• PHP Curl's Proxy feature causes no information to be returned

  I'm working on a PHP script right now which sends requests to our school's servers to get real-time information about class sizes for different courses. The script runs perfectly fine when I don't use a proxy, returning a string full of course numbers and available seats. However, I want to make this a service for the students, and I'm afraid that if I make too many requests my ip will get blocked. So I'm attempting to do this through a proxy, with no success. As soon as I add the CURLOPT_HTTPPROXYTUNNEL and CURLOPT_PROXY fields to my requests nothing gets returned. I'm not even sure how to troubleshoot it at this point since I'm not getting an error message of any kind. Does anyone know what's going on or how to at least troubleshoot it?

• No speed-up with useless printf's using OpenMP

  I just wrote my first OpenMP program that parallelizes a simple for loop. I ran the code on my dual core machine and saw some speed up when going from 1 thread to 2 threads. However, I ran the same code on a school linux server and saw no speed-up. After trying different things, I finally realized that removing some useless printf statements caused the code to have significant speed-up. Below is the main part of the code that I parallelized: #pragma omp parallel for private(i) for(i = 2; i <= n; i++) { printf("useless statement"); prime[i-2] = is_prime(i); } I guess that the implementation of printf has significant overhead that OpenMP must be duplicating with each thread. What causes this overhead and why can OpenMP not overcome it?

• Pass a variable to a Symfony Form

  Hi, I am building a web application using Symfony 1.4 and Doctrine for a school and I want to make a very simple form to add a course to a student. The main problem I have is that in the drop down list I only want to show the courses in which the student is currently not enrolled. I already have a function in the model (in Student.class.php) which returns all the courses in which the student is not enrolled but the problem is I don't know how to pass the student to the configure() of the form. I have tried several options like passing it with the constructor of the form to a global variable or a special set method but none of them have worked. Is there any form to pass the student to the configure() method? Thanks!

  Hi guys! so as title says, I would like to hear your advices what are the most important questions to consider and ask end-users before designing database for their application. We are to make database-oriented app, with special attenion to pay on db security (access control, encryption, integrity, backups)... Database will also keep some personal information about people, which is considered sensitive by law regulations, so security must be good. I worked on school projects with databases, but this is first time working "in real world", where this db security has real implications. • Streaming Media Server and Hosting

  My partner and I have a webcam site that basically runs the old-school method....Every 0.5 seconds the javascript reloads the image in the browser from the webcam. However we are wanting to upgrade to a streaming media server to get higher quality video, and possibly audio. We aren't tied to any one specific file format or server type, as of right now we are leaning towards slicehost (as scalability is important), and installing darwin streaming server or wowza. This is meant to be a live stream. Does anyone have any suggestions for hosts/server software?

I would like to solicit opinions from this forum as to what your professional expectations are as regards an entry level position in working in the database realm... I see many job opportunities that require a minimum of 2 or more years experience, how does one go about obtaining this experience (I have tried very hard to maintain a minimum 3.70+ GPA) but have ZERO work experience in this field... I spend non school time working in VB and SQL to try and increase my proficiency. I have considered postponing my job search until I obtain certifications from brainbench etc...   I'm building a web semantic project that gathers the maximum ammount of historic data about a certain company and tries to predict its future market stock values. For data I have the historic stock values (not normalized), news (0 to 1 polarity) and subjective content (also a 0 to 1 polarity). What is the best AI system to train and use for this kind of objective? Is a simple NN with back-propagation training the best I can hope for? update: Everyone is concerned about the quality of this system. Although I'm pretty sure the system is as good as a random prediction (or even worse), this is a school project around artificial intelligence and web semantics. Therefore I'm only concerned in picking the best kind of train method for the data I have (NN, RBF, SVM, Bayes, neuro-fuzzy, etc). Its not about making money.

  hi guys, i know implementing database is a huge topic, but i want to have a basic understanding of how database systems works (e.g. memory management, binary tree, transaction, sql parsing, multi-threading, partitions, etc) by investigating the source code of the database, since there are a few already proven very robust open source databases like mysql, sqlite and so on. however, the code are very complicated and i have no clue where to start. also i find that the old school database textbooks are only explaining the theory, not the implementation details. Can anyone suggest how should i get started and is there any books that emphasis on the technology and techniques of building dbms used in modern database industry? Thank in advance!

