• android spectrum analysis of streaming input

  for a school project I am trying to make an android application that, once started, will perform a spectrum analysis of live audio received from the microphone or a bluetooth headset. I know I should be using FFT, and have been looking at moonblink's open source audio analyzer ( http://code.google.com/p/moonblink/wiki/Audalyzer ) but am not familiar with android development, and his code is turning out to be too difficult for me to work with. So I suppose my questions are, are there any easier java based, or open source android apps that do spectrum analysis I can reference? Or is there any helpful information that can be given, such as; steps that need be taken to get the microphone input, put it into an fft algorithm, then display a graph of frequency and pitch over time from its output? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

• Segmentation fault when using files C++

  I am using ubuntu 12.04. I have been trying a few IDE's for simple C++ school projects. However, with codelite, anjuta and kdevelop I encountered a problem: when I am trying to read / write in files I get segmentation fault: core dumped. • Bad allocation exceptions in C++

  Hello, In a school project of mine I was requested to create a program not using STL. In the program I use alot of Pointer* = new Something; if (Pointer == NULL) throw AllocationError(); My question is about allocation errors: 1. is there an autamtic exception thrown by new when allocation fails? 2. if so how can I catch it if I'm not using STL (#include "exception.h) 3. is using the NULL testing enugh? thank you. • Understanding reflection

  I recently started work at a new company and a .net web application we have is built using reflection. I have only been out of school for a year and haven't worked with this concept. After studying the code... it looks like there is a single backend interface of type object that has about 20 classes that inherit from it. lots of generic gets and sets On the surface it looks like standard inheritance to me. I guess my question is, what makes this reflection? Is it because the interface is not strongly typed? Thanks

• C++ Boost ASIO: how to read/write with a timeout?

  From reading other Stackoverflow entries and the boost::asio documentation, I've confirmed that there is no synchronous asio read/write calls that also provide an easy-to-use timeout as a parameter to the call. I'm in the middle of converting an old-school linux socket app with select(2) calls that employs timeouts, and I need to do more-or-less the same. So what is the best way to do this in boost::asio? Looking at the asio documentation, there are many confusing examples of various things to do with timers, but I'm quite confused. I'd love to see a simple-to-read example of this: Read from a socket, but wait for a maximum of X seconds after which the function either returns with nothing, or returns with whatever it was able to read from the socket before the timeout expired.

• Why is 'using namespace std;' considered a bad practice in C++?

  Okay, sorry for the simplistic question, but this has been bugging me ever since I finished high school C++ last year. I've been told by others on numerous occasions that my teacher was wrong in saying that we should have "using namespace std;" in our programs, and that std::cout and std::cin are more proper. However, they would always be vague as to why this is a bad practice. So, I'm asking now: Why is "using namespace std;" considered bad? Is it really that inefficient, or risk declaring ambiguous vars(variables that share the same name as a function in std namespace) that much? Or does this impact program performance noticeably as you get into writing larger applications? I'm sorry if this is something I should have googled to solve; I figured it would be nice to have this question on here regardless in case anyone else was wondering.

  I don't know why but the data type in this code makes a trouble when the id in the url starts with the number zero like this: http://localhost/exp/update.php?id=03A43 In this case the id is 03A43. And my query looks like this: mysql_select_db("school", $con); $result = mysql_query("SELECT * FROM student WHERE IDNO=".(int)$_GET['id']); ?> There is no problem in the design if the id does not start with the number zero. What might be the proper data type for numbers beginning in zero?

• Cure for puzzle piece programming habbits?

  Even though I went to a decent CS school, I was still taught with the mentality of programming with puzzle pieces. By puzzle pieces I mean, looking up code segments at each step of the development process and adding them together as needed. Eventually gathering all of the pieces and having a properly working program. So as an example, if in my program the next step is to tokenize a string, I go to google and search "how do I tokenize a string in language". All instead of critically thinking about its implementation. I personally don't think its a very good way to program and I always seem to forget everything that I have searched for. So how can I get out of this puzzle piece mode of programmer that I was taught.

  I am a software developer with 10+ years commercial experience, I am comfortable with nearly all of imperative languages. But I realized that most of employers prefer not candidates who is able to deliver good software but those who is trained to answer questions like "what are ten differences between pointers and references in C++" or "what this messy code fragment will print". Last time I have read a book on C++ 15 years ago in secondary school and yes, that was Bjarne Stroustrup. But today I need something quick, without long philosophical explanations about polymorphism etc but with focus to silly interview tests. So, can you recommend any short and effective books to refresh my theoretical knowledge? Thank you.

• Can I replicate some of the optimisations done by the JVM by hand?

  I'm working on a Sudoku solver at school and we're having a little performance contest. Right now, my algorithm is pretty fast on the first run (about 2.5ms), but even faster when I solve the same puzzle 10 000 times (about 0.5ms for each run). Those timing are, of course, depend of the puzzle being solved. I know the JVM do some optimization when a method is called multiple time, and this is what I suspect is happening. I don't think I can further optimize the algorithm itself (though I'll keep looking), so I was wondering if I could replicate some of the optimizations done by the JVM. Note : compiling to native code is not an option Thanks!

• gprof and execl() - is it possible?

