  I pursued my bachelors' degree in business administration, but my interest in Information Technology led me to acquire some knowledge of PHP programming and MySQL database. I find programming so interesting that I haven't applied for any job since my graduation. Currently I am staying home and just trying to acquire in-depth knowledge of PHP programming. So far I have developed couple of websites and web applications including Inventory+ Point of Sale Software and an Accounting system for small organizations. I aim to have knowledge that a Computer Science graduate should have, and for that I want to read books but I have no idea where to start from. • How can I neatly embed Flash in a page in a way that is cross-browser compatible?

  When I receive Flash objects from my designer, it comes with an example HTML page which includes both <object> tags and <embed> tags as well as a whole heap of JavaScript. If I copy and paste this code in to my webpage, it works, but the code looks a mess (and there is so much of it!). If I remove the extra code and try either just <embed> or <object> on their own, it works in some browsers, but not others. Is there a neat, minimal method that works in all the major browsers?

• Petstore using Java EE 6 ? Almost!

  Antonio Goncalves, a Java Champion, JUG leader, and a well-known author, has started building a Petstore-like application using Java EE 6. The complete end-to-end sample application will build a eCommerce website and follows the Java EE 6 design principles of simple and easy-to-use to its core. Its using several technologies from the platform such as JPA 2.0, CDI 1.0, Bean Validation 1.0, EJB Lite 3.1, JSF 2.0, and JAX-RS 1.1. The two goals of the project are: • use Java EE 6 and just Java EE 6 : no external framework or dependency • make it simple : no complex business algorithm The application works with GlassFish and JBoss today and there are plans to add support for TomEE. • How best to merge/sort/page through tons of JSON arrays?

  Here's the scenario: Say you have millions of JSON documents stored as text files. Each JSON document is an array of "activity" objects, each of which contain a "created_datetime" attribute. What is the best way to merge/sort/filter/page through these activities via a web UI? For example, say we want to take a few thousand of the documents, merge them into a gigantic array, sort the array by the "created_datetime" attribute descending and then page through it 10 activities at a time. Also keep in mind that roughly 25% of these JSON documents are updated every day, and updates have to make it into the view within 5 minutes. My first thought is to parse all of the documents into an RDBMS table and then it would just be a simple query such as "select top 10 name, created_datetime from Activity where user_id=12345 order by created_datetime desc". Some have suggested I use NoSQL techniques such as hadoop or map/reduce instead. How exactly would this work? For more background, see: Why is NoSQL better for this scenario?

• What are some non-MS languages that can write xlsx (Excel 2007+) documents efficiently?

  Unfortunately, Excel format is required for the project I am working on. I have no problems getting the data I need in objects and arrays, and currently PHPExcel is doing handling the document generation. It works, but it's slow and loopy. Was wondering if there is a more efficient server language to generate Excel documents (not CSVs). This is a pure Linux environment so I need to stay away from .NET. I am open to any programming language that does it cleanly and efficiently. Thanks.

How does the code constantly refresh the players position and objects position to keep gravity and collision working as it should? If you don't know what a collision engine is, basically it's generally used in platformer games to make the player acutally hit walls and the like. There's the 2d type and the 3d type, but they all accomplish the same thing: collision. So, what keeps a collision engine ticking?

• Google App Engine: How to be notified when APIs change or become available?

  I am thinking about writing a GAE app but am a little hesitant because the EULA gives Google full rights to change their APIs anytime they want, for any reason. Obviously, they'd be out of business quick if they just 'upped and refactored their entire APIs, so I have to imagine they have some kind of notification system, perhaps even an RSS feed, etc. to notify developers well in advance of looming changes, or new features coming out in future releases. However, for the life of me I can't seem to find any trace of the existence of such a notification system. Perhaps the Google forums is the only place to get such updates? I guess I'm asking any battle-worn GAE veterans for re-assurance that there are reliable ways of getting notifications about policy or API changes from Google such that I could react and make the necessary app changes without production breaking or impacting any clients. • To canvas, or not to canvas, when building browser-based games?

