• Backing up Windows 2003 Server that has Certificate Authority

  I want to export and migrate a Certificate Authority CA role from a Windows 2003 machine to a new copy of Windows 2008 R2 virtual machine. I was told that I cannot have 2 CA roles on the same network at the same time. Therefore, I must first export the certificates on the older machine, delete the CA role, then add the CA role on the new machine and import the certificates into it. As a safety precaution, I am tasked to find a backup solution in case this does not work and I need to revert back to the old Windows 2003 CA. My question is: What is the best software for doing this type of backup? I am currently trying out Symantec Backup Exec 2012. Which I hope will allow me to create a backup prior to removing CA role on Windows 2003. If this CA migration fails, the backup will allow me to revert the old machine to a time before I removed its CA role.

  I have a script, testforeground.php, that kicks off a background script, testbackground.php, then returns while the background script continues to run until it's finished. Both the foreground and background scripts write to the output file correctly when I run the foreground script from the command line using php-cgi: C:\>php-cgi testforeground.php The above command starts a php-cgi.exe process, then a php-win.exe process, then closes the php-cgi.exe almost immediately, while the php-win.exe continues until it's finished. I am trying to automate the search for a folder hot-keys that already exist. My problem is that I can't type the folder that I am looking for fast enough and all the search programs that I have used are far too slow. The hot-key search is awesome and super fast, I just can't type the folder that I am looking for fast enough. Can this process be automated? I've attempt to change it as follows: Go in to the "Mail" Control Panel applet Click the "Data Files..." button Double-click the particular email account Click the "Advanced" tab Click the "Offline Folder File Settings..." button The resulting dialog box has the "File:" textbox and the "Browse" button disabled. I've searched the registry for a match (so I could possibly change it there) but found nothing.

• Script or Utility to convert .nab to .csv without importing double entries in Outlook.

  Currently our environment is migrating from Groupwise 7 to Outlook 2003 and we have multiple users with mission critical outside contacts in their frequent contacts that will have to be imported in Outlook. Currently our only solution is to export GW contacts to a .nab, import to excel to scrub out the contacts in our own domain (to avoid double entry) and convert to .csv. This current solution will require a lot of man hours for hand holding because most of our users are not technically savvy AT ALL and are frankly too busy to do this themselves. Anyone know of any kind of tool or script to assist with this?

• Why Outlook 2007 pasted images are larger than original?

  I have been using Outlook 2007 for over a year with no image problems. Around September 1st, images that I paste into messages are enlarged in the messages. This happends with WinSnap, the Vista Snipping Tool, or any jpeg pasted into the message I tried jpegs with 96dpi settings w/o sucess I tried different Outlook Format Picture ... and Size ... settings Problem happens with both RTF and HTML messages Attached images are ok Something mysteriously changed and I cannot figure it out. I googled this to death without any success (others have the problem but there is no solution). This is driving me nuts because I snap screenshots all day long ("a picture is worth a thousand words"). Thanks in advance.

• How do I delete an Outlook calendar entry (after the meeting is over) without notifying the creator

  I have several meetings during the day and I like to be able to open my calendar and see what is left at a glance so I delete the meetings that I have already completed. If I do this close enough to the meeting time I am asked if I want to notify the creator. If I do this after the meeting has started Outlook automatically sends a notice to the creator that I have declined the meeting. I am only deleting the one instance so it is still in my calendar for the next time, however that creates an email that others must read/delete. I need to be able to remove single occurrences of meetings without automatically sending a notice that I am deleting the entry. NOTE: I am using Outlook 2007, I did not see anything in the Advanced Email Options. NOTE 2: I have seen this happen with Lotus notes as well (Like anyone actually uses that). NOTE 3: There is not a sent message created, only the creator of the calendar event will see the message.

• Internal Outlook clients prompted for OWA login when only accessing local internal Exchange server?

