• Two mail servers, need help with dns configuration for the backup one

  I need to run a redundant backup mail server in case the main one goes down. The settings in GoDaddy look something like the following: A (Host) Host Points to @ ip address of mail1 41.x.x.x mail1 ip address of mail1 41.x.x.x mail2 ip address of mail2 196.x.x.x MX Priority host points to 10 @ mail1.mydomain.com 20 @ mail2.mydomain.com When mail1 goes down, mail2 is able to get emails. I can access it through the browser with no problem, but I want my users to able to pop3/smtp as well without changing anything in their outlook. I dont want any impact to the users when mail1 is down. Also, I'm using the windows server DFS to keep both folders of the mails in sync. Is this the right way, or should I be using something else?

• Why do LCD screens need a backlight? (seriously)

  Bare with me on this, I'm well aware that most LCDs have backlights. But what if, they DIDN'T? I spend long hours in front of a screen and I hate the concept of staring into a lightbulb all the time and my eyes getting sore. I need to get a new lcd (some sort of IPS that doesn't cost a fortune) soon, but no matter what I'll get, I'll still be looking at a damn light. How come you can read on a kindle w/o a backlight but there aren't any monitors like that? I mean, ideally, a screen should be like a book or any other object in real life.   Ok Here is where I am... I have an HP Proliant with 8 Drives configured as RAID5, and C:\Drive Disk 0 and D:\ drive Disk 1. I need to add more space to Disk 0 (C:) and have 150GB available on Disk 1 (D:). I tested the Disk Mgmt on D:\ and freed up 4GB which now shows to be Unallocated. How do I add the 4GB of Unallocated to the c:\? When I click on C:\ the Menu shows "Extend Volume" as Grayed Out not Black but the D:\ Drive shows Extend Volume as selectable/black.

  What do you need to know to at the very least get your foot in the door? We're assuming for someone who doesn't have a college degree (yet) but will eventually get one. My guess is html, css, javascript, and php, and photoshop and dreamweaver, and sql. And being familiar with using a web host to have sites live, like knowing how to use cpanel. It's probably a very inaccurate and narrow guess but that's what i think right now. I don't know exactly.

  Hello, I'm planing to build a little linux homeserver. It will mainly be used for storage and maybe as an media pc. I plan to build a software raid5 with 4 1.5TB or 2TB hard drives. I already decided to use the Western Digital Caviar Green 1.5 TB drive, but then I read about some problems with the WD green series about many drives failing and that they are not recommended for raid anyway. Of course, I couldn't find much facts on the issues so I thought I just ask here ;-) What hard drives would you recommended for a software raid5 setup? As I only need it for storage, the whole thing doesn't have to be too fast. So I prefer a cheap price and silence to great performance.

  Need to clone and restore existing 64GB HDD onto a 256GB HDD, can't manage to gain access to the internals of this laptop. I checked with Samsung, they do not make manuals available nor will they help over the phone as to how to remove the bottom cover of this Samsung NP900X1A Laptop. They did offer to sell me a manual BUT they are out of stock for another 10-15 days. I saw the screws under the 4 rubber feet and 4 rubber grommets, all removed but the cover is still on. • Need an alerting system if my cloning script fails

  I've configured a nightly rsync to mirror one server to a standby offsite backup server. The total datastore on the primary is 1.5TB. In the course of getting this working, I ran into numerous instabilities with the environment, which I seem to have sorted out, but even though it's now working, I am still nervous. This is intended to be a disaster-scenario standby server, and if disaster strikes and the standby does not have all the proper data synchronized, I'm out of a job. Thus, I want to script a system that will confirm, after each nightly sync, that the destination data matches the source. I realize that rsync does this, but if rsync doesn't complete fully (which was happening during the setup troubleshooting), I need to know. Any suggestions? I'm best with Ruby, if that is relevant for the solution.

• Need to know who is hogging my bandwidth?

  I have an ethernet connection to my iMac and with Internet sharing I am broadcasting the wireless network from my mac rather than using a wireless router. I use it to connect other devices wirelessly to the internet. But this makes all the traffic flow through my iMac. I wanted a way to analyze the traffic so that I know what connected devices are hogging the bandwidth at a given time and from which websites? I installed wireshark for mac and played around a little but it seems like an overkill when you first look at it. Can someone please help with few instructions to get what I need or any other way other than using wireshark? Thanks Dev.

• Need to move a debian server from i686 to x86_64 architecture

  I have a debian server that I need to move from one hosting provider to another. I don't really know how the old server was setup, all I know is that it's running a Ruby on Rails application with a lot of custom libraries installed and that I should prepare myself for a painful migration. Old server: -os: debian 5.0.9 -used disk space: 3.2GB -architecture: i686 New server: -os: debian 5.0.9 -free disk space: 10GB -architecture: x86_64 As you can see the problem is that the servers are running different architectures. Q: Is there anyway I could somehow migrate the old to the new server in a few steps (or am I just dreaming I could) ? I was thinking maybe I could: -get list of packages and gems installed on old server and use for loop to install them all on the new -copy the disk content from old to new server while excluding what is architecture-specific (the problem is that I don't really know what to exclude).