  Background: I have extensive development background, but the last time I coded a game was many years ago. My Javascript skills are quite limited, and I intend to improve them by building a simple game — Tetris, Pac-man, or something of that complexity level. Question: It seems to me that a fundamental choice I need to make is whether I should render on a <canvas> element or not. With a canvas, I have basic tools for rendering points, lines, and more complex things on top of that. Presumably there are, or will be, also various frameworks to help with this. Without a canvas, I could keep my objects in the DOM-tree, like a regular webpage, only quite complex, with many overlapping elements. Is one approach better than the other? Are they mutually exclusive? How do I know which to pick?

  I'm developing an italian card game using the mvc pattern. I have the class GameFrame that contains the view. The user's card are buttons (JButton objects). I have 3 controllers: GameController: to control the game in general. Contains the game loop. HumanPlayerController: to control the user input ComputerPlayerController: contains the AI of the computer PlayerController: is an interface with the makeTurn() method. It's implemented by HumanP.C. and ComputerP.C. HumanPlayerController implements ActionListener too. But what is the right way to access to the GameFrame buttons? I need it for understand which card was chosen. GameFrame and HumanPlayerController are in different packages. Should i make the JButtons public?

• Tasks, jobs, activities, operations... which term to use when?

  My application has a number of different asynchronous 'things' that it performs: There are things that fire off a schedule (every 5 minutes) There are things that are fired when a user clicks a button There are things that are triggered by an incoming web service call I use the terms like this: Scheduled things = Jobs User-triggered things = Tasks Web service-triggered things = Operations Tasks are quite complicated, so they're implemented using a hierarchy of different objects which I call Activities (operations and jobs may also begin to use these Activities as their building blocks). I feel like I might be using the wrong terms - for example, would you expect something that happens every 5 minutes automatically to be a Job or a Task? Is there an industry standard for this? All of the words seem to mean the same thing.

• Seo Google Publisher Network

  I'm just about to start a new business which creates niche affiliate sites. I'm curious about the impacts to me from Google of all the urls being hosted with the same analytic tags, webmaster tool tags and server ip ranges. To benefit the most from google's serps should i have each domain within seperate analytic accounts and webmaster tools or is it ok for me to have all of my domains within one account. My issue is duplicate content and the fact that i am building a publisher network and i'm not sure how much google likes them. I'm notoriously bad at searching and as such havent found what i'm looking for yet. Any help would be very much appreciated.

  Our interview process currently consists of several coding questions, technical questions and experiences at their current and previous jobs. Coding questions are typically a single method that does something (Think of it as fizzbuzz or reverse a string kind of question) We are planning on introducing an additional step where we give them a business problem and ask them to draw a flowchart, activity, class or a sequence diagram. We feel that our current interview process does not let us evaluate the candidate's thinking at a higher level (which is relevant for architect/senior level positions). To give you some context, we are a mid size software company with around 30 developers in the team. If you have this step in your interview process, how has it improved your interviewing veracity? If not, what else has helped you evaluate the candidates better from a technical perspective.

• Reasons to use C++ ?

  I've read here and in other places that learning C++, C or other low level languages are a must to get a more low level perspective on development. I agree with this, but I find it hard to find a reason to use C++ over C# or similar languages. Most of the work I do is web based, so there's no need for C++ there. Other work is windows based, and most things work fine in C# there, so what sort of situation could I use C++? I don't do any high performance stuff, nor do I create games, mostly business applications. I'm looking for an excuse to expand on my C++ knowledge but I need some motivation other than 'because the internet said I should'.

• XNA When to call LoadContent

  I have an enum in my game that denotes the game state ie MainMenu, InGame, GameOver, Exit and I was wondering if it would be advisable to add a new one in for PrepGame - in which the game creates viewports for however many players there are, creates the battlefield etc. I feel like this is a good idea except for one thing: should I make a call back to LoadContent() in this state? I could just put a switch statement in the LoadContent for my currentGameState. If it equals PrepGame load things like the skybox, ship models, texures, HUD graphics etc. Or is it a good idea to create an Asset Manager class in the first call to LoadContent() and load everything then. I feel like both approaches have different benefits: faster, but more load times vs slower initial load time, but then all my objects are referencing the same variables so I only have to load each on once. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Peter