  Hope someone can help with this one. Scenario is an internal Exchange 2003 server. OWA front end server in the DMZ. OWA logins work fine, with SSL configured. Over the last week (3 times so far) when an internal person opens their Outlook and then tries to open an email with JPG attachments they are prompted for the webmail login. Why? Even if they enter their valid webmail OWA login it fails and reprompts once for each attachment. Once they get through the multiple login prompts, they can double-click to open the attachments, but they are all blank. Any ideas on what could cause this? Why would someone accessing an email from an internal Outlook client get prompted for details of the OWA/webmail server login?

  There are lots of answers to disable automatic send / receive for Outlook for Windows, but not for Mac. Does anyone know how to do this for Outlook 2010 for Mac? The options offer no obvious capability, I've disabled all my 'Schedules' and defined it to 'Send All' and 'Send & Receive All' manually... but nothing stops emails from going in and out of my inbox at their will! • Accessing an Access DB from Outlook via VBA

  Hi The situation: In Outlook I get a message from a server. The content of the message needs to be put into an Access db. But, there may not exist another message with the same date. So, I need to look into a db if there is already a message with the same date and time. If there exists one, then it needs to be replaced and otherwise the message needs to be added to the database. The database contains a list of current positions from the vehicles on the road. The problem: I have problems to compare a date time with a date time in an Access DB via VBA. The query I use returns no records but there is a record in the database. This is the query I use: adoRS.Open "SELECT * FROM currentpositions WHERE ((currentpositions. • Weekend reading: Microsoft/Oracle and SkyDrive based code-editor

  A couple of news item caught my eye this weekend that I think are worthy of comment. Microsoft/Oracle partnership to be announced tomorrow (24/06/2013) According to many news site Microsoft and Oracle are about to announce a partnership (Oracle set for major Microsoft, Salesforce, Netsuite partnerships) and they all seem to be assuming that it will be something to do with “the cloud”. I wouldn’t disagree with that assessment, Microsoft are heavily pushing Azure and Oracle seem (to me anyway) to be rather lagging behind in the cloud game. More specifically folks seem to be assuming that Oracle’s forthcoming 12c database release will be offered on Azure. I did a bit of reading about Oracle 12c and one of its key pillars appears to be that it supports multi-tenant topologies and multi-tenancy is a common usage scenario for databases in the cloud. I’m left wondering then, if Microsoft are willing to push a rival’s multi-tenant solution what is happening to its own cloud-based multi-tenant offering – SQL Azure Federations. We haven’t heard anything about federations for what now seems to be a long time and moreover the main Program Manager behind the technology, Cihan Biyikoglu, recently left Microsoft to join Twitter. Furthermore, a Principle Architect for SQL Server, Conor Cunningham, recently presented the opening keynote at SQLBits 11 where he talked about multi-tenant solutions on SQL Azure and not once did he mention federations. All in all I don’t have a warm fuzzy feeling about the future of SQL Azure Federations so I hope that that question gets asked at some point following the Microsoft/Oracle announcement. Text Editor on SkyDrive with coding-specific features Liveside.net got a bit of a scoop this weekend with the news (Exclusive: SkyDrive.com to get web-based text file editing features) that Microsoft’s consumer-facing file storage service is going to get a new feature – a web-based code editor. Here’s Liveside’s screenshot: I’ve long had a passing interest in online code editors, indeed back in December 2009 I wondered out loud on this blog site: I started to wonder when the development tools that we use would also become cloud-based. After all, if we’re using cloud-based services does it not make sense to have cloud-based tools that work with them? I think it does. Project Houston Since then the world has moved on. Cloud 9 IDE (https://c9.io/) have blazed a trail in the fledgling world of online code editors and I have been wondering when Microsoft were going to start playing catch-up. I had no doubt that an online code editor was in Microsoft’s future; its an obvious future direction, why would I want to have to download and install a bloated text editor (which, arguably, is exactly what Visual Studio amounts to) and have to continually update it when I can simply open a web browser and have ready access to all of my code from wherever I am. There are signs that Microsoft is already making moves in this direction, after all the URL for their new offering Team Foundation Service doesn’t mention TFS at all – my own personalised URL for Team Foundation Service is http://jamiet.visualstudio.com – using “Visual Studio” as the domain name for a service that isn’t strictly speaking part of Visual Studio leads me to think that there’s a much bigger play here and that one day http://visualstudio.com will house an online code editor. With that in mind then I find Liveside’s revelation rather intriguing, why would a code editing tool show up in Skydrive? Perhaps SkyDrive is going to get integrated more tightly into TFS, I’m very interested to see where this goes. The larger question playing on my mind though is whether an online code editor from Microsoft will support SQL Server developers. I have opined before (see The SQL developer gap) about the shoddy treatment that SQL Server developers have to experience from Microsoft and I haven’t seen any change in Microsoft’s attitude in the three and a half years since I wrote that post. I’m constantly bewildered by the lack of investment in SQL Server developer productivity compared to the riches that are lavished upon our appdev brethren. When you consider that SQL Server is Microsoft’s third biggest revenue stream it is, frankly, rather insulting. SSDT was a step in the right direction but the hushed noises I hear coming out of Microsoft of late in regard to SSDT don’t bode fantastically well for its future. So, will an online code editor from Microsoft support T-SQL development? I have to assume not given the paucity of investment on us lowly SQL Server developers over the last few years, but I live in hope! Your thoughts in the comments section please. • Outlook errors and blank address book?