  Hi, I'm using access 2007 and i am trying to set up a database to act as a library system, i need a function that automatically calculates a date 14 days after a given date i.e. Loan Date vs. Due Date. But the library is open only on certain Days. So i need the 14 days not to include the dates that are out of hours, like weekends and school holidays etc. I think i need to use Select Case or IIF's? So now I've got two tables, TABLE1: ACCNO BAL1 BAL2 11111 20 10 And TABLE2 (which has the ACCNO key, of course) related rows to '11111': DATENUM AMT 1 -5 2 -10 3 8 4 -23 5 100 6 -120 7 140 Now I have to find the new BAL1 and BAL2 using the following rules: BAL1 AMT must be substracted from or added to BAL1 until BAL1 == 0 (and BAL2 0) if BAL1 reaches 0 then the (if any) remainder of BAL1 must be substracted from BAL2 if BAL2 reaches 0 too, from then only BAL1 should be modified. So using the above data: DATENUM AMT BAL1 BAL2 0 0 20 10 /*starting record*/ 1 -5 15 10 2 -10 5 10 3 8 13 10 4 -23 0 0 5 100 100 0 6 -120 -20 0 7 140 20 0 And I need the last two BAL1 and BAL2. • MVVM - RaisePropertyChanged turning code into a mess

  New to MVVM so please excuse my ignorance. I THINK i'm using it right but I find my ViewModel has too many of these: RaisePropertyChanged("SomeProperty") Every time I set a property I have to raise that damned property changed. I miss the days where I could just go: public int SomeInteger { get; private set;} These days I have to stick the "RaisePropertyChanged" in everywhere or my UI does not reflect the changes :( Am I doing it wrong or are other people getting annoyed with the excessive number of magic strings and old school property setters? Should I be using dependency properties instead? (I doubt that would help the code bloat anyway) Despite these problems I still think MVVM is the way to go so I guess that's something.

  For a school project we're developing a game that's a little like Conway's game of life, with different organisms taking up slots in the world and then eating each other. I would like to see this take place in a 2d world. Like being able to take starcraft and have zergling and marines play roles. The problem with starcraft is that the whole algorithm would have to be written inside of the game editor, and starcraft isn't free or open source. So is there another engine that is starcraft/warcraft/AOE-ish that can be scripted from outside of the game and is freely available? (I'm asking a lot here I know)

During that time, I worked 40 hours per week during the summer and averaged 20 hours per week during the school year. I have since been hired full-time and I have been with the company a little over 3 years now. How many years of work experience do I have? Background info: There is a significant income disparity between someone with 1 year of experience vs 3 years (as per salary.com). I have job responsibilities equivalent to that of someone who has been at my company for about 5 years. I am trying to determine what I should expect in terms of income, raises, etc.

• Plain-English tutorial on artificial neural networks?

  I've Googled, StackOverflowed, everything, and I cannot seem to find a tutorial I can understand. I understand the concept of genetic algorithms, and how to implement them, (Though I haven't tried) but I cannot grasp the concept of neural networks. I know vaguely how they work... And that's about it. Could someone direct me to a tutorial that could help someone who has not even graduated middle school yet? Sure, I'm several years ahead of the majority of people my grade, but I don't understand summation, (which I apparently need if I don't want a simple binary output) vectors, and other things that I apparently should know. Is there a simple, bare-bones tutorial for neural networks? After I learn the basics, I'll proceed to more difficult ones. Preferably, they would be in Java. Thanks!

  I'm working on a C# windows program with Visual Studio 2008. Usually, I work from school, directly on my usb drive. But when I copy the folder on my hard drive at home, an sql exception is unhandled whenever I try to write to the database. it is unhandled at the conn.Open(); line. here's the exception unhandled Database 'L:\system\project\the_project\the_project\bin\Debug\PatientMonitoringDatabase.mdf' already exists. Choose a different database name. Though the present context is Disease Modelling, I'm not sure if there's such a thing as 'general' modelling and simulation... with concepts / techniques / algorithms that could be used in just about any domain (and not just limited to biology, finance, trade, economic, weather, etc.) Would you have any recommendations that are easy to read by a semi-Math-literate programmer? Basically, I cannot afford to drown myself in too much Math and theory behind M & S, hence this post. Tia...

I want to push changes from my development environment to my production host. I tried using Data | Schema Compare... and it reports to me that it does not support SQL Server 2008. • Is there any need to get a Computer Science degree?

  I've been a software developer for 20 years. i've been involved in language development and large data warehouse development. I've worked for start-ups that have gone public, and for government contractors, and I've written a published programming book. My knowledge is either self-taught or on-the-job. I've worked with some of the best and brightest, and they taught me well. I'm back in school now, and am weighing my options, deciding between a Computer Science and a business degree. My question is this. What do I gain, at this point in my career, by earning a Computer Science degree? I just don't know if a Computer Science degree, at this point, is a value-add on my resume. Edit: I'm working on completing an undergraduate degree.
