily.chorba(at)oracle.com
Overview Your organization (executives, managers, and employees) understands the value of having written business process documents (process maps, procedures, instructions, reference documents, and form abstracts). Policies and procedures should be documented because they help to reduce the range of individual decisions and encourage management by exception: the manager only needs to give special attention to unusual problems, not covered by a specific policy or procedure. As more and more procedures are written to cover recurring situations, managers will begin to make decisions which will be consistent from one functional area to the next.Companies should take a project management approach when implementing an environment for a sustainable documentation program and do the following:1. Identify an Executive Champion2. Put together a winning team3. Assign ownership4. Centralize publishing5. Establish the Document Maintenance Process Up Front6. Document critical activities only7. Document actual practice8. Minimize documentation9. Support continuous improvement10. Keep it simple 1. Identify an Executive ChampionAppoint a top down driver. Select one key individual to be a mentor for the procedure planning team. The individual should be a senior manager, such as your company president, CIO, CFO, the vice-president of quality, manufacturing, or engineering. Written policies and procedures can be important supportive aids when known to express the thinking for the chief executive officer and / or the president and to have his or her full support. 2. Put Together a Winning TeamChoose a strong Project Management Leader and staff the procedure planning team with management members from cross functional groups. Make sure team members have the responsibility - and the authority - to make things happen. The winning team should consist of the Documentation Project Manager, Document Owners (one for each functional area), a Document Controller, and Document Specialists (as needed). The Tutor Implementation Guide has complete job descriptions for these roles. 3. Assign Ownership It is virtually impossible to keep process documentation simple and meaningful if employees who are far removed from the activity itself create it. It is impossible to keep documentation up-to-date when responsibility for the document is not clearly understood.Key to the Tutor methodology, therefore, is the concept of ownership. Each document has a single owner, who is responsible for ensuring that the document is necessary and that it reflects actual practice. The owner must be a person who is knowledgeable about the activity and who has the authority to build consensus among the persons who participate in the activity as well as the authority to define or change the way an activity is performed. The owner must be an advocate of the performers and negotiate, not dictate practices. In the Tutor environment, a document's owner is the only person with the authority to approve an update to that document. 4. Centralize Publishing Although it is tempting (especially in a networked environment and with document management software solutions) to decentralize the control of all documents -- with each owner updating and distributing his own -- Tutor promotes centralized publishing by assigning the Document Administrator (gate keeper) to manage the updates and distribution of the procedures library. 5. Establish a Document Maintenance Process Up Front (and stick to it) Everyone in your organization should know they are invited to suggest changes to procedures and should understand exactly what steps to take to do so. Tutor provides a set of procedures to help your company set up a healthy document control system. There are many document management products available to automate some of the document change and maintenance steps. Depending on the size of your organization, a simple document management system can reduce the effort it takes to track and distribute document changes and updates. Whether your company decides to store the written policies and procedures on a file server or in a database, the essential tasks for maintaining documents are the same, though some tasks are automated. 6. Document Critical Activities Only The best way to keep your documentation simple is to reduce the number of process documents to a bare minimum and to include in those documents only as much detail as is absolutely necessary. The first step to reducing process documentation is to document only those activities that are deemed critical. Not all activities require documentation. In fact, some critical activities cannot and should not be standardized. Others may be sufficiently documented with an instruction or a checklist and may not require a procedure. A document should only be created when it enhances the performance of the employee performing the activity. If it does not help the employee, then there is no reason to maintain the document. Activities that represent little risk (such as project status), activities that cannot be defined in terms of specific tasks (such as product research), and activities that can be performed in a variety of ways (such as advertising) often do not require documentation. Sometimes, an activity will evolve to the point where documentation is necessary. For example, an activity performed by single employee may be straightforward and uncomplicated -- that is, until the activity is performed by multiple employees. Sometimes, it is the interaction between co-workers that necessitates documentation; sometimes, it is the complexity or the diversity of the activity.7. Document Actual Practices The only reason to maintain process documentation is to enhance the performance of the employee performing the activity. And documentation can only enhance performance if it reflects reality -- that is, current best practice. Documentation that reflects an unattainable ideal or outdated practices will end up on the shelf, unused and forgotten.Documenting actual practice means (1) auditing the activity to understand how the work is really performed, (2) identifying best practices with employees who are involved in the activity, (3) building consensus so that everyone agrees on a common method, and (4) recording that consensus.8. Minimize Documentation One way to keep it simple is to document at the highest level possible. That is, include in your documents only as much detail as is absolutely necessary. When writing a document, you should ask yourself, What is the purpose of this document? That is, what problem will it solve?By focusing on this question, you can target the critical information.• What questions are the end users likely to have?• What level of detail is required?• Is any of this information extraneous to the document's purpose? Short, concise documents are user friendly and they are easier to keep up to date. 9. Support Continuous Improvement Employees who perform an activity are often in the best position to identify improvements to the process. In other words, continuous improvement is a natural byproduct of the work itself -- but only if the improvements are communicated to all employees who are involved in the process, and only if there is consensus among those employees.Traditionally, process documentation has been used to dictate performance, to limit employees' actions. In the Tutor environment, process documents are used to communicate improvements identified by employees. How does this work? The Tutor methodology requires a process document to reflect actual practice, so the owner of a document must routinely audit its content -- does the document match what the employees are doing? If it doesn't, the owner has the responsibility to evaluate the process, to build consensus among the employees, to identify "best practices," and to communicate these improvements via a document update. Continuous improvement can also be an outgrowth of corrective action -- but only if the solutions to problems are communicated effectively. The goal should be to solve a problem once and only once, which means not only identifying the solution, but ensuring that the solution becomes part of the process. The Tutor system provides the method through which improvements and solutions are documented and communicated to all affected employees in a cost-effective, timely manner; it ensures that improvements are not lost or confined to a single employee. 10. Keep it Simple Process documents don't have to be complex and unfriendly. In fact, the simpler the format and organization, the more likely the documents will be used. And the simpler the method of maintenance, the more likely the documents will be kept up-to-date. Keep it simply by:• Minimizing skills and training required• Following the established Tutor document format and layout• Avoiding technology just for technology's sake No other rule has as major an impact on the success of your internal documentation as -- keep it simple. • How to deal with the need to know multiple programming languages? When to stop learning new languages?