  I have a user with a fresh install of Windows 7 64 bit. Office 2010 was installed also. Everything worked great until we installed Adobe Pro 9 and Wordperfect 12. (for outlook we are not using exchange). Then Outlook popped an error saying could not start Outlook. I then modified it to run in compatibility mode and Outlook starts. Then took compatibility mode off and outlook continues to start without difficulty. However, her address book went blank (contacts are all there). In the properties of the contact folder it is checked (and grayed out) to include this folder in the address book, and the Outlook address book is listed when I look at account properties. I tried creating a new profile to no avail. I tried creating a new profile and creating a new pst file - to no avail. I tried uninstalling office, removing the folders inside roaming and local, reinstalled office; got the same could not start Outlook error - did the compatibility mode bit and got it to start - but the Address book continues to be empty. Has anyone run across this before? I'm thinking that there must be some other preferences type folder other than those in Roaming and Local since her signature remained when I reinstalled Office.

• Outlook 2007 OST File Indexing and OneNote 2007 Indexing are Broken

  I'm running Outlook 2007 under Windows 7 Home Premium RTM. My OST file was previously being properly indexed but eventually searches significantly slowed down so I suspected a problem. Searching and indexing appears broken in OneNote 2007 as well as search time is now significantly longer. I brought up the Outlook 2007 Search Options dialog and noticed that my mailbox (running from an Exchange 2007 server) wasn't listed in the "Index messages in these data files:" list box. Next I ran the Windows "Find and fix problem with windows search" wizard which reported no errors. Then I brought up the Windows Indexing Options dialog which shows Outlook listed (as shown here): then clicked Advanced and Rebuilt the index. No dice - the listbox in the Outlook 2007 dialog still didn't show my mailbox. When I clicked the Modify button in the Indexing Options dialog I see the following: When I hover over the "oneindex://..." entry, the alt text indicates "This location is currently unavailable". When I delete it and rebuild the index, this entry returns. UPDATE: Comparison of the last screenshot above with a working PC shows that on the broken PC, the lower half of the dialog lists Outlook but neither Outlook or OneNote are showing in the upper half. The working PC has Outlook and OneNote in both parts of the dialog.

  Hi everyone, I am using Office 2007 and I would like to use VBA to paste a range of formatted Excel cells into an Outlook message and then mail the message. In the following code (that I lifted from various sources), it runs without error and then sends an empty message... the paste does not work. Can anyone see the problem and better yet, help with a solution? • Outlook locking network connection/session?