• Need to automount dvd or cdrom at fixed mount point in Ubuntu 11.04

  Ubuntu 11.04, by default, automounts a cdrom or dvd at /media/<vol_name>. I need to make the automounting system use a fixed name instead of the volume name for all CDs or DVDs inserted into this particular drive, e.g. "/media/op-drive0". A bit of searching turns up pretty much the same solution I used, successfully, on an older, gentoo box, which is to create an fdi file for hal, along the lines of the instructions at https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=91450. This doesn't seem to work on this box. Other sources say to use the gnome-mount utility to set the mounting properties. Ubuntu 11.04 doesn't know about the gnome-mount program. Any ideas?

• Virtual hosts and subdomains, need configuring on live, not on dev

  I have a query about subdomains and virtual hosts. On my dev server, I ca nset up a new virtual hosts and point it to a subdomain, ie: newdomain.mydevserver.com All is fine and I can access 'newdomain/mydevserver/com' I can also do 'host newdomain.mydevserver.com' However, when I do the same with my main server I get the server couldn't be contacted error - I'm guessing that's because i need a cname or a record for the DNS. My question is, why does it seem that i can create subdomains on my dev but not on my live server? Help appreciated, many thanks!

• Need advise on linking apache and tomcat

  I have been searching this for hours with no luck. I have a web server that uses https on Apache2. I also have installed tomcat7 on the same server to run some Java webapp on it. I need to keep my https port 443 on Apache but forward the requests to the Java webapp to tomcat. I tried to use mod_jk to redirect the requests to tomcat but I failed. Most tutorials talk about redirecting plain http requests not https. I also could not let tomcat use https on 8443. I'm following the steps here but facing errors. The question: Can I redirect https traffic to tomcat without installing https on tomcat? Is there a good tutorial you can recommend to me?

I want to limit the computers that can access the windows server computer to authorized computers only. The authorized computers won't have static IPs, so I cannot limit them on basis of IP address. What I'm doing right now is creating two vars: one for store user name and the other for store password.   I need to configure default gateways for four separate physical network interfaces for a FreeBSD Webserver. Basically, this is a web server that needs to be accessed by multiple WANS. I've been using various online resources, and a combination of setfib, pf, and ipfw. This web server will be deployed in multiple sites where access to next hop router info is not available, so we can't use static routes. We've used setfib to successfully create multiple routing tables and can ping beyond every default gateway we've created. Using setfib # ping ip.addr.what.ever we can ping anything available on a wan and beyond the router. The problem is we can't get Apache web server (port 80) traffic to route out when external users access the server(box). Multiple people have examples of binding setfib to ipfw commands, but none of them seem to work.

  This may not be the right place, but since it is a more technical aspect of the hosting world, I am taking the liberty to ask: I'm currently running a virtual server with nginx and postfix for web and e-mail, but I can't handle the administration and, due to frequent problems with e-mail services, I need to resolve this with a almost-standard hosting package (anything should work, even 5 MB static files would be OK). The exception being that I would like to use several domains, hosted with different registrars, for web and e-mail. Currently, this is a very simple configuration in my setup. All hosters I have looked at seem to think this a costly business (more than domain registration costs), but of course the recommend to transfer domains to them (they want the $$). Does anyone know of a hosting company that allows its customers to freely manage domains registered somewhere else?

  Possible Duplicate: Prevent mail being marked as spam I have an Ubuntu server that I want to be able to send out several thousand emails each containing a generic header and an unique pdf attachment containing an invoice. What I want to know is what would be the best way to accomplish this? Also, are there any other programs I need to install such as anti-virus / verification tools? I would like to be able to know what the procedures for this normally are as I would prefer that the emails are not send to the junk folder of the clients receiving the emails. • Need an expert advice on *X display manager, window manager and composit manager combination

  Hello! I have fought with myself whether or not i should ask this question but I find myself stuck and I need another expert opinion. I can't seem find the right combination of display and window manager (and composit manager). I have tried so many different combinations but most of them don't work for me. I have been working with Linux for a few years now and currently I'm running Gentoo with GDM, Openbox(stand alone, Gnome aware) and xcompmgr. But I have tried Metacity, Awesome and Fluxbox with and without Compiz, but always with GDM. What I want: A lightweight, HIGHLY configurable environment that doesn't rely on mouse-input too much (except for web browsing and image processing). At 95% I work with multiple consoles and desktops on multiple screens. What makes me ask is that most lightweight environments seem somewhat "unfinished" and show unexpected behavior quite often. And of course I want an environment that's not TOO ugly to look at as I use it at an average of 10 hours a day. :) Any thoughts? What do you use in a similar situation? Thanks for any advice! (Please excuse my english as I'm from Germany, btw greetings from Berlin ;)))

• Need clear steps on how to convert a Windows 2000 Server to a XenServer VM

  The source system is not local. The target host running XenServer is not local. The source system is running Windows 2000 Server SP4 and has 1 disk split into 6 partitions, all NTFS: C: 6 GB (boot) D: 15 GB E: 6 GB F: 6 GB G: 5 GB H: 26 GB Most of the partitions are mostly mostly full ( 60%). What is the most straightforward way to do a P2V migration of the server? I can do minor database & data syncs after the P2V is successful & running as a VM within XenServer, it's just getting to that point which is not clear. The option of installing a Windows 2000 Server from scratch is not available, I need to convert the existing physical server as-is into a VM to be hosted within a XenServer environment. I've looked at XenConvert but it maxes out on converting only 4 partitions in one shot, and I'm not certain how to account for the 2 extra partitions. I'm not familiar with XenServer but it's my only option right now to go P2V.