    - by Raphael
I am a relatively young programmer. I am 23 and I have been programming professionally for about 5 years. As most programmers I started with C, learned some x86 assembly for fun and then I found C++ which turned out to be my greatest passion in the programming world. Programming with C and C++ forces you to learn platform specific APIs, libs and frameworks all of each requires constant study and experimentation. After some time I had to move on to Java and C# as the demand on my region is basically for these languages. With these languages I entered the world of web development and then I had to learn javascript. Developing for the .NET Framework was exciting at first but I constantly felt as I was getting tied up by Microsoft (and of course the .NET Framework was driving me away from Linux). For desktop development I could do pretty much everything I did with .NET using C++ with Qt but for web development I had to look for an alternative. Quickly I found Django and then I proceeded to learn Python so I could use Django. Nowadays I am learning iOS development with Objective-C. So far it was pretty much easy to learn all these languages (C++ trained me well) but I am worried that someday I won't be able to keep track of them all. Just to clarify. The only languages I learned cause I had to were C# and Java. All of the others I learned for fun, because I love programming and learning new things. Also I like to keep my skills sharp on desktop, web and mobile development. My question is: How do you keep track of multiple programming languages? (I mean, keep track of changes to these languages and keep your skills sharp) and: Is there such a thing as enough programming languages?

  • SharePoint Content and Site Editing Tips

    - by Bil Simser
A few content management and site editing tips for power users on this bacon flavoured unicorn morning. The theme here is keep it clean!Write "friendly" email addressesRemember it's human beings reading your content. So seeing something like "If you have questions please send an email to [email protected]" breaks up the readiblity. Instead just do the simple steps of writing the content in plain English and going back, highlighting the name and insert a link (note: you might have to prefix the link with mailto:[email protected]). It makes for a friendlier looking page and hides the ugliness that are sometimes in email addresses.Use friendly column and list namesThis is a big pet peeve of mine. When you first create a column or list with spaces the internal name is changed. The display name might be "My Amazing List of Animals with Large Testicles" but the internal (and link) name becomes "My_x00x20_Amazing_x00x20_List_x00x20_of_x00x20_Animals_x00x20_with_x00x20_Large_x00x20_Testicles". What's worse is if you create a publishing page named "This Website is Fueled By a Dolphin's Spleen". Not only is it incorrect grammar, but the apostrophe wreaks havoc on both the internal name for the list (with lots of crazy hex codes) as well as the hyperlink (where everything is uuencoded). Instead create the list with a distinct and compact name then go back and change it to whatever you want. The end result is a better formed name that you can both script and access in code easier.Keep your Views CleanWhen you add a column to a list or create a new list the default is to add it to the default view. Do everyone a favour and don't check this box! The default view of a list should be something similar to the Title field and nothing else. Keep it clean. If you want to set a defalt view that's different, go back and create one with all the fields and filtering and sorting columns you want and set it as default. It's a good idea to keep the original AllItems.aspx (note the lack of space in the filename!) easy and unfiltered. It's also a good idea to keep your column count down in views. Don't let every column be added by default and don't add every column just because you can. Create separate views for distinct responsibilities and try to keep the number of columns down to a single screen to prevent horizontal scrolling.Simple NavigationThe Quick Launch is a great tool for navigating around your site but don't use the default of adding all lists to it. Uncheck that box and keep navigation simple. Create custom groupings that make sense so if you don't have a site with "Documents and Lists" but "Reports and Notices" makes more sense then do it. Also hide internal lists from the Quick Launch. For example, if most users don't need to see all the lookup tables you might have on a site don't show them. You can use audience filtering on the Quick Launch if you want to hide admin items from non-admin users so consider that as an option.Enjoy!

  • How to separate production and test assets during development?

    - by bcsanches
Hi Folks, this is like a complement for Assets Management, database or versioning system?. I am wondering about how to separate development, specially programmers assets from production assets? For example, if we keep all the assets on the same repository, how do you keep with programmers assets and final game assets? Do you keep a separate directory for each of those, allowing duplicates? Or do you use some fancy scheme for striping out the "development" and "test" assets from final build?