  Scenario: We have an 'automatic orders' machine sat in the corner running XP with Outlook 2003. Its job is to check for new emails on a specific account, when it encounters one it checks the e-mail body for specific wording to determine which customer it is from (using a macro), then it checks the attachment for specific order codes before parsing the attachment to create a .csv file (which is then e-mailed onto one of the sales team) before importing the .csv into our bespoke ERP/Sales Order system to create an order. Problem: Periodically the machine will have symptoms of a lost network connection (unable to connect to any network source). Sometimes after several days, sometimes over a week. Volume of emails/orders processed does not seem to be linked. Additional info: The machines .pst is stored on a mapped network location. The .csv created is stored on a mapped network location. This is a workgroup, not a domain. All network drives are Samba shares from an Ubuntu fileserver. Our bespoke system runs from a database (MySQL) Ubuntu server. Our troubleshooting so far: I have switched machines (previous was Win2000) with the same symptoms. Restarting the machine FIXES the problem. Closing Outlook and then end tasking an Outlook.exe background process FIXES the problem. If you close Outlook, without end taking the background process, outlook will not reopen (saying it cannot find the pst file & it will not open any network location). Does Outlook have some kind of 'max session' linking it to network activity that is not closing after a mail request? Could Auto-archive be causing this? Is there a tool to check/display what each outlook.exe process is doing? Have not found many ways to troubleshoot this yet, as it is so infrequent...

• Problems when pasting Outlook 2010 signature logo into message body

  Whenever I paste my company logo into a message in Outlook 2010, I run into a variety of complications and anomalies. The dimensions of my original logo image are 315x174 (source image is a PNG file). I am scaling this image down in Photoshop CS6 to a variety of smaller sizes for testing my Outlook signature (300x166, 250x138, 200x110,150x83 and 100x55 pixels). 300x166 = no distortion. This looks the same as in Photoshop (but far too large to use in my signature). 250x130 = distorted (gets stretched much wider by Outlook when pasting into message body). 200x110 = looks reasonable, but seems to have been scaled to a different size (smaller) by Outlook for no obvious reason. 150x83 = for some reason, this is scaled by Outlook to the exact same size that 200x110 was scaled to. In fact, a large range of similar dimensions are scaled to the exact same image size by Outlook. This is very frustrating. Why is this happening and what can be done to prevent it? 100x55 = when pasting my logo from Photoshop to Outlook with these dimensions all that happens is the cursor jumps forwards about an inch on the screen, leaving a blank space where the image was supposed to go. Any advice would be much appreciated.

• Exchange 2010 - Certificate error on internal Outlook 2013 connections

  I have an Exchange 2010 and Outlook 2003. The exchange server has a wildcard SSL certificate installed *.domain.com, (for use with autodiscover.domain.com and mail.domain.com). The local fqdn of the Exchange server is exch.domain.local. With this configuration there is no problem. Now I started upgrading all Outlook 2003 to Outlook 2013, and I start to get consistently a certificate error in Outlook : The Name on the security certificate is invalid or does not match the name of the site I understand why I get that error: Outlook 2013 is connecting to exch.domain.local while the certificate is for *.domain.com. I was ready to buy a SAN (Subject Alternate Names) Certificate, that contains the three domains exch.domain.local, mail.domain.com, autodiscover.domain.com. But there is a hindrance: the certificate provider (in my case Godaddy) requires that the domain is validated as being our property. Now it is not possible for an internal domain that is not accessible from the internet. So this turns out not to be an option. Create self-signed SAN certificate with an Enterprise CA is an other option that is barely viable: There would be certificate error with every access to webmail, and I had to install the certificate on all Outlook clients. What is a recommended viable solution ? Is it possible to disable certificate checking in Outlook ? Or how could I change the Exchange server configuration so that the public domain name is used for all connections ? Or is there another solution I'm not thinking of ? Any advice is welcome.