  Background: I have a game (an old-school-esque MUD) which I've been attempting to profile with gprof. The documentation of gprof (on Linux 2.6) states that The profiled program must call "exit"(2) or return normally for the profiling information to be saved in the gmon.out file. Now, if I kill the server with the shutdown command, the application "returns normally" (i.e., main() returns) and I get a gmon.out to analyze. However, it's far more common to reboot the server. The reboot command does the following: Writes usernames and socket FD numbers to disc. Makes a call to execl(). The new process looks for the stored data, picks up the FDs, and moves on. I see the following error on the command line, as the whole process fails: Profiling timer expired ./program Question: Is it possible to get a gmon.out file from the execl()-calling process? Perhaps some environmental parameter to execl(), or else perhaps a different, gprof-friendly, system call to achieve the same effect (beginning a new process while preserving file descriptors)?

I would like to pick up C++ to possibly enter the 'game development' field, where now I'm doing web dev. I'm not a school person, but was wondering what people think about self-taught math to complement learning c++ for game dev. The last math course I took was algebra 2. • .NET Framework - When to Upgrade?

  I’m faced with a challenge of leading two (currently) separate .NET development groups with different development strategies. One group is developing on the .NET Framework 2.0 (with maybe a few applications on 3.5). The other group immediately adopts any new framework that comes out, and begins coding any new applications with it (they are running 2.0-4.0 applications). For this last group, applications written in an earlier version than the latest framework do not get upgraded. What is the current school of thought when it comes to a company developing web applications on when to adopt a new framework, and whether to migrate applications built on previous versions to the latest framework or not? Years ago the thought was to wait until the technology became mainstream - but that doesn't seem to apply much now with .NET.

• vb.net more performance for moving objects

  I have the mission to make a small game for a school project. Pictures boxes, moved by a timer for walking enemies.If there are around 5 or 6 moving picture boxes at the form, my application get troubles and lags. After I kill some enemies (remove them from the Controls Collection of the Form/Panel) It come back smooth. I think the loop of the enemy movement is too complicated but I don't know how to make that simpler. • Need help in sorting the programming buzz-words

  How do you sort out the good buzz from the bad buzz? - I really need your help here :) I see a lot of buzz-words nowadays, both here on SO and in school. For example, we had a teacher who everyone respected, who said "be careful about gold-plating and death-by-interfacing". Now, everyone and their mama cries whenever I'm creating an interface.. Another example would be here on SO where lately "premature optimization is the root of all evil", so everytime someone asks a perfomance question, he'll get that sentence thrown in his face. A few months ago I remember it was all about NHibernate in here, etc., etc... These things comes and goes, but only the good buzz stays. Now, how do you seperate the good from the bad? By reading blogs from respected persons? By trying to come to a conclusion on your own, and then try to convince others that you're right? By simply ignoring it?

• Python as your main language. Possible?

  I am currently attending college and the languages that I will 'know' by graduation are C++ and Java. That being said, i am also in the process of teaching myself Python. I know that every programming language has its own pros and cons, but would it be possible to become a python developer out of school? I always have more 'fun' programming in Python than i do in C++ or Java, and I am also in love with Pythons documentation. I know C++ will always be on top in terms of speed, but what would be the benefit of memorizing every javadoc against focusing on Python instead? are there good jobs to be had with Python? edit: also, would it be beneficial for me to look at C# as well? Microsoft is really throwing their support at it so that could be a decent career path as well.

• Javascript Animation Toogle

  I am new to JavaScript (I had some lessons in school but those were basically basics of all basics :) ) and I am seeking for help with this animation made from scratch. Here is a code that I wrote: http://jsfiddle.net/bPZeH/1/. What it basically does is that it animates height of one div. What I would like to know is, how to write the function startAnimation(), so that if I click on the div while it is being animated, it will reverse animation (for instance: instead of animating height from 150px to 400px it will stop at the current value and then animate back to 150px). I basically want to make toogle from one value to the other. It would also be okay if it were able to toogle only after the animation has finished, but I would prefer the first option.   Please forgive my title, I really don't know how to phrase it better. This isn't a school assignment or anything, but I realize it's a mostly academic question. But, what I've been struggling to do is parse 'math' text and come up with an answer. For Example - I can figure out how to parse '5 + 5' or '3 * 5' - but I fail when I try to correctly chain operations together. (5 + 5) * 3 It's mostly just bugging me that I can't figure it out. • MVC + Repository Pattern - Still depends on Data Model?

  I've started a project for school in which I am using ASP.NET MVC 2 + LINQ2SQL, and a business layer so my UI doesnt interact with the DB directly. My question is this: In my MVC project, when bringing up views and passing around data, I still have to include my Data project for access to the classes in my Linq2Sql project. Is this correct? Example: Controller: ClassesRepository cr = new ClassesRepository(); // this is from my Business project Class classToEdit = cr.GetByClassId(id); // "Class" is from my data project I still have to reference the Class class in my linq2sql data project - shouldn't my UI be completely independent of my data layer? Or maybe I'm going about this all wrong.

  Hello, I'm creating this (big?) project in high school where I'm programming the game Shithead (card game) (so that two people can play against eachother). I'll use mostly PHP, MySQL, JavaScript and Ajax. But I have never made a project like this before. I have only made like CMS-systems and so on. Do you guys have any tips on how I should structure this project? I'm also not so used to Object-oriented programming, but I guess I should consider this. Should I, for example, make a class for the cards? I'm very thankful for any tips or good links!