• Sync Local ICS File with Android via Exchange/Outlook

  At my company we have a 3rd party app which tracks off-hours duty for all of our engineers. The app is not web-enabled and we cannot make any changes to it. It does write a simple text file and I have created an app that translates that to an ICS file. My goal is to have that appear on my calendar on my Android phone. Here is the path I am working on: DutyApp -- TextFile -- ICSFile -- Outlook(exchange) -- Android (via exchange sync) My problems: If I place the ICS file on our FILE server and then in Outlook if I go to the option CalendarOpen CalendarFrom Internet it shows up in Outlook and looks pretty good. After a couple minutes it shows up on my Android phone as well. If I change the original ICS file those changes never display in Outlook and never sync to my Android phone. This seems to be a one shot deal almost like an import. Now if I place the ICS file on our WEB server and then in Outlook if I go to the option CalendarOpen CalendarFrom Internet and use webcal:\ as the address, it shows up in Outlook and also looks pretty good. Any changes I make to the original ICS file display in Outlook. However the entire calendar never shows up in Android. This calendar is a subscription and it seems, although am not sure, that Android doesn't display Exchange subscription calendars. Yes I know it works with Gmail subscription calendars but this is Exchange. So my question is what other options are there? We are behind a firewall so cant link the ICS file to a Gmail account. I can't put the ICS file anywhere else other than our file or web server.

• Outlook 2010 Crashing Unpredictably

  Very often when I open up Outlook 2010 and start doing actions in it, it will hang and become non responsive. I have tried letting it finish, but it never does come back (up to 20 minutes of letting it try). I generally have to restart Outlook and try again. Usually after about an hour of doing this, Outlook somehow snaps out of it and works for the rest of the day. It's generally in the morning (though I doubt that's the key variable). Generally, the emails that cause problems are HTML/formatted, but not always. What I've done so far to troubleshoot: Install Latest Outlook Hotfix (I think Dec 14, 2010) Start Outlook in Safe Mode Neither of those steps seem to make a difference. Usually - after about 10-15 restarts of Outlook on any given day, then it starts working thereafter. My next step is to uninstall/reinstall Office 2010, but I'm hoping someone has seen this and knows what to do about it - though not sure. My configuration is like this: Microsoft Online Services (using Microsoft's Sign In App) - Connecting to Exchange I have two other Exchange accounts in this profile (new feature in 2010) connected through Outlook Anywhere. Life Meeting Conferencing Add In I've disabled the People tab/add in. I've disabled the "Send to Bluetooth" add-in. Not sure what else to do. Thanks in advance.

  Very often when I open up Outlook 2010 and start doing actions in it, it will hang and become non responsive. I have tried letting it finish, but it never does come back (up to 20 minutes of letting it try). I generally have to restart Outlook and try again. Usually after about an hour of doing this, Outlook somehow snaps out of it and works for the rest of the day. It's generally in the morning (though I doubt that's the key variable). Generally, the emails that cause problems are HTML/formatted, but not always. What I've done so far to troubleshoot: Install Latest Outlook Hotfix (I think Dec 14, 2010) Start Outlook in Safe Mode Neither of those steps seem to make a difference. Usually - after about 10-15 restarts of Outlook on any given day, then it starts working thereafter. My next step is to uninstall/reinstall Office 2010, but I'm hoping someone has seen this and knows what to do about it - though not sure. My configuration is like this: Microsoft Online Services (using Microsoft's Sign In App) - Connecting to Exchange I have two other Exchange accounts in this profile (new feature in 2010) connected through Outlook Anywhere. Life Meeting Conferencing Add In I've disabled the People tab/add in. I've disabled the "Send to Bluetooth" add-in. Not sure what else to do?

The upgrade has now completed and we can start taking advantage of some of the new features which is the reason for this post. For a long time we have used the sample Robocopy script from the SQLCat team to synchronize some of our larger SSAS databases. • How to get the sending email address from outlook 2007

  I am working on outlook add-in project using Visual studio 2008 for MS Outlook 2007 in C#. Here I am explaining my problem... I got multiple accounts (3 Accounts) with my outlook 2007. I need to get accounts form Account box in New Mail Message window. When we click New Mail Message, a new window will appear from which we can send a new mail. Here (On this window) we can see Account Dropdown (Left side) under the Send Button. If we have multiple accounts with outlook, we can see all the accounts in Account Drop Down if we click on Account Box. If we click on the particular email, a right mark will appear to that Email Account and a message can bee seen on the top of the Send button is "This message will be sent via [email protected]". So, I want to get these email accounts into a string and that particular email account (which has right mark) into another string. I got these 3 email accounts into a string. But, I am not getting the particular email account(which has the right mark when we send a new email).
